Living togetherWhy is it interesting and what are the effects ?Cooperative games give confidence, solidarity, dynamism and respect to everyone. It prevents competition in the way of playing and so in the way of living. It’s important to have some collective rules that permits more freedom in the group’s life. For communication, one interesting technique can be “Non Violent

Communication”.

These tools are interesting to be used in any group life.

Exemples of various games :

- The electric rope,- The cooperative dictionary,- Non Violent Communication

Technical informations :

The electric rope

Aim : Elaborate an efficient strategy to solve a problem by cooperation.

Materials : Two trees or poles and a string or a rope.

Instructions : The rope symbolises a wall so you can’t passunder the wall. The wall can be from 1,4 to 1,8m high. The rope can be between two trees or poles. Both the poles, the trees and the rope are electrified. So you can’t touch them. Participants have to pass without jumping higher than 0,50m. At the beggining all participants are on the same side of the rope. At the end everybody has to be on the other side. If one participant touches the rope, he or she is electrified, and he or she has to try again. When a participant touches the string or trees with the poles, he or she is electrified. To make this game, everybody has to participate.

Effects : It creates cooperation and group dynamics.

The cooperative dictionary

Aim : To create a common cultural knowledge of a group. It brings fun and cohesion. It brings a mark of the unity of a group. It brings consciousness of what joins the members of the group. It brings the unconsciousness of the group. It gives the symbolic identity to the group.

Materials : Papers and pens

Instructions : Make groups of 3 or 4. Each team has to create words related to the group life (people, situations, places, topics, etc.) You can join names, you can create new words, the topics can be about activities, sense of perception, participants can create symbols, signs, and corporal language. What is not forbiden is allowed. You have to give place to creativity.

Non Violent Communication

Aim : Have a respectfull communication in the group

Instructions : For a group conversation, it is important to give his place to everyone. So we have different codes to significate our agreement, desagreement, etc. In a group conversation, it is important not to make a double talk, to speek loudly, and not too long. Rise your hand if you want to speek, and the codes can help us to understaind each other well.

Effects : Have a respectfull and efficient group conversation.

Examples of the Non Violent Communication created by Marshall

B. Rosenberg“I agree”

“I disagree”

“be quiet someone wants to speak”

“you repeat yourself ”

“I would like to talk”

“I’m opposed to”

“I have a suggestion”

String game(world diet)

Why is it interesting and what are the effects of this game ?It gives the participants the awareness of the system of the world’s diet. It should make people think about it and act and change their habits.

How to prepare it ?Choose the most interesting roles and topics, then adapt it for the number of participants[you can find roles on internet, on our website: http://www.solafrika.com/echangeseur.html#LS-GD]

Precautions: think about security with a string, place and make sure that everyone pays attention

Explain the rules of the string game:Everyone should get a role (which is divided into three circles) and talk to (theatrically and interactively) the others. The game starts from the first circle (dishes) to second (organizer of the diet system) to the last ones (victims).

After playing the role, everybody thinks about links and connects them with a string to another role-player.

First step : make the dishes circle talk and connect them by explaining

Second step : move to the second circle, let the organizers of the world diet system talk and connect them with each other and the first circle by explaining the links

Third step : make talk victims of a system talk and connect them with every circle by explaining the links, see their point of view and bad consequences on their lifes

A l t e r n a t i v e s discussed :- gardening- eating local products- eating organic products- preserve old seeds and oldtechnical gardening- for citizens, try to get freshproducts from farmers- cook at home- eat less industrial meat

Fourth step : ask people who think that they don’t have the power to change anything to sit, ask people who think they have the power to pull the string to feel the pressure of the system

Fifth step : Make everyone talk about the alternative systems and ways to make it fairer. Give space to debate and discussion on the topic.

The Solar DryerWhy is it interesting? It is interesting because we don’t need electricity to dry fruits and vegetables. The process of drying preserves the vitamins and fibre. It permits people to eat their dried products all year long.

How to use it?The solar dryer has to be always oriented to the sun. Every day we should check the food in the dryer. The food has to be cut to appropriate size and always has to be the same weight. You can also elevate the dryer with cinder blocks.Take the dryer inside or protect it when not in use or during the winter so it lasts longer.

How to use it?

What do we need ?

MATERIALS- Rafter (8cmx8cm) 6 metres one of 3m20 one of 2m80- Boards (10cmx3cm)=12metres- Cleats (4.5x3cm)=30metres- Sheets of plywood (thikness of 10 mm 2mx1m)=4 sheets- Black iron sheets (thikness of 6/10mm or 0 .6mm.2mx1m=2 sheets- 1 window (thikness of bor 8mm)90cm x120 cm- Extonor paint : black 1L+colors for decoration (0 .5 L)- Metallic brackets (20small 20 larges)- 2 Hinges for the door- 3 closure systems- Assortment of wood screws and mails- Bolts and screw nuts for eight key- Aluminiun tape- Silicone- Mosquito net- Food high tempature paint- Sullorts (blocks ,bricks or stones )

EQUIPMENTS- Access to electricity- A jisgow (or a few)- A screw gun (or q few)- A silicone gun- Brushes- Hammers- Key (eight size)- Pencil or chalk- Something to know it the level is right

How to build it ?

Step 1 :Build the base like the plan shows it.

Step 2 : Attach the boards on the basic structure that will form

the vertical of the dryer.Secure with brackets inside the dryer and with large screws

from the outside.

Step 3 :Secure both ends of boards (40 cm) vertically on the front of the base structure (large screws from the outside and inside brackets).Control

the level.

Step 4 : Attach two cleats (88 cm) between the boards that will support plate and the window. Positioning along the dryer cleats (see map) and cut through the ends of which will be on the front of the dryer. Attach the brackets on the uprights by screwing from the outside, and place the plywood on these cleats.

Step 5: Place the sheet as indicated on the plan ... and then paint it in

black.Attach the cleats (67 cm) which

will serve to lay the screen.Put a plywood board on the sides of the dryer. Take measures to draw a rectangle and the

position of the cleats.Cut the plywood.

Close the sides of the dryers by screwing plywood to the cleats.Place the glass to take the

following action ...

Put the rectangle of plywood on one side of the dryer ... draw a line ... remove ... Cut the size. Before fixing, thinking remove the glass to prevent breakage.Place the sheet on top of the dryer. Leave the plate than above the door to a shelter for the rain.Positioning the sheet so that it extends equally on both sides of the dryer.Fold ... and screw the plate with a hammer sticking out the sides (the cut with shears to avoid the corners). Replace the window, thinking of the silicone on the wood «cleats support»

The dryer has four mosquito nets on which the food will be placed.Photo of a screen (wooden frame and screen). Attach the cleats with large screws and metal brackets if needed. Attach the mosquito net with staples or screw with a thin peace of woodon top.

Cut out the back door measure.By performing an opening closed by a mosquito net, it will allow air to escape. To consolidate the door, you can set the tin plate on the diagonals of the door. It is also possible to add a frame bracket to

prevent the door becomes fragile.Fixing the hinges and bottom at the door. Make sure the door is properly sealed to

avoid losing heatinside the dryer.

In countries where it is possible to find aluminium tape, the angle is especially tight. Then use a piece of tape for fixing «sheet - glass.» Seal with silicone, if there are spaces between the pieces of plywood. The aim is that the dryer is as tight as possible to maintain maximumheat.

Paint everything in black and thensome decorative !

Then up to you and Good luck … !

Place the aluminum tape on the edges of the glass and finish to seal the face «before», leaving a sufficient air intake. . .

The woodoven

Why is it interesting ?You can make your own bread and pizzas by yourself, you can choose the ingredients you will put inside, you can invite your friends to share your handmade food! Everybody can do it in their own garden.

How can we use it ?After the construction, you have to wait 3 months to let it dry. Then you take the sand out of the oven and make a fire in it. Let it cool down and make another fire two or tree days afterthe first one. The fire has to warm up the entire oven, leave the door open. When the oven is very hot, empty it and wait until it cools down a little. Then you can put your food inside, close the door and wait until it is cooked! Enjoy your meal!

What do we need ?

- Straw-Wood for the door- Plank for the ground- Sand- Nail-Pallet-Clay- Hands and motivation!

How can we build it ?

Step 1 :- Fix boards on a palet, define a circle and put a lot of nails into the circle (75 cm) so that the oven wont be able to move once it wil be dry.- The largest side of the palet will be for the door.

Step 2 : First layer- Mix one bucket of clay with six buckets of straw an make with it a 4cm coach on the nails.- Mix one bucket of clay with with one bucket of straw. Remove it on the first circle, 3,5cm smaller.- Mix 1 bucket of clay with 3 buckets of sand. Remove it on the second circle 3,5 cm smaller. Use the same mis to make an overhang for the entry of the oven and the door.- Make a liquid clay and cover everything with it.- Cut a half circled door of 45 cm large in a piece of wood.- Let it dry at least 24 hours.

Step 3 :- Make a sand dome 21cm height.- Mix one clay bucket with 4 sand buckets and put an 3,5 cm coach of clay on the sand dome.- Mix one and a half bucket of straw for 40 % of a clay bucket. Make a coach of 3,5cm- Mix one straw bucket and one clay bucket- Mix one straw bucket with one clay bucket and an half of sand bucket.

Let it dry three month, and enjoy it !

The preserves andJams

Why is it interesting and what are the effects ?You can make your own jams, you choose the ingredients yourself that you put in the jars. So you know exactly what you’ll eat. That allows us to eat food of higher quality than the fresh food that you buy in supermarkets, also the jams have more vitamins and taste. It’s cheaper because you can use your own vegetables or fruit or you can buy them on the market. It saves time because you can make a lot of food by yourself at a time.

1. Eat foods of higher quality than the “fresh” in supermarkets.Did you know that canned vegetables made the day of collection have improved nutritional qualities, and are tastier than most vegetables “fresh” on the shelves of supermarkets? Retains the full flavor and keep more vitamins than most vegetables that you find “fresh” onthe shelves of the market. In addition, you can choose yourself the ingredients you put in jars. You know exactly what you will eat. You want to eat organic, less salty, etc., or simply make sure the quality of ingredients and safe processing? Only the Home Canning lets

you know exactly what and how is done what is in your plates. You decide.

2. It does a better environmental choice. The environmental cost of manufacturing and transportation of industrial canning isstaggering. Metal canned food is a nonsense which few of us realize the full extent.

The home canning is a practical, positive and exemplary opposing patterns of verconsumption and waste which we are bombarded. This is one way to express; «I am a citizen, not a stupid consumer.

4- This saves valuable time. Many do not make home canned “for lack of time”. Remember that the autoclaving is carried out at high temperature, so much faster than regular baking. If you want to make 8 or 10 plates of beef bourguignon without wanting to keep them, it will ask for 3 hours, 22 minutes per meal .... to “caning” 36 meals of this recipe, it takes 2 hours. Counting, it’s less than 4 minutes per meal ...Imagine you get back from work at night and you are tired. You do not feel like cooking. You open the door of the pantry, and you’re spoiled for choice for a hundred different recipes. You just save your most precious time. You have just to avoid stress without compromising the quality of your diet. You just improve your quality of life, one jar at a time.

3. It saves money while contributing more to the local economy.Ideally, food that you whant to keep should be picked the same day. They will be purchased inpublic market, or better yet, in a local gardener who allows self collection. Furthermore, by buying the bulk of your vegetables for years, suddenly, you will also make considerable savings. You’ll often pay 4-6 times less than the annual average price. The fresh ground beef is on sale? It’s time to potting of spaghetti sauce or chili Con Carne. We can pay for meat and poultry four times cheaper for many recipes!

How to use it ?Preserves and jams made by ourselves can be used up to one year after they had been made!

The householdecological products

Why is it interesting ?It’s interesting as an alternative to conventional cleaning products. These conventional products contain a lot of chemicals that can have a bad effect on human (cancer, diseases) and animal health and our environment (plants, soil, rivers). So, it’s interesting to know that these chemicals are not necessary and that we can do things ourselveswith only degradable / natural products.

What are the effects?Degradable in natureNatural way of cleaningNo bad effects on human healthIt stops the production of petrochemical products

How can we use it?The same as conventional productsWhat do we need? / How can we make the products?General ingredients that we need: water, baking soda, essential oils, soap (Marseille), Vinagre alcohol surfin 10°, spoons.

The solar showers

Why is it interesting? When you are using a normal shower you are spending electricity and a lot of water. But when you are using a solar shower you are using no electricity and less than 20L of water. So you will use a more ecological way of taking a shower.

How can we use it ?You can use it everywere. You just need sun, 20L of water and a place to put the solar shower higher than you. Put the shower in the sun and wait until the water is hot. You can take your shower !

Technical information:You need a solar shower which is well closed and has a pipe. Then you will fill it with water. Control the water temperature because it can be very hot. If it’s too hot, you can have cold water, as much as you want!

Dry toiletsWhy is it interesting ?It is an alternative toilet system which spends no water. A normal toilet in Europe uses about 30 to 60 litres of drinkable water a day for a toilet. This system prevents us from wasting this water and to drink it!Also, when you empty the toilet, you can put it into a compost, after three or four years, you will be able to use it in agriculture, this compost material is very beneficial for fruit trees and agriculture in general.

Why we use it ?Because with using this system you wont spend water and you can keep this water stocks on the world. So you can drink water witch you kept.

How to use it ?You need a big been witch you will use for the toilets. Then you need some wood to cover the shit and pies. After doing your toilet, you need to throwfive or six cops of wood. When the beens are full, you need to empty and whash them, and you can use it again.
