What is a newspaper?
What are they used for?
Newspapers use headlines to grab your attention. Headlines try to tell the story in as few words as possible;

Can you tell which of these sentences are facts and which are opinions?•The house exploded at 9.30am exactly.•The footballer gets paid too much money and isn’t playing well enough.•In Western Brazil, carnivals are lively and exciting.•Barney, the 32 year old Labrador, is the oldest dog in living memory.
Quotations tell us what has been said and who said it. They can help to tell the story by giving the reader the opinions of the people involved.
Eg. Class teacher for Year 3 and 4, Mrs Jones said “They are a lovely class of children and I really like teaching them.”
• “It was the scariest moment of my life!” the 28 year old home owner told us.
• “They’re lucky to be alive!” said Sam Fenton, (35) Chief Fire Officer for Greater Manchester Fire Service.
• Are these quotes FACTS or OPINIONS?
Photos and captions help to tell the story by giving readers a snapshot of what happened, where it happened or who it happened to.
What do you think a report using this picture would be about?
Photos also need a caption underneath them. A caption is a short sentence explaining what is happening in the
photograph.
• Paragraphs help the reader clearly understand the information on the story. Each new paragraph should be given a 'subheading'. This is a very short title that tells the reader a little about what the paragraph is will about.

I can put myself in the place of a journalist in 1921.

What are key facts to include? Paragraph 1- Explain what has just happened and who is involved! -Yesterday, after years of being left undiscovered, Tutankhamun’s tomb was finally completely uncovered by a team of Egyptologists and archeologists led by Howard Carter and Lord Carnarvon. • On November 4th , at around 10am, a waterboy working for the excavation team stumbled upon a step.
• At sunset on the 5th November, after spending a full day clearing the rocks, the 12th step was finally cleared.
• On Monday 20th November, Carnarvon and his daughter arrived in Cairo, and then on 22nd November, joined Carter in Luxor. This ensured that the uncovering of the tomb could commence on 23rd
November. • The men worked again at clearing this area, and on November 26th, the 9 metre long corridor was finally cleared. This corridor led to another sealed doorway.
Paragraph 2- What does Lord Carnarvon and Howard Carter think about it? – Howard Carter gushed, “I am thrilled that we have finally found the tomb of a Pharoah we have been searching for so long!” “We have made history!” added Lord Carnarvon.
