Two Recent Incidents involving Grizzlies Archery Hunters reminded to stay alert in bear country. (BOZEMAN, Mont.)—Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks is urging archery hunters to stay alert for bears, to know what to do in the case of an encounter, and remember that all of southwest Montana is bear country. Two weekend incidents involving grizzly bears drive this message home. On Saturday afternoon, a hunter received minor injuries after encountering a presumed grizzly while calling for elk in the Cabin Creek area north of Hebgen Lake. Then Sunday morning, another man hunting elk with his bow on the north side of the Tom Miner basin north of Gardiner was mauled by what his hunting party believes was a female grizzly with two cubs. He suffered bite injuries. Both hunters were treated at local hospitals and released. While it is impossible to prevent all events like these, archery hunters should understand the inher-ent risk of hunting in bear country and do what they can to avoid encountering grizzlies. Before venturing into an area, hunters should take notice of warning signs at trailheads, observe the brush at a distance for movement and look at the ground and trees for bear sign (i.e. tracks, scat, and trees scratches). Bear spray should be carried in an accessible place and hunting with at least one other person is highly recommended (in all cases). Note that areas with high deer and elk hunting suc-cess may attract bears (ravens circling may indicate a kill). Elk bugling and cow calling also may bring in bears. It is important to stay alert. Hunters should have with them what they need to immediately field dress their game. If hunters have success in the field and can’t haul their meat out right away they should remove the meat from the kill site and hang it at least ten feet off the ground and at least 150 yards from the gut pile. Returning to the meat later, a hunter should check with his or her binoculars to see if the meat has been disturbed. Hunters should never attempt to haze a bear off a kill. More information about safety in the outdoors and bear awareness can be at FWP’s website here: http://fwp.mt.gov/recreation/safety/wildlife/bears/bearsAndHunters.html.

Gardiner Gateway, Phase II Project Update

September 26, 2016 Construction activities are underway on the Gardiner Gateway Phase II Project. The Phase II project is within

Gardiner on East Main Street, West Main Street, East Park Street and 1st street.

This week the concrete crew will be working on the stairs on 1st Street, the pavilion in Confluence Park, and sidewalk at the end of East Park Street. The excavation crew will be grading West Main Street between 3rd and 4th street. After grading is complete, we will bring in sub-base material and recycled millings. To meet

compaction specs, a vibratory roller will be used on West Main Street.

Residents and businesses located on or use East Park Street, 1st Street and East Main Street, a paving crew will be on site this week. We are planning to pave East Park Street, 1st street, and East Main Street in three layers. In order to make the paving process time efficient, Riverside is asking to have all vehicles park off

those streets for three days. This will give the paving operation an opportunity to complete a layer for each day, three days total with weather permitting. During the three days, all sidewalks will be available and flag-gers will be on site to assist pedestrians to their destinations.

Should you have any questions regarding construction activities or schedule, Federal Highway Administration, National Park Service and Riverside Contracting will be available at the

weekly public meeting held at the Community Center every Monday at 5:30 pm.

NIGHTLIFE Rusty Rail Lounge & Casino. Monday nights: Get here before the game starts and we will feed you at half time. Thursday nights: $5.00 Bud Light Pitchers & $7.00 micro brew pitchers. Friday nights: extended happy hour for year-round locals until 9pm. Please bring an ID with your address.

Significant 2016 Wildfire Season in Yellowstone

Highest Number of Acres Burned for the Health & Benefit of the Park Since 1988

As of September 21, 2016, 22 fires (human and light-ning-caused) have burned more than 62,000 acres in Yellowstone National Park, making it the highest num-ber of acres burned since the historic 1988 fire season when approximately 800,000 acres burned. Of the 22 fires this year, four (the Maple, Buffalo, Fawn, and Central fires) make up the majority of the acres burned. The Boundary Fire was suppressed at 192 acres and the remaining 17 fires were very small, together total-ing only 14.18 acres. Of these 17 fires, 12 were one-tenth of an acre or less in size; four were between one-tenth to one acre; and one was 9 acres. The park protects human life and developed areas (e.g., roads, buildings, and other infrastructure) from the threat of wildfire. At the same time, fire is allowed to carry out its ecological role on the landscape as much as possible. This season, 11 fires were immediately suppressed because values were at risk. Seven fires were the result of human activity such as campfires not being put out, vehicle operations, or improper cigarette disposal. Fifteen fires were caused by lightning strikes. The five active fires – Maple, Buffalo, Central, Fawn and Jasper - are being managed to allow fire to perform its natural role in the ecosystem. Wildfire is an essen-tial, natural process. The largest of these fires, the Ma-ple fire, has burned over 45,000 acres. As fall approaches and brings with it cooler tempera-tures, shorter days, and some recent precipitation, fire activity slows. Concentrations of down trees in some of these fire areas will burn until snow blankets the Yellowstone plateau. Visitors will see smoke rising within burned areas from time-to-time as wind and warmer weather pass over the area. This will occur un-til enough moisture accumulates to extinguish the hot spots. Since 1988, the number of fires in Yellowstone Na-tional Park has ranged from one to 78 in a given year. As seen this year, lightning is the major cause of fires within the park. In an average year, the park will see 26 lightning-caused fires. Human-caused fires are still a significant contributor to the fire history within the park. The public hears much about the large fires that occur in Yellowstone, yet, 75 percent do not reach more than 0.25 acres in size. About 92 percent never burn more than 100 acres. These fires occur in areas where fuel conditions and topography limit the fire’s growth or they go out on their own due to weather. Another fac-tor in keeping the average size of fires low is the quick response by the park’s fire crews to suppress any hu-man-caused fire. Yellowstone National Park’s management philosophy allows fires to play their natural role in the ecosystem while protecting personal safety, natural and cultural resources, and other significant values within the park. Many changes have occurred within the Yellowstone ecosystem over the centuries and fire is one of the influences that have made the park what it is today.
