Mission StatementThe Mission of the Lawrence Memorial Hospital Endowment Association is to secure private gifts and financial support for medical education, research, land acquisition, and unique hospital programs; to guide the investment and disbursement of those funds for the support of Lawrence Memorial Hospital; and to help sustain Lawrence Memorial Hospital as a community hospital. The Association also provides opportunities for people to share in the mission of the hospital through philanthropy.
Although the Association is incorporated as a separate organization, and is not involved in the administration or operation of the hospital, all Association policies are guided by the mission of the hospital, and the hospital’s dedication to excellence in health care for all people.
Vision StatementTo financially support the mission of Lawrence Memorial Hospital and enhance the quality of life and health for all citizens in the areas that we serve.
Roots can extend up to three times the height of the tree.
1
It has been my privilege to serve as president of the LMH Endowment Association for the past year. As a physician for 33 years and a former member of the LMH Board of Trustees, I was very familiar with Lawrence Memorial Hospital. But when I joined the LMH Endowment Board of Directors, I got to see it all from a different perspective. I got to see how the community sees and supports their community hospital. It is truly amazing how much this community — individuals, civic organizations, businesses, school children, everyone — supports Lawrence Memorial Hospital.
2010 was an outstanding year for LMH Endowment Association. We were able to give Lawrence Memorial Hospital more than $738,845 in philanthropic support, a 93% increase over 2009. We had a record number of participants in our Penny Jones Golf Tournament, all three “small town BIG CAUSE” 5K run/walks and the Stepping Out Against Breast Cancer dance. We received a $100,000 grant from The Sunderland Foundation to underwrite the relocation of the GI lab and pain clinic from LMH South back to the Maine Street campus.
Also, in 2010, I was very proud to oversee the implementation of our five-year strategic plan, while looking out toward 2020. Some of our goals include: • increasingthegeneralendowmentfundto$10million;• increasingthetotalnumberofgiftseachyear(our2010goalwas1,417...werealized2,593!);and• increasingthetotalnumberofdonorseachyear(our2010goalwas1,021...therewereactually1,935!)
2011 and beyond will certainly present us with challenges. The upcoming changes from health care reform and a slowly rebounding economy will test us to think and do things differently. But I am confident that LMH and LMHEA will be able to change and adapt. To quote the great Vince Lombardi, “People who work together will win, whether it be against complex football defenses, or the problems of modern society.”
Sincerely,
Richard Orchard, MD 2010 LMHEA Board of Directors President

• LMHreleasedacommunitybenefitreportdetailing the $7.2 million in contributions of time and resources that LMH and its employees gave back to the community in 2009. Community benefits are defined as programs or activities that address identified community needs and meet at least one of these objectives: improve access to health services, enhance community health, advance medical knowledge, and demonstrate charitable purpose.
• TheCommunityCareNavigatorProgram began. Funded by the LMH Endowment Association, the program follows up with vulnerable patients at risk for complications after going home from the hospital. In the first five months of the program, the readmission rate of the patients contacted by the community care navigator was just 6%, compared with the expected re-admission rate of nearly 20%.

• Moody’sInvestorsService, oneofthecountry’stopcredit rating agencies, upgraded Lawrence Memorial Hospital’s long-term bond rating from A3 to A2. This was especially noteworthy because Moody’s reported increasing numbers of downgrades for not-for-profit healthcare providers in the second quarter of 2010. In issuing the report, Moody’s noted that LMH’s strengths are its dominant market position in a favorable service area and a track record of strong operating results with 10 years of increasing cash flow growth.
• LMHacquiredtheSecureDigital ForensicImaging(SDFI)systemto document evidence in abuse cases, thanks to donations from the Douglas County District Attorney’s office, the Douglas County Community Foundation, and a private donor, Audrey Bishop. Donors like you make LMH a true community hospital. Your support makes it possible for LMH to give a human touch while providing state-of-the-art medical care. Whether we are caring for you, your family, your friends, or someone you have yet to meet, your dollars are an integral part of that care. Below is a list of just some of the equipment and services that were made possible in 2010 because of philanthropic support. • Mammograms for uninsured men and women to
ensure early breast cancer detection.• Mammography flexi pads to make mammograms
more comfortable for patients.• Rehabilitation exercise equipment to ensure the
continued health of cardiac patients.• A nuclear medicine camera and a stress test treadmill
to provide the most accurate views of a patient’s cardiovascular system and detect any issues.
• Angio-jet to remove blood clots in arteries and veins. • SDFI system to allow trained LMH staff to document
and gather evidence in cases of abuse. • Renovation of the Segebrecht Room so that families
of newborns needing special care have a place to stay. • A tractor, funded by LMH Auxiliary, to help us remove
snow promptly, providing a clear path for patients and visitors to safely enter LMH.
• Room renovation in the palliative care unit, funded by LMH Auxiliary, so that patients and family members have a warm, comforting place to spend those precious days.
• Prescriptions and durable medical equipment (walkers, wheelchairs, etc.) for patients who cannot afford them.
• Portable AED machines to provide quick and comprehensive care for patients experiencing cardiac issues anywhere on the hospital grounds.
• Newspapers for patients so they can keep current on the events in Lawrence and around the world during their stay.
• Televisions for patient rooms so that patients are able to more easily pass the time during their stay at LMH.
• Special programs like CLIMB (Children’s Lives Include Moments of Bravery), a support group for children whose parents or grandparents are presently battling cancer.
• Quilts, hats, and scarves, made by individuals, church groups, Girl Scout troops, and others, to provide warmth and comfort to oncology, pediatric, and other patients.
• Exercise equipment, art, durable medical equipment, DVDs, game systems, and other items for patients.
• Scholarships for staff to continue their education and provide the most up-to-date care to LMH patients.
Below are just a few of our anticipated needs in 2011:• Birthing rockers to be used when moms are in labor.• Blood pressure monitors for cardiac patients to use
in their homes.• Funding for Comfort Carts that provide food and other
personal care items for family members of hospice or palliative care patients.
• Equipment such as patient beds, surgical tables and equipment, and a blood bank freezer.
• Artwork to create a vibrant and healing environment. • For better viewing of microorganisms, an
oil immersion microscope lens.
