6 Nottingham Local Magazine| April - May 2016

Of course you are, so in preparation for your Spring wardrobe, please find below 10 styles you may be wearing when the days become warmer and longer.

From sexy bare shoulders and lingerie-inspired dressing to an inventive twist on the classic white shirt.

These styles deliver big on statement factors, and will give you ideas for your Spring wardrobe.

So here are the biggest trends for you to consider this Spring.

Shimmer and ShineSpring 2016 has brought the high-shine details to everything from everyday shorts to special-occasion cocktail dresses, giving our whole wardrobes a little shimmer.

No need to wait for the holidays to get your sparkle on.

All Tied UpFor those ladies that feel comfortable showing off your middle, soft tie belts will produce and sculpt an hourglass shape.

The waist will be the focal point of every outfit this Springtime with everything from ties over jackets to sashes and belts.

RufflesA real girlie look but all grown up this time around. Ruffles will be seen in the high street giving a flirtatious feminine vibe.

This will include an effect which will be sculptural, giving dimension to tops and sheath dresses with a more contemporary appeal.

Iolanda Shaker (Image and Style Consultant) | [email protected]

White ShirtAn essential staple for your wardrobe a classic white shirt.

Can be buttoned- up or down, ruffled, or slashed, the white shirt is a definite high-fashion twist that will make this old favourite a cool-girl Spring essential.

Cold ShouldersThe shoulder area is usually one of the most attractive areas of a female’s body.

So to complement this off-the-shoulder neckline this season, designers have taken the look a step further with cutouts which will highlight the shoulder, making light wear knits more breathable, dresses breezier, and everything just a little sexier.

Wrap UpWe have seen wrap dresses, wrap tops so now we have the wrap skirt! Without showing too much leg this look will just give a hint of skin.

A good option for your work wardrobe knowing, you can still get away with wearing a wrap skirt to the office.

Lingerie LookWith slips draped on top of tees, our underthings are not so undercover this Spring.

These lingerie-inspired pieces might just be the sexiest look you can slip into for Spring — and these slinky silhouettes are made for going out on the town, not just the boudoir.

Babies have to learn how to fall asleep. They will easily drift off whilst feeding but to actually learn how to fall asleep independently is a skill.

Try to give them as many opportunities as possible from day one to fall asleep in their moses basket, but only if they are fed and comfortable.

To assist the above point, new babies like to be swaddled as this mimics the cosy confinement of the womb. Using a sheet or thin cellular blanket swaddle baby firmly.

It may appear that sometimes baby fights against this but in fact at this early age they have no control over their limbs and movements, so a) it’s impossible for them to actively try to get free, and b) very importantly it helps to prevent sudden jerking of their arms and legs as they try to fall asleep.

Squirming or crying is more likely being caused by wind or discomfort.

Winding – baby needs to be upright either in a sitting position on your knee or up on your shoulder. Winding needs to be a firm pat on the middle of baby’s back, a too lighter tap will be ineffective.

If baby hasn’t burped after 5-6 minutes of winding it’s unlikely that they will do so at this point. Often a burp can erupt 20-30 minutes post feed.

In the first 2-4 weeks aim for a 3 hourly pattern to feeding and sleeping;

• 1 - 1.5 hours feeding and winding

• 1 – 1.5 hours settling and sleeping.

From about 4-5 weeks this cycle can evolve to 3-4 hourly;

• 1 hour feeding and winding

• 15-30 minutes awake time

• 2 hours settling and sleeping.

By sticking to this pattern babies quickly learn what to expect next which gives them a sense of security.

Many mums are surprised at how much sleep their baby should have;

• Newborns 16 – 20 hours sleep in a 24 hour period

• 1-3 months 15 – 18 hours

Distinguish between night and day – keep lights low and voices quiet at night.

More useful tips next time. If any readers have any other basic information which they wish they had known as a new parent, please feel free to email me.

Tracy is a Postnatal Doula (TaylorMaid Doulas) who helps mums after the birth of her baby. She is also a Night Nanny, offering respite to exhausted parents, and a Sleep Consultant helping children with sleep problems.

For more information on any of these services please email [email protected] or phone 0771 805 9708 or 0115 981 7175

I am sometimes surprised at how little basic babycare information some mums have been given, so without wanting to ‘teach granny how to suck eggs’ here are some very fundamental bullet points. In fairness, I myself didn’t know some of them 23 years ago when I had my first son.

We’re often made to believe that the latest lotions and potions will solve our skin issues. Glamorous, persuasive advertising is hard to resist! Some of us rely on our GP too to provide medications that will make us feel better, but they often come with side effects.

However, there is a growing awareness by the consumer that the state of your skin is a reflection of your inner health. All it could take is a look at your food.

Much of our food lacks the required levels of nutrients our bodies need in order to function optimally. Modern farming methods, depleted soil nutrients and refined, processed foods leave our bodies struggling to cope and our skins

baring the brunt.

Dry, dehydrated or irritated skin?

Eat good fats

Dry skin is often indicative of inadequate Essential Fatty Acid intake. Your cell membranes need these EFAs so that they

can do a better job of controlling what goes in (nutrients and H2O) and out (toxins) of the cells.

When they don’t contain enough EFA, they’re unable to retain water and lose their plumpness causing dehydration, itchiness, inflammation and redness.

Good fats, or EFAs like Omega Oils can be found in oily fish, flaxseed, walnuts and chia seeds. Consider popping to the Health Food shop in West Bridgford for some Evening primrose, starflower and cod liver oil. These oils can also help with balancing your hormones so great for women!

Ageing Prematurely? Cut out sugar

and increase your Vitamins

Free Radicals are constantly formed in the body as part of cellular metabolism. They can even destroy viruses and bacteria. However, a high level of free radicals can cause cell damage and skin ageing due to the destruction of elastin fibres and collagen and can even cause cancer. Eating antioxidants helps to combat the build up of these free radicals. Even in ancient times it was known that eating fruits and vegetables were essential for good health. The most important vitamins for the human body are Vitamins A, C, E, D and carotenoids.

Fruits and vegetables are packed with these essential vitamins (antioxidants). Make your plate as colourful as possible to obtain a good variety of these health-giving properties and to keep your skin looking supple and luminous.

I could go on forever, but I think you’ll agree, creating yourself a healthy eating lifestyle of fruit, vegetables and lean meats and fish is the best way to look after your health and your skin. Cut down or remove processed foods, sugars and chemically manipulated ‘food’ stuff and you could soon see a change in your health, energy and complexion.

Last year after doing the Nottingham 100 Miles bike ride, I decided that was the icing on the cake and I couldn’t better it. Well I was wrong!

I have been asked by the Motor Neurone Disease Association if I would like to take part in the London… Night ride in June.

I kept it quiet, this was sent by email. So Tim, my cycling buddy and husband hadn’t seen it.

Three weeks later I thought I would mention it thinking he would say “London? No way!”

He said “Yes”, how wrong can Von be?!

So in June WE will be doing the London night ride for MNDA

I must start my training, I haven’t done much since October. I think maybe I should get some lights too!

I have supported the Motor Neurone Disease Association [MNDA] for over 7 years, after my Mum was diagnosed with MND.

What a horrible cruel disease it is. My heart goes out to all the people that are dealing with this disease at the moment and love to all of you that have been through what I went through.

If you would like to sponsor me, I do have a justgiving page Vonnie Daykin MNDA or you could contact me directly on 0115 937 3940. Vonnie Daykin

Down to Earth

14 Nottingham Local Magazine| April - May 2016

Where do you start at this time of the year?

There are so many jobs to do in your garden during this period of the gardening season. Prioritising what needs doing is a good place to start and concentrating on those tasks will save you time in the future.

Shrubs

Prune shrubs very lightly in their formative years, taking out only the flowered stems. Full pruning can be undertaken once they have reached their mature height and spread.

To encourage vigorous new growth, water thoroughly after pruning, feed with a balanced fertiliser, and apply a mulch to conserve much needed moisture.

Planting

For an instant hit of colour plant perennial wall flowers now!

Large plants are available at garden centres. Not only are they colourful, but they are easy to grow, drought tolerant and have scented blooms.

Weed and dig over your flower beds to get some air in to your soil. The previous winter would have compacted the soil preventing air flow and vital soil nutrients may have been lost due to run off.

Lawns

Feeding and weeding can begin towards the end of the month, providing that the grass is actively growing. The soil is usually moist in May, but a prolonged dry spell can occur. If this happens water before obvious signs of distress and make sure you take care to irrigate copiously.

Thanks again and remember to keep on enjoying your garden!

Nev

The ‘odd number’ day exercises :

Chair knee drives With your hands on the edge of the chair, ensure your chest is over your hands and draw your tummy muscles in towards your spine.

Hold this position while you take a knee towards the elbow of the same side, then return that foot back to the starting position before driving up with the other knee.

This should be controlled with your aim to get your knee to touch your elbow, or as close to as possibl - don’t worry if you are struggling Your flexibility will improve over the 30days).

Chair decline bridgesLie on the floor with your bum close to (almost touching) the chair with your heels on the chair itself. Pull your tummy muscles in and clench your butt then drive your hips up off the floor towards the ceiling, trying to get it above chair height. Aim to lift your butt up as high as possible before lowering to touch the floor while keeping your tummy and butt squeezed throughout, and repeat.

The ‘even number’ day exercises :

Chair incline press ups Have your hands on the chair, wider than shoulder width and lift yourself up to adopt a position similar to the knee drives. With your tummy in and chest over hands, bend at your elbows to lower your chest towards the chair (ideally, until your chest touches the chair). The incline makes these easier than normal press ups, so if you think you couldn’t do a normal press up you might surprise yourself with this version. If you are struggling to get the depth, just go to a point from which you can push yourself back to the start.

Chair triceps dips

Sit on the edge of your chair and place your hands on the chair, close to your hips. Adopt a good posture by trying to place your shoulder blades into your back pockets and lift your chest up proud, maintain this position throughout the exercise. Now take your body off the chair and lower it down towards the floor remain close to the chair so you can feel it against your back.

Lower to where you feel manageable or to 90 degrees at your elbows then push through your hands to drive your body back up. Tip: the further away your legs are the harder it is.
