Before a word that begins with a vowel an is used not a Compare: A rabbit an elephant an orange an envelope an hour an MPWhen putting an before a vowel the pronunciation is important not the spelling. Use an before a vowel sound, even it is written as a consonant - an hour vs a university

Plural nouns (boys, cats, vegetables) and uncountable nouns (wool, furniture, petrol) can not be used with a/an. We use no article We need information and adviceShe wants new furniture for her room. We are having terrible weather She speaks excellent Arabic.
