Since 1965, the story of Wil-son Overhead Door is one of family and perseverance. The original operation was run out of the backyard of Travis Dav-enport before moving locations to Holden’s Crossroads. In 1967, Travis was joined by his son-in-law, W. Rufus Winstead, beginning what would ultimately become a four-generation family business.

The business was incorporated in 1972 and later bought by Rufus and his wife, Janice D. Winstead, in 1975. Dennis Winstead, the current owner and Rufus and Janice’s son, spent his youth helping his father and grandfather at the shop, doing jobs like putting hard-ware on wood overhead doors. In 2000, Dennis’ son, T.J. Winstead, joined the family business full time, marking four generations.

But it hasn’t been all ease and progress with Wilson Overhead Door. In 1999, the store was completely flooded by Floyd at its location on Beacon Street. After struggling back from the loss of equipment, office furniture and inventory, the Winsteads built a new office at their current location on Wooten Boulevard in 2001. In 2011, however, this building was completely destroyed by the tornado that tore through parts of Wilson in April.

By July of 2001, however, they had already rebuilt again and re-opened for business, deter-mined to continue serving Wil-son the way they have for the past 47 years... and counting.

They may be!Women live longer, so their money has to last longer. Women generally have fewer years in the workforce, taking time to be with their children. Women are less likely to receive pension income in retirement and may also receive lower Social Security payments when they retire, due to fewer years in the workforce.

The good news ... women know how to invest and grow their money because women tend to ask questions and stay the course. Even if you don’t currently manage your family’s finances, make sure you know as much about them as if you were managing the money yourself, because you may have to someday. We can help you understand your investment and insurance needs. Zynique Creations N Art Gallery is truly a store for local arts.

Opened in the fall of 2011 in downtown Wilson by owner Andrea Horton-Morton, the business is an explosion of creativity and color. It offers a variety of arts and crafts by An-drea herself, as well as many handmade crafts by other local art-ists, many of whom’s paintings and pottery are also on display both in the store’s gallery as well as its Facebook page. They also promote art shows in its gallery as well.

Zynique Creations also offers art supplies, which they will de-liver to your door, as well as three-hour art workshops on site.

In addition to the local crafts and arts, the store carries a great variety of popular clothing and products, such as Salt Life, Room It Up and Old Guys Rule.

Andrea is married to Steve Morton, owner of Morton Siding Company.

One of the oldest busi-nesses in the area, Wilson Hardware opened its doors in 1907 and, 105 years later, is still going strong.

Under the leadership of third-generation owner J. Bowie Gray, the “old-fashioned hardware store with a new twist” still offers a great selection of door locks, panic devices, toilet partitions, cook-ware, turkey and fish fryers, pot mendets, foot tubs, washboards, screws and all the tools and products for which old-fashioned hardware stores are known.

In 2011, Wilson Hardware added a sister store, ReCollections at Wilson Hardware — located directly beside the store at 114 E Nash Street — which carries a wide variety of antiques, collectibles, pottery and art and features the work of many local artists.

With the antique merchandise changing weekly, ReCollections has a great selection of dining room tables and chairs, book cases, side tables, game tables for bridge, single and double beds, wardrobes, mirrors and much more.

Deans Farm Market is so much more than just a farm or popular roadside produce market — it is an agricultural experience.

Open since 1965, Deans offers agritourism and a variety of educational activities depending on the season. Fall hayrides around the farm, pick-your-own strawberry fields in the spring and Santa’s workshop during the holidays are all a part of this Wilson tradition that allow customers of all ages to experience the farm in all its beauty.

At the market, you’ll find the same quality produce Deans has been grow-ing and delivering to Eastern North Carolina for almost 50 years. From sweet corn, potatoes, squash and other fresh vegetables to locally-canned honey, barrel molasses and preservatives, Deans has it all. You’ll even be able to pick up cooked collards and mustard salad while there. Deans Farm Market can handle larger bulk orders or small, individual purchases.

Whether you’re just picking up produce for dinner, spending a morn-ing picking strawberries or teaching a young person about the work of a traditional farm, you’ll want to “experi-ence” Deans Farm Market.

Dong’s Martial Arts School was established 41 years ago, though it has been specifically serving Wilson since 1995 — and under owner Master Matt Mercer’s leadership for the last ten years.

The school teaches traditional martial arts to students from age four to adults. At Dong’s, they teach a time-tested system designed by ninth-degree black belt Grand Master Dong, which helps to de-velop sound minds, strong bodies and traditional values.

Likewise, Dong’s Martial Arts School strives to be a positive force in the Wilson community by helping students to develop disciplined lifestyles and a set of practical skills that can be used in daily life.

Additionally, Dong’s believes in supporting the community through various charity and community service projects each year, such as a fundraising tourna-ments, an annual canned food drive for local soup kitchens and participation in Wilson’s annual production of The Nutcracker to raise money for the Wilson Preg-nancy Center.

Donnie Glover’s store, Interior Accents, has been a dependable, trusted and exhaus-tive resource for all interior design services and products for almost 30 years.

But his newest venture, Drapery & Bed-ding Decor, opened on June 20 just up the road from Interior Accents, seeks to com-plement the original business and better service the community with custom-made draperies and bed ensembles.

In a way, Glover says, they are not doing anything that they haven’t always done. Drapery & Bedding Decor is simply more focused and allows customers direct ac-cess to a vast collection of designer fabric in every price range and on-site sewing, a service rarely seen these days.

In addition to the extensive fabric lines, another thing Drapery & Bedding Decor is focusing on is its large line of shades and shutters — including Roman shades, roller shades, cellular shades, 2” wood blinds (or composition wood) and plantation shutters.

Drapery & Bedding Decor offers custom bedding, as well as a very nice line of comforters and coverlets, ready-made to take home immediately. Seeking furniture or accent pieces to finish off your custom bedroom ensemble? They have a wide variety of furniture, accessories, lamps, pictures, mirrors, and accent chests to choose from, as well as a large line of wood and metal drapery hardware available.

Professional designers are on staff to help you, whether you’re there for a single window treatment or enough for an entire home or office. Glover and his team have been designing the interiors of Wilson homes, banks, car dealerships and more for three decades and have the experience to get you what you want on your budget. According to Glover, “custom made” does not equal “expensive.” Having a customer walk out for much less than they would at a ma-jor store or outlet is a goal they always work toward.

All custom products are made here in Wilson and delivered promptly within the promised time frame.

So come see the newest kid in town. Unlike any other new business, this one is backed by decades of experience.

Quince has a full bar in the front of the restaurant that offers a cozy din-ing area along with specialty beers on tap an extensive wine collection from vineyards around the world. But don’t stop in the dining areas. Continue down the hall to Quince’s garden, which includes another full bar and live entertainment most weekends. RedPhish music is slowly and steadily making a name for itself in Eastern North Carolina as the music store to go to for quality name brands, expert service and internet-friendly prices. That name itself, RedPhish, is derived from the nicknames of owners Phillip and Melissa Jordan’s two daughters, Emily (Red) and Rachel (Phish).

The Jordans opened up the Wilson store in 2007 to complement their RedPhish Music stores in Rocky Mount, Goldsboro and Smithfield. Recently, Greenville became home to the RedPhish brand as well.

RedPhish carries brands such as Fender, Epiphone, Peavey, Pearl, Ludwig and Yamaha, among many others, with new stock arriving daily. They also install P. A. sys-tems and offer instrument repair.

As RedPhish continues to grow to new locations, they are commit-ted to being not only your “local” music store, but also your “favor-ite” music store.

With the exception of one employee, the entire business of Hope’s Furniture is run by the Glover family. Hope and Mike Glover started out 29 years ago buying antiques and furniture at auctions, eventually opening a new and used furniture store in Bailey then branching out into flea mar-ket work. Ultimately, the Glovers settled into their current 30,000 square foot building on Raleigh Road, and are joined in its operation by their two daughters, Amy Brewer and Tiffany Glover, who literally grew up in the family business, and their son-in-law, Ryan Brewer.

Customers love Hope’s Furniture because the Glovers focus on making everyone who shops there feel at home and like an extension of the family.

The expansive showroom holds furniture and home accessories for any room in the house and every person’s taste. Recently, Hope’s has added a Bemco mattress gallery to join the large selection of colorful lamps, pic-tures, mirrors, large custom fabric galleries by Edgecombe Furniture and Best Home Furnishings, unique accent pieces, 40+ complete bed-room sets and 50+ dinettes.

The Small Business Center at Wilson Community College is truly an un-tapped local resource for any person who is either looking to start a business or has already begun one and needs additional advice.

The single biggest misconception that locals have about the center is that it is for WCC students only. Free and confidential help is available to any one who requests it — student, citizen or current business owner.

The Small Business Center is the vision of the North Carolina Community College System, with centers at each college, and has been in place over 20 years. Because of this network, Pat Killette, director of the center at WCC, says that, in addition to our many local resources, they are able to use resources in other parts of the state to find business solutions in Wilson for cases in which there are no local experts.

All of the employees at the business centers are trained experts who receive constant continuing education courses to become better qualified. Last year, the Small Business Center assisted 78 Wilson-area businesses, some of which were start-ups, and ended up providing or saving 150 local jobs in the process. But even with all the recent success, the Small Business Center is eager for a larger load and be-lieves that the more business owners who seek help from the center, the more strong businesses we will have in Wilson County.

“We’re still the untold story in a way. It’s really a great resource. We’ve helped countless businesses over the years and are eager to help more. The economic benefits have a huge economic impact on our community in the form of both jobs and tax revenue. All it takes is a phone call.”

The rich history of Church-well’s Jewelers traces its origins back to a jewelry store established in 1905 in downtown Wilson by Mary Churchwell. The store, known for its bridal gifts, was later bought in the 1940s by Harold Seburn and later passed to his daughter and son-in-law, Marilyn and L.A. Bass. Seburn’s grandson, Anderson Bass, who has been with company since his graduation from college in 1991, carries on the tradition today. Bass, along with his father, began to custom-design eques-trian and nautical-themed jewelry to go along with their traditional jewelry designs, which they sold at horse shows and elite fishing tournaments. The move proved instrumental in shifting Churchwell’s focus toward a new cli-ent base outside of Wilson and even Eastern North Carolina. These beauti-ful designs, along with new, loyal customers, helped Churchwell’s expand and grow into the thriving destination — both in-store and online — it is today.

Churchwell’s current location fea-tures a 1,500-square foot showroom, including seven showcases from the original 1905 store, as well as upstairs and downstairs workshops.

The Piggly Wiggly stores in both Bailey and Elm City are part of a proud locally owned and operated tradi-tion. Both stores are owned by the Matthews Group, a family-run busines based out of Bailey that includes Butch and Lisa Matthews and their son Billy. The Matthews now own a handful of Piggly Wig-gly stores across Eastern North Carolina but still strive to keep their hometown roots in each location and treat every customer like an extention of their family.

Since purchasing the Bailey store in 1983 and the Elm City store in 2001, the Matthews have expanded both locations to accommodate their customers’ needs. At each store, they offer a bill payment center, Western Union services and fully-capable meat department, which features Blackwell Angus® beef — an item exclusive to Original Pig-gly Wiggly stores. At the Bailey store, they offer movie rentals as well.

Joey and Denise Barden purchased their ChemDry franchise nine years ago after researching the brand and figuring out that it was the perfect endeavor for them. That year, it was even ranked among the “Top 10” franchises to purchase in Forbes magazine. What ultimately sold them, they say, was the integrity of the brand and the company.

ChemDry uses a heated, carbonated, all-natural solution to clean carpet and upholstery. The solution offers superior cleaning power and dries in one or two hours — not days. It’s both soap and chemical free, making it “certified green” and safe for pets and people alike.

ChemDry is the largest carpet cleaning company in the world, with more than 4,000 locations globally. So when you need to clean your carpet effectively, efficiently and safely, take a hint from the Bardens and put your trust in the ChemDry brand.

Upon his graduation from Charles L. Coon High School in 1955, Dwight Lamm completed a cor-respondence course on radio and television, eager to learn about electronics and the increasingly popular demand for TV and stereos. His first repair shop was in the back bedroom of his house, but four shops and over half a century later, Dwight’s TV on Ward Boulevard is an area leader in home entertainment. With prices “just as low as the box stores” on all their products, Dwight’s still offers the personal touch.

And though technology has changed, Dwight’s has kept up. Just like the old days, Dwight’s still has a knowledgeable service department that will service everything they sell — in addition to other products as well. They’ll also offer you prompt, professional delivery, set-up and assistance for your entertainment center.

Dwight’s has an extensive line of Sony HDTVs and Panasonic HDTVs, including LED screen technology. The store also features a large selection of entertain-ment consoles, as well as other entertain-ment products like Blu-Ray and DVD players and wall-mounting equipment.

What began as primarily a Christmas gift shop, home to an assortment of stockings, Mark Roberts fairies and elves, Radko ornaments, Karen Didion Santa Clauses and custom bedding — among countless other seasonal items — has evolved into a varied and even more beautiful gift shop for all occasions year round.

Creations by Culbreth, established in downtown Wilson in 2009 by Culbreth Spivey, has a wide variety of birthday, graduation or home gifts: scented candles, ornate picture frames, luxurious soaps, designer handbags, stationery, totes, just to name a few.

The life of the store, however, goes back further than the brick-and-mortar space on Tarboro Street. Spivey has been traveling to holiday shows and sell-ing his gifts since 2004. He then created a full-service website where custom-ers in other states could purchase his sought-after items.

As was his plan, Culbreth is becom-ing a destination and Wilson-rooted brand in itself, with customers as far away as Illinois, Texas and New York excited to find so many unique and unexpected things in one little shop nestled in Eastern North Carolina.

Since opening the doors of her own dance studio in August of 2008, Steph- anie Stancil Sommerville has enjoyed consistent — if not rapid — growth. From a single-unit space in a com- mercial mall on Airport Boulevard, Stancil has expanded to three times that size, including the addition of a 2,000-square-foot ballroom, which she uses to host birthday parties, dances, wedding receptions and larger ballroom dancing classes.

Toe 2 Toe offers a variety of dance classes for all ages, from classical bal- let, pointe, tap, jazz, hip hop, lyrical, Mommy & Me and ballroom to even yoga, zumba, pilates and competitive classes. The studio also offers an an- nual community-wide production of The Nutcracker to benefit the Wilson Pregnancy Center.

Sommerville and instructor Sharon Stickwell are certified by the Nation-al American Ballet Curriculum and attend classes each year at Joffrey Ballet, Steps on Broadway, Broad- way Dance Center, The Alvin Ailey Theater and other New York studios to maintain their certification.

Although shopping can be fun for many people, for other folks it’s the exact opposite. That is because of the stress associated with picking just the right gift to please a friend or loved one. There is a way to make shopping for

those gifts easier and less stressful. The solution is to shop local.

Shop local: Find the most unique gifts and services

REWARDING GIFTS

The problem with many big chain stores is that they carry similar mer-chandise, much of which is actually manufactured and produced overseas. That does little to help the American economy.

It is also very unimaginative. People like getting real surprises for holidays, birthdays or anniversaries. If they get gifts that they see all the time on the shelves of a chain store, it can be a dis-appointment.

Anyone who needs a new sweater, blender or set of bath towels can cer-tainly buy those items for themselves. Also, many people feel obligated to buy gifts for certain people, like a boss, coworker or friend, but that is no rea-son to be boring and unimaginative.

SPECIAL PRODUCTS

Small mom-and-pop stores often have products you can’t find anywhere else. These type of stores are usually located in the downtown area of towns and cities, although they can also be found along the highway, on an ob-scure road or in a strip mall.

Local shops can be intensely focused on one particular gift, with good in-sight and advice about what to pur-chase. They have a niche market that they know exceptionally well.

Instead of trying to sell a little bit of everything, they typically concentrate on a special product or category such as candles, artwork or jewelry. This is because many small shops have prod-ucts with local connections that are made by local companies, local crafts-men and craftswomen or obtained

by local suppliers. Large chain stores need to buy in bulk at a discounted price so they can stock their multitude of stores across the country.

Small mom-and-pop stores, on the other hand, require a smaller amount of goods. They tend to form relation-ships with local artisans and people skilled in various trades such as iron work, metal work, jewelry making, painting, sculpting and sewing.

Because these people work for them-selves, rather than a large corporation, they can be very creative with their design ideas. The end result is a piece that is one-of-a-kind.

GOOD REPUTATION

Most mom-and-pop stores are a fix-ture in their community because they have been there for so long. Mom-and-pop stores build their reputation over many years. They can’t stay in business unless they offer the very best products and customer service, including unique gifts that are popular in your particular area.

The proprietors of the shops have a special bond with the community. Many local artisans will produce works that reflect the noteworthy heri-tage and cultural traditions of the re-gion. Another bonus to shopping in the local stores is that it helps to boost the local economy by keeping the money in the area.

Neighborhood stores also keep the towns vibrant and enable talented artisans to make a profit by doing what they love. Any time of the year is a great time to peruse local shops for unique gifts for others or even for yourself.

Every year, familiar chain stores bombard the public with announcements of big sales. These ads promise the lowest prices of the season on hot items that are sure to disappear from shelves at a rapid rate. Some of these stores draw crowds

out of small towns and into big stores that dwarf the small businesses that are found closer to home. When people go out of town to shop, local revenue is lost and the char-acter and vitality of a place is threatened.

Shop local: Preserve Wilson’s unique character

Local businesses are the heart of a community. In every town, there exists a street or group of streets lined with shops that cannot be found anywhere else. This unique collection of places to shop are part of what makes a town special.

Choosing out-of-town stores over these local treasures takes money out of the community and tells business own-ers that you prefer to spend your time in other areas.

HELPING THE TOWN

By doing your shopping locally, you bring both financial support and con-sumer faith back to area businesses. The money that you spend in your own backyard stays there rather than being funneled to a multi-national corporation. Simply put, when people support the businesses in a town, it benefits the town as a whole.

More revenue means that stores stay in business, which in turn preserves the vitality of a community. A bustling down-town shopping district will draw visitors as well as locals to experience the town’s unique nature.

With continued support, local busi-nesses can survive long enough to be-come legends in their own right. This enriches the history of the town and can aid in its growth by showing that there is a strong home town customer base.

The distinctive nature of small, local businesses means distinctive merchan-dise. A national chain may be able to offer you the must-have toy or item for your home, but only a local establish-

ment can bring items hand-crafted by artisans who live right in town. It would be hard for a chain store to match the quality of the cookies, pies, and cakes fresh from the local bakery.

PEOPLE YOU KNOW

The greatest treasures of the small businesses who bring all of these things to a community are the owners. Unlike the rushed and harried seasonal workers at big chain stores, owners and employ-ees of local shops are people you recog-nize from within the community.

This makes visiting their businesses more personal than a standard shopping trip. Staying local gives you an opportu-nity to establish relationships with shop owners who can come to know your preferences and will be able to help you more easily, leading to a relaxed, per-sonal shopping experience.

Many local business owners are also active in the town and nearby areas. The man who helped you pick out the perfect present for your niece may be the same person who puts out a fire at a neigh-bor’s house. The hairdresser could be the one overseeing the next big seasonal festival. By supporting the livelihoods of these people, you in turn support their ability to give back to the community.

Resisting the pull of out-of-town stores can be difficult, but the benefits of lo-cal shopping are worth staying close to home. Keeping money and consumer loyalty within the local economy helps to maintain the rich history and personality of a town and can help the community remain strong.

When it comes to working with antiques, you want some-one with the skill and experi-ence to make sure the job is done right. And with over 30 years of experience in antique restoration, furniture repair and refinishing, Stan Corbett has become one of the most trusted names around.

Corbett serves a wide variety of antique dealers, designers and decorators, collectors and homeowners. He also offers a showroom of furniture and spe-cialty boxes. Other services include architectural restoration, exterior door refinishing and fire and water damage restoration.

Recently many customers’ attentions have turned to lowering mattress heights due to the increased thicknesses of box springs and mattresses. Lowering mattresses and tightening bed rails and posts can often be accom-plished in the home with same day service.

No matter what your antique furniture may require, Stan Corbett has the knowledge and experience to make it new again.

They said it wouldn’t work. A pharmacy with a drive-up win-

dow was a novel idea for Wilson 20 years ago, when Michael and Janet Warren first pursued the idea.

The first financial institution they approached for a loan even told them it wouldn’t work. In fact, they advised the Warrens to try to get back any money they had already spent.

But the Warrens persevered, know-ing deep down that Wilson was ready for a new pharmacy that offered con-venience and good service. Ultimate-ly, they went elsewhere for a loan.

And it took a year or two for people to find them once they opened their doors on Tarboro Street, but once they did, Medicap Pharmacy grew and thrived. It turned out the drive-thru window wasn’t such a bad idea after all. Nearly every pharmacy in town — not to mention the country — has one now. The Warrens say that customers also appre-ciate the fact that they can park at the entrance and be in and out in just a few steps.

But the Warrens aren’t the only ones who have kept Medicap going on these years. They say that they are fortunate to have long-time employees that are extremely people-friendly and helpful. Their pharmacy technicians, Anita, Gwen and Margaret, are “what make the business hum,” and the delivery driver, Jameshia, brings a smile to everyone she meets.

Medicap concentrates mainly on prescriptions, but they also carry many common non-prescription items as well, including greeting cards. They also offer a convenient photo processor for quick digital prints and, like they have for 20 years, free deliv-ery on all prescriptions.

Pest control and entomological scholarship seem to be bred directly into members of the Smith family. And, after several generations, it has led their name and brand to become synonymous with the best in Eastern North Carolina pest control.

Clyde “Les” Smith, who modestly started Rid A Pest in the detached building of his Wilson home in 1972, was the son of Dr. Clyde F. Smith, the head of the Department of Entomology at N.C. State and a world famous researcher in the field.

After studying entomology himself at N.C. State, discovering his passion for the subject and working various jobs in the pest control field, Les Smith decided to start his own pest control business in Wilson based on the prin-cipals of honesty, integrity and higher education. And, 40 years later, those principals have paid off, with offices in Wilson and Morehead City and the consistent recognition of being voted #1 in customer satisfaction in each of their service areas.

Les Smith’s sons, Jamie and Lee, each studied entomology at N.C. State before ultimately returning to the family business. Jamie currently serves as vice president and general manager of Rid A Pest, as well as manager of the Wilson office, while Lee manages the Morehead City office and serves as the marketing coordinator and staff entomologist.

They insist that each technician that works for Rid A Pest continue the tradition of insect education, providing continuing education courses on a regular basis for the staff members during their employment. This ensures each customer that their home is serviced by the best and most knowledge-able technicians around.

Rid A Pest offers the full spectrum of professional pest control services, including the prevention and control of any pest problem.

Today, with the three thriving offices in Eastern North Carolina and 40 employees among them, Rid-A-Pest — and more specifically, the Smith family — has earned its distinction as “the most trusted name in pest control.”

The origins of Wilson landmark Womble Hardware & Tackle, Inc. begin in 1943, when J.M. Womble opened W. W. Furniture & Appliance Co. with his friend and busi-ness partner J.A. Williams, Sr.

As years went by, Womble’s children, J.M. “Jimmy” Womble, Jr. and Constance Daniels, eventually took over their father’s business but continued to work with J.A. Williams until his death in 1985. And in 2001, current owner Penny Womble purchased the business from her father, Jimmy, which she now runs with her adult children, Allyson Moye and Jimmy Miller.

In the early days, W. W. Furniture & Appliance Co. sold household furniture, appli-ances and linoleum rugs. But as time passed, Glidden paints and fishing tackle were added and the furniture and appliances were ultimately phased out. For 30 years, the store also served as the contract agent for the N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles, registering and issuing N.C. license plates and transfers.

The name of the business was finally changed in 2005 to reflect the current nature of its operations, though the original name’s lettering is still visible on the building, remind-ing the family and customers of its rich history downtown. In 2006, the Womble family also acquired another historical downtown Wilson landmark, P. L. Woodard and Co., which dates back to 1898 and sells a variety of lawn equip-ment, animal feeds, garden plants and seeds, fertilizers, insecticides and more.

The nearly 50-year tradition of J.C. Harris Cadillac can easily be summed up as a dealership that gives “a per-sonal touch.”

It’s the way brothers J.C. Harris, Jr., and Richard Harris, describe the dealer-ship that their father founded in 1963 on Lodge Street downtown, and it’s the way they execute every operation today.

That “personal” sentiment can be found in the massive amount of loyal, repeat customers that will only pur-chase their cars at J.C. Harris. It can be heard in the lack of an automated phone system, because the Harris fam-ily believes that anyone calling should talk to a person instead of recorded op-tions. And it can be witnessed in places like their auxiliary showroom, where each Tuesday and Thursday afternoon, from 2 to 5 p.m., the room is filled with members of the Wilson Duplicate Bridge Club playing bridge.

The Harris family, and their staff of knowledgeable sales-men and experienced auto technicians, could list a long string of dealership accolades — of which they’ve received countless on both state and national levels — but it wouldn’t be the way they measure their success, and it would be untrue to the spir-it surrounding their relationship to each customer. Their love for the customers is obvious in how they treat them on the lot, but also in how they treat them after driving away. Each customer knows that they can call Richard or J.C. personally to help them.

J.C. Harris Cadillac moved to their current location on Ward Boulevard in 1978, to a 23,000 square-foot building on five acres of land, after initial growth forced them into something bigger. But this is where they’re going to stay. They like being close to downtown and like being a part of the Barton community, among other things.

They prefer to stay where they are, doing it their own way — with a personal touch, one customer at a time.

The Wilson Times Co., is the offspring of the Primi-tive Baptist publication, Zion’s Landmark, established in 1867 by Elder P. D. Gold, pastor of the Wilson Primitive Baptist Church.

Gold founded the P. D. Gold Publishing Company and his son, John D. Gold, later joined him in the company, which published Zion’s Landmark and operated a job printing shop.

In 1896, John D. Gold founded The Wilson Times, a weekly newspaper, which later became a semi-weekly, and then, in 1902, became The Wilson Daily Times.

Gold remained active until 1946, when the news-paper was leased by H.D. Brauff with an option to buy. Even after his retirement, Gold visited The Times frequently and continued to take an interest in its progress and expansion. His daughter, Elizabeth Gold Swindell, was the paper’s business manager. In 1954 Brauff offered Mrs. Swindell a one-fifth interest to continue in that position. She accepted.

Two years later, Mrs. Swindell announced her pur-chase of the paper from the Brauff family. This trans-action made Elizabeth Swindell the sole owner of the paper, which she served as editor and publisher until her death in 1983.

In 1957 Morgan Paul Dickerman II of Wallingford, Conn., joined his mother-in-law as associate publish-er. Beginning in 1959, DIckerman assisted in three major expansions of the paper, and in 1967 he and Mrs. Swindell purchased an adjacent 40,000 square foot building and installed a new 40-page capacity offset press.

Dickerman remained associate publisher and general manager of The Daily Times until his death in July 16, 1974. At that time Mrs. Swindell was joined by her daughter, Margaret Dickerman, in overseeing the operations of the paper.

Morgan Paul Dickerman III joined the company as vice president in 1979. He was named president and publisher on Mrs. Swindell’s death. In 1983 The Wilson Daily Times moved to its present location, occupying a $2.6 mil-lion 30,000 square-foot building that included the latest in electronic editing and classified systems, as well as expanded facilities for all departments.

The Wilson Times Company has evolved quite a bit since it’s P.D. Gold Publishing Co. days, but we are proud to be one of the few family-owned newspapers remaining in the state. Today, the Wilson Times Co. prints The Wilson Times, has www.wil-sontimes.com, The Wilson County Phone Directory and continues the Gold Press tradition of publishing books.

For over 40 years, people have trusted the Medlin name for quality pre-owned ve-hicles in Eastern North Carolina. The tradition was initiated by Jack Medlin, Sr., whose sons, Jack Jr. and Jeff, later followed suit in 1994 when they started a new Hyundai dealer-ship in Rocky Mount, where they also sold quality pre-owned vehicles.

While that dealership grew and thrived, the brothers partnered together again in 2000 to buy a dealership in Wilson, which quickly became Medlin Buick GMC.

This new dealership also thrived, due directly to its reputation of straight dealing and its commit-ment to take care of its customers on both new and used vehicles. In 2005, the Mazda franchise was added to the well-established Medlin brand in Wilson.

Medlin has always recognized the importance of giving back to the community that supports it. The dealership has been extremely commit-ted to the fundraising efforts of many local churches, in the sponsorship of youth sports teams and organizations such as the Wilson Rotary, Wil-son Shrine Club, Rocky Mount Shrine Club, American Cancer Society Relay for Life and several other organizations by sponsoring Hole-in-One golf tournaments.

In April of 2011, Medlin Buick GMC Mazda suffered tornado damage to its showroom, detail shop and over 180 cars. Though they were able to clean up and reopen in just a few days, Medlin has taken this opportunity to overhaul the dealership. They appreciate the patience of each customer as they work through the redesign process, but are excited to build upon Medlin’s growing tradi-tion in Wilson and make it even better for the years to come.

“We appreciate the support that the Wilson community has given to us over the years. We also know that we must continue to earn that support by providing you with a sales and service experience that is second to none, along with remaining active in our com-munity. That is our mission.”

Hubert Vester Toyota Scion’s track record already speaks for itself. Only in operation since 2003, the dealer-ship is already a six-time winner of the Toyota’s President’s Award, Toyota’s most prestigious distinction — awarded to dealers who excel in sales, service and, most of all, cus-tomer satisfaction.

Hubert Vester Toyota Scion is Wil-son’s “#1 volume dealer” and has a strong and committed sales and ser-vice staff — top ranked in customer satisfaction — with many years of experience meeting their customers’ needs. In fact, their Customer Care for Life program will keep your mind at ease any time you need to return to the lot for years to come.

But Hubert Vester is not only committed to you on the lot. They are also committed to caring for both you and your car once you drive away. In addition to a full-service rental car department, a free shuttle service anywhere in Wilson and free loaner car program, Hubert Vester will provide free delivery for all new and used vehicle purchases to anywhere in N.C., serving S.C., and Va. Vehicle deliveries around the Raleigh, Cary, Wake Forest, Goldsboro, Rocky Mount and Greenville areas are quite popular.

Need to service your vehicle? No problem. Hubert Vester’s service facility offers state of the art equipment, as well as Toyota factory trained and Toyota Master Techni-cians.

So come by the showroom on Raleigh Road Parkway, en-joy the free Wi-Fi and speak with a friendly, knowledgeable salesman about what Hubert Vester can do to help you. Whether you are searching for a new vehicle, an acces-sory to dress up your current vehicle, or a service to keep your Toyota in top condition, the folks at Hubert Vester always look forward to serv-ing you.
