The current socio7olitical ro8ects of ,uen Vi%ir #also Suma9 :awsa' in

Ecuador$ and Vi%ir ,ien #,oli%ia$ imlemented b' Andean go%ernments

together with citi;en mo%ements ha%e gained much attention in recent

debates5 (ften the' are regarded as e?@?$5 0owe%er as e%idence from Ecuador

shows the wa' these ro8ects are concetuali;ed b' state authorities

remains within the hegemonic Western aradigm of anthroocentric

economic and human de%eloment5 At the go%ernmental le%el this

aradigm aears to be rhetoricall' embedded in discourses of human

rights 2green leadershi3 and minorit' rotection while also drawing on

indigenous eistemological traditions5
