The Harvest Challenge is a community event that seeks to create healthier students and stronger rural economies by linking school food service programs with local food producers. The Challenge is a menu planning and cooking contest for high school students highlighting the many delicious benefits of fresh and nutritious local foods in school lunch programs.

• October 2012 was National Farm to School Month and launching point of Vernon County Farm to School’s state funded outreach campaign.

• Two-year grant funding totals $160K • Received from Transform Wisconsin (www.transformwi.com) • Used to build on the best practices and policies in each district to develop

a comprehensive and integrated Farm to School program in Vernon County.

• Year Two target schools: • Hillsboro, Kickapoo, Westby
