Principal’s Message
With December already upon us, students have started
the countdown to Christmas. With all the Christmas
festivities, I would like to take this time to remind
parents that many classrooms in our school do not
allow sharing food. Not sharing food includes bringing
timbits, cookies, cake or baked goods for the whole
class. We know that the intentions, when bringing these
goodies to the class, is well intentioned, but we have to
stop this practice in many classes due to the amount of
food allergies and especially the severity of those
allergies. The safety of our students is our number one
priority and students with allergies are at risk when
food is shared at school. Please check with your child's
teacher before sending food to school and remember
that nobody will get hurt from not having some treats
but someone could get hurt by eating one.
Mr. Hogeveen, our teachers and students are working
hard to get ready for our Christmas Concert that will
take place on Monday, December 17 at 6:30 pm at the
Sagebrush Theatre. Mr. Hogeveen is also busy working
with our grade 6-7 students on our Band Christmas
Concert. The Band Concert will take place Thursday,
December 13 at 6:30 pm in the gym. These events take
a tremendous amount of work and I would like to thank
Mr. Hogeveen and all our classroom teachers for their
hard work to produce such quality concerts.
Finally, volleyball just wrapped up and we would like to
congratulate all our students who participated this year.
Basketball season will start on January 19. We are
looking for coaches for grade 6 boys, grade 6 girls, grade
5 girls and grade 4 mixed teams. If you are interested
please email me at [email protected].
I would like to wish everybody a Merry and safe
Christmas!
Vice Principal’s Message
Thank you to our PAC this month for purchasing two
IPADs for our music program, funding our “You Can
Count on Me” program and for donating $250 towards
our McQueen Lake Basket fundraiser. Without your
help, our school would be a very different place. I would
also like to extend gratitude to our volleyball coaches
and players. Because of parent coaching, we have been
fortunate to have eight volleyball teams in all three
tiers. What a great season of learning, challenge and
sportsmanship! Thanks also to our students who have
helped with scorekeeping. Students in grades 1-7
enjoyed a presentation from “Tornado Chris” on Nov.
22nd. Ask your child what they learned about extreme
weather patterns. Students will receive their report
cards on December 14th. I hope that parents will take
the time to read through the reports together with their
children. This exercise will often lead to meaningful
dialogue about your child’s learning and school
experience. Through conversation, you can help your
child to set learning goals for himself/herself. I would
like to wish all of our Lloyd George families a Merry
Christmas and a Happy New Year! Enjoy your Winter
Break and we will see you in January!

Basketball League
Students in grades 4-7 interested in

commence in mid- January. We are
looking for individuals who would be
able to referee games on Tuesdays,
Wednesdays and/or Thursdays. If there are any parents
or high school students who are interested in doing so
please contact our school office. Please note that
referees are paid for their services.
We are also looking for coaches for basketball. Please
contact Mr. Blais if you are able to coach a team.
Winter Expectations
Please review the expectations below. Winter can be a
challenging time for safe play and organization of winter
gear. These expectations are designed to help ease the
challenges that winter weather can
bring.
• Snow stays on the ground
(no snow balls or
throwing snow into air)
• Building structures with snow is permitted
• Do not break another person’s snow structure
• Crazy Carpet sliding is only permitted with your
class (not at recess or lunch breaks), classroom
teachers can set the specific rules with their classes
• Crazy Carpets are hung on the hooks near Mme
Harmatuk’s classroom
• Wipe your feet before entering the building and
then place your boots on the designated racks
• Dress appropriately for the weather
• Place/hang clothing in your locker (not on floor)
• Stay off of snow hills
• Do not slide on hill from upper playground
Students are expected to follow these rules after school
as well. We have many students on the grounds after
the bell and in an effort to ensure safety and continuity;
students are expected to respect these expectations.
We recognize that weekends and evenings are a
different context and more flexibility at these times is
understood.

Library News
Kindergarten parents and grandparents were invited to
the "You Can Count On Me" workshop that focussed on
improving numeracy skills. Doffy Bourbonnais explored
the various mathematical strands through many games.
Key suggestions were:
• avoid saying "it's wrong" but rather ask
if it makes sense and suggest counting
it again
• find numbers around you - addresses,
phone numbers, time…
• estimate when at the store
• avoid letting your child win all of the time... it is a
hard lesson to learn in Kindergarten
• and most importantly - make it FUN!
Thank you to everyone who ordered Purdy’s
Chocolates. Money raised will be used to purchase book
prizes for the “Kiwanis Super Lecteur” program. Thank
you for supporting literacy at Lloyd George!
Student Leadership News

EDUCATION TOPIC
Financial Literacy - Principal Susie Mabee and Teacher Kim Edstrom, along with students Zane Philcox (Grade 3), Ruby Conklin (Grade 4), Kieran Fellenz (Grade 6), Spenser McCue and Shayla Chadwick (Grade 7) presented how Westmount Elementary tackled financial literacy head on. With the support of its recent Inquiry and Innovation funding grant from the Board of Education they focused on pedagogy, developing community connections, real life situations and celebrated their learning with a Financial Literacy Fair.
Leadership Development Program - Certificates were presented to the most recent cohort of educators who
successfully completed their Leadership Development Program (LDP). Congratulations to Domenic Comita, Cecile McVittie, Mike Koppes, Jodi Oetter, Dave Conroy, Kim Edstrom, Lana Blais, Steve Scott and Tessica Watson. The program began in 1967 as an on the job training program for future principals at the Centre for Study for School Administration at UBC. The two-year program continues to include hands on school leadership experience, presentations to district leadership staff and courses at TRU. This is the longest established school leadership program in the province. An estimated 82 per cent of SD73 principals have completed the program.
SUPERINTENDENTS REPORT

SECRETARY-TREASURER REPORT
Valleyview Secondary Expansion Update - Art McDonald
Director Facilities and Transportation submitted the Project Definition Report (PDR) to the Ministry of Education. Further to the submission, the Ministry has requested information on the District’s Local Capital Reserve fund balance and the associated budget for the next two years (2018-2019 and 2019-2020). The Ministry may request further information or clarification on items in the PDR over the next several months. Once the Ministry is satisfied that the business case for the expansion has been substantiated, the Ministry will seek final funding approval. If approved the project would then proceed to the design phase.
Slash to a Dash - An Order in Council by the Lieutenant Governor has approved the slash to be changed to a dash in the official name of the School District No. 73 (Kamloops-Thompson). The name change will be gradually phased in with the normal replacement of signage and collateral.
