Since 2010, CDC estimates that flu has resulted in between 140,000 and 710,000 hospitalizations each year. The subject is a hot button for ostomates who can lose fluids quickly. From Oct. 1- 21, 32 people tested positive for the flu in Nebraska after 1,276 tests which were performed. The CDC recommends a yearly flu vaccine for everyone 6 months of age and older as the first and most important step in protecting against this serious disease. Good health habits like covering your cough and washing your hands often can help stop the spread of germs and prevent respiratory illnesses like the flu. There also are flu antiviral drugs that can be used to treat and prevent the flu. The CDC also recommends not using the nasal flu vaccine. Only injectable shots are recommended. • Stay home when you are sick. • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing. • Washing your hands often will help protect you from germs. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand rub.

• Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.• Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces at home, work or school, especially when someone is ill. • Get plenty of sleep, be physically active, manage your stress, drink plenty of fluids, and eat nutritious food.

The Lincoln Ostomy Association collects unused ostomy supplies for the Friends of Ostomates organiza-tion as well as ostomates right here in Lincoln. Visit a LOA meeting on most first Sundays to see if any supplies will help boost your home inventory.

Lincoln Ostomy Association en-joys the support and education provid-ed by ostomy nurses like Amanda Pap-rocki, RN, BSN, CWOCN. Paprocki works at Bryan LGH Hospital East. Paprocki has worked for Bryan LGH for 10 years and specialized with ostomates for seven years. The Columbus native has two children age 2 and 4. Before concentrating on wound and ostomy nursing she served on the surgery floor. Her inspiration is her 22 year old sister, Alicia, who had an ile-ostomy surgery at age 12 and quickly moved on to be a talented cheerleader and dancer. “She was my inspira-tion,” Paprocki said. As a CWOCN nurse, Paprocki hopes to see people before surgery and begin a relationship so conversations are more comfortable after surgery. “We’re going to stick with you and

learn from you the whole way,” she said. “It’s inspiring to meet with people two years later and see how they are thriving.” At a recent LOA meeting, Paprocki tackled ways to get a good seal to eliminate leakage. “At the clinic we have just about every style of pouch to try,” she said. When troubleshooting issues, she often looks at used pouches and studies edges and rings for wear. Fit is important and other accessories, like a belt, might be an answer. Paprocki said, at Bryan LGH East, approximately 12 ostomy surgeries are performed each month. Seven-teen were performed in August alone. She described crusting techniques, using products like Cavilon, can help when skin surround a stoma becomes red and wet.

Hollister representative Jason Hackel visited the Lincoln Ostomy Association in October to discuss the science behind some ostomy products. Maintaining healthy skin sur-rounding a stoma, has always been a goal and subject for ostomates, he said. Ceramides are naturally-occurring fat molecule found in the outermost layer of skin, he said. Essential to the healthy functioning of the skin’s bar-rier layer, ceramides play a key role in helping skin retain moisture. Ceramide levels in the skin decline as we age, starting in the early 30s. Together, with cholesterol and free fatty acids (the two other types of fats found naturally in your skin), cera-mides help hold skin cells together. Hackel said one type of barrier, CeraPlus, addresses the need for cer-

is available as a premier one-and two-piece pouches. Ceramide protect skin’s natural moisture barrier; maintains good peristomal skin health; and decrease transepidermal water loss from dam-aged or eroded skin, he said.

Ann Lif RN, CWOCN, from Bryan Health Medical Center and Specialty Clinic, shares tips and tech-niques she’s learned from inventive ostomates she’s met over the years: Lif works Bryan Health East Specialty Clinic and Medical Center which sees patients, with complex pre- and post-operative ostomy and wound needs. Lif said she saw an ostomate who used T-shirt material to design a pouch cover, for example. The cotton material was washable and reusable, she said. He left the T-shirt with long strings to tie around the pouch open-ing and the end was open just enough to accommodate the spout of the pouch. She said his handiwork helped manage perspiration, pouch weight, and comfort. Lif, a 30-year RN, has devoted 20 years to medical-surgical nursing, progressive trauma and home health care. She was inspired by Betty Kohout LPN, ET; Sue Dolsky RN, ET; Kathy Hoffman RN, CWOCN; and her mentor Joan Junkin RN, CWOCN. The medical-surgical area she worked on saw many vascular patients with wounds, as well as complex patients with ostomies,-Lif said. Lif said she developed a passion for the challenges and com-passion patients need while recovering from ostomy surgery. “I enjoy special bonds that develop from patients,” she said.

LOA partner videoShield Health Care has been a great support to the Lincoln Ostomy Association in 2017 sponsoring the Sparrow twice and bringing extra education to members through articles and videos featuring Lau-ra Cox. One video covers a wide array of topics that would be handy for new and veteran ostomates. Available at shield-healthcare.com/community/ostomylife, the video is also available on ostomy-nebraska.com/lincoln. Fourteen points that Laura addresses are: leaks; noise; dressing; body image; going out in public; sports, leisure and other activities; friends; dating and sex; sleeping; odor; hydration; and travel.

Q: Whats the difference between a politician and a snail? A: One is slimy, a pest, and leaves a trail everywhere and the other is a snail.

There was a papa mole, a momma mole, and a baby mole. They lived in a hole out in the country near a farmhouse. Papa mole poked his head out of the hole and said, “Mmmm, I smell sausage!” Mom-ma mole poked her head outside the hole and said, “Mmmm, I smell pancakes!” Baby mole tried to stick his head outside but couldn’t because of the two bigger moles. Baby mole said, “The only thing I smell is molasses.”

Q: What do cats eat for breakfast? A: Mice Krispies.

Are you acting like a child? Good. Children laugh about 400 times a day, while adults laugh on average only 15 times a day.

Kohll’s rep touts face-to-face service Lincolnites grew up with Wagey Drug and Kohll’s Pharmacy & Homecare filling their prescriptions quickly and with a smile. Kohll’s Pharmacy customer service representative Sarah McKinney work-ing from the iconic store at 27th and Vine Street, says her experience helps customers find just the right product. McKinney has worked with ostomates for about three years. The nice thing about Kohll’s, she said, is that products are inventoried in their store and they have multiple locations to expand that inventory. “Here, it’s about people,” she said. “We personally answer phones and al-ways ask how things are working.” Kohll’s provide courtesy calls and postcard reminders if people want it. Their delivery cars travel all over bringing products to people’s door up to two hours away.
