Community programmecuts affecting serviceIN THE wake of a statementby Irish Rural Link that com-munity projects such asmeals on wheels, the ruraltransport scheme, visiting theelderly and home insulationfor older people are comingunder threat of closure due toGovernment cuts, Fine GaelSpokesperson for Older Citi-zens, Catherine Byrne TD hascalled on the Governmentparties to consider wheretheir priorities lie.

“The Community Serv-ices programme is designed

to address locally identifiedgaps in the provision of serv-ices and to exploit resourceswhich are available at locallevel. What the present Gov-ernment is doing is killing alllocal initiatives and forcingcommunities to turn valuableresources and energies tofund raising. “In the past theprogramme has providedlong term employment op-portunities for people whohave been previously unem-ployed. Instead of trying tonurture these opportunities,

the Government has under-taken cuts of 16% which havehit communities right acrossthe country.

“Hubert Humphrey oncesaid: ‘The moral test of a Gov-ernment is how it treats thosewho are at the dawn of life, the children; those who are inthe twilight of life, the aged;and those who are in theshadow of life, the sick andthe needy, and the handi-capped.’ Clearly Fianna Fáiland the Greens’ moral com-pass is way off course.”

Seven out of eight gun murderers get away with itTHE latest fatal gun attack brings to 19 the num-ber of people killed in 2010 as a result of a gangwar that has long since spiralled out of controland is a crisis which the Justice Minister seemsincapable of addressing, stated Fine Gael JusticeSpokesman, Alan Shatter T.D. “The swift actiontaken today by the Gardaí in arresting 10 individ-uals, following the cold blooded assassination ofa man in Portmarnock last night, is to be com-mended. The depressing reality is, however, thatthe chances of somebody being convicted for thecrime are slim indeed. “In response to a Parlia-mentary Question put by Fine Gael earlier thisyear, the Minister for Justice revealed that, of the193 murders involving a firearm committed inIreland between 1998 and 21st of March this year, only 23 convictions had been secured up to that

date. Put simply, during that period seven out ofeight people who committed murder got awaywith it. “Lawlessness cannot be allowed to prevailand the ganglords cannot be left to mete out theirown version of street justice as they see fit. TheMinister is not living up to his most basic re-sponsibility of making sure that people feel safeon the streets of the nation’s capital. Innocent by-standers have been murdered before and, if thekilling is allowed to continue at this rate, it won’tbe long before such a tragedy happens again.“The Minister recently proposed a ‘kidnap tax’ asa means of preventing bank robberies. Let’s hopehis response to the ongoing murder spree inDublin makes a little more sense but, given thatwe are heading for record levels of gun murdersthis year, it is difficult to be hopeful.”

CCCTB – it wasalways justa matter oftimeSINN FÉIN Deputy Leader Mary Lou McDonald hasstrongly criticised the EU Commissions intention to pro-ceed with the introduction of a Common ConsolidatedCorporate Tax Base (CCCTB) for member states. “Govern-ment, Fine Gael, the Labour party and big business inter-est groups such as IBEC swore blind during both LisbonTreaty debates that this could never happen. It is now hap-pening.”

“The Commission has been working on the introduction ofa CCCTB for Europe since 2001. The EU has to varyingdegrees consolidated economic, social and monetary poli-cies. Taxation policy is the next step. Sinn Féin arguedagainst giving the EU further powers during the publicdebates on the Lisbon Treaty. The EU Tax Commissioner Al-girdas Semeta has clearly stated that if member states donot sign up a CCCTB he is prepared to force the issue byusing an enhanced co-operation procedure.”

“The country is broke, billions are being lost to Anglo’sblack hole and the ECB is the only taker when it comes toIrish bonds. The bigger member states are eager to finalisea CCCTB for Europe and Ireland is totally unable to stopthem. Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Innovation canBatt O’Keeffe can huff and puff all he wants, but he knowsthe government has not got a leg to stand on.”

St. James Gaels

SINCE THE start of our Ladies Team 4 yearsago, the Gaels have progressed rapidly tobeing real contenders in the League andChampionship in their division. Having wonthe Junior E Championship in 2009 (a reallyproud moment for the Gaels) and performedwell in division 7, they moved up in 2010 andare proving that once again, they can face thechallenges of both league (division 6) andchampionship (Junior D), as they play onceagain in the Championship Final! TheLadies’success has encouraged our U13s to

keep trying, and sure enough the U13s hadtheir first win of the league earlier on this year. The Gaels also launched an U9s girls team inMay 2010, giving us a firm base for further de-velopment. The highlight of our participationin Clogher Road Sports Centre’s Sports Daythis summer, showcasing Gaelic for Girls, wasmeeting Denise Masterson, Sinead Aherneand Sorcha Furlong of the Dublin Ladies Foot-ball Team. We look forward to cheering themon in the All Ireland Final on 26th September!

Construction activity falls again AUGUST data indi-cated that overall op-erating conditions inthe Irish construc-tion sector contin-ued to deteriorateduring the month, despite a marginalincrease in new busi-ness.

Activity and em-ployment both fellfurther, extendingthe current periodsof decline to thirty-nine and fortymonths respectively. The Ulster BankConstruction Pur-chasing Managers’Index™ (PMI™) – aseasonally adjustedindex designed totrack changes in totalconstruction activity– remained belowthe no-change markof 50.0 in August, sig-nalling a further re-duction of activity inthe sector.

However, thereading of 48.4 – upfrom 45.0 in July – in-dicated that the rateof contraction wasthe weakest in thecurrent sequence(which began in June2007). According torespondents, loweractivity reflectedcontinued uncer-tainty among clients.

Commenting onthe survey, LynseyClemenger, Econo-mist at Ulster Bank, noted that: “Whilethe Manufacturingand Services PMIshave signalled ex-pansion over thepast 5-6 months, thelatest reading of theUlster Bank Con-struction PMI revealsthat operating condi-tions in the Irish con-struction sectorremain particularlytough.

“In fact the PMIis telling us that thesector has been incontraction for 39months now, by farthe longest period ofdecline in the surveyhistory. In terms ofthe detail, activitydeclines remainbroad-based acrossthe three main sub-sectors housing, commercial and civilengineering.

F u r t h e r m o r e ,with new work re-maining scarce, andthe continuing focuson cost contain-ment, employmentlevels across the sec-tor fell for the 40thc o n s e c u t i v e

month.“However, there were also sometentative signs of en-couragement in thelatest survey. Eventhough activity is stillcontracting, the rateof decline continuesto ease, with theheadline index nowat its highest levelsince May 2007.

In addition, neworders rose for thesecond month run-ning in August, albeitthat it is important topoint out that the in-

crease was very mar-ginal. Nevertheless, this explains in partthe continued opti-mism amongst con-struction firms thatactivity in a year’stime will be higherthan the extremelydepressed levels thatprevail at present.

While these sig-nals are welcome, they should beviewed in the contextof what has been anextraordinary periodof weakness for the

Irish constructionsector over the last 3years or so.”

New orders rosefor the second con-secutive month inAugust. However, therate of expansionwas again only mar-ginal as tenders re-mained difficult to

secure.With projects

reaching completionand new work risingonly slightly, Irishconstructors cut em-ployment sharply inAugust. Job cuts havenow been recordedin each of the pastforty months.

Governmentneeds to deal with unemploymentcrisisThe Irish National Organisation for the Uunem-ployed has said the Government needs to "paymore than lip-service to the unemployment crisis".

In launching the 17th 'Working for Work' booklet, the INOU called on the Government to outline astrategy to deal with the scale of the problem.

The handbook provides information for the450,000 people out of work.

Liberty bellegoes for goldA 14-YEAR-OLD localgirl is attempting tokick box her way to agold medal at theWorld Kick Boxingchampionships cur-rently being held inSerbia. A former ma-jorette, ShannonMcGee, started kick-boxing in 2008 at thetender age of 12 at The

Riding the crest ofthis victorious wave,Shannon then set hersights on the All Ire-land, AKAI/ kickbox-ing Ireland, where herimpressive perform-ance quickly securedher place as theyoungest member ofThe Irish KickboxingTeam- no mean feat!As part of the Nationalteam, Shannon (whohas been dubbed ‘TheLiberty Belle’) subse-quently traveled toCroatia in September2009, where she madeboth her communityand her countryproud by making it tothe final and winninga sliver medal.

“I was so excitedabout going to Croatiaeven though I was wayyounger and less ex-perienced than therest of the team”,Shannon told TheLocal News. “It was a

beautiful country, Imet so many friendlypeople and we had abig party at the end. Ilove kick boxing somuch I don’t mindhaving to train threetimes a week, I evenspar with the adultswhen I get a chance.”

Currently the‘Liberty Belle’, who isthe youngest of sevensiblings, is competingin the Wako WorldChampionships inSerbia, aiming for goldand Shannon’s mum,Catherine, couldn’t bemore proud. “She hasbeen 100% dedicatedto the sport for thepast two years and wecouldn’t be prouderparents,” enthusesCatherine. Catherinedoes admit howeverthat she wasn’t alwaysas enamoured withthe idea of her daugh-ter boxing. “I was a bitsurprised when she

started kickboxing, there was no contestand the majorettes gotthe boot,” she laughs.

“ I have to admit Iwas worried aboutwhether she would getinjured at the start, but she gets regularchecks. I try to go tomost of the champi-onships, and her Dad,Harry, goes to everyevent without fail.”Amid all her successhowever, a lack of anofficial sponsor hascast somewhat of ashadow over Shan-non’s glittering career.“Harry lost his job inthe recession last yearand so we are findingit a bit of a struggle tofund her travel ex-

penses etc, so we areactively looking for asponsor to get behindShannon,” Catherinetold The Local News.

Shannon is how-ever not short of localsupport, especially inthe family’s local pubThe Bayno in FrancisStreet. “ The owners ofthe Bayno, Gerry andChristine are very sup-portive of Shannonand have decoratedthe pub with herchampionship pic-tures,” said Catherine.

“ And they passaround sponsorshipcards to customerswho have also beenvery encouraging, thelocal support has beenamazing.”

UNFORTUNATELY,before we can reachthat pleasant summitof achievement, weneed to make big de-cisions about floors, window coverings, sofas. All expensiveitems that representa major commit-ment. Get them rightand we're well on ourway. But get themwrong and they’revery hard to hide.

Is it any wonder thatso many of us end upplaying it safe - withneutral floor cover-ings, neutral blinds, neutral suites. Andyes, we can acces-sorise to our heartscontent, but maybeit’ll never be quitethe gorgeous, vibrantroom we had hopedfor.

So, we've summonedthe help of four expe-rienced Dublin inte-rior designers frompickapro.ie, a web-site which presentsphotos and customerrecommendations

from home improve-ment professionalsto give us a littlecourage for the trip. Here’s their advice….

1. Start with some-thing special

Start with somethingthat you love and thatexcites you - maybe afabric or a picture oreven your favouriteteacup. And let thatset the theme for theroom. You'll find thatthe rest of your deci-sions will follow fromthat. For example, one of my clientsstarted with a shapedchair. Just that simpleitem, led us to a roomthat was curvaceousand soft.

2. Don't jump toconclusions

Pick nothing in isola-tion. Get all yoursamples together firstfor floors, curtains, wall paper, sofas andlook at them to-gether. Don’t jumpahead and buy saythe sofa first. You've

an open mind onwhat’s a feature. Itcould be a fireplace,or maybe an old fash-ioned chandelier, ora painting.

7. What's theweather liketoday

Beware also the effectthat the weathertoday may have onyour decision. "Cus-tomers have a strongtendency to pick darkfloors in Summerand light floors inWinter. It‘s justsome thing to beaware of.

8. Remember thatshowrooms arevery big places

It's a common mis-take to buy furniturein a showroom thatlooks way too bigwhen you get ithome. Measure andtest before you buy.Use sheets of news-paper to mark outfloor area that will becovered. Bring in oldchairs and coverthem with sheets toget a feel for height.

And don't automati-cally go for a suite, especially if you‘relimited for space.Consider a sofa andsome individualchairs or recliners be-cause the chairs thatcome in a suite areoften hugh.

9. Are you a fashionista?

If you want a timelesslook that won't date, then steer clear offashions. Stick towhat's beautiful andorganic, like wood, stone and other nat-ural materials.

10. And finally, don’t be afraidto ask for help

A consultation withan interior designerat the early stagescan save you a lot inthe long run. Here’sthree reasons why…

Reason 1: An interiordesigner will helpyou avoid expensivemistakes. It costs thesame amount to get aroom right as to get itwrong. And a good

interior designershould be able towork to your budget.

Reason 2: An interiordesigner should havea good network ofcontacts amongtradespeople. So, wecan get the workdone and we knowwhat's good value.

Reason 3: Conven-ience, your interiordesigner is also yourshopper. We knowwhat's out there andbring it to you. Soyou don't have torun all over town.

So that’s it. With amix of somethingyou love and lots ofchecking and doublechecking you cancreate a room thatyou can love for everand that has lots ofpersonality – a roomthat’s a worthy set-ting for lots of finish-ing touches – finally!

Start with something special andyou’ll finish with a room you love

www.pickapro.ie would like to thank interior designers, Form Concepts087 657 2831, Interiors 1850 331000 and Taylored Interiors 01 2888635 fortheir advice for this article. Let’s be honest, for many of us, the funpart of decorating our home is finishingit. We see ourselves lovingly addingthose little personal touches like photosor flowers, finding the perfect lamp orfinally hanging that beautiful photo wetook last year. And naturally, we plan toenjoy the streams of compliments aboutour impeccable taste and style!

effectively tied your-self down and youwon't get the resultyou want.

3. Keep it consistent

Aim to maintain theone style throughoutthe room and prefer-ably throughout thehouse, whether yourchosen style is tradi-tional, modern, con-temporary or of aparticular era. Ifyour style is eclectic, choose carefully, as itis a style that can

look very disjointedand messy ratherthan stylish.

4. Live with yoursamples

I always leave sam-ples with the clientsso they can live withthem day and nightunder all lights andcircumstances.

5. Bringing incolour

Wallpaper is a reallygood way of addingextra dimension andcolour to a room.

Good wallpapers andwallcoverings can bedurable and cost ef-fective. For example,it might take 3 daysto paint a room be-cause of the prepara-tion and undercoatsinvolved. However, that same room canbe papered in a day.

6. Feature some-thing (but noteverything!)

Don't try and makeeverything a feature!Let the real featurestand out. And keep

Pick nothing in isolation.Get all your samplestogether first for floors, curtains, wall paper, sofas and look at themtogether. Don’t jumpahead and buy say thesofa first.

Teens with arthritisARTHRITIS Irelandhas launched thefirst ever JuvenileArthritis month tak-ing place in Septem-ber 2010 to raiseawareness of the is-sues facing teenagersliving with arthritisand funds to con-tinue to provide vitalservices for them.

Being a teenager

in Ireland is chal-lenging: Being ateenager in Irelandwith a disease thatpeople normally as-sociate with old ageis even more so. Ju-venile Arthritis (JA) isa debilitatingchronic disease thataffects 1,000 peopleunder 18 in Ireland.

To mark JA

month Arthritis Ire-land has launchedFizz Friends, an on-line chat room whereteenagers can talk toother young peoplewith arthritis in con-fidence and sharetheir experienceswith each other onthe unique range ofissues that they faceevery day.

Michelle Towey,JA Programme Coor-dinator with ArthritisIreland explains“Being a teenagerwith arthritis can bevery isolating. Wehave developed FizzFriends to re-inforcethe vitality of youngpeople with arthritisas opposed to thedisability. It will givethese teenagers theopportunity to talk

freely, openly andwithout fear abouthow their arthritishas affected their lifewith other youngpeople who aregoing through theexact same chal-lenges every day.Simply visithttp://fizzfriends.arthritisireland.ie.

Arthritis Irelandhas also developed‘Positive Future: aweekend workshopto support youngpeople making thetransition fromchildhood to adult-hood. By participat-ing in this workshopthey learn how to un-derstand their arthri-tis, developindependent strate-gies for living and re-alise that a positive

future is possiblewith the right sup-ports.

However, thecost of providingthese services is sig-nificant. Arthritis Ire-land is calling on thepublic to sell JAsperpins in your school, college, office, work-place or communityarea to ensure thatthey can continue tohelp teenagers navi-gate their waythrough the complexphysical, psychologi-cal and social issuesthat they face. Sim-ply contact ArthritisIreland on 016470203 or [email protected] to regis-ter to sell pins.

Thousands missingout on PLC coursesAN AVERAGE ofthree applicationshas been received forevery place in PostLeaving Certificate(PLC) courses in col-leges of further edu-cation, it wasclaimed.

The Teacher'sUnion of Ireland(TUI) has called forthe limit on studentnumbers imposed bythe Department ofEducation and Skillsto be removed im-mediately.

"Research con-ducted by the TUIshows that therewere over three ap-plications for each ofthe 30,000 places inthe sector, a massiveincrease on demandlast year," the unionsaid in a statement.

"Some collegeshave reported thatincreasing numbersof the recently un-employed are look-ing to secure aplace."

However TUIDeputy General Sec-retary Annette Dolan

said severe restric-tions on the sectorstill exist because ofthe cap on studentnumbers.

"We estimatedthis time last yearthat there were twoapplications for eachplace, but the ratiothis year has jumpedto over three for eachplace," she said.

"In the goodtimes when we hadalmost full employ-ment there was a capon numbers in PLCcolleges of about31,000 places.

"It is therefore in-credible that thelimit has not beenraised at all in the re-cession in which wenow find ourselves,"Ms Dolan added.

"The Govern-ment should andmust meet the de-mand for places infurther educationcolleges by fundingmore places in PLCcolleges so thatschool leavers andthose recently un-employed can up

skill and retrain.""We urgently re-

quest that the cap onstudent numbers belifted to assist themin doing so.”

Be yourown lifecoach

WHEN I started writing these articles we werein a time of economic boom. Many people mayhave looked on these articles as just help forthose in some kind of pesonal crisis. But fromthe start, I have said that the methods and tech-niques and ways of thinking that I have sharedwith you here can benefit everyone whetherthey are in crisis or doing very well thank you.

However, it is more often in a time of crisisthat people look for and most need some helpin getting through an experience that is diffi-cult, unpleasant and possibly new and confus-ing to them.

Unfortunately, with the current economicdownturn, property price corrections, unem-ployment and the credit crunch surrounding usand coming at us from all angles, we have allfound ourselves in changed circumstances.

So now we have a situation that is commonto pretty much everyone and a real life exampleof where we can all use the material that I havebeen sharing here.

Throughout this series I have been talkingabout feeling better. The daily news this yearwould hardly help anyone to feel better. There issuch a sensational focus on bad news. And badnews affects everyone negatively. And yet, if youare to be at your best, you need to be feelinggood! Then you are giving yourelf the bestchance to succeed.

So in this issue of The Local News I amgoing to start with this live situation and applywhat I have been writing to surviving this creditcrunch/economic crisis/ recession.

We cannot always control what thoughtscome into our head or are put into it from out-side. But we CAN decide whether or not to con-tinue thinking them. And, most of the time, weCAN actually decide what to think about orfocus on. And this is going to be our first step ingetting in good shape to succeed in this difficultperiod.

I have always talked about goals and targetsand they are what determine our mood, give usmotivation and energy. Things we need in diffi-cult times. Most people being affected by all ofthis gloomy news are undoubtedly focussed onall of the negative aspects, this is what they arethinking about and this is why they are feelingdown, worried, demotivated and scared.

So, before the next article I want you to startto take control of what you think about andfocus on the majority of the time. I want you tostart to focus on your goal. And if you are won-dering what that goal is, what I want you tobegin focussing on is where you want to be andwhat you want to be doing when this recessionis over.

There is not much that most of us can doabout what is happening to the economy ingeneral right now. So there is no point in fo-cussing on and worrying about the general sit-uation. But there is a lot you can do about yourown future.

If you do not have a destination, you justwander and drift and never get anywhere. If youhave a destination, goal or target then you candecide your route and begin your journey there.

We will start doing that in the next issue.See you then.

THE summer hasgone and the harshthoughts of goingback to school areprevalent in theminds of all theyoung kids thedreaded homework, early mornings arethings all young kidshate.

Headlice is verycommon in youngchildren particularlybetween ages 4-11

years and it often oc-curs when kids re-turn to school as theyare in close contactwith lots of others sothe Headlice infec-tion can easilyspread.

Many parentsfeel embarrassedthat their kids haveHeadlice but theyshould not as it isvery easily treated. The best way to

check for Headlice inyour child is with afine tooth comb overa white piece ofpaper.

The hair shouldbe damp to make thecombing processeasier and lesspainful. Such a checkshould be carried outregularly say once aweek particularly be-hind the ears andaround the nape of

the neck. The presence of

live lice will require atreatment, please askyour pharmacist torecommend a spe-cific product for yourchild. All the prod-ucts offer differentadvantages for dif-ferent people for ex-ample certainproducts are moresuitable for asth-matic patients orpeople with sensitiveskin.

Examples ofproducts available atMcKee Pharmacy areDerbac M, Lyclear, and Hedrin. As pre-vention is the bestoption there are nu-merous Headlice re-pellent spraysavailable and the useof Tea Tree shampoois also helpful as anatural repellent.

Another com-mon childhood com-plaint is that of theThreadworm. Usu-

ally parents will no-tice first signs of thechild scratching hisor her bottom, this isa classic symptom ofthe threadworm as itis caused by an aller-gic reaction to thesubstances in andaround the wormseggs laid around theanus.

Itching is gener-ally worse at night.Persistent scratchingcan lead to second-ary infections whichmay require referralto a doctor so it is im-portant to identifythe presence of aninfection soonerrather than later.

The appearanceof cream colouredthread like objects inthe faeces is not un-common.

Parents shouldremember to treat allmembers of the fam-ily at the same timeeven if only one per-son has symptoms. It

s important to cutfingernails short soas to avoid tearingskin but also to pre-vent the transmis-sion of eggs.

Hands should bewashed before eatingand also showeringbefore bed and in themorning to washaway any eggs willhelp too.

How to beat back to school bugs!

IT IS NOW widely accepted that you have lessthan 10 seconds to make an impression withsomeone you have met for the first time. Inmost cases, people make up their mind aboutyou in 4 seconds or less, and that is beforeyou’ve even opened your mouth to speak!! Im-mediately you will be put into one of 3 brack-ets, Good, Bad, or Undecided. So now youknow how quickly a first impression is madebut how do you make sure your first impres-sion is a good one? Well really, it doesn’t haveto be a good impression; it just can’t be badone. We all know that if you greet someonewith a nice warm smile, you are automatically

taken out of the bad impression bracket andput into either the undecided or good bracket. So you could say that smiling is the first stepto creating a good impression.

But what if you hide your smile? At EvolveIreland, we have found that the majority ofpeople that we speak to about Laser TeethWhitening, have come to us because they areashamed or not happy with the condition oftheir teeth. They also tell us that they hidetheir teeth when smiling which gives the im-pression of a false smile and a lack of self con-fidence. When we have performed theprocedure, we can see the confidence in

clients as they leave the clinic with a beamingsmile. We can lighten the shade of clients’teeth by up to 10 shades!! Sometimes we cando it less than an hour but sometimes it maytake a little longer. And best of all, there’s ab-solutely no pain involved (unless of courseyou want some, in which case, we would haveto charge extra for!!)

So whether you are going for a job inter-view, meeting with potential clients, attendinga social occasion or even going on a hot date, make sure that you have the confidence togreet people with a smile because we all knowthat “First impressions last…”

First impressions last

Consultants warnagainst health cutsThe Irish Hospital Consultants Association is calling on theGovernment not to reduce health sector funding in theBudget.

The IHCA has said frontline services are already understrain following a cut of more than €1bn in health spend-ing this year.

In its pre-Budget submission, the association said theGovernment must reverse its plans to make further cut-backs "in the interest of patient safety".

The IHCA President, Dr Margo Wrigley, said the reductionsin acute hospital and mental health services are creatinga crisis.

Dr Wrigley said: "It's having a very devastating affect interms of theatres closing, out-patient clinics being closedover the summer and people spending protracted periodsof days on hospital trolleys before they are admitted toacute beds."

Congress concerns over new ‘workfare’ schemeCONGRESS is particularly concerned about thereports over the weekend that unemployedworkers will be under threat of losing their so-cial welfare if they do not participate in the pro-posed new Work Opportunity Scheme. In aletter to Minister for Social Protection, ÉamonÓ Cuív, Congress General Secretary, David Begghas said that trade unions will vigorously op-pose mandatory participation and 'workfare'schemes that are more about punishing the un-employed than helping them. David Begg hasasked for an urgent meeting with the Ministerto discuss the scheme which, it has been re-ported, includes a proposal for a weekly pay-

ment of €210 for participants if they carry out arange of community or other employmenttasks. He said any scheme should not be usedto down play cut backs or make up for dwin-dling funds for local and community work. Itmust not be used to replace jobs nor to create apervasive climate of fear, David Begg wrote.Hecalled on the Minister to include a number ofsafeguards that Congress wants to see in theproposed scheme including the extension of ex-isting employment rights for all participants. Hesaid that the scheme must be voluntary and re-fusal to participate should not result in any neg-ative impact on social welfare or secondary

benefits. "Participants on the work opportuni-ties scheme are employees and must be recog-nised as such. All employment rights mustapply, such as health and safety, sick leave, hol-idays, protection from discrimination, forcemajeure and maternity and the right to unionmembership and collective bargaining," DavidBegg wrote. "These are minimum decent stan-dards and it must be clear that these legal obli-gations fall on not-for profit employers.Otherwise, there is a danger that conditions forthese workers will be unsafe, unfair, at the graceand favour of their employer and contrary tohuman dignity." He said that employees on the

work opportunities scheme must be providedwith an entitlement to time off to attend at in-terviews and should not be required to work anotice period. "It would be contrary to the pur-pose of the scheme if workers could not attendfor interviews from fear of losing their socialwelfare or if they were unable to take up job op-portunities because of notice periods," he said.Participants on the work opportunities schemeshould be allowed to modify their working timeto allow them to take up part time work oppor-tunities. He said the scheme must ensure thatwomen are not disadvantaged from participat-ing due to child or other care responsibilities.

Now you know about the greatrange of outlets available for yourperusal in The Swan Centre, butdid you also know that just ninemonths ago The Swan Cinemaopened its doors to the viewingpublic? Bringing movie loverslocally and from further a-field theSwan Cinema has been a mostwelcome edition to Rathmines.

SPEAKING with the Cinema manager, PaulJohn Anderson, we learned just how wellreceived the three-screen cinema has been.“We’ve been very busy since day one, it’s greatto see customers coming back” said Paul. “Itwas quiet in June although we were the onlycinema in Ireland to screen the World CupFinals in 3D and the final sold out.”

Of some of the new features on offer at theSwan Cinema Paul said they have been agreat success, particularly the screenings livefrom the MET and there’s great interest in thenew season including a screening of theBolshoi Ballet and Philharmonic Orchestra.

One of the greater successes of the Cinemahas been their hosting of the Indian FilmFestival. The festival got great media coverageand they had the honour of a couple ofdirectors attending screenings including‘Raajneeti’ director, Prakash Jha.

needs is the most important part of runningthe Swan Cinema and this philosophy willstand the test of time.

The Swan Cinema has taken the SwanShopping Centre experience to a new level, and other businesses have risen to meet theexpectations that the Cinema has given thelocal community.

Café Kylemore, uniquely situated on the firstfloor right beside the Swan Cinema entrance, was first to recognise the needs customers ofthe Cinema would have and introducedmenu changes to make the waiting cinemagoers experience even better.

Now a new restaurant located on the mainstreet of the Swan Centre has offers toimprove your experience even more. Fitzroyand Flinders is the brainchild of MichaelMacCurtain, originally from Galway, Michaelcame to Rathmines via Melbourne, Australia.

“Fitzroy is a suburb in Melbourne where Ispent three years as a Chef, and when I cameto Dublin to start this venture I spent monthslooking for the right location and to meRathmines is like a twin of Fitzroy so it madesense to set up the restaurant here” Michaeltold the Local News.

“The Flinders part of the name is the CentralStation in Melbourne which has a clocksimilar to that of the Rathmines Town Hall soit seemed fitting to draw on this comparisontoo” said Michael. Having only opened a fewshort weeks ago Michael is keen to keepadapting their menu and is leaving it up to hiscustomers to decide which direction they willtake.

Already matching their service to the need ofthe community Fitzroy and Flinders are openfrom 7.30am until 10.30 every evening. A

main course will only set you back by €10,amazing value for incredible food. I tried asample of one of Michael’s signature dishes; aKangaroo salad, which I can highlyrecommend it’s a light-refreshing dish withwonderful flavour perfect if you’re heading tothe cinema later on. Michael will beintroducing a cinema ticket and meal deallater this month so watch out for that and themany other great offers that will surely befirm favourites in no time.

The interior of Fitzroy and Flinders isrefreshing and the walls are adorned withsome interesting and unusual art thatMichael picked up from artists in Australiaincluding a wonderful piece by Jeff Coons.

The Coons Monkey is also part of acompetition they are running to name theMonkey.

Check out Fitzroy and Flinders on facebookfor this and news of all their great menuselections and offers. And for all you coffeelovers Michael has another surprise;Aeropress coffee, this is coffee like you’venever tasted before the filtering process ofspecially selected roast beans leaves thecoffee so clear it’s almost translucent andtastes divine.

And here your Swan Centre experiences ends ormore precisely it is just the beg inning. Head downthere now and find out all about it for yourself.

Paul added that it has been great to be sobusy, he believes this is because they haveprovided a consistency of service providing abetter experience for moviegoers. The moveby the Swan Centre to extend and revise theirparking times and rates have been a greatboost for the Cinema, helping to extend theirbusy periods to their matinee shows.

And they too have taken heed of theircustomers needs by extending their studentdeal to run all week. Paul believes that gettingto know your customers and meeting their
