WHO WE ARE & WHAT WE DO
MISSION STATEMENT:
“LIVING WALLS SEEKS TO PROMOTE, EDUCATE, AND CHANGE PERSPECTIVES TOWARD PUBLIC
SPACE IN OUR COMMUNITIES VIA STREET ART.”
Living Walls is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in Atlanta, Georgia.
The goal of Living Walls is to put street artists and academics from across the globe under the same roof to engage in meaningful discourse about our public space. Since its humble beginnings in 2009 as a conference on street art and urbanism, Living Walls has exploded into an internationally celebrated street art movement, encouraging the public to look at their cities with new perspective.
O V E R V I E WEvery August, Living Walls brings murals, public art interventions, and lectures to the City of Atlanta as platforms for dialogue in our communities. The artwork of 89 influential street artists from around the world has adorned various areas of Atlanta as part of a coordinated effort to engage the public via street art.
Living Walls does not just showcase art, but builds a platform for much-needed dialogue in the city. Along with changing the urban landscape, the lecture series offer a broad spectrum of relevant topics aimed to highlight a number of issues associated with public space. Previous series have explored the power of public art as a social and economic force in the city of Atlanta and as a means for unique solutions for making cities more livable.
LIVING WALLS CONFERENCE
Living Walls Concepts is a secondary branch and expansion of the organization that provides public art programming year-round. These multidisciplinary projects consist of artist lectures, community workshops, gallery exhibitions, and mural series. Concepts seeks to create a more intimate relationship between the artist and the community.

THE PL AN FOR 2014
Throughout the year, Living Walls will continue to expand its mission to previously untapped regions of Georgia. Together with gloATL, the two organizations will join forces with the Georgia Council for the Arts for the Inspired Georgia Tour. A traveling exhibition of public art, provided by Living Walls, and public art performances, presented by gloATL, will explore communities beyond the I-285 Perimeter. During the months of March, September, and November, Living Walls will journey to three Georgia cities: Summerville, Dublin, and Kingsland.
CONCEPTS - BOULEVARD TUNNEL INITIATIVE Living Walls has partnered with the Boulevard Tunnel Initiative (BTI) to create two murals, one on each side, spanning the full length of the tunnel. Thanks to the dedicated clean-up efforts of the BTI, the previously neglected underpass and surrounding walkways will provide a safe, convenient corridor for pedestrians and cyclists, linking the burgeoning Old Fourth Ward and Cabbagetown neighborhoods.
For this project, One Region Atlanta, an initiative of The Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta (CFGA), has joined forces with Living Walls. Communities within CFGA’s 23-county region will submit applications for a mural, and a community project will be inspired by the artwork. Living Walls and CFGA will review applications and select a winning community. Living Walls will then assist with the artist and wall selection, and manage the installation process, including mural permits. The mural will be an original piece designed specifically for the winning community.
2014 will mark the fifth annual Conference for Living Walls. Artists and intellectuals from around the globe will, again, convene in Atlanta for two weeks to enrich our communities and create vibrant public spaces. Artists will continue to connect people to their public space via murals and public art interventions, and guest speakers will raise awareness of the culture of street art and urbanism throughout the City of Atlanta and around the world. Meanwhile, Living Walls will continue to engage the public through a series of events that are free and open to all.

WORDS FROM FRIENDS
“ As a cutting edge, energetic leader in the adaptation of Atlanta’s cityscape, Living Walls is positioned to make significant contributions to the city’s cultural development.”
“ Living Walls artists are Atlanta’s greatest cultural ambassadors. Year in and year out, Living Walls artists raise the bar for public art in the City of Atlanta and transform our ideas of what is possible in public art. Living Walls has put Atlanta on the international map for visual artists as no other group has.”
- KWANZA HALL ATLANTA C ITY COUNCILMAN (D ISTR ICT 2 )
“ Living Walls has enlivened countless Atlanta neighborhoods with beautiful, thought-provoking murals by artists from Atlanta and around the world. Along the way, it has created a new public sphere by fostering conversations among people who don’t usually participate or get acknowledged in debates about our city. The organization also has made visible the city’s diverse creative energy that’s cultivating a new sense of community that is both local and global. Its annual conference situates the organization’s work within an intellectual and social context that contributes to new conversations about art, urbanism, development and community. Living Walls is a rare radical idea that has succeeded so well that it’s hard to imagine Atlanta without it. I am very proud to support Monica and her amazing team.”

REACH AND TARGET AUDIENCE
The Living Walls core supporter is a sophisticated urbanite who is highly aware of social events and has a strong interest in the non-traditional arts scene. They get their news from the internet and their social scene from their smartphone. They understand the community-based mission of Living Walls, but may be attracted to the less structured version of street art. Living Walls appeals to the scholar and the artist. Because the Living Walls mission encompasses public discourse, the supporter of Living Walls is not just a fan but an avid participant and follower. Due to our high visibility in the city, our target audience is the general public.
Attendance at the Living Walls Conference is expected to be 5,000+. Public visitation of the mural locations over the single week is expected to be 10,000+. Global reach through press, social media and blogs is inestimable.
