COVER

MARY MAGDELENE (Feast Day 22nd July)

Mary of Magdala (her hometown, a village on the shore of the Sea of

Galilee) was a leading figure among those attracted to Jesus. When the

men in that company abandoned him at the hour of mortal danger, Mary

of Magdala was one of the women who stayed with him, even to the

Crucifixion. She was present at the tomb, the first person to whom

Jesus appeared after his resurrection and the first to preach the

“Good News” of that miracle.

CLERGY LETTER FROM CANON DAVID GODWIN

Dear Friends, We are three weeks into the vacancy period without a Rector but I am pleased to

report that the process for finding a new incumbent is now under way. Two represen-

tatives from each parish have been appointed to help in selecting a new parish priest.

They will, of course, be guided by Bishop Michael and Archdeacon Jacky. Please pray

for these people that they will discerning and wise in making a new appointment.

Talking of prayer, we are meeting every Monday at our house at 3pm to study the

Bible and pray that the right person will come to our Benefice. Please come and join

us even if you cannot make every week. So far we have studied Noah, Abraham,

Moses, Joshua, the judge Gideon, Ruth, Samuel, the priest and prophet, king David

and the account in the Acts of the Apostles Chapter 1 verses 12 to the end, of

the eleven disciples praying for someone to replace Judas and choosing Matthias.

What we have so far learnt is that God, through his Holy Spirit, chooses all sorts of

people and in all sorts of ways, to further his purposes on earth. So we have God re-

vealing himself to Moses in a burning bush and instructing him to go to Pharaoh to ask

that he “let my people go.” Or by contrast, there is Ruth, a foreigner and a woman,

whom God uses to forward his salvation for all mankind. We all need to be open to the

Holy Spirit for guidance in choosing a new Rector. He or she, may not be what we

expect or even who we want! God does, to quote the hymn, “move in mysterious ways”!

Just because we are without a Rector, does not mean that we just sit back and wait

for a new person. We all have a role to play that our seven churches are not only just

kept going but that we strive to encourage our friends and neighbours to come and

join us. In other words, we need our Churches to grow. There are several initiatives

that Martin has started and that we must build on, whether it be Messy Church, The

Home Groups or the Breakfast Clubs. But essentially it is our duty to tell people the

Good News of Jesus, who was, by the way of the lineage of the aforementioned Ruth.

I would like to share with you this prayer, which I trust you will make your own at this

important time:

Almighty God

The giver of all good works,

Those who are to choose, a faithful pastor

For this benefice

That we may receive

One who will speak your word and serve your people

According to your holy will,

Through Jesus Christ our Lord,

Amen

With very blessing,

David

CHRIS’S CORNER

Well, we just about managed to get the job done and as expected it was

all a mad dash. Across four weeks things were manic as we all tried to

bring order to the garden. As expected there was plenty of stock and

indeed in some places, there still is, so if you are still looking there will

be bedding around well into the summer.

With the Busy Lizzie out of the frame

(unless you picked up the chunky New

Guinea types) the market was awash with

Geraniums. They were the substitute and

great value too. They are such solid per-

formers, tolerant of much that nature

sends and reliable right through to the

end of the season. It will be interesting

to see how that season does end. The prophets of gloom (on the wrong

day, me included) have predicted another testing year, yet nature al-

ready seems set to confound. If the set fruit on trees goes to maturity

the trees are likely to fall down. I have plums and apples tumbling with

immature fruit and things generally, after a rocky start, are growing

with some vigour. Inevitably there are shadows, there is a fair bit of

fungal activity, with white mildew dusting some plants and the yellow tell

tale signs of early blight. The humidity is up so it is inevitable. Spraying

aside, the thinning of foliage, generous spacing and in greenhouses good

ventilation may all serve to ease this. This practice may also ease pest

problems, white fly just don’t enjoy the breeze much.

I am still sowing seed and as recorded in the past, even immature crops

taste good. So, running in a line of lettuce or spilling out a few peas for

the shoots will make for productive use of space. Of course there are

normal offerings and you should find spring cabbage plants as well as

spinach and oriental vegetables (which mature quickly) available.

The main business over the coming weeks is to care for and maintain

what you have though, tidying and feeding to get the best from what you

have got. Keep the lawn sensibly mown, dead head, keep harvesting to

encourage more and feed and water especially contained subjects.

And finally, watch and enjoy, tomorrow approaches rapidly.

Happy Gardening

The Ladies’ Breakfast group will meet again on 6th July from 8:30am - 10:00am at

Mary Limbrick’s house. More ladies are always welcome and if you’d like to come,

please contact Mary on 01452 731257. If you’re able to make a donation to help

cover costs that would be good (but not essential!).

Home Groups

We have two home groups which meet for bible study, prayer and fel-

lowship—a weekly group which meets every Wednesday at the

Godwins at 3pm and a monthly group which will next meet on Thursday

18th July at 7:30pm at Church House, Staverton—the home of Katie

and Edmund McClure.

CENTRAL MOBILE LIBRARY

As part of the new Library Strategy there have been changes to the mobile

library service. Routes F and H no longer exist and so there will be no visits to

Sandhurst, Norton and Staverton. The only remaining visit on ‘our patch’ will be

at The Swan, Coombe Hill.

FEEDBACK

Thank you

Donations received to date amount to over £1500 and there is still a little more to

come. It is never too late to donate to Christian Aid, but it would be helpful if any

further envelopes could be returned to your nearest church as soon as possible.

Particular thanks to those people who were prepared to collect from door to door—

it makes a huge difference. This is what Christian Aid is about, making a differ-

ence to the lives of less fortunate people by providing training and tools which en-

able communities to become self-sufficient.

COLIN’S COMPUTER COLUMN

Solid State Drives As the cost of solid state memory continues to move relentlessly (and

gratifyingly) downwards, one might ask whether or when we might ex-

pect to see the conventional hard disk drive replaced by a kind of su-

per memory stick - the solid state drive (SSD).

Well, the "when" has started, but the "whether" is more complicated.

It seems intuitive that the conventional hard drive with its multiple

gramophone-like collection of fast spinning platters should be less reli-

able, less robust, slower and more complex than a chunk of solid state

memory with no moving parts. The main deterrent to replacing the

hard drive, however, is still cost. Hard drives, like TV sets, are pro-

duced and sold in such huge numbers that they are comparatively

cheap, considering their complexity. The SSDs coming onto the mar-

ket now cost around £300 for 512GB of storage, as compared to less

than £100 for a hard drive with 3,000GB (3TB) of storage. And, per-

haps surprisingly, the reliability of SSDs at present is not particularly

higher than that of good quality hard drives. But there's no denying

the high data transfer rates of SSDs. I read one estimate that a full

length Blu-Ray DVD can be replayed in less than a minute by an SSD

(not that you'd want to do that....). More significantly, SSDs excel at

multitasking; dozens of input/output threads can be handled simulta-

neously. This is why we are seeing SSDs primarily for desktop com-

puters with seriously big and complex tasks to do, but the case for

SSDs for laptops and tablets is also strengthening because SSDs can

be made so thin and flat.

All very promising, but don't buy now unless you need to. Prices will go

on falling.

In a way, it's rather quaint that we call some solid state storage devices "drives". The drives we had before (tape, floppy disk, hard disk, etc) were so called because of their moving parts. We have now kept the same word for things with no moving parts. Oh well, I suppose it would seem odd to call them "stores" or even (ominously) "brains".

We recently had some training which highlighted the growing dilemma concerning long

term care. With better health care, housing conditions and nutrition, we are part of a

society in which the majority will enjoy a long and healthy ‘old age’. However, for

some, there will inevitably be a need for some form of long-term care, and there re-

mains a lot of confusion around that subject. The statistics we were given show that

across the population:

34% believe long-term care in old age is free

26% believe taxes will cover the cost of support

63% have not even considered how they are going to pay for their long term care.

In actual fact:

41% of care residents are self-funding (National Average)

Up to 25% of these run out of funds, often necessitating a move to alternative

accommodation

Gloucestershire County Council, aware of the gap in information, have introduced a

new initiative to support people who would be responsible for funding their own care.

PayingForCare is a not-for-profit free, independent information and advice service

which can answer questions on all aspects of long term care and offer access to Spe-

cialist Care Fees Advisors who can give advice on the best way to pay for your care

and avoid running out of money. They have a Freephone number 0808 208 9994

Taking advice can allow everyone to make informed choices about future care pathways and how they can fund their care. The consequences of not getting the right advice can include receiving the wrong type of care, running out of money and leaving no inheritance for loved ones, having to be

moved to an alternative provider, and the council picking up the cost.

Make sure you have the information to make the right choices in the future.
