SUPERCHARGE YOUR JAGUARYou can enjoy improved fuel economy and restored engine performance with H.A.FOX’s Engine Decontamination Treatment.

H.A.FOX LEEDS have a bespoke custom-made machine, which has been purposely engineered to decontaminate both petrol and diesel engines.

Think of it as removing the cholesterol from the heart of your car!

- Drastically reduces the exhaust emissions

- Increases MPG

- Reduces the engine’s internal friction allowing smoother running

- Prolongs the engine’s life

- Allows the oil to flow around the engine more efficiently

- Nothing else like this exists, apart from a manual engine strip

This is treatment has been tested and developed for 20 years in 50 countries with over 1,000,000 treatments completed worldwide.

Please ask a Service Advisor or the Service Manager for more information.

H.A.FOX LEEDS39-41 Barrack Road, Leeds LS7 4AB 0113 399 6314 www.hafox.LEEDS.jaguar.co.uk

*Engine performace is restored by removing old oil residue from the engine along with sludge, varnish and debris which until now could not be removed during a routine oil change. This then allows the new oil to perform in the way it was designed - to protect against friction between the metal surfaces.

You may recall that last year I reported a decline in funds raised from the Year Book, despite all the hard work undertaken in respect of its production.

Many, many hours are spent organising, chasing and liaising with advertisers and patrons in order to generate much needed monies for the Leeds Jewish Representative Council (LJRC).

This year we have seen a further change, with Michele Jackson having retired from the position of Executive Officer and Ann Dewar taking over. Whilst this has added to the difficulty (because of continuity issues) it has also brought some benefits. Michele’s task of raising money through the Year Book was something that she threw herself into and was extremely good at. I would like to publicly thank her again in this Year Book for her efforts over the years - I daren’t say how many – during which I have been Editor. I’m sure that I speak for everyone in wishing her well in her future endeavours. However, with Ann’s introduction have come new ideas, new systems and hopefully a fresh perspective to our efforts.

From first indications, we seem to have improved significantly on the funding raised this year, comparative to last year, although we are still not at the levels we have reached in previous years. That is something that the LJRC will continue to work on, to improve our efficiencies and improve our rates of return.

One thing that does seem to be the case this year, is that although we have managed to increase the number of advertisers by up to 20%, we have not increased the revenue received, as some of the advertisers have not taken as large a space as they had previously. The main concern however has been and continues to be, the diminishing numbers of patrons who support us. It is particularly evident that there is a lack of awareness of the LJRC amongst younger members of the Community and consequently, an absence of support from them. In 2015 we hope to be better at promoting our work via newsletters and social media so that everyone will have a better idea of what we do and appreciate our input into community life. Our hope is that it will translate into financial support but we would also welcome young blood willing to become involved in the running of the LJRC.

The LJRC now is a very different animal to that which existed when the Year Book was initiated and even through my own years as Editor I have witnessed a dramatic change. Furthermore, the Community has changed as well, in many ways for the better, with all of the amazing advantages and facilities now available. When representing the Community, whether on a local or national level, I speak with pride of our achievements and of the vitality and viability of the Leeds Jewish Community. This is in no small measure a result of the Community pulling together and moving in the same direction. As an umbrella organisation we are here to lead, cajole, provoke thought and organise and I think that, together with the very many talented volunteers and the excellent professionals we have working within the Community, we do that successfully. However, in order for us to fulfil this role - and I want us to enhance what we do - we need to be securely funded. That is why this publication is so important.

Editorial for the Leeds Jewish Representative Council Yearbook

Page 14: Ljrc yearbook 2015

12

This publication will be posted on the Leeds Jewish Community website and also the Leeds Jewish Representative Council website which is about to be launched (and should be up and running by the time this publication is produced).

We are always looking for new ideas, new supporters and new ways of raising funding. If you have ideas or wish to join a small group of fundraisers, please contact us.

Before closing I must pay particular thanks to a number of people.

Firstly, all those patrons and advertisers who have supported us, with special thanks to those who do so each and every year. Without your continued support, we could not run the LJRC. As many readers will know, the Year Book produces circa 50% of our annual income. The annual income is relatively small and we have and continue to look at efficiencies to keep our running costs down to make even better use of our income. However, your support is very gratefully received and absolutely fundamental to the survival of this organisation.

Secondly I must also thank the Year Book committee: Alan Dunwell, Sue Baker, Rebecca and Stephane Ganach, Stephen Mitchell, Frank Rosenhead, Sarah Saunders, for their help and support. To Ian Goldman for proof reading and our publishers Chartwork for their help.

Finally, I must thank our new Executive Officer, Ann Dewar, who has done a sterling task of putting this publication together and all the work that is associated with it.

Thank you very much to all of those who support us.

The Leeds Jewish Community Charitable Trust(Charity number 517835)

The Leeds Jewish Community Charitable Trust was established in 1986 and aims to provide funds for such local Jewish Charities as from time to time need financial assistance.

The Trustees are the Honorary Officers of the Leeds Jewish Representative Council and they draw upon their knowledge of the needs of the community to determine how these charitable funds are to be distributed.

Donations may be made to the Leeds Jewish Community Charitable Trust not only in one’s own name, but also in the name of a friend, perhaps to recognise some anniversary or special occasion or for any other reason at all. Special cards have been printed for this purpose and a specimen is reproduced below:

The inclusion of a bequest to the Leeds Jewish Community Charitable Trust in one’s will is an excellent way of ensuring that the legacy supports general Jewish charities operating within the Leeds area.

Please contact the Representative Council Office or any officer for further details

Brit Milah (Orthodox)

The London Beth Din feels it incumbent to draw attention to the importance

of engaging only qualified Mohelim to perform Brit Milah.

It should be noted that all Mohelim including Doctors registered with

the Initiation Society have received special instruction to carry out the

ritual operation in accordance with Halachic requirements. No one,

whether medically qualified or otherwise, is admitted to the Society’s

roll of registered Mohelim unless qualified as regards religious fitness,

knowledge of the Dinim and surgical competence. To avoid any doubt as

to the Halachic validity of a circumcision, it is therefore advisable only to

use the services of a registered Mohel.

Contact: for Brit Milah (Orthodox)

Please contact your Rabbi or Synagogue Office.

Brit Milah (Progressive)

Brit Milah is the procedure of performing circumcision as a religious

procedure, with appropriate prayers. It can only be performed on Jewish

boys. Circumcision is a surgical procedure that can be performed on

any boy.

For those parents affiliated to the progressive congregations, recognised

Mohelim are registered with the Association of Reform and Liberal

Mohelim (ARLM). All members of the ARLM are qualified doctors, able to

do both Brit Milah and circumcision.

Contact details for Mohelim can be obtained through the various

synagogue offices.

Guidance for the Bereaved

When families were much larger and life expectation shorter than today, most people knew

exactly what to do when a member of the family died. Nowadays, we encounter death

much less often and as a result many are uncertain as to what they should do.

The object of this brief guide is to indicate what you should – and perhaps more important

– what you should not do. Most important, do not panic and do not telephone funeral

directors, synagogue officers or the Registrar of Births & Deaths in the middle of the night.

If you are in doubt, take advice along the following lines:

Normal circumstances

If a death occurs during normal office hours:

You should notify the office of the deceased’s synagogue or burial society immediately and

they will be able to help and advise you.

If you do not know of which synagogue (if any) the deceased was a member, contact the

Secretary of your own synagogue and ask advice. If a Jewish person dies in the Leeds area

even if he or she is not a member of any synagogue or burial society, arrangements will be

made for burial in a Jewish cemetery.

A Death Certificate is required and this is normally obtained from a doctor who has been

treating the deceased – either the GP or a hospital doctor. The Certificate has to be taken

to the Office of the Registrar of Births & Deaths in the One Stop Centre, 2 Great George

Street, Leeds LS2 8BA (Tel. 0113 222 4408). Please telephone during office hours to

make an appointment. The Registrar will issue a Disposal Form without which the funeral

director cannot make preparations for the funeral. Please be aware that the death must be

registered in the district where the deceased passes away. If any difficulties arise, seek the

advice of the synagogue office.

If death occurs outside normal office hours:

Linda Schulman and Susan Cohen have been appointed Deputy Registrars for Jewish

Funerals.

They are on duty from out Shabbat (Saturday night) until Sunday night and on Bank

Holidays.

As soon as the family of the deceased are in possession of the certificate of death from

the doctor attending they can come to Susan or Linda who can issue the green form which

enables the removal and burial of the deceased.

The benefit of this service means people no longer have to wait until the Registrar's Office

is open, thus enabling burial within twenty four hours.

Abnormal circumstancesIf death occurs in circumstances where a doctor is not permitted to issue a Death Certificate, the death has to be reported by the doctor to the Coroner, and the Registrar cannot issue a disposal certificate. Here again you should contact the Synagogue secretary who in turn will deal with the Coroner’s office. Please do not contact the Coroner’s office yourself. The Coroner and his staff are aware of Jewish requirements and you can trust them to do all they reasonably can to expedite the release of the body. You would be wise not to make funeral arrangements until the Coroner has released the body.

Note:You are not obliged to permit a post-mortem where it is not required by law or practice. If in doubt seek the advice of your Rabbi or Minister before giving your consent or authorisation to a post-mortem.

membership of around 40,000. In Leeds, as happens all around the country,

regular meetings are held every Shabbat afternoon for ages 6 - 15. Just turn up

between 3pm and 5pm.

All our activities are centred at Shadwell Lane Shul, and meetings are taken by a

dedicated band of enthusiastic and committed leaders.

The meetings focus on Judaism and Israel and are both interesting and fun.

Other BA activities also include:-

• Regular Sunday activities for all ages.

• National Summer and Winter Camps, and other regional and national activities.

• Israel Camp after GCSEs.

• Two separate year schemes in Israel.

And finally

• The opportunity to become involved in the largest and

strongest Jewish Youth movement in the world!

CUBS AND SCOUTS

The motto of the Cubs and Scouts movement is “Be Prepared” and that just about

sums up Cubs and Scouts. This is a unique organisation which teaches boys to be

prepared for all eventualities in life as well as teaching them to respect themselves

and others in this world. The activities are varied and range from community service

to enjoying the great outdoors, cooking, camping, first aid, orienteering, expeditions

and so much more. Can you cope with emergencies and problems? Our boys can!

FEDERATION OF ZIONIST YOUTHAffiliated to the Zionist Federation of Great Britain and Ireland

The Federation of Zionist Youth (FZY) is the

largest pluralist Zionist youth movement in

the United Kingdom.

FZY aims to create young leaders with a

passion for Israel and their Jewish identity.

Our ideology is shaped by Zionism and

is expressed through FZY’s four aims:

Tzedakah (acts of righteousness), Tarbut

(Jewish, culture), Magen (defence of Jewish rights) and Aliyah Nimshechet (moving

to Israel and living out our ideology).

At FZY, we strive to challenge, stimulate, educate and excite British Jewish youth

with imaginative peer-led activity. In Leeds, weekly meetings take place in the

homes of community members (check the Jewish press for details).

The Leeds Society is called ‘Ketura’, which is the name of the FZY/Young Judaea

Kibbutz near Eilat in Israel.

The society caters for 14-17 year olds and meets every Sunday evening with about

35-45 people per meeting. We can be found on Facebook by searching for “FZY

Ketura”

As well as weekly meetings, FZY also runs highly successful summer programmes,

sending over 450 young people to Israel every year on our Israel Tour. Several

teenagers from Leeds have been on FZY programmes – whether Ofek (end of year

9), Kesher (end of year 10) or our famous gap year programme – FZY Year Course.

For more information, check us out at www.fzy.org.uk

HABONIM DROR

Habonim Dror is a socialist-Zionist, culturally Jewish youth movement, that has

activities on a regular basis to instill all the participants with a strong Jewish

and Zionist identity. One of the main aims of Habonim Dror is for its members

to go on after their time in the movement and make aliyah with the intention of

helping to create an ideal Israeli society. All Habonim Dror events are centred

around fundamental values of inclusivity, equality and social responsibility. We run

activities for children aged nine upwards through weekly meetings, weekend, and

residential summer and winter activities, including Israel tour for 16 year olds. In

Leeds, our activities are run mainly from the Zone youth centre, often collaborating

on special events. Post-Israel tour, all members have the opportunity to become

leaders in the movement after partaking in an intensive leadership course, giving

them the necessary and vital tools to help them pass on all they have learned and

taken from the movement in order to give it back to the next generation.

THE JEWISH LADS & GIRLS BRIGADEFor 120 years the JLGB has served our community with honour and is one of British Jewry's greatest unsung heroes. For generations, the JLGB has been inspiring and empowering Jewish young people to maximise their opportunities, to make good choices and to understand the importance of giving back to society.

Today's JLGB is a modern, thriving, innovative and award winning organisation reaching out to over 4000 Jewish young people each year, offering them the opportunity to enrich their lives through a diverse range of positive experiences, exciting activities, leadership training and skills development programmes.

We were delighted that Chief Rabbi, Ephraim Mirvis, helped launch JLGB's youth volunteering initiative 'evolve', which creates a volunteering journey that embraces all Jewish young people throughout primary and secondary school and on to university. evolve will enable and equip all Jewish young people to fully engage in meaningful social action, enhance their employability and transferable skills to become active citizens in their community.

The Duke of Edinburgh's Award, or DofE, is the world's leading youth achievement award and the JLGB is immensely proud to say that since 1956, we have been the exclusive Jewish Licensed Organisation.

The award gives young people between the ages of 14 and 25 the most incredible opportunity to take part in a wonderfully flexible and diverse range of exciting activities, ideas and challenges that leads to a nationally-recognised Award which is highly prized by colleges, universities and employers (and can prove to be a key differentiator for admissions departments).

We can now offer the provision to all Jewish young people throughout the UK at not only all Jewish secondary schools but also, Open Groups, synagogues and youth and community groups.

At the Leeds JLGB group, you can take part in a great range of activities, events and community projects in a safe and friendly atmosphere with people just like you!

Whatever you're interested in doing and regardless of your level of ability, you will find a huge selection of exciting activities and opportunities. This will give you the chance to make friends that will last a lifetime, not just from Leeds or even the UK but from all around the world.

For more information please contact the JLGB Northern Office on Tel: 0161 7678890 or Email: [email protected]

UNION OF JEWISH STUDENTS

The Union of Jewish Students (UJS) is the umbrella organisation for the 95 Jewish &

Israel Societies at universities and colleges throughout Great Britain and Ireland. In

addition to the regional seminars and annual conference, there is an annual Spring

seminar on an educational theme during the March vacation, and two Summer

schemes to Israel.

The JSOC and Israel Officers organise a number of social and cultural programmes

during the year, the highlight of which is ‘Jewish Culture Week” on Campus in

February.

JSOC provides well renowned speakers for the students and the Leeds community

is very welcome to join the students for these events. The JSOC has also set up

The school provides a secular and Jewish education for children aged 2 - 11 years. The nursery and playgroup ensure a happy and constructive start to school life. In the main school the continuation of this education gives them the opportunity to learn and grow both academically, with excellent SATS results, and socially within a warm Jewish environment. The school is supported by SCOPUS Jewish Education Trust and, through the Hebrew and Jewish Studies department, ensures that the children and their families are enriched and inspired through the religion. Fund-raising continues to be a priority, and the school is supported by a very hard working Parents-Teachers-Association Brodetsky Link, which raises funds for visits, outings, prizes, lucky bags for the Yomim Tovim and much more. All prospective parents are welcome to telephone the school and arrange with the head teacher to visit.

JEWISH WOMEN’S AIDJewish Women’s Aid (JWA) is a unique charity for Jewish women and their children who have experienced or are experiencing domestic abuse.

One woman in four will experience domestic violence in their lifetime. It affects all women, regardless of age, education, class, lifestyle or religion; the Jewish community is no different from any other.

That means that every year, thousands of Jewish women will face violence against themselves and their children from within their own home. And there is just one organisation in the UK dealing specifically with the needs of abused Jewish women. That organisation is Jewish Women’s Aid.

Domestic violence can be physical, psychological, financial or emotional abuse from a partner, husband or former partner.

Contact JWA's confidential telephone helpline 0808 801 0500 if you would like to join or volunteer, or to arrange for a JWA representative to talk to your group. www.jwa.org.uk

LEEDS CHAVERIMLeeds Chaverim is a group of Jewish people in their 20’s and 30’s who are looking to add an extra Jewish dimension to their lives. We are entirely independent and receive no funding from any external organisation.

OUR AIM: Is to create an open and non-judgmental environment where you can enjoy a range of Jewish experiences, regardless of whether you are Orthodox or not, practising or non-practising. Whether you want to find out more about Judaism or just enjoy celebrating Shabbat with other like-minded people at one of the Friday night meals, Leeds Chaverim is here to serve you. We meet once a month on a Friday night, for a Shabbat meal where one person hosts the evening and tells everyone to bring a bottle or some food to share (vegetarian or fish). There will be a short discussion based on a Jewish-related theme, prepared by one of our members, but other than that, the aim of the evening is social. If you’re new to Leeds, it’s a great way to meet new people.

diverse mix of people coming together to do what they love doing most.....playing Table

Tennis!!!

Whether a complete novice or an England ranked player, our club welcomes anyone, and if

various practice sessions we hold throughout the week, or through our organised coaching

sessions which can teach you from the very basics to advanced level play.

For kids

The emphasis for all kids playing at our club is to enjoy this wonderful game. And at the same

time we teach some great life skills too, like working as a team, good manners on and off the

table, and how commitment to anything is more important than simply being talented.’ From

our experience anyone can reach a very good standard of being able to play Table Tennis if

they put the hours in....it really is as simple as that!’

AIMS AND ACTIVITIES: PEARLS is the name of the mikvah committee and stands for

Personal Education and Religious Learning Schemes.

PEARLS is responsible for the upkeep and running of the new community mikvah at 411

Harrogate Road by organising fundraising functions and providing education about Mikvah to

different sections of the community, e.g. Bat Chayil classes, women’s groups etc.

PEARLS aims to train those who already use the mikvah as educators who can reach out

to women not yet fully aware of the importance of the mitzvah of Taharas Hamishpochoh. It

hopes to attract those women who, for various reasons, have not attended mikvah since their

wedding. Another vital part of the committee’s work is to encourage brides to continue with

mikvah throughout their marriage.

PEARLS also provide a “wedding pack” to all newly married couples who are married under

orthodox auspices and are to be resident in Leeds. The pack consists of a discount card,

travel candlesticks, information leaflets, Rakusen’s food pack & cookery book, “Really Jewish

Food Guide” and Leeds Jewish Representative Council Year Book.

UJIA is the largest Jewish charity in the UK. We work with UK Jewish communities focusing on young people, strengthening Jewish identity and creating a meaningful connection to Israel through formal and informal educational programmes. In northern Israel, we work with all residents of the multicultural Galil region, regenerating and transforming communities through educational upgrades, working with at-risk youth and promoting economic regeneration. In Leeds we are focused on training our lay leadership and strengthening our connection to Israel through innovative youth provision. We support Brodetsky Primary School, The Zone Youth Centre and the Makor Jewish Life Education Centre. UJIA also funds adult education initiatives such as Torah L’’Am and Adult Bat Chayil classes. We are proud to champion a community Shaliach from Israel to work across the community.

Find out more about our work at contact UJIA at 0113 269 3136 or visit www.ujia.org We are powering young people in the U.K. and Israel.

WIZO IN LEEDS CHAIRMEN: Diane Goldman Liz Jacoby Rosalind Shenderey

Why WIZO is so important – our mission is to help support and strengthen families in Israel. Our vision is that secure and self supporting citizens should grow up in nurturing, self sufficient families. WIZO continues to provide a safety net for the most vulnerable families in Israeli society. Its vital work with all strands of the community touches the lives of 1 in 8 families in Israel today. WIZO opens its doors to the needs of 12,000 children at risk. WIZO’s experience as a world leader in therapy and welfare programmes provides the right environment for these children at risk to grow and flourish in.

One of our many initiatives is the Bar/Bat Mitzvah Campaign. For many Israeli children a Bar/Bat Mitzvah celebration is just a dream. Each year WIZO sponsors Bar/Bat Mitzvah programmes for over 600 children. These children are often from single-parent and disadvantaged families; many are from Ethiopia and the former Soviet Union. All programmes include educational projects and gifts for the children. WIZO helps improve the quality of their lives. You can help a boy or girl to have a Bar/Bat Mitzvah to remember.

There are a number of active groups in Leeds with members ranging from their 30s to their 90s and we also have affiliated members. If you yould like further information please contact our administrator Shelley at Leeds WIZO, 2nd Floor MAZCC, 311 Stonegate Road, Leeds LS17 6AZ.
