VEGETABLESArtichoke: Artichokes will see a drop in market price for the coming week. Projected volumes look to be on the up-and-up, but holiday demand will likely keep markets strong. Long stems are projected to be available in mid-November.

Asparagus: Peruvian grass quality has been excellent. There has been plenty of air grass available to cover all our needs. I expect everything to continue the same through November.

Bicolor Corn: We will have corn available from Georgia through the week ending November 13th. Florida is the next area that will begin harvest. Florida is predicting the week of November 16th to begin harvest. Steady market price with good quality is predicted.

Broccoli: Projected broccoli volume from both Santa Maria and Salinas is holding steady. Good volume coming out of Mexico is keeping the overall market at bay for the time being. Both 14’s and crowns will remain unchanged in price for next week. There-after, we expect upward market pressure as holiday demand will start to affect the market.

Brussel Sprouts: Brussels sprouts will see a slight market price reduction moving into next week. Overall, supply is stable and meeting demand, but expect a more active market as we ap-proach Thanksgiving.

Cauliflower: Cauliflower will see a nice market price reduction for the coming week. Currently, ready-to-harvest fields are sitting nicely in the preferred 12ct size spec. Take advantage now, as shippers advise this market to be short lived as holiday demand

and Yuma transition starts to enter the picture.

Celery: Celery will hold steady as we move into next week. Supply is average for the time being. Oxnard is expected to start around 11/15 and overlap with Salinas to help support holiday demand. However, preliminary reports indicate and industry shortage of over 220k cases of celery for Thanksgiving. We will continue work-ing with our suppliers from now through the pull to stay ahead of the curve as much as possible to help minimize effect at retail.

Cucumbers: Many areas are shipping. We are finding the best quality in Nogales and markets will stay weak or slightly decline.

Eggplant: Supplies are fair. Market price is back up with many areas finishing. Light supplies from Coachella are starting along with Nogales. Market price will decline and availability will im-prove in the coming weeks.

Green Cabbage: Wisconsin is finished this week. Texas and Geor-gia are shipping. Market to remain steady or slightly decline.

Green Beans: Now shipping from Florida. Georgia beans are done for the season. Quality is very good and this week supplies are excellent. The week of 11/9 and 11/16 they are anticipating tight supply. Some fields will have to be skipped because of past rain damage and demand is always very high for the Thanksgiving period. Prices are expected to be high.

GREENS/MISC. VEGETABLESAnise will remain unchanged in market price and supply.

Beets will see a slight increase in market price, with fair supply overall.

Bok Choy and Napa will both see price increases due to overall supply. The high market on both items is expected to last through the Yuma transition.

Bunched Spinach will drop in price once again as more product enters the market.

Cilantro will be unchanged and remain healthy in supply and lower than average in price.

Daikon will see a minor drop in price, with fair supply overall.

Kohlrabi will jump once again and remains extremely tight. Gaps in supply should be expected indefinitely.

2

Leeks will remain unchanged in market price and supply.

Parsley Both Italian and curly parsely will see moderate price increases due to overall supply. The high markets are expected to hold through the Yuma transition.

Green Onions: Green onions remain tight due to an unseasonably high amount of rainfall in Mexican growing regions. Shippers are not reporting and Hurricane related supply issues at this time, but upcoming holiday demand will likely keep the overall market strong.

Green Pepper: The southeastern area of the USA is harvesting with Florida just starting. Quality has been fair. Coachella started harvesting and we will move ot load there as soon as availability improves. Price will increase, however quality will be much better from this area.

HYDRO: Cucumbers: Picking daily with normal production.Beefsteak Tomatoes: Great quality.

Tomatoes on the Vine: Great quality with excellent sizing.

Peppers: Good quality with steady production.

LETTUCE: Green Butter Lettuce will increase in price due to lower forecast-ed yields.

Green Leaf and Red Leaf will remain unchanged for the coming week. Green still holds a slight premium over red in terms of price.

Iceberg Lettuce is beign sourced 100% out of Huron. Market price on iceberg will remain unchanged and on the high side. Shippers are advising that iceberg will be snug through the Thanksgiving holiday. Transition to the desert is currently being projected for the second week of November.

Red Butter and Red Romaine will see price increases with fair supply overall.

Romaine Romaine hearts will edge up in price, whereas 24ct romaine will be unchanged. All romaine items will retain a high market cost and be in limited supply through the Yuma transition.

ONIONS: There have been minimal changes in the onion market as we move closer to the Thanksgiving holiday. Demand has been light, but that is expected to change over the next week. We could possi-bly see a short-term uptick in pricing. Following the inital push for the holiday season, demand will dictate pricing as we move toward Christmas. Typically, demand exceeds supplies during the holday time frames as shipment schedules are shorter and can’t keep up with the volume of orders. This often results in a premium price on the onions that are able to be packed.

Sweet Onions: We are featuring both California Panoche Onions and NW Heavenly Sweets both with good quality and brix. Preuvi-an Onions are starting to clear, but the crop estimates are down considerably for past years and pricing is 20% higher than last year at this time. We will see our first arrivals of Peruvian Onions next week.

POTATOES: Russets: Demand for russet potatoes continues to be slow throughout the country on the smaller sizes. The slow demand is causing prices to remain the same, and in some areas, prices have been dropping. Demand for larger sized russet potatoes is slightly tighter due to the slower consumer market. This is believed to be a short-term problem as we approach the Thanks-giving holiday, when consumer demand increases.

Idaho: Markets unchanged.

Reds: Over the past week, demand for red potatoes has been moderate and the market remains steady. Thanksgiving business is fast approaching with many promotional opportunities avail-able. Quality reports are good and the prolonged nice weather has allowed growers in the Valley to finish harvesting.

Golds: Pricing and demand for yellow potatoes remains very steady with product available in all shipping areas.

Specialty: Product and demand for white potatoes remains focused on both east and west coasts. Availability for fingerling potatoes remains high in all shipping areas. Now is the time to include fingerlings in your seasonal promotions. We carry both Tasteful Selections (always new crop California) potatoes - fin-gerlings and 2 bites. We also have Little Potato Company value added potatoes with seasoning (both roaster/grillers and micro-

wave).

Red / Yellow Peppers: Red and yellow have become extremely tight and will be until Coachella can get some good volume going in the next coupld weeks. Market price will continue to stay high.

Snow Peas / Sugar Snap Peas: Peruvian supplies are mostly done. Guatemala quality is good, but supply is tight and prices remain high. Supplies should increase in about 2 weeks.

Sweet Potatoes: We are now in the new crop Mississippi/Loui-siana Beauregard variety for US#1 and Jumbos within the next week. New Crop California Jersey Sweets and Red Garnets are available now. We have prebook specials on bin Sweets - 1/2 US#1 and 1/2 JBO’s. Great promotional price!

TOMATOES:Florida: Rounds in Florida are starting with limited volume and there are some grape tomatoes available as well. Markets are tight on these items. We expect that Romas in Immokalee, Florida, will get started in the next 4-5 weeks. Roma markets also remain tight and will stay that way for at least a couple of weeks.

Mexican: Markets remain active on cherry and grapes. Volume is starting to pick up. Romas are expected to come into heavy availability, mostly on smaller sizes. We have seen a lot of issues with quality due to rain.

Variety Peppers: Rains in Mexico from the hurricane a few weeks ago significantly harmed variety peppers loading in Texas at least for the short term. Markets are climbing and will remain high for the next couple weeks.

Zucchini / Yellow Squash: Nogales is harveseting with excellent quality and supplies on zucchini and yellow squash also. Market price will remain steady.

VALUE ADDEDCabbage: Green supplies are better, but still tight industry wide.

We are working with many sources east and west to secure as much cabbage as possible. Red supplies are better in the east. Quality is good.

Dried Cranberries: Now available.

Dried Mangoes: Now available.

Dried Plums: Now available. Flame Raisins: Available late November.

Iceberg Lettuce: We look to be in good supply as we continue to transition down to Yuma. We will finish up VA iceberg harvest in Salinas this week. All VA will come out of Huron next week with a tenative start date of 11/9 in Yuma. Quality in Huron is good for the most part. Very light trace of salt and pepper showing up and a trace of long core.

Leaf Lettuce: Estimated Yuma state dates - Green- 11/9, Red- 11/12, and Butter- 11/20. We have good supplies and overall quality for the week on green, red, and butter. We continue to watch out for seeders on green and red as well as over compact and internal burn on butter. The first Yuma plantings are a little behind target start up. We will and continue to montior and update the situation as the picture becomes clearer.

Mature Kale: Pulling out of the Salinas area. Quality is good. We have normal supplies.

Organic Earthbound Farm: Romaine hearts are mainly loading out of Unikoll and will be short for the next 3 weeks. As we transi-tion growing regions, we will be limited on romaine hearts 12/3 for the next 3 weeks. We don’t anticipate being as short on chopped romaine salads. With the wet weather we’ve seen, we could run into some issues with Spinach and Arugula as they are the most delicate of the tenderleafs. All other salads should be good.

Radicchio: Supplies are good. Quality is good.

Romaine Lettuce: Estimated Yuma start dates - Romaine -

11/14-11/16. We continue to get hammered by warmer than normal growing conditions throughout the Salinas Valley. We are experiencing advancing challenges with seeders, twisting and ribbyness across all remaining Salinas Valley romaine acreage and field yields are deteriorating week over week. Expect varying %’s of approx. 1-3” seeders in cartons and hearts along with some twisting and excessive rib material as we work through field challenges the next 2 weeks. Also, head and heart size/length will be down from previous weeks.

Snap Peas: Are supposed to improve next week, hoping around 80% of normal volume and then hopefully even better the follow-ing week.

Snow Peas: Still going to be tight this week and next at around 75% of normal volume.

TENDERLEAF:Spinach: Conventional supplies are good. We are pulling out of the Yuma valley. All of the supplies are going to be coming out of Yuma.

Spring Mix: Spring Mix Conventional product in Salinas is com-pleted. Some combination beds are all that remain in Salinas. We have good volumes in Yuma starting the first full week of the desert. Quality has been good and we have no major issues with lettuces at this point.

FRUITAVOCADOS: The avocado market is very weak at the moment, but we expect to

see pricing start to rise in the next 2-3 weeks as it has historical-ly. There was virtually no effect on avos from the hurricane.

Florida Green Skin Avocados: Supplies extremely limited and very hit or miss made worse by quarantine. Blueberries: Prices have started to ease this week as production finally starts to improve. Peru has limited product being flown. Argentina has recovered from the rains and hail in some of the growing regions 2 weeks ago. Arrivals have still been somewhat sporadic, especially on 6oz. Argentina is projecting volumes to be down up to 40% compared to previous seasons. Chile has also started shipping small quantites by air. Mexico is starting to cross product, however, rains have delayed the picking and it has pushed the harvest out to next week. Product overall has been limited with high prices. We are finally seeing some relief in both quantities and price this week.

Cantaloupe: First Guatemalen fruit of the season will unload this week. Mostly big sizes available. The majority of the boats will arrive for November 16th week. They anticipate very good quality and a spread of sizes for beginning on the 16th. There are still a lot of domestic cantaloupe available as well as for the next few weeks Athenas are available in South Florida. They can pick in bins or cartons. Prices are reasonable.

Carton Coconuts: Up and down slightly in production, but shouldn’t be enough to affect our needs.

Cranberries: We are now in full swing on cranberries. We will be supplying the last portion of our cranberries before Thanksgiving in a poly bag to give stores the option to freeze them after Thanks-giving.

Dragon Fruit: There will be nothing until 2 weeks when they have one more picking and then probably will be done for the season.

Grapefruit: We are now full swing on Texas grapefruit. We will see a smaller sizing profile for most of this season due to the high temps they had in the growing region this summer.

Grapes: Another raound of showers has hit the grape producing

russdaviswholesale.com • 800.332.7104 • crazyfreshproduce.com 5

regions in California during the front part of this week. This may cause projected finish dates to, once again, adjust to earlier dates. The majority of red grapes shipped from California this week will be Crimsons, though some shippers are still finishing up on proprietary varieties. Autumn Kings remain atop the list of green varieties being shipped this week, and they should carry us through the end of the season. Supplies on Autumn Royals have become very tight, with only a few weeks left on this variety. Or-ganic grapes remain tight as we transition into our final varieties, Autumn Kings and Crimsons. Some Peruvian fruit has already hit the ports, primarly Red Globes with a few Crimsons available as well.

Honeydew: Honeydews continue to be lighter in supply with sizing peaking on large fruit. Weather events earlier in the season have affected the quality of Mexican fruit, and the occasional rain that we keep receiving in Arizona is also causing the quality to be av-erage at best. Look for ‘dews to remain limited for the duration of the fall deal. Imports will start mid/late November out of Central America into the Southeast.

Lemons: We are finally into new crop lemons, and we will see the market start to loosen over the next few weeks.

Limes: Currently the limes are loading out of Vera Cruz and Jalisco, Mexico. We will be loading out of these regions of Mexico for the next 3 months. All sizes are available, and we should see a steady market on limes.

Mangos: Brazilian Tommy Atikins mangos are winding down. They are still firm product and the market is reasonable. Primarily small sizes 10/12/14ct are available for the last couple weeks of the season. Ecuador mangos are now available : Hadens, Tommys, and Ataulfos. They are slightly higher money, but will probably ease in the next week or so. The fruit fly quarantine keeps expanding geography, which is bringing a faster close to some items than initially thought.

Navels and Clementines: California Navel oranges have started, and we will be into them starting this weekend.

PAPAYAS: Solo Papayas: Supplies are decent enough to cover demand at this time.

Caribbean Red Papayas / Maradol Guatemalan weather is being blamed for extremely short conditions. Belize has slightly better volume, but not enough to fill demand. Mexico has been able to fill the gaps so far.

Persimmons: Domestic persimmons are packing out at a steady pace. We have a 20/22ct single layer available, with VF packs available by special request only.

Pineapple: Pineapple still remains extremely tight with no ad volumes available until we have our first ad volume available the week before and of Thanksgiving.

Pomegranates: Wonderful variety pomegranates are in full swing! The crop outlook for the Wonderful variety season re-mains favorable, with most shippers projecting to have quality fruit available through early to mid-January. The larger 26ct and smaller 36ct are by far the most popular sizes in the Midwest market. Due to very little overall demand for 30/32ct, this size will discontinue when current inventory is sold through.

Raspberries: Overall quality is adequate with seasonal supplies. Mexican supplies have increased with the cleanup from the hurri-can. California has experienced very warm days and nights which is causing quality issues. Prices should be stable for the next 2-3 weeks.

Starfruit: Supplies will be shortening and prices are increasing.

Strawberries: California fruit volume is non-exxistent this week. The northern regions have finished their season with the rain events over the weekend and Monday. Santa Maria growers are not picking due to quality. Oxnard has started with some new crop fruit, but demanding high prices for very little fruit. Mexican shippers are hoping to start picking and crossing fruit by the end of the week. Hurricane Patricia damage has started to clean up. Florida anticipates starting around the 16th of November. Hang on; we’re in for a couple bumpy weeks.

Stone Fruit: Domestic stone fruit season is all but finished, but there are a few red plums available to ship. First arrivals of Chilean stone fruit should happen at the very end of December or early January.

WATERMELON: They have received heavy rains in Mexico, and the watermelon market will remain strong with the heavy rains effecting the supplies in the next several weeks.

Mini Watermelon The market will remain strong out of Mexico un-til the offshore melons arrive. The heavy rains have also effected the supplies on the personal watermelon, and we will see this over the next several weeks. Offshore melons will not start arriving until late November.

ORGANICLook for organic bulk and bagged satsumas next weekend.

Organic Bagged Avocados: Will be gapping for two weeks.

Organic Berries: All organic berries are extremely tight and will be this way for the remainder of the year.

Organic Blueberries: Not much out there for organic blueberries from Argentina and quality is terrible. Hopefully be in better shape in two weeks.

Organic Cherry and Grape Tomatoes: Very low volume and high price. Price should come down as the volumes increase in Novem-ber. Should have promotable volumes from December on.

Organic Grapefruit: We have Star Ruby from California. Very sweet, very good!

Organic Kiwi: We have a bit of New Zealand kiwi left and Califor-nia coming in.

Organic Mangoes: We are out for maybe a month when Ecuador-ian Tommy Atkins are ready.

Organic Melons: Honeydew and mini watermelon are coming at the end of the week. Cantaloupe will be next week.

Organic Oddball Potatoes: Russets, reds, and yellows are all available.

Organic Turmeric: Done for the season. There may be more avail-able in January from Hawaii.
