Food for Thought: Jesus and the Woman from Samaria...a.k.a. “Woman at the Well”: Usually having no names trivializes women in the Gospels. In John 4, a nameless woman speaks—makes a journey from misunderstanding to faith and brings her entire village to Jesus. The gospel calls her “the Samaritan Women,” identifying her with her people. She meets Jesus at a well named for their common ancestor Jacob. Jesus starts talking to her, first asking her for a drink – then moves on to “living water” - and to the well of Spirit within. When she asks about “living water,” Jesus tells her, “Go call your husband,” - to which she replies, “I have no husband.” Jesus then tells her, “You are right in saying 'I have no husband' for you have had 5 husbands and the one you have now is not your husband.” (John 4.17-18) Jesus is not literally speaking about husbands; he is referring to the 5 gods of the foreign tribes that Assyrians resettled to Samaria after conquering Is-rael's northern Kingdom in 721 B.C.E. The woman is aware of her people's history and how intermarrying with these tribes and worshiping their gods made Samaritans heretics to Jews in the southern Kingdom. She responds to Jesus, “Sir, I see that you are a prophet.” recognizing that Jesus is referring to Samaria's heretic history. She also recalls their earlier common history when all 12 tribes worshiped together on the nearby mountain in Samaria, not in Jerusalem. The boundaries between Jew and Samaritan dissolve as Jesus speaks about worshiping in spir-it and truth. When the woman realizes that Jesus is the messiah, she leaves her water jug at the well and goes to tell the “good news” to the people of her village. Because of the strength of the woman's word and witness, the people come themselves to hear Jesus speak. (Note that a well is a symbol of wisdom; the story begins with a question and the conversation is a journey to Jesus.) Reflection: How has a question opened a journey of faith for you? When has a misunderstanding led to conversation and faith? What faith questions do you have? With whom might you start a faith conversation? What word and witness do you give your children and fam-ily that invite them to encounter Jesus for themselves? What word do people hear and what witness do they see in you that might lead them to Jesus?

Solemn Communion will be held at OLPH on Sunday, April 30th at the 10:30am Mass as well as the Noon Hispanic Mass on Sunday, May 21. If you are wanting to purchase a gift for one of those children, there is a Catholic gift store in Eugene across from St Mary's parking lot: The Mustard Seed Catholic Gift Store, 227 West 10th (between Lincoln and Charnelton) ~ 541-683-0733. They have many different items, but not large quantities and will be ordering communion items soon. So to be sure that they have ample quantities for you, or if you need a special order, they will need you to give them 30 days to order and receive items before April 30th and May 21st.

What Are You Eating Friday? ... CRS Rice Bowl 2017 Eve-ry Friday in Lent, We're invited to fast from (not eat) meat. But Fasting from meat isn't an opportunity for a five-course seafood dinner; the purpose of the fast is to remind us of our dependence on God, and our need for God's grace in our lives. It challenges us to live lives of simplicity - lives that are ready to go to the peripheries, seeking community and eager to serve. A variety of simple, meatless meals from some of the countries Catholic Relief Services serves around the world can be found on their website. These meals become not just an op-portunity to fast, but an invitation to engage in global solidari-ty, to bring us into greater connection with our brothers and sisters no matter where they live. These meatless meals are all the more important in light of Pope Francis' call to care for creation, our common home. In so many ways, the production and sale of meat damages our environment. From the amount of energy, water, land and grain used to raise livestock to the fuel burned in moving meat from one country to the next, the food industry is wrought with inefficiencies that harm the planet and prioritize the bottom line over the poor and vulnera-ble - and the earth. So as you prepare your simple meals this Lent, remember that they're not just an act of individual fast-ing, they're an act of global justice... Elizabeth Martin, Direc-tor US Programing for Catholic Relief Services

Make a Little Change—Make a Big Difference: If you missed the fair trade coffee samples last weekend at coffee and do-nuts, stop by this Sunday after Mass for another chance to taste good coffee that does good things at a good price! Throughout Lent, the coffee is free—taste and compare: if you’re like most folks, you’ll want to buy some for your own use. Prices are comparable to high grade coffees like Star-bucks and Seattle’s Best. Sign up after Mass on Sunday, or if you attend Saturday Mass, contact Lise Colgan at [email protected]. Decaf and regular, whole bean and ground—even single K-cups and 5 lb. bags—are available. Teas, too!

Baptisms at OLPH and St Philip Benizi... The next scheduled baptisms are for the third weekend in May (May 20/21) - at the OLPH Saturday 5:30 pm, St Philip Benizi Sunday 8:30am or OLPH Sunday 10:30am Masses.(The Spanish noon Mass will be celebrating Solemn First Communion so there will not be baptisms at it.) Classes are required for parents and godpar-ents. You need to make arrangements before May 1, so there is time to schedule and do the classes. Contact Betty for clas-ses in English. These are held at OLPH. Classes in Spanish are held at St Philip Benizi on the third and fourth Sunday of the month (so those would need to be scheduled now as the 3rd Sunday in April is Easter.) Contact Israel Montes (541-914-7994) or Ausencia Alexander (541-895-4084) to schedule.

Next week, our parish will take up The Catholic Relief Ser-vices Collection (CRSC). Funds from this collection help pro-vide food to the hungry, support to displaced refugees, and Christ’s love and respect to all people here at home and abroad. Next week, please give generously to the CRSC and help Jesus in disguise. Learn more about the collection at www.usccb.org/catholic-relief.

La próxima semana, nuestra parroquia llevará a cabo The Catholic Relief Services Collection (CRSC).
