After watching the 2012 Summer Olympics, some of us realize that we are not all Olympic athletes. We can, however, be overachievers. There are so many people out there who appear to be ordinary, but what they are doing with their lives is absolutely extraordinary!

The trick to much of their success is that they are not attempting to do the wild, outrageous things that makes us gasp, but rather just the ordinary things like running their business, improving the health of others, and simply living a quality life. The key difference is that they are working at making the ordinary appear absolutely extraordinary.

Type 2 diabetes is deadly … and on the rise. The history of this metabolic disorder shows it typically affected adults above the age of forty. however, since 1990, its onset began occurring in a much younger population that included teens and children, who were previously only affected by type 1 (juvenile diabetes).

No matter your age, when you have type 2 diabetes, either your body does not produce enough insulin or your cells do not utilize the available insulin, which is vital for channeling blood sugar (glucose) into the cells to be used as energy. Consistently high blood sugar levels can create a chronic source of inflammation throughout the body, leading to cellular damage of tissue and organs.

Your health care practitioner can conduct tests that measure your blood sugar levels to determine whether or not you have diabetes, which is largely preventable even for those with a family history of this disease.

The Causes Although the precise cause of diabetes

remains unknown, there are associated risk factors including high blood pressure, high blood triglyceride levels, high-fat diet, and high alcohol intake. For those with a genetic predisposition to diabetes, obesity as well as a sedentary lifestyle can cause the onset of the disease.

Over the last few decades, widespread obesity in the North American population has resulted from lifestyles that include little physical activity combined with the popular trend of opting for foods of convenience over proper nutrition. The top sources of calories come from sugary drinks and primarily wheat-based fast foods. It is no wonder that nearly 26 million children and adults in the United States have diabetes, 79 million Americans have prediabetes, and 9 million Canadians live with diabetes or prediabetes—a condition that can lead to type 2 diabetes.

Even with such frightening statistics, a common misconception is that diabetes is not as serious as cancer or heart disease. however, according to Dr. John B. Buse, who is currently

a professor at the University of North Carolina (UNC) School of Medicine in Chapel hill, North Carolina, and serves as the director of its Diabetes Care Center, “It is a disease that does have the ability to eat you alive.”

Symptoms and Deadly EffectsYou can have prediabetes or type 2 diabetes

for many years even before any symptoms appear: unusual thirst, frequent urination, weight change (gain or loss), extreme fatigue or lack of energy, blurred vision, frequent or recurring infections, slow-healing cuts and bruises, tingling or numbness in the hands or feet, and erectile dysfunction.

Over time, chronic high blood sugar levels associated with type 2 diabetes can cause a number of deadly effects including blindness, stroke, heart disease, kidney failure, and nerve damage to the extremities, which can lead to foot ulcers, numbness, tissue damage, and amputation.

The SolutionsType 2 diabetes is not only controllable, it

is preventable. Keep in mind that if you have diabetes, positive lifestyle changes, such as a healthy nutritional intake and an exercise routine, must become long-term habits to effectively control the disease and avoid its deadly effects.

Maintaining your ideal body weight, healthy blood pressure levels, and your target cholesterol and triglycerides numbers promotes good health. Effectively managing stress is also a major factor in staying healthy and avoiding diseases like diabetes.

For extra nutritional support, The AIM Companies™ provides a regimen of natural supplements that help to prevent or control type 2 diabetes.

AIM GlucoChrom™

Chromium is an essential trace mineral that enables insulin to work effectively at channeling blood sugar into the cells of the body. GlucoChrom’s chromium comes from a common baker’s yeast that is organically bound to trivalent chromium to provide a natural, bioavailable source of this mineral. This means that the body recognizes it as something that belongs in the bloodstream, unlike a synthetic form that is identified as a toxin that the body must eliminate.

GlucoChrom also provides three additional ingredients that make it one of the most effective natural products available for increasing the effective action of insulin. Vanadium citrate is an ultra-trace mineral that activates insulin receptors. Gymnema silvestre leaf stimulates insulin secretion. Bittermelon fruit stimulates the activity of enzymes that convert glucose into cell energy in the form of glycogen.

AIM BarleyLife®

Supplementing with BarleyLife may just be the best thing that anyone can do to maintain good health. And a 2010 medical study of medicinal plants indicates that barley grass powder is therapeutic for diabetics because it can significantly lower fasting blood sugar levels. In the group studied, those taking the barley grass powder had their cholesterol levels reduced as well, so the risk of coronary heart disease was also lowered.

AIM Herbal Fiberblend®, AIM FibreBalance® (CAN), or AIM fit ’n fiber® (US)

For supplementary fiber, AIM offers a choice of three effective products for increasing the intake of this nutritional necessity. Getting enough fiber—21–38 grams daily—is an integral step in maintaining your overall health and preventing disease. For those with diabetes, soluble fiber is particularly beneficial in helping to control blood sugar levels by delaying the emptying of the stomach, slowing down the release of glucose into the bloodstream, and diminishing the rise of blood glucose after meals.

It’s worth repeating: Even for those with a genetic predisposition for the disease, diabetes is largely preventable. Use AIM products as a positive factor for pre vention.

AIM Athlete

When the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, begins—a little over one year from now—AIM sponsored athlete and Olympic bronze medal winner J.R. Celski will be leading the U.S. speed skating team in a quest for Olympic gold, having secured a spot on the US World Cup Team on September 29, 2012. his schedule is filled with World Cup races supported by nonstop training as he prepares for his second Winter Olympic Games.

At the same time, J.R. made time during his intense training schedule to show his support for AIM and the children of Idaho. On September 15, 2012, The AIM Companies™ teamed up with Protect Idaho Kids for a day that featured free skating, chances to win free prizes, including bicycles, and an opportunity to skate with J.R. Celski, who signed autographs and posed for photographs. Approximately 350 people came to the event, where they also met AIM Garden Trio mascots—loved by those of all ages.

Along with being interviewed for Chan - nel 7 Boise news (KTVB), J.R. visited AIM headquarters the same day for a photo session and videotaping, and he met up with Ryan Davis, AIM’s Quality Assurance Manager. Later that evening, J.R. had dinner with Ron Wright, AIM President, CEO, and co-owner; Greg Wright, AIM Chief Operating Officer; and Darla Upton, AIM Chief Communications Officer; and other AIM employees, all of whom enjoyed the evening with this determined, AIM-sponsored Olympic athlete.

“My goal for the Olympics this time around is gold, nothing less,” J.R. said. “In the last Olympics, with my injury, I was just feeling lucky to be there. I don’t think

that any of my competitors are thinking anything less than winning gold.”

To achieve his goals, J.R. along with his speed skating teammates train six days a week, four to eight hours each day. The training includes ice sessions, dry land exercises, bike rides, sand track workouts, and much more. The most exhausting days are Mondays and Wednesdays when the team participates in a pair of two-hour-long ice sessions.

A key for J.R. to sur-vive and succeed with this schedule is his nutritional intake. J.R. said. “We train so much during the day, we have to find the right food and nutrition to put in our bodies to last through these trainings.”

This time … Olympic Gold

6 theaimcompanies.com I 1-800-456-2462

Page 7: Living Well - November 2012

J.R.’s nutritional advantage is AIM products. From morning to night, he supplements with a variety of AIM whole-food concentrates and nutritional supplements.

“When I wake up in the morning, nutrition is the first thing that’s on my mind. What am I going to put into my body that is going to help me through these workouts? The first thing I take is the AIM Garden Trio® because I know that those three components are very important in my daily routine. The beets play a huge role in endurance. I get my protein from AIM ProPeas®, and I take AIMega® to get omega-3 essential fatty acids. Everything that I take from AIM is very important in my regimen.”

Interspersed within his training is a World Cup racing schedule that will take J.R. and the U.S. team across the globe to compete against the best speed skaters in the world, most of whom will be racing right alongside J.R. at the Olympics. This World Cup season, which began in October and will end with the championships in March, is the last full season before the 2014 Olympics. For that reason, skating well takes on added importance for J.R. and the other skaters.

Testimonials should not be construed as representing results

everybody can achieve.

I remember a time when being sick meant having a runny nose or a sore tummy. Now, I see it as something that I had been living in fear of.

I may have looked and acted like a normal teenage girl, but inside, it was a completely different story. Fatigue, extreme cramps, loss of appetite, mood swings, chest pains, migraines, and muscle spasms were normal for me. Imagine having all of these problems, and doctors still tell you that you’re healthy. I don’t know how many times I’ve heard, “Go take some Advil—that should help for a little while.” What they didn’t understand was that I didn’t want just “a little while,” I wanted long-term good health.

I never understood why everything seemed wrong with me, but according to the doctor, I was a healthy girl. In 2010, at the age of sixteen, I got really sick. It started on my lips as cold sores that spread to my mouth and then down my throat and stomach. There was pain that I can’t even begin to explain. Along with a temperature of 104, I couldn’t eat, drink, or talk because when I tried, it felt like I was swallowing knives. Sleeping was my only option.

We called the health line and went to doctors, the Urgent Care Center, walk-in clinics, and hospitals. I prayed that I would be given the strength to get through it without any help, but with no food or water, a hospital was where I needed to be. Finally at McMaster Children’s hospital emergency, where they could not draw my blood because it was too thick, I was rushed into ICU. They told me that if I had waited another day, I probably would’ve died. An infectious disease specialist called me a medical mystery. After two weeks of IV for nutrition, I was discharged. They said I was better, but I wasn’t better.

It came back in the spring of 2012. I feared the same things would occur and that I would be hospitalized once again. Many medical visits later, they still didn’t know the cause of what had made me fear even the common cold. My mom heard that there was something that would give me the nutrients I needed to help restore unhealthy cells. She called AIM Directors Fred and Marlene hampshire and asked if we could get AIM BarleyLife® as soon as possible. Fred made a personal visit, giving us what he had left of his own while we waited for our order to make its arrival. I took it immediately.

Because of the sores, I couldn’t swallow, so I swished around the BarleyLife in my mouth to fight off the infection. Within three days after I started swallowing it, I was off my meds and almost completely healthy. Within a week, I was doing gym, homework, and got a grade of 89 percent on my vocals test the day I returned to school.

I’ve come to realize that sometimes we have to be weak to get stronger, and I believe that BarleyLife was a big part of what helped me find my strength. I am grateful that I received it when I did. Thanks, Fred and Marlene, Edna Smith

(Chairman’s Club Director), and the staff at AIM that gave my mother

advice. As an eighteen-year-old, I’m thrilled to be able

to work at my summer job, play soccer, and no longer be afraid

of sickness—even the common cold.

keep people indoors where germs can spread more easily. Busy holiday planning can lead to stress, which can suppress the immune system.

An answer to the problem of winter illness is balanced living and natural supplementation from AIM.

Two AIM products in par-ticular, AIM FloraFood® and AIM Proancynol® 2000, can help with the unique challenges presented by the coming winter months.

FloraFood contains a special blend of three powerful friendly bacteria—L. gasseri, B. bifidum, and B. longum. These friendly bacteria counteract the unfriendly bacteria in the gut, helping to improve digestive health. Approximately 70 percent of the immune system is in the gut, so it’s important to maintain a healthy level of intestinal flora.

In addition to their digestive health properties, these probiotics enhance the immune response of the body, manufacture vitamins B and K, and produce antibiotics and antifungals that prevent the growth of harmful bacteria.

Proancynol 2000 is AIM’s antioxidant powerhouse, providing seven antioxidant-rich ingredients: green tea extract, rosemary

extract, grape seed extract, N-acetylcysteine, alpha-lipoic acid, lycopene, and selenium. The wide variety of antioxidants from these ingredients work together on many levels,

including antioxidant recycling, to achieve an enhanced, combined effect to fight free radicals.

The free-radical-fighting properties of Proancynol 2000 give a big boost to the immune system, especially during the winter months.

Member Heidi Roder, Waterloo, Ontario, Canada

I have taken Proancynol 2000 since 2003, and since then, I never had a cold. My daily regimen of AIM products looks like this: in the morning, I take eight AIM BarleyLife® vegetable capsules; at lunch, I take Proancynol and AIM Frame Essentials®; and at night, I take another eight BarleyLife vegetable capsules. I have the good fortune to be healthy all these years of taking AIM products, together with a healthy diet.

Kerry Chambers is a high-performance individual from South Africa. You can tell by the way she carries herself—not bashful, disrespectful, or arrogant. She has an air of confidence and strength that you do not see in everyone. Kerry also has a newfound air of joy and freedom, which has not always been the case. From the age of eleven, Kerry suffered from debilitating migraines.

It was a struggle for her from day one. Who would think that an eleven-year-old could get migraine headaches? Little Kerry suffered from regular attacks, which only seemed to get worse. The family took her to see every specialist, all of whom prodded, probed, and scanned her from head to toe in an effort to alleviate the excruciating pain. Not a single doctor was able to identify the actual cause, and even worse, they were not able to offer any relief. The migraines continued, and many of the specialists determined that Kerry’s migraines were most likely the result of a neck injury that must have occurred during her years of competitive diving.

Back when she was only four, Kerry was already a determined athlete in the sport of platform diving. She represented South Africa in international competitions, and at the age of thirteen, Kerry was sent off to Leeds in England to train for the Olympics. But the hard grind of four to seven hours of intense training per day eventually took a toll on her, and she later opted out of professional sports altogether in favor of enjoying all of them.

By the time she reached her teens, the severity of her headaches worsened, often building in pain over a few weeks and then manifesting with sometimes as many as three migraine attacks a day, or culminating in an enormous cluster of five or six in a single day, which would leave Kerry without sight for up to twenty-four hours. Unsympathetic teachers in a rigid school system insisted that she carry on through the pain, making her studies a misery. The young girl’s social dilemma of not ever being able to be dependable meant isolation and rejection.

Migraine Relief from AIM

Kerry Chambers

Page 11: Living Well - November 2012

In Kerry’s case, no migraine trigger was identified. Migraines came upon her at any given time without much warning. The constant nausea following an attack meant that her sleep patterns were terribly erratic, which greatly affected her scholastic performance. While Kerry learned to live with the condition, it was traumatic for her to have to deal with people’s disbeliefs that she even had a condition and their condescending looks as if to say, “She is probably just faking it again.” Doctors prescribed Trepiline (anti-depressant) and Topamax (anticonvulsant) and sent her on her way.

In 2011, when Kerry had finals at school, the attacks became violent, leaving her without depth perception and preventing her from studying. Desperate to see her succeed, her parents gave up on the orthodox approach and took her to see AIM Chairman’s Club Director Judy Dolev.

Judy asked her for only one thing: “Give me at least three months. If I cannot get rid of your migraines in that time, then I won’t be able to help you.” Judy put Kerry on a regimen of AIM LeafGreens™, AIM CellSparc 360®, AIM GinkoSense™, and CalciAIM™.

Within the space of three months, the migraines moved out. During those first three months, Kerry experienced a small number of attacks, but nothing compared to what she used to have. As the exams approached, her family held their breaths, expecting an onslaught with the additional stress, but it never came. Kerry sailed through her exams without a single migraine for the first time in nearly eight years. her body chemistry had improved with the use of AIM products.

Kerry is now lively, bubbly, and full of joy, and living in Cape Town, where she has embarked on a career in fashion. The pain, discomfort, and embarrassment of the migraines have left her—seemingly for good.

Testimonials should not be construed as representing results everybody can achieve.

One of the causes of migraines may be changes in body chemistry. For example, during a migraine, levels of serotonin decrease in a part of the brain, resulting in a narrowing of blood vessels, which go into spasm. This might be the cause of visual disturbances (including flashing lights, zigzag lines, and hallucinations) called migraine auras. Soon after, the blood vessels dilate, which is thought to cause the headache. The exact reason for the drop in serotonin is not yet fully understood.

Some scientists believe that fluctuating levels of hormones are closely linked to the cause of migraines. Some women who experience migraines say they are more likely to have an attack around the time of their period. This is known as a menstrual migraine. Just before a period, levels of estrogen fall. Women can have menstrual migraines from two days before to three days after the first day of their period. About one in seven women who get migraines have an attack only around the time of their period. This is known as a pure menstrual migraine. Around six in ten women with migraines have attacks at other times, too.

The many factors identified as migraine triggers create a list that seems endless. Such triggers include emotional, physical, dietary, environmental, and medicinal factors. We all have many of these potential triggers in our own lives, but not every body responds the same way.

The AIM Companies™

Revised Advertising Policy(Member Agreement and

Internet and Advertising Guidelines)

Due to the ongoing complaints and unfair advantage of Members advertising The AIM Companies’ (AIM) products on the Internet below suggested retail pricing, as well as advertising free shipping and special offers/discounts, AIM is introducing a new Member Advertising Policy effective January 1, 2013.

AIM Members are “Independent Distributors” direct selling AIM products. Whereas AIM cannot restrict what prices Members choose to sell AIM products at, AIM does reserve the right to enact a revision to the Member Advertising Policy, number 3.3 in the Member Agreement and Advertising section of the Internet and Advertising Guidelines, that will prohibit general consumers from viewing a Member’s below suggested retail pricing on the Internet.

Direct selling is about personal service or person-to-person relationships. In order to protect this personal direct selling experience and establish a fair advantage to all AIM Members, any Member advertising below suggested retail pricing, such as wholesale and below wholesale pricing, as well as advertising free shipping and special offers/discounts must either; 1) set up a link whereby a general consumer entering the site must input a password or pass code to view the Member’s below suggested retail pricing (the password or pass code must be obtained from the Member), or 2) set up a checkout link whereby a general consumer can view the below suggested retail pricing at checkout. A “general consumer” is considered a person who has not had any previous contact with the Member. Members may advertise below suggested retail pricing to those who have had previous contact with the Member.

Therefore, starting January 1, 2013, AIM Members are no longer allowed to advertise wholesale, below wholesale pricing, as well as free shipping and special offers/discounts via their personal websites on the Internet unless that site is password or pass code protected, or the below suggested retail pricing is only viewable at checkout.

AIM Members are prohibited from advertising below suggested retail pricing on Internet media outlets, including, but not limited to, Internet search results, Facebook, MySpace, blogs, sponsored ads, popup ads, and banner ads.

AIM Members are prohibited from advertising below suggested retail pricing in mailings, promotional materials, and e-mails to those who have not had previous contact with the Member.

Recipe

Gluten-free

FruitCake

Ingredients:

¾ cup (115 g) currants

¾ cup (115 g) sultanas or raisins

½ cup (70 g) mixed candied peel

½ cup (60 g) chopped glace cherries

3 tbsp. (25 g) of chopped crystallized ginger

1⁄3 cup (45 g) chopped walnuts

4 tbsp. brandy or cognac

½ cup (1 stick, 120 g) unsalted butter, softened

1⁄3 cup (80 g) packed brown sugar

2 medium eggs2⁄3 cup (90 g) AIM gluten-free all-purpose flour

¼ cup (35 g) ground almonds (almond meal)

1 tsp. ground mixed spice (or apple pie spice)

¼ tsp. ground cloves

Toppings:

9 walnut halves

8 whole glace cherries

Directions: Start the cake the day before you want to bake it. Put the currants, sultanas/raisins, mixed peel, glace cherries, ginger, and chopped walnuts in a bowl. Add the brandy, cover, and soak overnight.

The next day, preheat oven to 250 degrees Fahrenheit (130 degrees Celsius).

In a large bowl, cream the butter and sugar together until paler and fluffy. Add the eggs one at a time, beating between each addition. Add the flour, ground almonds, and spices, and slowly fold in until a smooth mixture is obtained. Add the brandy-soaked fruits and stir in.

Spoon the mixture into a deep, 15 cm (6 in.) round cake pan lined with baking paper, and spread the mixture until level. Decorate the top of the cake with the walnut halves and whole glace cherries, placing them in a circular pattern.

Bake the cake in the middle of a preheated oven for about 90 minutes. A skewer inserted into the middle of the cake should come out clean. The cake will remain soft to the touch when baked, unlike a pound cake that will spring back when pressed with your fingertips. The finished color is not very different from the uncooked state, and there will often be a residue of nut oil on the surface, but don’t worry, the oil is absorbed back into the cake on cooling. Remove from the oven and let stand for an hour or two before turning out onto a wire rack to cool completely.

Allow the cake to set for 24 hours before serving. The longer you can leave it to mature, the better. Cut with a sharp, serrated knife using a sawing motion. The cake will keep for 6–8 weeks in an airtight container.

delicious. You have the choice of making the cake and double wrapping it in a container for up to two months, or eat it as we did, one week later. It was divine.

For a non-alcoholic version, perhaps try soaking the fruit in freshly squeezed orange juice. You will note the recipe calls for a 15 cm (6 in.) tin.

This recipe was taken from the book Home Baking by Meg Rivers, who owns an artisan bakery based in the Cotswolds in the UK. Meg has a world famous, mail-order bakery.

This recipe is based on the first cake Meg ever sent out by mail-order; however, it is the gluten-free version. Apart from the lack of gluten, making the cake a little crumblier when sliced, it is every bit as good—rich, moist, and
