Living Faith

Dear friends in Christ,

In this very difficult time, my love and thoughts are with you all. It is

hard to see the things that often give us security and hope and the

capacity to be with each other being taken from us for the greater

good. Life as we knew it has changed for a time. Michael and I

can’t see one another now, as his nursing home, Hawthorn Village,

is now closed to visitors. But we have now made an appointment to

talk with each other on the phone once a day at 9:00am. It is

working well for us. It is a good way to connect.

May our loving God hold you and keep you, each one, in His love –

today, tomorrow and forever.

Adelene

Going Purple for Epilepsy in the Month of March ...

Teresa Gray my Journey ...

While still in my mother’s womb, I suffered a stroke in the right frontal lobe of my brain and was born in 1971 with Cerebral Palsy. As the stroke was on the right side of my brain, the left side of my body was affected, so I needed to have a number of operations to help me walk better, and I am still not able to use my left hand completely. But when I was 10 years old, I started to experience funny circles that affected my vision. After having both EEG & MRI tests, I was told that I had epilepsy and that what I was experiencing was Petit Mal Seizures. These seizures have since continued throughout my whole life. During them, I make a noise

and have a blank stare for a short time. But in the past, it was at least 10 to 15 minutes before I was completely back to myself. Some days are a struggle. I have been on lots of medications over the years, which have made me tired, although I always keep positive and enjoy life each day. Over the past five years, I have had a number of tests to try to find the exact source of my seizures. In 2019 I was able to have a High-Density EEG in Melbourne, which showed the doctors exactly which part of my brain was causing me to have seizures - my right Temporal Lobe.

In June 2019, I underwent surgery in Melbourne to have a Right Temporal Lobotomy and the removal of the Hippocampus to stop my seizures. The Surgeon said I wouldn’t have any more seizures after the surgery, but I did have two small seizures two months after the operation. I am still experiencing some seizures; however, they are much milder since the surgery. I am still on medication but have been able to reduce the amount. Since the operation, I feel better in myself, more confident in myself. I have had support from my family all throughout my life. My husband Jeff has been by my side the whole time, especially during this last year, for which I am grateful.

I keep going in life, enjoy myself with the things I do each day. I hope my journey helps people who have epilepsy to keep doing what they like, to keep positive through their life and know they will have support with family, friends, and from Epilepsy Tasmania.
