EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE

“All children are artists.” – Pablo Picasso

I love the fact that we dedicate a month of gallery space to our youth in the community. People ask me all the time, “How can you give up a whole month to this type of exhibit?” My response is, “How could we not!”

I am a firm believer that art is very important in the education system and to our future.

In the early 2000s Gualala Arts took part in a 3-year study by the California Arts Council proving that art in the schools improves student’s grades, confidence and well-being. We put artists in over 30 K-8 classrooms in each school on the coast from Manchester to Fort Ross. In addition to putting artists in classrooms we also held performances at the arts center for youth and teachers.

We spent a great deal of time doing pre- andpost- student interviews, analyzing grades and evaluating teacher impact, and then all of these scores were tallied in a California statewide project.

The results proved with quantitative data that arts in the schools helps students’ creativity, happiness, self-esteem and actually improved grades in other areas of study such as math, English and science.

So, a big Thanks to all the teachers and educators keeping art in the schools alive and thriving… YOU DO MAKE A DIFFERENCE!

I was blessed to grow up in a family and community that valued the arts. My mom, grandmother and aunt were all teachers specializing in art, and my father was a jazz drummer for many years and taught me how to play and listen to music. I carry that passion, vision and dedication to providing an arts education to our youth through my role at Gualala Arts.

We are proud to say that Gualala Arts continues our commitment to our community (long after

the grant money evaporated) by hosting an annual student art exhibit, Jazz in the Schools performance, young artist award categories, PPQG quilt raffle scholarship, free admission to most events for youth aged 7-17, open clay studio, pinewood derby races and a summer arts program for youth.

And, for those who would like to continue their arts educations… we have wonderful classes and workshops year-round for all ages…

“All children are artists. The problem is how to remain an artist once you grow up.” – Pablo Picasso

Rebeca Trevino calls her three-dimensional work in this month’s exhibit “Obtainian Art”. She says it begins with any number of materials stored in her Santa Rosa area studio collected during her various scavenger trips. Trevino finds treasures at garage sales, flea markets, second-hand stores, through donations and even in dumpsters. The important thing, is that each found object appeals to her and is rescued to serve a new purpose.

Trevino feels placing discarded, forgotten, or rejected objects in a new context gives them new life and her instinctive juxtaposition of objects in a new pattern makes her work distinctive and each construction has its own personality.

In her first two-person show at The Dolphin gallery, Santa Rosa artist Paula Strother will present a cross section of her very prolific oeuvre.

Strother says she pays particular attention to the effect of light on her subject matter and many of her pieces suggest the soft tones of late afternoon, filtered light shining through an unseen window, or distinct clarity of a landscape.

Regardless of subject matter, Strother’s preferred medium is acrylic paints because shefinds the quality allows for texture or more watery, softer tones. She says acrylics also enable her to work spontaneously, making quick adjustments to achieve the desired effect.

The Mendocino/Sonoma “Arts in the Schools” program represents over 600 students from Fort Ross, Kashia, Horicon, Arena, Point Arena High School, home study, Pacific Community Charter, and Manchester schools.

This year’s coordinators, Sigrid Hillscan and Keri VanDeventer, both of the Pacific Community Charter School, have decided that the theme this year will be “Living! Color!”

These coastal schools are fortunate to be able to provide art programs that enrich students with time each week to create art. Research shows that art and creativity help children succeed in core curriculum subjects. Continuing to have art programs in our local schools is a huge accomplishment especially considering current budget cuts to such programming. The community’s attendance and support are appreciated.

resides in San Rafael, Calif., and has had a varied and serendipi-tous Broadway career.

He got his first union acting job in 1989 playing Horace Greely in “Susan B!” He then spent a few years in New York City in various musicals before returning to San Francisco to resume a ca-reer in rock music. That would have to wait, however, as he landed a role in “Les Miserables” that turned into three years and six roles. Subsequent Broad-way stints included “Cyrano-The Musical,” “Phantom of the Opera”, the national Broadway tour of “Jekyll and Hyde”, “Ama-deus” and three productions of “MASS” by Leonard Bernstein at The Vatican in Rome, Carnegie Hall in NYC, and with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. Needless to say, Blaisdell has some stories to tell about Broadway.

Making ittoBroadway: An evening of songs, monologuesand stories

Local EyesPresents

This collection of songs, theater monologues and quotes from Broadway stars (and the not-so-famous who actually did make it to Broadway) pondering their own motivations to dance and sing on the boards of Broadway promises to be not only entertaining but possibly inspiring and maybe even surprising, says Don Krieger, who will be accompanying Geoffrey Blaisdell on keyboard.

The show features hits from the shows “Les Misérables,” “On the 20th Century,” and “America’s Sweetheart’,” and songs by Cole Porter, “Yip” Harburg, George and Ira Gershwin, and Randy Newman; monologues from Shakespeare, Tracy Letts, Sam Shepard and Peter Schaffer.

PACES is the collaborative performance company of Dancer/Choreographer Lucinda Weaver and Poet/Storyteller Alan Bern. Bern and Artist/Printmaker Robert Woods have worked together under the imprint of Lines & Faces for over forty years. All three come together in this one-of-a-kind performance “Divining Triptychs: Printmaking, Dance, and Poetry across Millennia.”

The performance includes the poem “Dialogue,” a dramatic imagined exchange between Hildegard of Bingen and St. Francis of Assisi, from Bern’s latest book, “Greater Distance: and Other Poems,” published by Lines & Faces in December 2015, and illustrated by Woods. Following the performance, during the reception, Bern will read other selections from his book.

PACES collaborations begin from an idea of Weaver’s dance or Bern’s words, which are then woven together in a dance that fits the

given space, in this case the floor of Coleman Hall. Also featured is original music composed and recorded by local artists, saxophonist, Harrison Goldberg, and electric bassist, Dave Jordan, aka the duo “Pacific Woods,” from their newly released recording, “Pool of Mirrors.” CDs will be available for purchase.

The repertoire of Petar & Daniel Guitar Duo aims to reach not only traditional audiences, but to bring guitar music to the general public, who may be unfamiliar with the instrument’s repertoire and techniques. Petar and Daniel have fused their native Serbian and Brazilian cultural heritages and combined their guitar skills to accomplish this goal.

Performances by Daniel Duarte and Petar Jankovic include original works for guitar ensemble, as well as arrangements specially designed for the duo.

Daniel Duarte is adjunct lecturer in guitar at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. He is an active performer, arranger, conductor, and lecturer who has won several guitar and chamber music competitions in his native Brazil as well as in Europe and the United States. His academic and artistic recognitions include the Presser Foundation outstanding graduate music student award that supported his dissertation research and the Joan C. Edwards Distinguished Professor of Arts by Marshall University, among others. Daniel is married to the niece of local resident Steve Chell.

Petar Jankovic began his guitar studies at age 8 in Serbia where he later earned a degree in classical guitar from the renowned Music Academy in Belgrade. While in Serbia, he became a two-time gold medal, silver medal, and two-time bronze medal winner at the National Music Competition. At present, he lives in Indiana and is a professor at Indiana University Jacobs School of Music in Bloomington, Indiana.

POLARISDANCE TROUPE

Les Filles Rougesin FaerietaleLand!6th Annual BurlesqueExtravaganza!

Gualala ArtsPresents

In its return to the Gualala Arts Center Coleman Hall stage, Polaris Dance Troupe presents an evening of burlesque with Les Filles Rouges in Faerietale Land, a unique blend of dance, comedy, and empowerment -- much more than a series of strip teases.

This new show is a send-up of the fairytale genre and the Disneyfication of classic stories. The cast is full of well-known characters such as Sleeping Beauty and Cinderella, but without the theme of “damsels in distress.”

Polaris Dance Troupe’s founder, Melinda Miller-Klopfer, gained inspiration for Les Filles Rouges from her time spent living in Berlin and her frequent travels to Paris, both cities where the burlesque tradition has a long and politically charged history. Miller-Klopfer

coined the term “Progressive Burlesque” to describe her Mendocino troupe’s style, having experienced the profound effect of burlesque on her own life and the lives of many of the troupe’s dancers.

Using sensuality and comedy as tools of empowerment – for both the performers and the audience – progressive burlesque aims to enrich as well as titillate.

Les Filles Rouges believes in supporting women on and off stage, and in that spirit, Miller-Klopfer says, a portion of the Polaris of Polaris Dance Troupe’s proceeds from the show will benefit Planned Parenthood.

VIP Seating for an addtional $150 includes a bottle of champagne and front-row cabaret table seating for 4.
