About the degreeThe LLM (Master of Laws) in Legal Translation combines legal translation theory and practice with training in the law. The degree is awarded jointly through the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies (IALS) and the Institute of Modern Languages Research (IMLR) by the University of London.

Core and elective modules are selected according to your background and goals. The method of assessment is ongoing, through coursework and a fi nal dissertation.

The LLM in Legal Translation aims to:

The LLM in Legal Translation has been designed to meet the needs of professionals who might not be able to take a year o� work to pursue a master’s degree. Students do not need to be in London on a daily or even a weekly basis as the majority of the course is delivered by distance learning.

Structure

Taught jointly by the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies and the Institute of Modern Languages Research, the LLM in Legal Translation is delivered through blended learning, predominantly online but with week-long workshops at IALS’s location in central London, which will also be used for the Themes module (fi lmed for participants who cannot attend in person).

LLM content: six modules and dissertationStudents must complete six modules plus a 15,000-word dissertation. Each module counts for 10% of the fi nal grade and the

dissertation counts for 40% of the fi nal grade. Each module will be assessed by an essay or project.

Modules off ered by IALS are delivered via distance learning. Modules taught by IMLR are delivered by blended learning, which is a mixture of distance-learning delivery and a week-long workshop for each module. The workshop for the Translation Theory and Practice module takes place in the middle of the term, while the one for the Legal Translation Technology module takes place at the start of the term.

Teaching and learning

The majority of the course is taught online and in person by the institutes’ academic staff . The Themes module comprises a series of lectures by leading experts from research and practice.

Faculty members have published with leading academic presses and journals, have translated major government reports as well as national and European Union legislation, and have worked on prominent cross-border cases.

The University of London experience

As part of the School of Advanced Study (SAS), University of London, IALS students benefi t from a collaborative, interdisciplinary research environment, as well as a range of funding opportunities. SAS is a national research hub and IALS enjoys close links with its other members, including the Institute of Commonwealth Studies, the Institute of Modern Languages Research, and the Institute of Historical Research. Cross-institute collaboration is actively encouraged, making us an ideal location for interdisciplinary research.

IALS students join a community of more than 300 students in SAS. They are encouraged to participate in the wider activities of the University and are able to use the libraries of other colleges in addition to Senate House Library and IALS’s outstanding law library. The IALS library is one of the world’s great legal research libraries and is widely regarded as the UK’s national law library, attracting up to 700 visitors per day and 6,000 readers each year.

Entry requirements

The normal minimum entrance requirement is a First or Upper Second Class Honours degree from a university in the UK or an overseas qualifi cation of an equivalent standard. We will consider applications from candidates who do not meet the formal academic requirements but who off er alternative qualifi cations and/or relevant experience. Applicants are not required to have a law degree nor a professional qualifi cation in law.

English is the language of instruction and applicants are required to demonstrate an appropriate level of profi ciency.

Founded in 1947, it houses specialist research centres and innovative partnerships and is home to an active community of researchers, fellows, and postgraduate students.
