PPRESIDENTRESIDENT’’SS MMESSAGEESSAGEIt's been a fairly quiet month; I had to have the rup-tured tendon in my thumb repaired and so couldn'tdrive at Ladies' Day … I still had fun in Control watch-ing the ladies go round at ever increasing speeds withmore confidence as the day wore on. A hearty thanks toall the instructors that came out to help and to Mo whoprovided a blast from the past for breakfast and lunch.I'd forgotten just how good those breakfast burritoswere.

This month the big news is that we are beginning ourCapital Campaign to raise money for High PlainsRaceway - our new track. It is really exciting to seethis kind of progress toward mak-ing our dreams of a top notchvenue get to this stage. You shouldhave received your invitation todonate by now but I'm going toput in another plug here.

The 460 acre High PlainsRaceway site is just 60 miles eastof I-70 & I-25 on State Highway36. Your Board has been closelyinvolved with and fully endorsesthis project. Over the past severalyears, when we knew we werelosing 2nd Creek, we began put-ting away some of the surplusfrom our events to have ready tohelp fund this venture at the Clublevel and, along with the otherfour clubs comprising CAMA,have already made a substantialfinancial investment. Now weurge you, as an RMR member, tobecome a Founding Contributor.

If we all give - I like to think of things in terms of anew set of tires, a couple of weekends in Hastings andMiller, or even a weekend at Pueblo - we can breakground this fall, and be learning a new line next spring.Only with your help can we make this happen and Iknow many of you have been waiting for this opportu-nity.

And, of course, there are the competitions involvedwith the donations: the first club with 100% of boardmembers contributing; the club with the highest per-centage of membership contributing; and others not yetdreamed up. We are a competitive lot, no? You candonate using the envelope provided with your informa-tion materials or online atwww.highplainsraceway.com.

In other news, the Vice Presidents are already at worktrying to put together next year's schedule. We're 'pen-ciling in' our traditional dates from 2nd Creek in hopesthat High Plains will be ready. If there is an event thatyou'd like to see in the schedule or if there's an eventyou want to chair, please contact Dave or Rex. It lookslike our 50th Anniversary year will be chock full ofevents.

This is the time of year the Nominating Committeeputs together the slate for your 2008 Board ofDirectors. It will be announced in the Septembernewsletter and candidates will be presented at the

October meeting - to be held again this year at PrestigeImports' Oktoberfest. Voting will be at the Novembermeeting. If you want to serve, please contact eitherAndy Forberg or me. We also have quite a few stand-ing committees - you can see them listed on page 7.You can help us out by being on those committees aswell. The thing that makes this club run is the hugenumber of people who do volunteer to organize eventsand supporting activities.

I guess that the short version of this article is: Donateand Volunteer! See you out there …

I only wish we had room to printthem all.

It’s tougher than you might think tochoose which ones should go in thenewsletter. I try to pick out newfaces as much as possible, and I tryto capture anything unique about aparticular event. Beyond that it’stough to choose. Fortunately wehave a website where ALL the

Last Chance this year for AMR Track Time

Please come join us for the last AMR Challenge Series DriversEd of the season. Pueblo is a great place to end the track driv-ing events for the year in a safe and fun environment. Showyour friends all what you have learned this season.

At the previous event, one of the pleasant surprises was thatdinner at the track is great. Everyone who dined with us lasttime commented that it was the best track dinner ever. The pastevents have sometimes been a bit warm, but we have it ongood authority that this event will set record lows for tempera-tures.

The Rear View MirrorThe Rear View MirrorTHE REAR VIEW MIRROR

It's like going through a family scrapbook-names, pictures, stories. Some close, some familiar, some not.But still a connection, a common thread. It's history-our history. This resonates especially strongly as weapproach the 50th anniversary of the Rocky Mountain Region in 2008.

RMR has published a newsletter for decades-called, at different times, RMR Porsche, RMR Vista, TheNewsletter, and The Patter-but the Club didn't have a set of back issues. Earlier this year, a long time member ofRMR, Ernie Kemper, donated to the Club his collection of past issues of the newsletter going back to the mid-1980's. After Ernie's donation, a call went out to the members, soliciting earlier issues of the newsletter in aneffort to assemble a complete reference set for the Club. In response, two other members have donated issuesgoing back 37 years, to 1970. This is a wonderful and precious gift. These back issues will be available for refer-ence purposes, and excerpts will be featured monthly in this column, The Rear View Mirror.

This is to formally thank these members for their generous donations and, more importantly, for their com-mitment and service to the Club. In addition to Ernie, who began this process, the most recent donations werefrom Lee Sammons and Bob Benight. Lee and Bob have been members since (at least) the 1970's, and they servedas officers and committee chairs for years. Lee served as Second Vice President, First Vice President, andPresident in the late 1970's, and then as chair of various committees, and he remains involved in the Club today, among other things as a rally master. Bob served as President in the early 1980's-for multiple terms-then as chairof various committees including safety, and he, too, remains an active member. Thank you again, for everything.

Dan Pfister’s StoryDan Pfister’s StoryI just wanted to write and share about my first real "car show" experience. Four weekends ago, I enter our Porschein my first concours event (24th Annual Exotic Sports Car Show & Concours d'Elegance on June 10th,http://www.cpco.org/concours/index.htm). According to the event organizers there were 398 cars, a new record (upfrom 339), in attendance. Several clubs definitely had strong showings including Porsche, Ferrari, Corvette,Mercedes Benz, and Jaguar. The day was certainly very hot but no rain was a welcome thing after many days ofcleaning/preparation.

Totally to my surprise and delight, Claudia (the name Susan and I have given the 1997 Porsche 993 C4S) did muchbetter than expected. She (the car) actually won three ribbons! First Place in Class N-4 (Novice, 1989 to present inPorsche), Favorite Porsche (voted by other owners who entered Porsches), and Top Score for Novice Class (out ofall newbies at show). I learned a lot too as far as what judges are looking for when it comes to an event like thisone. If I enter this event again next year the bar will be raised even further (moving from Novice into Street Class). We (Susan, my mom, & I) took pictures on their digital cameras so I thought it might be sort of fun to pass a fewalong.

A fellow Porsche fanatic,Dan

No track days? No problem! Here's an attraction that'ssure to please!

I looked above my name while signing the guestbookand saw that the previous two visitors were fromMexico and the UK. What we shared was a commoncuriosity that had drawn us to this remote corner ofNebraska. I flashed on Richard Dreyfuss as he wasbeckoned to Devil's Tower, Wyoming by some irre-sistible force in Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Iwas happy to be here in this hot, dusty place. Mylong-suffering wife Ann was simply glad that the smallinterpretive center had working plumbing. We shuffledout into the afternoon sun and beheld the view that wehad driven nearly 100 miles out of our way to see -Carhenge!

Yes, my car-crazed friends, Carhenge. A replication ofStonehenge, England's ancient mystical alignment ofstones that chart the sun and moon's phases.Stonehenge stands alone on a plain in England whileCarhenge, created from vintage American-made auto-mobiles (sorry no 1973S 911 here!), towers above thewestern Nebraska plains. All are spray-painted gray togive the construction a more monolithic feel.

Carhenge, like Stonehenge, consists of the circle ofcars, three standing trilithons within the circle, the heelstone, slaughter stone, and two station stones as well asthe Aubrey Circle, named after Sir John Aubrey whofirst recognized the earthworks and great stones as aprehistoric temple in 1648. The honor of depicting theheel stone goes to a 1962 Caddy!

Carhenge was created 20 years ago this summer by JimReinders, who with the help of some 35 family mem-bers excavated/placed/welded these 38 automobilesinto place assuming the same 96' circle and dimensionas Stonehenge. Jim had built this as a memorial to hisfather who once lived on the farm where Carhengenow stands. In case you weren't there, the dedicationwas held on the summer solstice in 1987 with cham-pagne, poetry, songs, and a play written by the family.

Additional sculptures have been erected at the site, known as the Car Art Reserve. Most notable is the"Fourd Seasons", comprised only of Fords. Inspired byVivaldi's Four Seasons, it depicts the Nebraska wheatcrop's life cycle - as it is planted, grows, is harvested, and then the field lies barren during the windy winter.

Surely by now you are asking yourselves, "what in thehell goes through Quigley's mind to waste a perfectlygood summer afternoon chasing obscure, even dubiousattractions of this sort?" My lovely wife Ann puts upwith these types of impulses from me and contentedherself with reading as I drove "the longish way" homefrom a weekend trip to Lake McConaughy in Ogallala.Perhaps it doesn't rank up there with a run out toMonterey for the Historics, driving a few laps on theNurburgring, or a visit to the Porsche factory. But I'vealways looked for these unique, quirky attractions tofill my auto-addled soul. As bizarre as this replica ofStonehenge is, one does get an appreciation of thetremendous toil and trouble the creators went throughin constructing it. I can imagine the conversation withthe crane company. "Lloyd, better send over the bigcrane for a couple hours tomorrow. I couldn't sleep last

night after I saw how bad the Valiant looked next to theBuick on top of the third trilithon!"

As we headed back across the plains toward Denver, Imentioned Cadillac Ranch to Ann and how it might befun to see it sometime when we just happen to findourselves near Amarillo. Or Cars-on-a-Spike soundslike a blast and is very convenient to Chicago, just ashort run over from all that boring shopping on theMagnificent Mile to Berwyn. She barely looked upfrom her book, muttered something about "owing herbig time" and turned up the CD player.

If you go: Located just north of Alliance, Nebraska -Admission is free but donations to the Friends ofCarhenge are appreciated. Driving time from Denver -a mere 4 hours.

Lotsa ladies - lotsa fun!

By now I've probably told just about everybody whowould listen what a great time I had instructing atLadies Day. Maybe it's that women approach this per-formance driving thing with a better attitude than most

guys. Or maybe it's because they are better at thiscommunication thing. Or is it the lack of testosterone? In any case, and I am speaking for quite a few of theinstructors who were present, we had a ball!

What does 27 Porsches, 54 people, 225 miles of mountain roads and gorgeous Colorado blue skies equal? A tonof fun and lots of happy Porsche enthusiasts.

It all began at the Pegasus Restaurant in Castle Rock, Colorado. Members from AMR, RMR and drivers from asfar away as Idaho and Florida gathered together for breakfast and a drivers' meeting. After a few last sips of cof-fee and some cautionary words, the drivers were off and running. Included in the pack was a brand new and veryrare Porsche 911 GT3RSR, two 2007 Porsche 911 Turbos and slew of Boxsters, Caymans and 911s from everyera. Wow, what an impressive group!

The tour roared to a start with a northeastern approach to Pikes Peak. The green grasses of the high plains prairiestood in stark contrast to the towering snow covered mountains. A few miles more, with their hands firmly on thesteering wheel, the drivers cruised down "Roller Coaster Road" and into the U.S. Air Force Academy for a groupphoto opportunity near the Cadet Chapel. After a few snapshots and a "potty stop", they jumped into their carsand sped-off to a rendezvous with the Garden of the Gods. No matter how many times you see these stunning rockformations, you can't help but being impressed.

Next, the cars lined up for a ride down Main Street in Manitou Springs. The sidewalks were alive with peopleshopping, eating and gawking at our sleek German sports cars. Yea, it's good to be noticed… A few minutes later, the drivers and their passengers began to put some serious miles down as the wondered through the Druid Hills, over Wilkerson Pass and then hit the gas along the straight-a-way in South Park. Trust me, it's not a 911 GT3RSRbecause it's slow. That car can flat out move as it passed many other cars like falling dominoes.

A lunch break in Buena Vista was now in order. The choices were a "greasy spoon" hamburger joint called"Spunkys" or a "healthy, comfort food " restaurant called "Mothers Bistro". Well, being the "high class elitists"that some people think we are, 85% of the Porsche participants chose the "greasy spoon". So much for stereo-types.

A right turn and a couple of shifts in gears later, the cars were right smack in the middle of the "Collegiate Peaks"highway. This stretch of road boasts an impressive array of 14,000 ft. peaks appropriately named Mt. Harvard,Mt. Yale, Mt. Columbia and Mt. Princeton. At the end of this road, was the town of Leadville at an altitude of10,200 ft. Everyone then gathered at the historic "Tabor Opera House" for a behind the scenes tour. Memberswatched a short video, listened to a brief history of the building and then jumped on stage, wondered through thedressing rooms and even saw the secret trap door that the Great Houdini used to perform his amazing escape acts. The Tabor Opera House is a true Colorado treasure.

The driving portion of the tour ended with a ride over the top of Freemont Pass (11,318 ft.), a cruise around LakeDillon and then into Keystone. Members then checked into their condos with underground parking and relaxedfor a couple of hours.

The Porsche crowd reconvened at the Wolf Rock Brewing Company for cocktails, appetizers and dinner. Theatmosphere was perfect as they sat around two large tables with a giant fireplace. People were laughing, talkingand eating some of the best Salmon and Steak Diane this side of the Rockies. Awards were then given out tothose who were able to complete a musical crossword puzzle featuring the classic songs of Frank Sinatra, TonyBennett, Dean Martin and Ella Fitzgerald. There was even a special "penmanship" award given to the entry withthe best handwriting. Needless to say, the beer, wine and laughs flowed well into the night.

The next morning, Porsche members were given the choice to play golf at the Ranch Course in Keystone, relaxand enjoy spa treatments at the Keystone Lodge or hook-up for a hike and historical tour of some of SummitCounty's mines and ghost towns.

To say that is was a great weekend, may be an understatement. So the next time a Porsche Tour is offered, comeout and join us. It may surprise you how much fun it can be!
