Principal’s Message M Blais: Welcome back to school Falcons! The doors of École Lloyd George are once again open to our fabulous students who are eager to grow and learn, with the guidance of our committed staff and you, their parents and guardians. We would like to say a big thank you to our custodial staff for doing a wonderful job in getting our building ready over the summer for our staff and students. Thanks to the teachers’ classroom preparations, the office work of Mrs. Struss, and the summer cleaning we are ready for a very productive year ahead. This year, school will begin at 8:35 am and end at 2:35 pm. Student pick up and drop off is on Dominion Street and students enter through the back doors between 8:20 and 8:35 am. A staff member is on duty until 2:50 pm to supervise bus students. Parents, please plan meeting points with your child outside of the school on the playground, as our hallways are not big enough to accommodate all of our students and their parents. Please note that if you are dropping your child off before 8:20 or picking them up after 2:50, you are choosing to leave your child unsupervised, as there is no supervision at those times. As always, we believe that communication between home and school is essential in order for parents to stay informed of their children's progress as well as events and functions that are occurring at school. A school newsletter will be emailed home from the office each month. Please be sure to read this information as its purpose is to keep you informed and up-to-date. You are also encouraged to view our school website, as it will be regularly updated with newsletters, calendars, upcoming information and more throughout the year. We are looking forward to a rewarding and enjoyable year as we strive to be a caring community working together to SOAR toward our future. School Website Please access the Lloyd George website at the following address: lg.sd73.bc.ca. Please use this website for updates and school related information. You can also access PAC information from this website. Student Drop-off and Pick-up Please do not drop off or pick up your children on Pine Street. This is unsafe and we would ask that you respect the safety of all Lloyd George students by parking and then having your child exit or enter your vehicle. Parents/Guardians are asked to use Dominion St. or other side streets for dropping off and picking up (not Pine St.) We appreciate your attention to this matter. Please be reminded that the bus parking zone is designated on Pine Street. Personal Electronic Devices Our school expectation is that students do not use electronic devices during the day. If your child needs to make an emergency phone call, we would prefer that they request to use the school phone. We also expect that students do not use cell phones in our school lobby and hallways before and after school. If a student is using a cell phone, he/she will be asked to put it away. Classroom teachers will communicate their expectations to students for use of electronic devices during class time.

Front Lobby Recently, many students have been loitering in our lobby after school and the noise has made it difficult for our staff to work effectively. Please discuss this with your child, as it is an issue that we will be addressing daily. We would like students to wait outside after school. Our lobby area is for deliveries, special guests and a place for individuals to wait that have a scheduled appointment.

Picture Day Please note that both class and individual photos will be taken on two dates. Primary photos will be taken on Sept. 26th and Intermediate photos will be taken on Sept. 27th.

School Supply Fees School supply forms will be distributed soon. Ordering supplies through the school saves time, money and allows for consistency of supplies in the classroom.

Newsletters Monthly newsletters will be posted to the website the first Thursday of each month. They will also be emailed to all families. Please call the office if you are not receiving the school emails. Weekly updates will also be emailed highlighting the week ahead at Lloyd George.

Medical Alert Parents/Guardians of students with potentially life-threatening health conditions or allergies are requested to sign the necessary forms at the school office. These forms must be updated at the beginning of each school year.

School Forms Please note that various forms will be sent home over the next few weeks. It is important that you review these forms and send them back to the school as soon as possible. Please ensure that you provide your current address, telephone and email information on your child’s verification form. Thank you in advance for your help! School Yearbook All students will be included in the school yearbook unless otherwise noted. If you do not wish for your child to be in the school yearbook please email Mme Edstrom indicating your preference [email protected]

PBIS School Lloyd George is a PBIS (Positive Behaviour Intervention Systems) school. The purpose of PBIS is to provide students with clear expectations about the expected behaviour in our school. The focus of PBIS is also to provide students with positive feedback when they are following school expectations successfully. Please find our school values posted in this newsletter. This fall, classroom teachers will develop specific expectations with their classes based on these values. These expectations will be shared with parents once they are developed. There are times when students have difficulty meeting behaviour expectations and may be referred to our school office for further assistance. This may occur when interventions in the classroom are unsuccessful, or when a behaviour is unsafe or extreme in nature. Incidents at recess and lunch will also be handled at the school office. Depending on the situation, students may receive one of the following interventions during an office referral:

1. Action Plan – students will review the incident and make a plan to improve their behaviour.

2. Minor Behaviour Incident Slip – this form will outline the incident and consequence. It will be sent home. This form can be completed by all staff members.

3. Major Behaviour Incident Slip – this form will outline an incident and consequence. These forms are completed by M Blais or Mme Edstrom. These forms are sent home and are accompanied by a phone call to parents.

Fire and Lockdown Drills We are required to have 6 fire drills and 2 lockdown drills per year. These routines are not meant to alarm our students, but rather provide them with a familiar plan of action in case of emergency. We will also have an earthquake drill this fall. Please see the dates below outlining our plan for these drills:

Fire Drills: September 6th, 18th and Oct. 11th Lockdown Drill: October 1st Earth Quake Drill: October 18th

Please note that these dates are tentative and may be

subject to change

Lunch Program Once again, lunch orders will be available to all students. Order forms can be found on the website or picked up at the school office. September orders are due Monday, Sept. 9th and will begin on Sept 16th .

Cross Country Running Our Cross Country Team will spring into action later into September. Team members will receive specific details after they sign-up to participate. Please make note that the running events are after school and require parent drivers. Volleyball

Volleyball season begins in October. We are seeking volunteer coaches for the following teams: Grade 5, 6 and 7 boys and girls. Please contact the school office if you are

interested in coaching one of these teams. Noon Hour Supervisors Lloyd George employs four supervisors for our daily lunch hour. We are always looking for additional supervisors to replace our permanent supervisors when they are absent. Please email Mme Edstrom if you are interested [email protected]. Come Read with Me Our “Come Read with Me” event will take place on Sept. 26th at 8:20 am-10:00 am. All Grade 1 parents will receive information directly from their child’s teachers. The event will take place in our school library. Volunteer Driver Forms Please note that these forms are to be updated annually. Please visit the school office with your driver's license and insurance paperwork prior to volunteering to drive for school events. Term Overviews and Report Cards Lloyd George students will receive three report cards throughout the school year. Classroom teachers will also provide term overviews three times per year. Term 1 Dec. 13th Term 2 March 12th Term 3 June 25th Parent Teacher Interview - one early dismissal Oct 23rd (classroom teachers will arrange meetings directly with parents) Fruit and Vegetable Program 2019/2020 Once again, Lloyd George will be participating in the Fruit and Vegetable Program sponsored by Agriculture BC. Several times per month, students are provided with a fruit or vegetable to eat and enjoy. Students in K-5 also receive milk through this program. Reverse permission forms will be sent home. Return your form only if you do not want your child to participate or to make note of allergies.

PAC News The Back to School Barbecue is on Friday, September 20 at 4:30 pm. In addition to the BBQ, there are bouncy castles on the field - loads of fun! Many volunteers are needed for set up and take down - please let us know if you can help. Please submit your order on the Hot Lunch Website by Sunday, September 8, and bring a nut-free potluck dish to share, in addition to plates and cutlery for your family. Limited quantities of food will be available for purchase at the BBQ; we encourage you to order ahead of time to avoid disappointment. We reset the Hot Lunch system every year, so all users have to re-create their account. Log on to lloydgeorge.hotlunches.net, click "Register", and the school access code is LGHL. Follow the prompts to add each student that attends the school. PLEASE ADD EACH OF YOUR CHILDREN UNDER THE PROFILE TAB, OR THEY WILL NOT BE ON THE CLASS LIST. Detailed instructions on how to set up are found on the School web page, in the Parent Student Tab under Meals. September Hot Lunches are on the Hot Lunches website: September 13 is Subway; orders are due on Friday, September 6. September 27 is Senor Froggy (Mexican) and orders are due on Friday, September 20. October to December lunch menus will be posted soon! PAC meetings are held on the third Monday of every month at 8:45 am in the staff room. The first meeting is on Monday, September 16, and is also our AGM, where we vote in the Executive. All are welcome to attend meetings, and minutes are posted on the Lloyd George webpage. This year, we are looking for a Secretary to

record minutes at meetings, and a District PAC rep to

inform us on District PAC meetings. If this is something

that you can help with, please let us know! It is highly recommended that clothing, shoes, lunch containers and other items students bring to school are labelled. If there is a name on a lost item, it will be returned. Mabels Labels REALLY stick, and have a wonderful program where profits are shared with the Lloyd George PAC. When ordering Mabels Labels, please go to mabelslabels.ca, click "Support a Fundraiser" on the top right hand side and select LLOYD GEORGE ELEMENTARY PAC (KAMLOOPS). It's that easy, and you don't have to be a student at Lloyd George to support us, so tell your family and friends! If you are not receiving emails from the PAC, please email [email protected] and we will add you.

Kids Plus Accident Insurance Program

Thank you for your support of the Kids Plus™ Accident Insurance program. It has been a long and rewarding partnership and is truly appreciated. Over the years, Kids Plus™ has helped many families, providing much needed reimbursements for out-of-pocket costs. We appreciate your support and we are truly grateful for the part you have played. We have big news: the Kids Plus™ Accident Insurance school distribution program is moving online! All partner school boards can now access kidsplus.ca/resources for information about Kids Plus™ which they can use on their respective websites, e-newsletters and social media. The main website at kidsplus.ca will continue to be available for parents to purchase coverage, access claims forms and full plan information online. Additionally, for 2018 we’ve decided to take our mission to be green one step further by discontinuing distribution of all Kids Plus™ Notices (Brochures) to reduce our overall paper use. These changes are part of our ongoing commitment to continuously provide superior and meaningful service to our partners and clients while reducing our impact on the environment. Effective this September 1st, there will be some changes to our Kids Plus™ Accident Insurance policy that will impact our Active Plan holders. Permanent Total Disability coverage will be reduced from $360,000 to $100,000 and Dismemberment or Total & Permanent Loss of Use from $200,000 to $100,000. These changes allow us to continue to offer the benefits families use most, such as dental treatment and eyewear, with no increase in premiums. If you have any questions or would like to learn more about our new promotional landing page, our Kids Plus™ Client Service Specialists would be happy to assist you. You may contact us toll-free at 1-800-556-7411 or email [email protected].

Fair Notice for Students – March 2019

Dear Students:

School District No. 73 has a policy in place that requires principals to activate a multidisciplinary “threat assessment” protocol in all cases of students making

significant threats to harm themselves or others. The procedure is available on the website at www.sd73.bc.ca

What behaviours initiate a student threat assessment?

A student threat assessment will be initiated when behaviours include but are not limited to: serious violence or violence with intent to harm or kill, verbal/written threats to harm/kill, Internet website/MSN threats to harm/kill, possession of weapons (including replicas), bomb threats and fire setting.

Duty to report In order to keep school communities safe and caring staff, parents/guardians/caregivers, students and community members must report all threat-related behaviours to the school principal.

What is a threat? A threat is an expression of intent to do harm or act out violently against someone or something. Threats may be verbal, written, drawn, posted on the Internet or made by gesture. Threats must be taken seriously, investigated and responded to.

What is a Site-Specific Threat Assessment Team? The school has a site-specific threat assessment team that includes the principal(s), counsellor(s), teachers and a member of the police.

The purposes of a student threat assessment are:

To ensure the safety of students, staff, parents and others

To ensure a full understanding of the context of the threat

To understand factors contributing to the threat makers’ behaviour

To be proactive in developing an intervention plan that addresses the emotional and physical safety of the threat maker

To promote the emotional and physical safety of all

What happens in a student threat assessment?

All threat making behaviour by a student shall be reported to the Principal who will activate the protocol for the initial response. Once the team has been activated, interviews may be held with the student(s), the threat maker, parents and staff to determine the level of risk and develop an appropriate response to the incident. Intervention plans will be developed and shared with parents, staff and students as required.

Can I refuse to participate in a threat assessment process? It is important for all parties to engage in the process. However, if for some reason there is a reluctance to participate in the process by the threat maker or parent / guardian, the threat assessment process will continue in order to promote a safe and caring learning environment.

Collection Notice

The School District is subject to personal information privacy laws, and will undertake the collection of this information in compliance with the requirements of such laws; including by limiting collection to information that is relevant and necessary to address a risk or threat and by ensuring that information is collected from online open source sites. The School District will not collect information as part of a threat assessment unless there is reason to believe that a risk exists. Information collected as part of a threat assessment may be provided to law enforcement authorities in appropriate circumstances. Sincerely,

Alison Sidow

Superintendent of Schools
