Formal Dinner 2015

Well here I sit looking out at the cold, wet, bleak weather and

thanking whoever organized our formal cookout dinner for

last weekend (the last of the good weather). I think it was

John Kent who picked this date.

We arrived on THURSDAY afternoon and set up camp. John

Moore arrived with a truck load of wood which was

deposited near the fire site. He had afternoon tea with us

then left Jeff and I to settle down beside a small fire, cook

our dinner and have a pleasant night sitting beside the fire

with Cocoa.

FRIDAY dawned a lovely sunny day, Clancy arrived in usual

manner with another load of wood. After lunch the Moore’s,

Dukes, John Kent arrived then later Aaron with a load of

palettes. All set up then enjoyed afternoon tea of scones, jam

and cream around the fire which had been built up. After

dinner we all sat around the fire – yes we could sit close to

the fire – and chatted while enjoying the near full moon and

fine weather.

SATURDAY we were up early to the cries of the cockies and

kookaburras. It was decided the night before to get a large fire going early to make coals for the baking of

dinner. From lunch time on everyone started arriving setting up their camps and inspecting Leah’s new

camper. Really Leah a heater and air conditioner!!! Then the trench was dug for the twenty camp ovens,

and the camp dining room was set up. Paul with lots of apprentices set up the lights for the night. About

3.30 the trench was ready for the meat to go on, and all hands were on deck to cut up the vegetables.

Then several expert chefs commenced their task of cooking dinner.

The call for dinner was at 6.30. Everyone dressed in their formal and not so formal wear, all looking very

glamorous. All dinners served and everyone sat down to a

delicious dinner. After mains dessert was served and all

lived up to expectations.

After dinner the best dressed lady and gentleman were

chosen by our judges. Congratulations to Rita Cameron,

who looked like she had been to the Gold Cup and a very

dapper Mitchell Armstrong in his “bag of fruit” suit. Thank

you to all who dressed up and made this night as glamorous

as it was.

By now the fire was burning brightly – who said PeterV.W.

was not there? Pete you would have been proud of all the P.V.W’s putting wood on the fire in your name.

So you’re to blame, YES!!!!

Page 6: Living the Adventure!€¦ · Wagga Wagga 4WD Club Newsletter Page 1 . It encapsulates what we do as a Club. The enthusiastic members of the Wagga Wagga Four Wheel Drive Club . delight

Wagga Wagga 4WD Club Newsletter Page 6

After dinner, drinks and washing up everyone sat around and enjoyed chatting and having a drink or 2,

some at the fire and some stayed at the tables.

The conversation around the fire got a bit wild with several ladies referring to subjects not to be

mentioned in a club report, conversation included numbers 1, 2, or 3????? See Brenda or Donna for

information regarding this conversation. From about 10.30pm, everyone reluctantly left the fire and

retired for the night.

SATURDAY Once again wakened by the cockies and kookaburras – thanks to Clancy for leaving the camp

quietly- . Early persons built up the fire and started cooking breakfast – eggs, bacon, tomato, onion and

toast. Those not woken by the birds emerged from their camps to the smell of breakfast cooking.

After breakfast and cleaning up it was time for morning tea, yes

more food, and sitting or standing around talking. What were the 3

people doing under Leah’s camper???

Noted over the 2 days were our 2 main organizers with heads

together writing and adding etc, etc. Thanks to Brenda Moore and

John Kent for the organization of the food etc for the dinner. Thank

you to the wood carters and general workers all who assisted in

many small and big ways to make our Formal Dinner as successful as it was. Many hand sure do make

light work. It was an excellent, relaxed and most pleasant weekend enjoyed by approx. 40 members.

Another great Wagga Wagga 4WD Club activity!!!!!

Helen B. (Not sure why I got this job, Jeff and I were the 1st there and last to leave)

Trip Report Mount Granya (Day One)

Since only Carolyn and I were going with Jeff and Helen it was decided to meet at 8.30 instead of the usual 8.00. After meeting up near Lloyd, Jeff did the risk assessment and paperwork as required, we then headed along Holbrook Rd to Gelston Park were Coco (the Brills dog) was spending the weekend at the boarding kennels. Continued to Holbrook for morning tea at the bakery. (Jeff had left the thermos at

home so had to go to the bakery). After morning tea Jeff went and bought a new thermos (Helen said they needed a new one anyhow). Continued along the Hume Highway towards Albury, turning off towards the Wyman ferry. After crossing the Hume dam on the ferry (Jeff commented that it was his shortest crossing of the dam, as it was only 28% full) we turned right and continued toward Albury before turning up George Creek Rd, the start of the dirt. Continued along this track till Magazine track where we went in to look at the Powder Magazine, a concrete structure

where they used to store explosives for the construction of roads in nearby forests. Backtracked to George Creek road and turned left. Next turned right onto Plateau Rd. Continued along the track for a while before stopping at Plateau campground for a bit of a look. Nice spot but not setup for car based camping. Continued along Plateau Rd and then onto Javis Creek Rd and into Old Tallangatta. Quick drive through town and then onto Georges Creek Rd and onto Mulholland Rd ,Bridal Track and up to Mt Granya summit for a late lunch. Had a chat to the bloke in the fire tower before sitting down for lunch. After lunch we walked to the lookout. After about 30 seconds we were at the lookout with great views of the valley below.

Wagga Wagga 4WD Club Newsletter Page 13

Back in the cars and back down Mt Granya Rd to the Bridle Track were we turned left down the mountain. Into low range as it was a long and steep descent. At the bottom we found our camp spot for the night at Cotton Tree Creek campground with a table and fire pit. Had camp setup and sitting down for afternoon tea around 3.00. After afternoon tea I went with Jeff and collected fire wood for the night ,then we all went for a walk to the old Granya Scout

Hut (which has been restored) and then continued up the hill to the waterfalls. A little bit of water still falling but nice anyway. Back to camp and had happy hour. After preparing our meals Helen laid out the Tablecloth and set the table. Nice meal in a nice setting. Did the cleaning up, lit the fire and sat around it till about 10.30 talking and enjoying the peaceful night (except for shooters at the farm next door).

Mt Granya (Day 2)

Woke up to the alarm at 7.00 (White Cockatoos and kookaburras) but did not struggle out of bed till around 8.00. Jeff and Helen already up and having breakfast. After a nice and relaxed breakfast, we were packed up and ready by 10.00. I went to start the car but had a flat battery, so Jeff got me started and off we went. Drove into Granya, turning right onto the black top. Continued up the mountain then turned onto Firebrace track. Continued along Firebrace Tk, through a gate into Lawson State Park where we stopped at Conic Rocks camping ground for morning tea. A small walk takes you to Conic Rocks, an outcrop of granite boulders. (Due to time restraints we did not do the walk this time, will do next time we are in area)

Wagga Wagga 4WD Club Newsletter Page 14

After a cuppa, continued along Firebrace Tk, past the turnoff to the timber trestle bridge (Did not go in as we have been there a couple of time already), onto the Murray Valley Highway. Turned left towards Shelly, then right onto Avondale Rd and then left onto Beetomba Rd towards Avondale Gardens, which was the site of a homestead where they planted a lot of different plants and trees around the homestead. The forestry commission has taken control of the area and

have put up information plaques describing the different trees along with a picnic area and camping area. We were surprised at the amount of people that were there. After a good look around we backtracked along Avondale Rd then turned left onto Station Tk, where we found the old Shelly Railway Station. When operational this station was the highest in Victoria at 780 metres. The station platform has been restored along with some information boards about the area. The Station here was opened in 1916, and closed in 1979. It was a hive of activity for many years, but all that remains today is the platform and the railway cuttings, where trains where shunted up and down the yards seven days a week.

Drove back to Firebrace Tk and then onto Mt Lawson Road toward Mt Lawson Summit where we stopped at the camp ground for lunch. A short walk (1km) to the summit, but again, due to lack of time will have to come back and do it. After lunch headed back down, taking the Boulder Tk turnoff. Unfortunately, about 5 minutes down the track a tree had come down with no way around it, so had to do a U-turn and return to Mt Lawson Road and back to the Murray Valley Highway. Back at the highway we headed towards Corryong before turning onto Shelly-Walwa Rd. Drove through Walwa, turned right through Jingellic and onto Holbrook were we stopped at the submarine café for a cuppa. Left Holbrook around 5.00 and headed for home. Due to our late arrival into Wagga, Coco had to spend another night at the boarding kennel. Carolyn and I had a wonderful weekend going to places we had not been to before. Great weather, good scenery and good company. We would like to thank Jeff and Helen for organising the weekend. We will defiantly go back and explore more of the region.
