Dear parents, students, staff and governors, There was much purposeful activity during the summer holiday on programmes we organised together with those where we encouraged our students to apply and enjoyed visiting them as they participated. The aca- demic year has begun equally purposefully with stu- dents settling quickly and well to both their studies and the vast array of extra-curricular activities. Already, there have been very successful curriculum trips to Parliament, to Daws Hall for Environmental Studies fieldwork and to the Theatre Royal. As summer slips into what promises to be a very exciting autumn, this month's edition celebrates the record-breaking 2010 examination success along with a tremendous variety of other late summer successes for individual students, groups and indeed the whole school. We were recently congratulated on the way we prepare our students so effectively to use all aspects of Information and Communications Technology. As a result James Brown, Matthew Buckle, Emma Hartnett, Frederick Hughes, Ryan McClean, David Reed and Sam Spurling from our sixth form have been selected by BT as the first national ambassadors. They will work with senior staff at British Telecommunications on this new industrial link at the forefront of technology. We were delighted to return to four external accreditations of our work. Following a rigorous inspection last term, the Department for Education has redesignated us as a High Performing Science and Languages College and a Lead School for Gifted and Talented Activity. In the summer, we had an equally tough reassess- ment of our provision, take-up and results in all five lan- guages on offer, our exchange programmes and the quality depth and scope of our international programme of activities. We were therefore extremely pleased to learn that we have been awarded full International Schools Status for a further three years. In many schools, history is in decline. We therefore congratulate our history department on being awarded the Prince's Institute's Charter Mark. The award reflects the academically challenging and rigorous teaching, the high take-up of the subject at GCSE and 'A' level, together with the outstanding results, and the programme of activities offered. The last award was made by the Department for Education together with the Specialist Schools and Academies Trust. It is given to schools with consistently outstanding results year-on-year who, therefore, are asked to advise on national policies and to support underperforming schools. We congratulate Daniel Cousins, Ayleasha McNairand Freya Wilson who were awarded NuffieldBursaries. These are highly prestigious and enabledthe sixth formers to spend much of their summer holi-days working with research scientists. Daniel workedwith Dr Griffiths at R C Treatts using fractional distillationand chromatographic techniques with different oils andalso made his own unique oil. Ayleasha and Freyaworked with Dr Chia at Broom's Barn on a study ofsugar accumulation within the tap root of beet which hasbeen incorporated into a bid for major funding forresearch. We thank both organisations for giving ourstudents such a fantastic experience.

For the fifth successive year, we were honoured totake part in the UK-Japanese Young ScientistsWorkshop. Alternating between a British and aJapanese University, this year's programme took place at Cambridge University. Natasha Docherty, Emma Jordan and Liam Winward represented ourschool with distinction on projects involving working on nanotechnology and on the consequences of theinvasion of the "harlequin" ladybird. Our students werehighly commended for their laboratory work, their finalpresentations and for their hosting of our Japaneseguests. Well done!

Three of our students were selected to participate inthe Smallpeice Trust's Engineering residentials thissummer:

David Cobbold in year ten took part in theMarine Technology course at theUniversity of Southampton. During the fourdays, he worked in a team designing andmaking a ship as well as going on boardHMS Warrior, cruising around Southamptonharbour and visiting BAE Systems.

Emily Bradley in year eleven travelled to LancasterUniversity to learn how to solve some of the challenges facing the nuclear industry through tackling problems asso-ciated with moving radioactive waste. Emily took part in a"Dragon's Den" type of scenario to gain funding for her groupand wore full protective clothing for the final assessment.

Elizabeth Pascoe, one of our sixth formVinten's ambassadors, went to theUniversity of Leeds for the nanotechnologyexperience which involved making nanoparticles and biosensors and using special microscopes to see atoms and molecules.

A summer of Science Activities

This summer again saw a number of our students inaction with the Suffolk Young Strings, the SuffolkYouth Wind Band and the Suffolk Youth Orchestrawho combined for an end of season concert at SnapeMaltings after the Band's tour to Prague, the Orchestra'sto Amsterdam and its performance during the AldeburghProms season. Imogen Ridge, in year nine, gave a solo harprecital in Felixstowe as part of a series of concerts promoting young Suffolk musicians. Imogen, along withoboeist Emma Cowper, in year thirteen, began asAldeburgh Young Musicians this month. We congratulate both girls.

Madeleine Bantick, in year eleven, performed at theLondon Palladium as part of the National Youth BalletCorps in both "Alice in Wonderland" and "Rainbow Bear"this summer.

Helen Slade, in year eleven, performed with the National

Youth Music Theatre in Londonthis summer in a production of

"Sweeney Todd".

The musician's tour to the West Country was sowell received that we have been invited back to BathAbbey, Wells Cathedral and Weston-Super-Mare.

Once again, our students were fortunate to have thechance to take part in three separate outdoor pro-grammes. All three were hugely successful and allthose who participated represented our schoolextremely well. We congratulate them all.

Abi Harrington, Declan McAllister, Harry Raven,Megan Render, Minh Thu Saggers, Fiona Smee,Millie Stanton, Edmund Walker and Emma Winwardfrom all different year groups took part in the ChutobuSummer Camp at Avon Tyrell with their Japaneseguests.

The students enjoyed a range of outdoor activities andtrips to local places of interest as well as participatingin a talent show to end the week.

Aidan Campbell, Louis Gooden, Harry Jones,Declan McAllister, Harry Raven, Megan Render, MinhThu Saggers, Fiona Smee, Millie Stanton, CaraWilcock, Matthew Wilcock and Emma Winwardaccompanied their Japanese guests from Keio to theEdale Activity Centre for a programme which includedcanoeing, raft building, high ropes and abseiling.

We thank Mrs Browning, Mr Masterman and Mrs Frost for these trips.

Nick Strachan in year thirteensuccessfully completed his GoldDuke of Edinburgh's AwardScheme expedition in the Yorkshire Dales. Well done, Nick!

An Outdoor Summer

DEBATING IN NEWCASTLEThe Debating and Public Speaking Society hasgot off to an excellent start with a full weeklydebate attended by students from all years in ourlibrary every Friday evening. There were twohighlights this month. The first debate of the yearfeatured two previous members of the society:Hannah Jones who has represented NottinghamUniversity in the inter-university European debat-ing competition in Amsterdam and Rain Beckleswho debates for Christchurch University, Kentand who has also debated at the Inner Temple.The second highlight was our participation in theNorthern Junior Debating Competition in Newcastle. Lucy Emmerson, Sam Harrison, Harry Palmer andLauren Warford from year eleven represented us very well finishing as the top comprehensive school and thetwelfth school in the competition which included schools from all over England and Scotland. We thank Mr Dean and Mrs Griffin for accompanying our students.

EXAMINATION SUCCESSWe believe firmly that an all-round education coupled withgetting to know each individual student really well underlieour undoubted examination success across the age and abil-ity range. The 2010 results have allowed the overwhelmingmajority of our students to move onto their chosen path andare testament to their hard work and that of their teacherstogether with the support of parents and carers.

At 'A' level, we managed not only to achieve the high-est A*-C pass rate in Suffolk again this year but to attainthe highest pass rate for the new A* grade. At 12% itwas four percentage points above the national averagewhile the A*-C pass rate was ten points above the national.The really good news is that 91% got into their first choiceof university. Three students got into Oxford Universityand five gained scholarships to American universities.Megan Baxter and Jonathan Soman both gained 3A*grades and an Awhile a further fourteen students(making 18% of theyear) gained atleast 3A gradesand we congratu-late them all:

Laura Anders, Amie Evans, Tom Greenwood, JackKimber, Elodie Limer, Tom Mason, Matthew Miles, BethNewton, Toby Nunn, Jimmy O'Driscoll, Sam Rayner,Beth Whymark, Louis Williams and Sam Wragg.

The AS grades for our new year thirteen students provide a good foundation for their second year of study.We especially congratulate Rachael Fletcher, EmmaJordan, John Parr and Lizzie Watts who gained four Agrades, together with Gemma Baber, Evy Coe, EmmaHartnett, Jessica Nelson, Adam Pearce, Tom Rook andHolly Rush who gained three A grades.

Our outstanding and widely recognised success atGCSE continued this year with further improvements at alllevels. We are extremely proud that again every studentgained at least five GCSE passes including English andMathematics.

Other highlights include:- 25% of the year gaining higher passes in the three

separate sciences;- 82% of the year gaining 5+ A*-C passes;- 62% of the year gaining 5+ A*-C passes including

English and Mathematics;- 23% of the year gaining 5+ A*/A passes.

We congratulate all our GCSE students whose gradesreflect their very best performance. We especially con-gratulate Sophie Baxter, who gained straight A*s in allher subjects (English, English Literature, Mathematics,Biology, Chemistry, Physics, French, German, Geography,History, Religious Studies and Physical Education),together with Grace Waters and James Poulton whogained 11A* grades and 10 A* grades respectively. 39 clubs are now up and running each week withmartial arts due to start next week. We welcome danceteacher and former student, Miss Kent, to our established team.

Twenty four students are enjoying our new twice weeklyhorse riding sessions and have made an excellent start.

We are very proud of four former students. Martha Rawlinson has been awarded a Senior Exhibition by Emmanuel College, Cambridge where she isreading Architecture as a result of her outstanding performance in her first year examinations. Matthew Sharp has been awarded one of eight places outof over three thousand applicants on the prestigious Production Design courseat the National Film and Television School in London. Victoria Baldree is one of ten fashion and textiles students from the Royal College of Art selected by Marks and Spencer to contribute to their Limited Collection. Victoria’s pure silk city print dress is now on sale.Sam Rathbone has been appointed Assistant Director of Music and organistat Rochester Cathedral.
