We are pleased to report on an exhilarating and transformative year at the Lloyd

Center for the Environment.

Thanks to overwhelming support for the Lloyd Center’s first-ever capital campaign,

Transforming a Legacy, a new Teaching Pavilion has been erected and construction

is underway on a new Welcome Center. We are pursuing Living Building Challengetm

(LBCtm) certification for that center, the most stringent program in the world for con-

struction of a ‘green building.’ Once completed, the new Welcome Center will be the

entry to our 82-acre campus. The community will be ‘welcomed’ through a building

that truly encapsulates our mission as well as the vision of Founder Karen G. Lloyd.

The ultimate success of the three million dollar Transforming a Legacy campaign

will enable the Center to expand its education, research, and outreach programs and

provide space for public programs in collaboration with its organizational partners.

Successful completion of the campaign is critical to support the mission of the Lloyd

Center and ensure the future of our programs. In 2016, the Research Department

worked to monitor threatened and endangered species throughout Massachusetts and

many of the New England states. The Education Department provided programs to

over 13,000 students from 50 different public and private schools across Massachusetts

and Rhode Island. The Outreach Department engaged with over 2,500 community

members through programs and events. Our member-supported Dartmouth,

Massachusetts Visitor Center/82-acre preserve attracted over 25,000 visitors.

Our organization continues to grow and provide valuable services to the community,

thanks to the reputation of excellence built by our tireless staff and board. We are

extremely grateful to the staff, board of directors, volunteers, and generous donors

who make all this possible.

The past third of a century has seen the Lloyd Center grow from a small environmental

“studies” organization to a dynamic membership-supported institution, whose research,

education and outreach services are increasingly sought by educators, government

agencies and citizens throughout New England.

Founded in 1978 and situated with its headquarters and spectacular nature preserve

overlooking the scenic Slocum River estuary in Dartmouth, the Lloyd Center has

achieved a well-earned reputation for excellence in environmental research, education,

and outreach. Through its innovative outreach programs, it has established itself as a

highly regarded leader in the ongoing effort to raise awareness of the area’s fragile

coastal resources and the importance of protecting them.

At its 82-acre nature preserve, comprising pristine salt marsh, maritime forest and

undisturbed wetlands, in one of the most unspoiled reaches of southeastern New

England, the Visitor Center is open from 10am to 4pm, Tuesday through Saturday

(plus Sundays, June-September). Here, aquarium exhibits offer close-up views of live

freshwater and saltwater species of fish and other marine organisms. The Visitor Center

is also home to a fascinating collection of live local reptiles. At the always-popular

touch-tank, youngsters learn the hands-on joy of socializing with gentle spider crabs,

elusive minnows, sea stars, whelks, hermit crabs, periwinkles and mussels.

The Lloyd Center’s majestic Red-shouldered Hawk continues to be the Center’s main

“Raptor-in-Residence”. Discovered permanently disabled in nearby woods, she was

rescued by Lloyd Center naturalists and nursed back to health. Although not here as

an “exhibit”, this magnificent bird of prey, having been painstakingly “socialized” by

members of the Center’s teaching staff, is now being introduced to thousands of wide-

eyed children, both in their classrooms and here at the Lloyd Center’s nature preserve.

To these eager learners, it has come to represent one of the true wonders of nature.

In March of 2013, the Center received its very own Eastern Screech Owl which is no

less wild, but partially impaired due to a retinal detachment in its left eye. The resident

raptors serve as educational tools for the biodiversity concept, which stresses the

interconnectedness and importance of all species around us, both large and small.

The top-floor Osprey Room Observatory, with its magnificent views of the Elizabeth

Islands and Buzzards Bay, has been designated by the Massachusetts Executive Office

of Environmental Affairs as one of the Commonwealth’s top-fifteen “Special Places”.

Through telescopes there, one can get a bird’s-eye view of formerly endangered

Ospreys, and their fledging chicks, nesting on platforms erected by members of the

Center’s research staff. Trails are open from dawn to dusk, seven days a week.

Since its founding, the Lloyd Center has focused its research activities on assessing

and documenting the distribution and ecology of the natural resources of southeastern

New England. The three biggest Lepidoptera projects were: (1) a survey of Lepidoptera

at Massachusetts Military Reservation Army National Guard Training Site (“Camp

Edwards”) in order to compare the current status of rare moth species with the results

of the 1996-1998 inventories conducted by the Lloyd Center, (2) a survey for moths

protected by the Massachusetts Endangered Species Act on a parcel of land on

Nantucket, and (3) a survey of 19 Atlantic white cedar swamps that are historical sites

for a rare butterfly, Hessel’s Hairstreak.

Collaborating with Tufts University, the Lloyd Center completed its 15th year as the

Buzzards Bay coordinator of the Seabird Stranding Network, documenting instances

of seabird mortality and live-bird activity on the western shoreline of Buzzards Bay.

Lloyd Center scientists conducted additional rare-species habitat assessments in

Martha’s Vineyard, Westport, and Cape Cod. The Center also gathered baseline data

for its Biodiversity Initiative, documenting the biota of southeastern Massachusetts.

The Center continued its collaboration with Martha’s Vineyard conservation agencies

and produced rare-habitat assessments for a growing number of private landowners.

In addition to its continuing work in protecting Piping Plovers and state-threatened

species, including Diamondback Terrapins on the Commonwealth’s Division of

Conservation and Recreation beaches in Bristol County, the Center completed its 31st

year of monitoring and protecting the federally-listed (“threatened”) Piping Plovers.

Research staff also participated in Bioblitz’s in Rhode Island, as well as the Rhode

Island East Bay and the Massachusetts Bristol County North American Butterfly

Association’s Fourth of July Butterfly Counts.

The Lloyd Center continues to provide an increasing number of unique hands-on

science programs for schoolchildren and adolescents in over 20 different New

England cities and towns, at levels ranging from kindergarten through college.

This past year, the Lloyd Center worked with over 40 elementary and middle schools

in the region, visiting a growing number of students on a regular basis to teach

interactive lessons on relevant and critically important environmental issues.

Three of the curriculum-based offerings, Feathery Focus (an ornithology program

specially created for the third-grade level), Turn-the-Tide (a program dealing with

the ecosystems of local estuaries, taught on the fifth-grade level), and the new

Climate Science Learning Project have proven to be especially effective. All educa-

tion programs are designed to meet the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks in

Science and Technology/Engineering and in History/Social Studies.

For children ages 5-15, the Center’s Education Department annually provides up to

15 distinct summer programs designed to help students develop a better understand-

ing of science and a deeper appreciation for the need to protect the fragile nature of

our coast. Every year, as many as 13,000 students benefit from the participation in

Lloyd Center education programs.

E N V I R O N M E N T A L O U T R E A C H

The Lloyd Center offers a wide variety of programs designed to engage the minds of

southeastern New England citizens of all ages, expanding their understanding of the

fragile nature of our coastal environment and the importance of working together to

protect it.

This past year, Lloyd Center Outreach staff interacted with over 2,400 people at various

community outreach events as well as popular Lloyd Center Programs such as canoe

tours, kayak trips, birthday parties, nature walks, shore-birding expeditions, seal and

whale watches, midnight “owl prowls”, butterfly and moth identification workshops,

and at our own community outreach events, such as ‘Koko the owl and friends’ animal

encounter.

Five miles of rustic hiking trails, open to the public every day from dawn to dusk on

the Lloyd Center’s Hardscrabble Nature Preserve, and a broad variety of live marine

animal exhibits, complemented by programs and seminars, continue to draw a growing

number of citizens of all ages to our Visitor Center. In addition, outreach collaboration

with partnering organizations continues to prove exceptionally effective in promoting

lifestyle changes aimed at a more sustainable use of natural resources. The Center’s

unique website provides a vast amount of environmental research and education

information for those who seek it electronically.

THE ART DRIVEOn the weekend of August 6th and 7th, tourists and art enthusiasts meandered through 15 scenic miles for the ART Drive, where 32 Dartmouth and Westport, Massa-chusetts artists welcomed them for the ninth open studio weekend.

For the past nine years, artists from the ART DRIVE have opened their studios to the public for a weekend in August, showcasing their artwork in unusual and dramatic studio settings. Visitors to the ART DRIVE enjoy a scenic drive through 15 picturesque miles, as they visit the studios of 34 local artists. The drive uniquely empha-sizes a consistently high level of professionalism and quality, and some of the area’s premier paint-ers, ceramic artists, photographers, jewelers, woodworkers, metal artists and other artists participate in this annual event.

“We are extremely grateful and honored for the support that the ART DRIVE artists have given to the Lloyd Center over the past nine years,” commented Lloyd Center Executive Director Rachel Stron-ach, “Their generous donations have played a key part in the Center’s ability to continually offer high-quality research, education and outreach programs to visitors and students of all ages.”

Throughout the past nine years, the ART DRIVE’s artists have donated almost $45,000 to the Lloyd Center.

“The Blues are Back” This year, the ART DRIVE artists affectionately proclaimed: “The Blues are Back!” as they brought back the ever popular blue fish… the species that was chosen by the artists in the first year the ART DRIVE created the fish. In addition to the ART DRIVE artists’ very gen-erous monetary donation, this year the Lloyd Center also received one of the famous blue fish. Artist Patricia Poineau donated “Before/After”, a two-sided pastel and de-coupage blue fish that will be on display in the Lloyd Center’s Visitor Center for years to come.

The Blues were auctioned on eBay with proceeds going to the artists, artist donations to the Lloyd Center for the Environment, and the Art Drive.

TRANSFORMING A LEGACY

t h e t r a n s f o r m a t i o n h a s b e g u n

Overlooking the water, nestled among trees and old stone walls, the Lloyd Center

for the Environment’s newly constructed Teaching Pavilion is the first visible sign

of the Transforming A Legacy capital campaign.

Reflecting the Lloyd Center’s ongoing commitment to environmental education,

this 600-square-foot, open-air structure provides a dedicated gathering place for

teaching and group discussions for the school groups who visit the Center, as well

as community visitors. In inclement weather, the Teaching Pavilion protects students

and visitors from the elements while allowing them to remain immersed, engaged,

and inspired by the natural landscape.

Careful thought was given to site determination and building materials for the new

structure. It is strategically located on the Hardscrabble Farm Loop Trail, near the

bird blind, and overlooking the Slocum River. Reinforcing the hands-on approach

to learning, students are totally immersed in the habitats they are learning about.

The design of the structure and wooden frame were chosen to blend into the natural

environment, as well as allowing expanded accessibility for visitors.

The Teaching Pavilion is the first of three exciting building projects at the Lloyd

Center. A new Welcome Center, designed to meet the stringent standards of the

Living Building ChallengeTM (www.living-future.org), and much needed renovations

to the existing Exploration Center (main building) are scheduled to begin shortly.

f o u n D e r ’ s V i s i o n b r e a K s n e W g r o u n D by stephen Demarest Rath

The founder of the Lloyd Center for the Environment, Karen Gallup Lloyd, liked to

discuss the deepest subjects over a cup of coffee with cream, a blend she insisted be

the “color of the Potomac.” She was fascinated with the idea of balance and was

drawn to a number of interests—Asian art, Native American mythology, psychology,

music, and environmentalism—in her pursuit of it.

When Mrs. Lloyd met Kathryn Duff in 1993, she must have known that her new

friend, a talented architect, would someday bring to life their shared vision of a

perfect balance between humans and nature. And, as of December 2016—when

bulldozers and backhoes broke into the earth at the Lloyd Center for the Environment

—new ground in environmental stewardship was broken, thanks largely to the work

of Ms. Duff, founder and lead architect at studio2sustain inc, New Bedford, MA.

Architectural plans for a new Welcome Center at the Lloyd Center embrace the

original vision of Mrs. Lloyd and adhere to the rigorous standards of the internationally

renowned Living Building Challenge™ (LBC™). Currently, there are only 11 buildings

in the world that are certified as conforming to the LBC standards.

In terms of a Welcome Center and the building site, Ms. Duff describes, “There are

20 imperatives that must be met, and they are dispersed among seven categories

referred to as petals. Like the petals of a flower, each petal becomes part of the

holistic function and beauty of a living building. You can’t remove one petal and

still maintain the balance of the whole system.”

1 . The Place petal addresses the civil engineering aspect of the building. Where

is the building located? How is it going to impact the site? As Ms. Duff explains,

“Place focuses on habitat exchange and the need for restoration where wildlife is

being dispersed or displaced.”

2 . The Water petal addresses the imperative of net positive water. “The bottom line,”

Duff continues, “is that you can’t tie into a utility water supply system, and you have

to generate your own water and disperse it on the site.” At the Lloyd Center, water

comes from a well supply. In addition, rain that runs off the building will be collected

in the ground within the footprint of the building, adding to the ground water and

therefore, the well. There has been soils testing and sufficient engineering to insure

that none of the water is thrown off-site. ‘Grey water’ (sink and water fountain run-off)

from within the building itself will go into a ‘treatment garden’ on site and will be

treated using plant material. Toilets will use a teaspoon of liquid foam instead of a

tank of water, thereby creating a composting system to liquefy the waste. Later, this

‘black water’ will get pumped into a tank and taken off-site for treatment by the Town

of Dartmouth.

3 . The Energy petal requires net positive energy and is achieved by allowing no fossil

fuel combustion in the building. Duff clarifies, “The Lloyd Center plans on doing this

with a large solar array on top of the building, which will generate energy and store it

in a Tesla Power Wall.” Because the building is designed to many of the standards of

the International Passive House requirements, it will have triple pane windows (R9),

as well as reclaimed insulation for the roof (R60), walls (R40), and floor (R30). This

makes it so energy efficient that the water for hand washing and drinking will

not freeze.

4 . The Health and Happiness petal takes the worldly view that unless structures

are built which are healthy, accessible to everyone, and generate a spirit of human

happiness, people will not be as content in them. So the LBC challenges the designer

and builder to construct a building that incorporates what is called ‘Biophilic Design,’

namely, that it celebrates the environment, embodies the environment, and most

importantly, is healthy to humans.” For instance, there is a requirement in the design

that every room must have natural light and natural ventilation. The design must also

conform to the human scale, “In this way humans feel connected with nature, and

since the Lloyd Center is all about the environment, it is a very easy requirement.”

5 . The Materials petal is described by Duff as, “Probably the hardest one to achieve.

All of the materials being used are vetted: there can’t be any Red List materials such

as PVC’s, and further, materials must not be transported from far away because we’re

trying to minimize the carbon footprint. We’re also trying to sustain local economies

by purchasing or using locally sourced materials. To that end, I would say that the

Welcome Center is doing a great job because we harvested a lot of oak trees from the

site. Some of the trees are being harvested into mulch for use on our trails, and there

is a mountain of it at the Lloyd Center; while hardwood trees that are straight, like

the oaks, are being harvested into planking to be used inside the building. And then,

the smaller tree limbs will be used to line the trails or left to decay to create wildlife

habitat sanctuaries.”

6 . The Equity petal is based on providing the benefits of a building to all who use

it. For example, if the building provides sunlight and ventilation, it has to provide

it to all the people using the building, thereby creating a sense of equitability and

accessibility. In addition, LBC certification requires that materials be purchased from

organizations certified as JUST Organizations, meaning that they have not been found

guilty of breaking child labor laws, illegal trafficking of materials, or violation of

international procurement practices.

7 . The Beauty petal requires that there are two pieces: the building has to be

beautiful, and it has to be inspired. It has to inspire others to learn more about the

environment and become part of a community. Duff recounts, “One of the earliest

conversations we had with the Lloyd Center Staff and the Design Team involved kids

in an education program who had an ‘aha moment’ when they arrived and became

immersed in the forest floor where the building site is located. They learned how the

forest floor changes and evolves with the seasons in New England: the beauty of the

leafing out in the spring and the articulating of leaves in autumn, which fall to the

ground and contribute to the decomposed matter and DNA of the forest floor. This

is what the students would then dig up, research, and assess. And out of that early

conversation came this beautiful image of the roof as this articulating leaf falling from

the tree toward the forest floor. And that essentially captures the idea of the building.

From there we worked on articulating the roof and orienting the building to meet the

other petals. Wherever you stand outside the Welcome Center, you will always be

cognizant of this oversized roof, which is over articulated at the edges and resembles

the shape of a super-sized leaf; and inside the Center we have patterned that roofline

in order that when you look up, you’ll see all the different patterns of cedar planks

that create beautiful linear patterns, like the underside of a leaf. When you look

down, you will see leaf patterns in the floor. So, in our design, we never lost the idea

of this articulating leaf falling down to the forest floor.”

“Who has been involved?” I ask. Duff smiles: “We have students involved in both the

design and, of course, the building of it; and the Lloyd Center Staff has been integral

to the whole effort and process from the beginning. We’ve also had two volunteer

students from Harvard: one who is in the Sustainability Extension Program, and the

other is an undergraduate at Harvard; they, too, have been involved in the project

from the beginning. I say to all of them: You are creating a piece of environmental

sustainability. You are designing it, you’re building it, you’re going to help it grow,

you’re going to help it function, and you are going to use it to teach others. This is

the result of your efforts.”

She finishes with these words:

“For the people who come to the Welcome Center for the first time to just pop in,

grab a trail map, or use the restroom, they will have an opportunity to experience

this building, and, in the process, learn about what makes it a truly sustainable, living

building. For example, we’re going to have our Tesla Power Wall exposed, so you

will see what a battery looks like that stores energy coming from the solar panels.

Now won’t it be great to have an exhibit where you can actually see energy being

generated in real time? The idea is that we want to plant a seed so visitors keep

coming back to learn more about the building and engage in other programs at the

Lloyd Center. It will continue to evolve in their memory, their curiosity, and their

knowledge about a living building. We see this building as an inviting place.

Hence, it is the Welcome Center.”
