We simply can't eat and drink enough in one day to last us for a lifeme. If we want to go on living in a reasonably healthy manner, we have to eat and drink something every day. Now, this rather obvious informaon is simply a lead in to what may be one of the greatest challenges we have: to trust God, to count on him, to depend on him, on a day to day and hour to hour and minute to minute and second to second basis. We are glad to trust him with eternity, but we are not so sure about this aſternoon. We know that he will support us and guide us through all of our tomorrows, but we are not so confident about today. We don't want to be put in the insecure posion of having to trust God to provide for our needs on a day-to-day basis. We are like the rich fool in the story that Jesus told in Luke 12:13-21. We'd like to store up enough today to last us for the next several years. Then, if God should forget about us for a while or, what is far more likely, if we should forget about him for a while, we would sll be in prey good shape. In teaching us the Lords Prayer, Jesus said: Give us each day our daily bread.(Luke 11:3) Or, as we pray it each Sunday morning: Our Father, who art in heaven ... They got so hungry that they wished they were back in their old Egypan capvity: at least Pharaoh had given them enough to eat. They called on Moses and he called on God and God produced a nectar from the shrubs and trees. It was called Manna and it was easily transformed into a substance that tasted like sweet bread. But there was a funny thing about this manna; it was good for only one day at a me. If you tried to collect enough for two days, It became foul and infested with worms. It was a test of faith. God gave them only enough bread to last them one day at a me. They had to trust him to take care of tomorrow when it came. But when they trusted him, God never let them down. One day last month, I had breakfast at IHOP. I had a mushroom/spinach omelet, with two pancakes and a side of scrapple! It was delicious! But a few hours later I ate a small, but adequate lunch. for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect…” (1 Peter 3:15)

Brothers and Sisters in Christ!

This month, Living Savior will be hosting a day-long work-shop on outreach to our Muslim neighbors on February 16. I’m rather looking forward to it because in my time working on campus at George Mason, I’ve come to find that the num-ber of Muslims living in our area has greatly increased in the last couple of years. About a quarter of the female students I’ve seen on campus in the Johnson Center are wearing hijabs and burqas, and there’s a now a large prayer room on the third floor where Muslim students can pray toward Mecca. 2010 census data demonstrate that between 2000 and 2010, the number of adherents of Islam living in Fairfax County grew by 45%, with the 2010 population of Muslims in the county being roughly 50,100. No doubt that that number is much higher now, but what this all ultimately means is that there’s a greater chance now that our neighbors may be Muslims than there was before, and with that chance come opportunities to have conversations with them about our Christian faith.

One thing you may not know is that Islam, while holding up the Qur’an as the final and ultimate revelation of God’s will for man, also holds up the Bible as one of their scriptures. Specifically, Islam considers the New Testament (which they call the Injeel in Arabic) to be one of their holy texts. The problem is that they consider the Injeel to have somehow become corrupted, and many Muslims have been discouraged from reading the New Testament even though their faith con-siders it scripture. What they often know about the Gospel comes either through hearsay or the filter of the Qur’an. Did you know the Qur’an mentions Jesus more than ninety times? Some of the things the Qur’an says about Jesus agree with statements about Him that are found in the Injeel, but other statements in the Qur’an contradict them: for example, the Qur’an agrees with Christian claims when it calls Jesus the Messiah (Surah 3:40, 45) and says He was born of the Virgin Mary (Surah 19:19-21), but it disagrees when it says that He is not the Son of God (Surah 19:34-35) and that He was not crucified (Surah 4:157). In many cases, some Muslims do not even know what the Qur’an itself says because they cannot read Arabic, and translations of the Qur’an are thought to be untrustworthy.

The fact that our Muslim neighbors have an idea about who Jesus is (albeit an incorrect one) puts us in a great position to talk to them about our faith in Christ. As our workshop lead-er, Yvette Moy, says, we Christians are the “Christ experts.” We know that because of Jesus’ life, ministry, death, and resurrection, we can trust what our Scriptures tell us about Him, and we can share our faith with them. By sharing the Jesus that we know, the Christ of the Gospels, of the Injeel that so many Muslims should hear, we can help them know the One who saves us from our sins and gives us everlasting life, the One who is the reason for the hope that is in us. So please, join us on February 16th to learn about your Muslim

neighbors and how to engage them with respect and love. Your witness may introduce Christ to them, and lead them to realize that He can be the reason for their hope, too.

In Christ, Vicar Nils Niemeier

Bridges International Dinner and Bible Study The Bridges International dinners and Bible studies will continue once classes resume in February. More details regarding meal sign-up will follow.

Adult Sunday School Series

Back to the Basics 9:50am in Klein Hall

Our Adult Sunday School Series, "Back to the Basics” will be doing a deeper dive and compare views from other denominations regarding some of those foundational, basic Christian teachings. Our next few interactive discussions will focus on the Sacrament of Baptism. Do all denominations believe that Baptism is a sacrament? Is Baptism a work of obedience that we do? How is it that babies can be baptized while unable to demonstrate true faith? We will explore these and many other questions. We welcome anyone to come study with us! No worries if you miss a lesson. You can always jump in! Facilitated by Jason Tolbert.

WORSHIP AND MUSIC MINISTRY “WALKING IN THE LIGHT . . . WALKING AS A CHILD” One of my favorite hymns is “I Want to Walk as a Child of the Light” (LSB # 411). It is a relatively “new” hymn with both the text and the tune written by Kathleen Thomerson (b. 1934) in 1966. I did not become acquainted with it until we came to Virginia in 1989. While the hymn is included in the “Epiphany section” of Lutheran Service Book, it is a work that is appropriate at anytime during the Church Year. The flowing and melodious tune could stand by itself. It truly is a beautiful melody. However, when the text is wedded with the tune, a powerful “musical sermon” is created for each of us to meditate upon and celebrate. As this hymn is sung during worship, I am reminded of several Biblical texts. In Matthew 18:3, Jesus says, “ . . . unless you are converted and become like children . . .” There is something about a child-like faith that removes any doubts we might possess. I John 1:7 tells us, “if we walk in the Light . . .the blood of Jesus, His Son, cleanses us from all sin.” Light, especially the Light of Jesus has a way of giving each of us direction for focusing on things of an eternal nature. This hymn not only speaks of us walking in the Light, it gives us the opportunity to sing of our willingness “to see the brightness of God,” “to follow Jesus,” “to look at Jesus,” “and to be with Jesus.” The reason that we should desire all of those things is summarized in the refrain, “In Him (Jesus) there is no darkness at all.” Jesus gives us a light that never goes out. His light is never eclipsed in our souls. Sure, each of us have times when our natures try to keep us in the darkness. But the Light of Jesus is ALWAYS there to bring us back into His presence. The Light of Jesus NEVER fails. It al-ways outshines the darkness each of us possess. It’s Jesus nature and desire to shine in us and through us each day of our lives. As we sing this wonderful hymn, not only in Epiphany, but throughout the year, let us always have the prayer, “Shine in my heart, Lord Jesus,” on our lips and in our hearts. God bless you as you Walk as a Child in the Light of Jesus. Dr. Wallace Horton Interim Minister of Worship/Organist [email protected]

Seder It was at the Passover meal, the last supper, that Jesus said to his disciples “With fervent desire I have desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer.” Luke 22:2 Have you ever wondered what it might have been like in the Upper Room when our Lord and Savior, Christ Jesus, instituted Holy Communion? February This month at Living Savior Preschool we will learn about Valentine’s Day. As part of that lesson we will talk about the special people in our lives and will make valentines for some of those people. We will discuss

how the postal service helps deliver some of those cards. Our Turtle class just toured the Fair Lakes UPS store to see another form of postal service. At the UPS store they received a tour of the facility and witnessed the process for mailing a package. This field trip enhances our February curriculum about community workers. Ground Hog Day will aid in our lessons about the weather and spring. We will talk about the groundhog and whether or not he can really predict the end of winter. To celebrate Chinese New Year, the Year of the Pig, the children will make noisemakers and parade through the halls of LSP. We will cover President’s Day, talking about some of the important contributions made by Presidents Washington and Lincoln.

Towards the end of the month Dr. Bunin, a pediatric dentist from Dr. Kramer’s office, will visit to demon-strate how to take care of your teeth and keep a healthy smile. Last but not least, we will end February and begin March celebrating the birthday of Dr. Seuss. The children will wear pajamas to school, bring a favor-ite book from home and have pancakes for a special snack. This is a favorite day for all!

Registration for 2019-2020

Registration for the next school year will begin February 6th for members of Living Savior and currently enrolled families and February 7

th for the general public. LSP offers a warm, Christian learning environ-

ment for young children. We are licensed by the state of Virginia and are accredited by the National Asso-ciation for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). We believe that LSP offers young children one of the best opportunities to achieve the goals of a Christian education outside of the home as they grow and develop physically, socially, emotionally and intellectually. LSP enrolls children from 2 ½ through 5 years of age. We offer two, three, four and five day classes with after school care four days a week. If you or your friends and neighbors have preschool-aged children, please call the office at (703) 352-4208 or stop by for a brochure or tour of the preschool. Thank you! Come join us at Living Savior Preschool!
