Atownbuiltuponaboominggraniteindustrythatwentbustinthe1920s,Hardwick,Vermont,wasindesperateneedofeconomicandcommunityrevitalization.Startingin2006,thetown’syoungartisansandentrepreneursreturnedtotheirroots,bandingtogethertobuildathrivingeconomycenteredaroundfoodandagriculture.Numerousfood-relatedbusinesses,suchasVermontSoyandJasperHillFarm,havesetupshopaspartofHardwick’sexpandingfoodmovement.They’vebroughtwiththemnearly100jobs,ayear-longfarmers’market,alargecommunitygarden,anon-profitcalledtheCenterforanAgriculturalEconomy,awildlysuccessfulorganicseedcompany,andtheVermontFoodVentureCentertoaidnewagriculturalentrepreneurs.Hardwick’sfarm-basedlocalfoodeconomyhasbeenbuiltuponthesteadfastcollectiveeffortofresidentswhoassistoneanotherinestablishingtheirbusinesses,conservingfarmland,andproducingfoodsustainably.Farmersandbusinessmenregularlymeettoshareexperiences,advice,andevencapital—thusfar,they’velenteachother$300,000inshort-termloans.
