Everything’s here! There’s always something new in Lower Lonsdale! Shipbuilders’ Square, the new public plaza on the waterfront at the foot

of Lonsdale, is now open and available for major public events, and a new restaurant building there awaits a tenant. Construction has started on the multi-storey retail-residential building adjacent to Empire Theatre. The sales office is opening at the SW corner of Esplanade and Lonsdale for

The Versatile Building offering 62 new homes and 8 new commercial spaces at 3rd and Lonsdale. Studies continue on the development of a cultural precinct at the foot of Lonsdale and on what the City will do with its 5-acre site in the middle of The Pier development between the Pinnacle Hotel and the shore.Lower Lonsdale Business Association volunteers work very hard to

encourage a great mix of residential and commercial development in Lower Lonsdale, and to ensure that Lower Lonsdale continues in the direction of a vibrant, full-service neighbourhood rather than a static, aging one. When asked why residents prefer living in Lower Lonsdale, the usual response is “everything’s here!”.LLBA is working closely with the City of North Vancouver on 3 exciting new

Lower Lonsdale events for 2011 involving visiting navy vessels. In June, two Japanese ships with Canadian navy escort arrive at the Burrard Dry Dock Pier for tours, followed in July at the Party-at-the-Pier by 3 Canadian navy vessels and in August the Chilean navy’s tall-ship Esmeralda arrives with a Canadian navy escort.LLBA’s next free public festival is The Party-at-the-Pier July 16 and 17.

New at The Party this year will be a car-free day, and an extensive market including arts & crafts displays and sales, and the Canadian navy ships for tours. Last year’s Party-at-the-Pier drew an estimated 12,000 people. The sensational Sinfonia Orchestra concert is Saturday evening July 16.Lower Lonsdale continues to develop into the gem of the North Shore for

shopping, dining, relaxing, enjoying public events and the spectacular water and mountain views, and as the public transit hub for transportation across the North Shore and to & from Downtown Vancouver via the Seabus. To get involved with us, or for more information, visit our website at

WelcomeAs Mayor of the City of North Vancouver, it is my pleasure to invite you to experience our diverse Lower Lonsdale community. With so much to see and do, and the continued enhancement of the City’s waterfront, Lower Lonsdale is quickly becoming an even more sought after area to live and must-see destination for visitors.

Located on the City’s waterfront across from downtown Vancouver, Lower Lonsdale offers a wide variety of commercial and professional services, hotels, restaurants, shopping, art galleries, a performing arts theatre, recreation centre and parks. The area hosts annual community events including Party at the Pier and the Lower Lonsdale Fall Festival, and features popular attractions such as the Lonsdale Quay Public Market, Waterfront Park, Burrard Dry Dock Pier and the new Shipbuilders’ Square. The expanding North Shore Spirit Trail is a great feature of the City’s diverse waterfront, and is increasingly popular among residents and visitors to our community. The ongoing enhancement of the City’s waterfront continues to contribute to Lower Lonsdale’s reputation as a lively, walkable neighbourhood for all ages.

I hope that the time you spend in Lower Lonsdale gives you the chance to explore the many attractions, take in the breathtaking scenery and experience the warm hospitality of the Lower Lonsdale community.

A bicycle basket full of fresh fruit sits in the front window at Buddha-Full Juice & Smoothies.

The raw food offerings at this all-encompassing health bar in Lower Lon-sdale fuel cyclists as they pedal down by the pier or endorphin-pumped boxers from Griffins next door.

The “Tall Totem” – raw cocoa, banana, Buddha-blend Protein Powder, maca, goji berries and al-mond milk - is a delicious energy boost.

Business partners, best friends and die hard vegans Kyla Rawlyns and Geremie Voigt were tired of making the trek to down-town Vancouver to satisfy their herbivorous cravings.

They have lived in a beautiful heritage building in Lolo for eight years and - as of last September - now

own a thriving raw food bar right across the street.

“The closeness to nature and the city make it the perfect spot for us,” says Rawlyns. “We even named one of smoothies “The Lobo” - short for Lonsdale Bohemian.”

Buddha-Full’s organic smoothies, fresh juices, as well as vegan, raw and gluten-free desserts and meals, are cholk full of “superfood” powers.

There is also nourishment for the mind at Buddha-Full.

Rawlyns – a trained

vocalist with an opera background – teaches voice lessons at the café, after hours.

There are also open mike nights and a community piano that anyone can play at any time.

ON THE STREET INTERVIEWS

Whether they’ve lived in Lower Lonsdale all their lives, or have been lucky enough to more recently discover its charms, the people profiled in the next five pages agree about one thing – there’s no other place they’d rather be. As one contented resident says, “you feel like everybody you’re hanging out with is your neighbour.”

The Pier at the foot of Lonsdale Avenue extends 700 feet into Burrard Inlet. As well as serving private and commercial vessels, The Pier is meeting place

for people to stretch, stroll, mingle, play and celebrate.

a little sunshine, coffeeand raves for the library

David West enjoys a coffee on Sunday afternoon in front of the Café for Contemporary Art.

TAKE 5

There are few things better than sitting at the Café for Contemporary Art in the warm spring sunshine with a fresh coffee. David West moved into the neighbourhood from Marpole nine years ago and has never looked back.

“Where we live it’s about a 10-15 minute walk to shopping, the theatre, the library, lots of coffee places,” he says between sips. “It’s just vibrant. And we like the feeling of community here.”

David says the best part of the neighbourhood is how inclusive and welcoming it is. The Edmonton native describes it as having every amenity of a big city without being a big city, retaining a sense of community.

One of David’s favourite things to do

is walk from his home at St. Georges Avenue and West 6th Street to the library. Why the library?

“It’s very inclusive. When I was grow-ing up as a kid libraries were places where you were quiet. We’re very community, you see everybody there, kids, older people, plus an excellent selection of books. And it’s a very welcoming place. It feels good to go there.”

When David moved with his wife to the North Shore a decade ago it was just for employment.

“Now that we’re here we would never leave. We really enjoy it.”

TAKE 5

Hazel Black and her son Cooper on Esplanade

head for a walk down to the waterfront.

Hazel Black moved into the neighbourhood in October 2010 from Capilano Road and finds it wonderful to be closer to her father, with whom she goes for a family walk every Sunday.

“My favourite thing is the proximity to the quay,” she says. “My dad and I do this every Sunday. We walk down here rain or shine. So we love it. It is part of Cooper’s routine. We go down and do the park and the pier and

the quay and everything so it’s definitely my favourite.”

Her son Cooper loves going for these walks down to the pier, look-ing at the ships and tugboats and investigat-ing the train tracks. For a child it’s a real play-ground of discovery.

Hazel grew up near quiet Glen Eagles in West Vancouver, so she says coming from Capilano Road to Lower Lonsdale is right in the middle.

“It’s not as busy. When you do come down to the quay it’s not as much of a gong show. It’s a little more neigh-bourhood-like, a little more local feeling. Kind of feel like everybody you’re hanging out with is your neighbour.”

It’s quiet but there’s still always a vibe going on at Lower Lonsdale, she added.

fantastic weather & chocolate brownies calls for a smile

Marina Eva and Omar Sefian stroll by the IGA on Esplanade in Lower Lonsdale.

TAKE 5

Recent arrivals to the neighbour-hood, Omar Sefian and Marina Eva left the big city of Montreal for the quieter and slower pace of North Vancouver. Walking by the IGA on Esplanade, the two enjoy going for strolls by the wa-ter and heading down to the pier.

“It has a downtown feel to it,” says Omar, who takes the SeaBus into Vancouver where he works in marketing. But it’s a slower and more relaxed pace, he adds.

How are the two adjusting to life after seven months in North Vancouver?

“It’s amazing,” says Marina. “The weather is fantastic. The nature is just to die for. It’s so beauti-

ful. Every single day you go out and see the mountains and the ocean.”

The weather is a big topic for both, who are used to the wild temperature changes of Mon-treal. Omar says it was recently 20 degrees in Montreal but then it dropped to -5.

Their favourite place to visit is the Café for Contemporary Art, which Marina ensures she plugs on behalf of their chocolate brownies.

“He’s got something unique,” she says with a smile.

TAKE 5

Roger Smith sits in his favourite

place outside Starbucks

at West 3rd Street and

Lonsdale Avenue.

Roger Smith can be found most days at the Starbucks at West 3rd Street and Lonsdale Avenue just meeting people “from around the world.”

Born on East 10th Street, Roger has lived in North Vancouver for 65 years and says he wouldn’t want to be anywhere else.

“We have the Sea-to-Sky, we have everything we need all within 45 minutes of everything.”

Roger lives on East 2nd Street, and says he’s close to medical and dental clinics and pretty much anything else he needs to walk to.

“My favourite part of Lower Lon-

sdale is the waterfront, 3rd Street and from east to west, from the district to the city. I couldn’t ask for a better stretch of streets, businesses, more variety and nice people from around the world.”

Roger says his daughter, who lives in California, often drives up for a visit and remarks on how many different shades of green she can see.

“North Vancouver, as far as I’m concerned, is the prettiest city in the world,” Roger says with certainty.

ice cream with the family, hiking

and buskers…it rivals living in France

Tiff Daniels came to Lonsdale Quay with his dog Ruby to take in the beautiful weather and enjoy an ice cream treat.

TAKE 5

The Lonsdale Quay Public Market is always a popular weekend spot for tourists and locals alike. One 10-year local, Tiff Daniels, decided to come down with the family for some ice cream and take in the sounds of the buskers.

“I like coming down to the quay,” he said. “I like walking up and down Lonsdale itself. I like the parks as well in the North Shore.”

The Ontario native echoes the thoughts of others in describing Lower Lonsdale as being close to everything, whether it’s shopping in downtown Vancouver, hiking in Lynn Valley, or heading up the Sea-to-Sky for some weekend Whistler skiing.

Tiff also likes to take his Labrador retriever Ruby for walks all over North Vancouver, usually ending up in Brooksbank Park. It’s a lifestyle that

he’s very satisfied with.

“I’ve lived in Toronto, Oril-lia, in London, England, in France… I think this is one my favourite places I’ve ever lived in. That’s why I’m still here after 10 years.”

The meaning behind our motif: In 1996 the Squamish Nation presented Ratcliff & Company with a spectacu-lar wood carving created by internationally renowned artist Xwa-lack-tun (Rick Harry). His three meter-wide sculpture graces our reception area. Respect for all people, regardless of race or religion is a central theme for this work of art which forms the basis for our firm’s motif, shown at top in its colours. We are honoured that Xwa-lack-tun supports our use of his sculpture as our motif.

Working parents can rest assured that their kids will be well entertained this summer at John Braithwaite Com-munity Centre in Lower Lonsdale.

“JBCC is a great option for kids in the summer because we have a variety of camp programs and activities to choose from for different ages, and we have terrific camp leaders who are well qualified and who love to work with kids,” says JBCC manager, Trish Holme.

Interactive art camps at JBCC intro-duce kids to a variety of media.

In the second-floor art studio, preschoolers unleash their creativity through basic art skills; meanwhile, school-age children enjoy learning fine art techniques.

Dance is another popular art form at JBCC – held in the dance and fitness studio on the main floor.

Magic wands, fairy wings and scarves float around the studio when the Budding Ballerinas camp begins. For kids seeking a more upbeat tempo,

the Hip Hop Dance or Little Kids Musi-cal Theatre camp will do the trick.

Camp LoLo – for students entering Grades 1 to 7 – is an all-day adventure.

Kids will be kept busy with a variety of sports and games, arts and crafts, swimming, exploring local parks and even a trip to Grouse Mountain.

Then there’s exploration beyond the North Shore – from kayaking at Deer Lake to Science World to the water-slides at Splashdown Park.

The JBCC Youth Centre offers a wide range of programs for Lower Lonsdale youth ages 11 to 18 years old.

From games night to open gym activities to girls’ night, the staff-su-pervised Youth Centre offers a vibrant atmosphere that fosters friendship and athleticism among the youth of Lower Lonsdale.

Imagine picking up a gorgeous necklace from a display case - admiring it, perhaps even gushing over it - only to have the designer herself pop up

from behind the register to assist you.

That’s the concept behind the new artists’ collective at favourite gifts at Lonsdale Quay. Not the catching-people-off-guard part, but rather the creation of a retail environment where customers can interact with the designers behind the coveted jewelry.

Relishing in the freedom that comes with being self-employed was the expec-tation when favourite owner Carol Hyslop first opened her store in December of 2006. Reality didn’t quite meet up with that expectation, however.

“I ended up working seven days a week and lost sight of why I started this busi-ness in the first place,” says Hyslop of the

previous incarnation of the store.

Enter the artists’ collective this past April - a group of 16 local jewelry makers, fashion designers and painters, to name a few

genres, who started taking turns super-vising the store.

“So instead of having a traditional con-signment basis, the artists rent the space in the store and get the full proceeds [from the sale of their items],” explains Hyslop. “They also, in exchange, work one or two days a month in the store.”

The arrangement is also a bonus for favourite customers who enjoy meeting the artists.

And for Hyslop, her spare time is spent meeting with new artists and adding to the store’s eclectic collection of local, handcrafted gifts.

Tending to the jock straps and jerseys of sweaty, real life hockey players during the filming of “Tooth Fairy” - starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson - was the last straw. “It was a wonderful experi-ence, it just wasn’t for me,” says Lower Lonsdale fashion designer Gerry-Gail Endean of her decade-long stint in the Hollywood film industry. The postmortem of En-dean’s career was unique: known for writing a humour-ous twist into her costume design scheme. “I didn’t realize it was a skill,” she says. Community theatre was where Endean got her first laughs from the audience. She had designed the costumes for the Neil Simon play “The Last of the Red Hot Lovers” - which showed at Presentation House. It was the over-the-top fat suit and loud, plaid sports jacket that had the audience in stiches every night when the lead character walked out on stage. Endean’s sense of humour has carried over into her new vocation: creampuff by gg - a line of “girlie” boxer shorts. “I realized too many girls and women wear men’s boxer shorts to be comfy - even under wedding gowns,” she exclaims. “That’s just so

wrong. We’re half the globe and we need our own cute little item.” Flirty and practical, cream-puff bloomers are seamless and smooth under clothes.

They can be worn instead of a slip, as shorts, a bathing suit cover or as pretty lingerie. “I wanted something cute, comfy and pretty to wear under summer dresses to prevent the dreaded ‘thigh-rub’ I get with bare legs in the summer,” reveals Endean, of the inspiration behind cream-puffs. The pinup style, feminine lace detail and images of red roses that grace these undergarments evoke a playful sexiness that Endean promises men can’t resist. “Men tell me they think creampuffs are really ‘hot’,” she asserts. “They love the pin-up girl image and the idea of ‘something hidden’.” “Lil Bandaids” compliment the 1940s glam look and protect women from becom-

It’s no secret that Branwen Kemp draws inspiration from nature: the silhouette of a tree can be found throughout her collection of sterling silver and gold jewelry. She also gravitates towards the cool sleekness of metal. In 2008 Kemp attended Vancouver Metal Art School in Lower Lonsdale where she studied under Gerold Mueller, who is an alumnus of the one of the finest art and design schools in Europe. “I am inspired by the old and the new, from gothic archi-tecture to the clean lines of Bauhaus,” reveals Kemp. “It’s whatever I see at the moment that seduces me.”

Of course the idyllic water-front setting outside her home studio in Lower Lonsdale is also a source of inspiration. “I always make time for walks on the pier and hanging out with friends,” says Kemp. Reinventing timeless jewelry pieces is a facet of her craft that Kemp cherishes the most. “Many of my clients bring me old gold jewelry that they never wear from which I re-create something new and personal for them,” she explains. Favourite owner Carol Hyslop says she fell in love with Kemp’s work after being introduced through a mutual friend. “Her jewelry is a big seller at

the store,” praises Hyslop. Kemp’s high-end jewelry line is industrial, almost masculine looking; meanwhile, “Chicado-ra” is modern meets old world: the tips of tiny, ornate silver teaspoons figure prominently in this collection of pendants and earrings. She raves about the artists’ collective setup at Favourite. “It is a fantastic opportunity to meet clients and get valuable feedback,” says Kemp.“I believe that all designers at one time or another have had the fantasy of owning their own shop. This concept allows us to experience this but also allows us to have time in our studios to create.”

Working as an actress on the detective television shows 21 Jump Street and Da Vinci’s Inquest certainly brought out the drama in Wendy Van Riesen’s wearable art. “Pretty much, I was an actor for 25 years, taught my two boys to knit and sew and paint until I realized that is what I wanted to do,” says the Lower Lonsdale fashion designer. In 2001 - after winning a Jessie theatre award for best actress - Van Riesen exited the stage on a high note and enrolled in the textile program at Capilano University. “Resurrecting the fashion wasteland” is the mission statement of her label - Dahlia Drive. The wispy image of skel-eton - with a cadaver as the subject and hand drawn by Leonardo Da Vinci in the 15th Century - punctuate a soft, feminine slip that was once demure. “I am intrigued by how the laciness of slips is echoed in the lace-like quality of our bones and guts; intercon-nections, both functional and beautiful,” explains Van Riesen. “The bone images on slips were my first dresses, dyed in the dahlias from my

neighbour Gordon’s garden.” Van Riesen salvages sec-ondhand slips, shirts and fab-ric remnants, and reinvents them through screen printing and rusting techniques - creating original pieces of wearable art. She begins by sweeping dye across a piece of draft-ing paper. Next, she picks up a paintbrush and lets her muses guide the bristles across the page. There are five men that have made an impression on her creativity: Chagall, Picasso, Paul Klee, Warhol and Da Vinci. In the final stage of the layering process, she’ll screen an image over top of her handiwork- most likely an illustration by one of the aforementioned artists. The collaborative masterpiece is then attached to the fabric and set in with heat. As for why Van Riesen chose the environmentally friendly route: “Initially, I was interested in history and memory and lace and those things which had a past for me to build on,” she says. She delves through ware-houses where used material is a commodity trucked to all parts of the world.

Van Riesen grew up on Dahlia Drive in Los Angeles, California - hence the name of her clothing line. Her family eventually moved to Calgary where she studied acting at the University of Alberta. These days, home is with her husband on a boat in Mosquito Creek. She walks to her Lower Lonsdale studio with her dog Radar. She also longs for a garden of her own. “Our neighbours in Mos-quito Creek have their garden in a row boat floating by their boat,” she exclaims. “Life is good.”

En plein airOpus-hosted class captures the light

A raw canvas and a caddy of wa-tercolours is all an artist needs when the sun dances across the Vancouver harbourfront - from the vantage point of Lower Lonsdale.

In May, Opus Framing & Art Supplies hosted a Plein Air watercolour class - taught by local artist Alfonso Tejada - in that very neighbourhood.

The artists grabbed a canvas, parked themselves in front of old heritage buildings around 1st and Lonsdale and captured their surroundings with watercolours.

Located in the old North Vancou-ver post office building, Opus itself provided a source of inspiration for the painters.

Opus also offers monthly, free demos that provide an overview of products

and techniques; for more hands-on learning, there are paid classes avail-able.

“Our focus is providing artists a place to shop and learn,” says Opus North Vancouver store manager, Ann Mountney.

Opus’ products range from art-ist grade: Gamblin and Newton, to student grade: Buzz, Pebeo and Amsterdam. One of the store’s newest services is digital printing on canvas.

Many notable artists who live on the North Shore shop at Opus regularly, such as Gordon Smith, Kiff Holland, Dene Croft, Ross Penhall, Joan Skeet and many others, says Mountney.

On August 11 last year they were blessed with little Rose, named after her grandmother, so this summer the couple will celebrate four years of marriage and one year as parents.

Jack likes to take Rose to the John Braithwaite Community Centre where there’s a youth clinic, and is located conve-niently by the Jack & Lola baby store. He also likes to put her in the baby carrier and go for long

walks to Waterfront Park, out to the pier and over to Mosquito Creek Marina.

Although he is an Air Canada pilot, Jack flies a float plane four times a month to the island.

“For me to have breakfast, have a shower, get on the Sea-Bus, and get into the Twin Otter, I can be in downtown Victoria within the hour,” he said.

Lower Lonsdale Like a perfect gem, the setting of this neighbourhood is what makes it sparkle. With the North Shore mountains as a back-drop, the waterfront parks, piers and pathways lead us through a dynamic community with plenty to do and lots to see.

When fellow pilots Jack and Kyla Cassidy were married they moved into Lower Lonsdale and found a view they could appre-ciate: watching the sea planes take off from across the inlet.

“Lower Lonsdale gives the closeness of the community with-out the downtown hype,” Jack says. “If you do want to go down there – take the SeaBus and a cab and it costs you just $20.”

Art exhibits revolve at Verve

Artful Mane

Lower Lonsdale residents are cultured folk; they enjoy a good art exhibition with their haircut at Verve Hair Lounge. The name Verve means, literally, the essence of creativity. The hair and makeup artists at the Lonsdale Avenue and Second Street salon view their craft as an art form and are inspired by others’ handiwork. Photographs, sculptures and jewelry fashioned by upcoming, local and interna-tional artists grace the walls and counter-tops at Verve. “Creativity is not exclusive to one art form,” says Verve Hair Lounge owner Am-ber George. “The rotation of the art allows us to explore the various mediums and to interact with artists and therefore feed our creative goals and ideas.” The salon just wrapped a wearable art installation featuring the artist Terri Potratz and her fashion line inspired by isolation in the Great White North. Potratz’s “larry” – an oversized knits and accessories collection – was conceived in a one-room cabin in the desolate, wintery woods of Whitehorse, from a marriage of

urban fashion and frontier functionality. Verve Hair Lounge also prides itself on its eco-conscious status. Local eco-friendly fashion designer Nicole Bridger has commissioned Amber and her team for photo shoots. “[Eco-friendly hair styling] is certainly a niche market of mine to which I am dedi-cated,” George says. “We have worked since day one – including construction – on this culture within our salon.” Looking to add some artistic flair to your hair? Feather extensions are all the rage in LA and New York right now and are being sported by celebrities and fashionistas everywhere, reveals George. These iridescent peacock feathers or colourful rooster feathers add a semi-permanent hint of chic to any hairstyle. “Honestly, the feather extensions look so cool,” says George.

■ INTIMATE STRANGER

Presentation House Gal-lery is showing an exhibition of rare vintage photographs by Karlheinz Weinberger (1921-2006). Together with magazines and samples of vintage D.I.Y. clothing, they document a youth subcul-ture in Zurich, Switzerland that emerged in the after-math of the Second World War.

Living in Zurich, Wein-berger was a self-taught “amateur” photographer whose day job working in a factory allowed him to pur-sue photography seriously in his free time.

In the late 1940s Wein-berger began to publish his pictures for a gay magazine using the pseudonym of Jim. He later freelanced for a sports magazine, and over the years developed a loyal cult following.

Weinberger produced all the prints featured in this exhibition in his home darkroom. The photos have remained, until now, in

relatively obscurity. In 1958, Weinberger met and began photographing members of a small band of teenagers. In post-war Switzerland, these self-named “rebels” were comprised of working class boys and girls dissatisfied by the conservative climate of the day.

They adopted a gang identity modeled on American pop icons — with exaggerated hairdos and homemade clothing — in the manner of James Dean and Elvis Presley. Through Weinberger’s empathetic and obsessive gaze, the teens reveal a mix of defi-ance and vulnerability, like rebellious adolescents anywhere, and a complex expression of social identity.

This exhibition marks the first opportunity to see Karlheinz Weinberger’s compelling photographs in Canada.

“Intimate Stranger shows us the outrageous D.I.Y. aesthetic of teenagers in post-war Switzerland, and is a revelatory view of how American Popular culture invaded Europe after the Second World War,” says Presentation House direc-tor, Reid Shier.

In keeping with many of Presentation House Gal-lery’s unique projects, it cel-ebrates previously unknown and vernacular aspects of photographic history.

Intimate Strangers is curated by Gianni Jetzer – in collaboration with the Estate of Karlheinz Weinberger, Patrik Schedler, Zurich and Artist Resources Management, New York.

The exhibition is pro-duced by the Swiss Institute of New York and is ac-companied by a documen-tary film and a publication available at the Presentation House Gallery bookstore.

Intimate Stranger:runs from May 21 to July 17, 2011. Opening Reception: Friday, May 20, 8 pmExhibition tour with curator Gianni Jetzer at 7pmBoth events are free and open to the public.

On the corner of a bustling 3rd Street and Chesterfield lies a theatre that from the outside appears unassuming. Once inside, the acous-tics from the theatre productions and the raw, black and white visuals from another generation are overwhelming. This summer, the Presen-tation House Theatre and Gallery will fuel your senses.

■ GLEEFUL SUMMER CAMP

It’s no secret that Glee is one of the hottest show on TV at the moment. And now Presentation House Theatre is looking

for some students to help raise the roof this summer with the melodic sounds of spirited show tunes.

Serious up-and-coming young actors are invited to devel-op their talents in a week-long summer theatre intensive program being offered by Presentation House Theatre.

Award-winning director, playwright and actor James Fagan Tait and sought-after youth theatre instructor and director Patti Allan will host the Intensive. It fea-tures tailored playbuilding sessions for both nine- to

12-year-olds and 13- to 16-year-olds, culminating in a final performance.

“With the recent popularity of Glee and the renewed inter-est of young people in acting, PHT wants to make a deeper

connection with the youth in our own community and be a part of that excitement,” says Presentation House Theatre artistic di-

rector, Brenda Leadlay.

Patti Allan is a familiar face on the Canadian performing arts scene and has appeared in film, television and theatre productions through-

out the country. She teaches at SFU, directs for the Vancouver Youth Theatre and is an artist in residence for the Vancouver School Board.

James Fagan Tait has a long history of both performing in and directing productions in Canada, the UK and France. He is an in-demand actor and director in Vancouver, currently sharing his talent with numerous profes-sional and community-based companies.
