from the editorWelcome to the April issue of LocalReach Bridgwater. Despite the small flutterings of snow in March, Spring is definitely in the air, and with Daffodils and green shoots poking up through the ground, and the days getting longer with lighter mornings and evenings, I’m sure I’m not the only one who’s been thinking about what to do in the garden in the coming months.

There’s plenty in this issue from North Petherton Gardening Club, Bridwater Flower Club and The Walled Gardens of Cannington, as well as an article from Nick Carter, Somerset Waste Partnership – giving you plenty of ideas for your gardens or patio and balcony pots and plants.

I hope you find all the information useful, and please keep sending in your details about Bridgwater’s societies, clubs and fundraising events, so we can help you to promote them in our local community.

Until next time, Catherine - Community Editor.

Whether for flowers or vegetables, gardening offers Bridgwater families many ways to cut waste, save money and enjoy fresh air and exercise. You could start or improve your composting – at least 77,000 of us in Somerset have a compost bin – or reuse waste to enhance gardening.

Greener Gardening is April’s theme in Somerset’s Green Routine waste prevention campaign, which offers simple ways for people to save money, resources and time. Local Compost Champions are happy to help you get the mix – carbon and nitrogen, brown and green – just right.

Keen on grow-your-own? Somerset Community Food has partnered with Garden Organic to help volunteers become Master Gardeners and spread the word. With improving

weather, now is the time to try growing some veg in your garden or allotment. Only have a yard? Try pots. Only have a window box? Then herbs are the answer to spice up your cooking!

Could you compost more? Use all you can for the bedding - fruit and veg peelings, egg shells, coffee grounds and tea bags, and even a little shredded cardboard.

Have family fun with greener gardening activities; help the kids turn old drinks cartons into bird feeders or grow seedlings in yogurt pots. For plenty more ideas and advice, and monthly mailings of tips and tools, check Somerset Waste Partnership’s Green Routine pages: www.somersetwaste.gov.uk.

For those able to do a bit more, there will be training in

food skills on Saturday 6 April, in Taunton, to help families save up to £50 a month – details on the website.

By Nick Carter, Senior Communications Officer, Somerset Waste Partnership.

How green is your gardening?

The club held its first flower arranging demonstration of 2013 in March, with demonstrator Lynn Hayes from Bristol. The demonstration title was ‘My Heroes’, and Lynn gave a brief history of different aspects of Bridgwater. Her arrangements depicted the Town Bridge, the Castle remains, Docks and the woollen trade, and the completed demonstration was a Wedding design which could have been for St. Mary’s Church! Many foliages were used, plus red Carnations and Roses, Pink Roses, Lilies and Alstromeria, Purple Liatris, White Carnations, Chrysanthemums and Lilies.

The club holds monthly demonstrations on the second Tuesday of the month, with a different

demonstrator each time. Visitors are most welcome (£5 per person), so why not go along to the next demonstration on Tuesday 9 April, at Westfield Church Hall, West Street, Bridgwater at 7.30pm. You do not have to be able to arrange flowers; just go along to relax and watch. A raffle is held for the arrangements which are completed during the evening - you never know you might be lucky and win one to take home! The club hope to see some new people – everyone is welcome.

The South West Area to which the club belongs, is having an Area Day on 21 June, at the Tacchi Morris Centre, Monkton Heathfield. Tickets can be bought through the club.

Haygrove were represented by five teams at the Hockey County Cup Finals which were held at Millfield on Friday 1 March. The Year 8 boys, who met a more experienced team from Fairlands Middle School, dominated the first half, and the majority of the second, but at 0-0 at full time, the game went to penalty strokes. After 5 strokes each, with the score 2-2, it was decided that the two teams would share the trophy. So the boys are joint County Champions and received a gold medal!

The final game of the day featured the Year 11 boys, and old adversaries - Haygrove v Chilton Trinity. The boys stepped up to play probably their best game of the season, with stirling performances from the whole team. The Haygrove defence remained rock solid despite continued - and desperate - attacks from the opposition, with the final score 2-0 to Haygrove. It was a fitting end to their County Cup campaign - the team which won the trophy as Year 10s are now County Champions as Year 11s!

Would you walk over hot coals for charity? Pentathlon Carnival Club, in association with Firewalker.co.uk and North Petherton RFC are giving you the opportunity to do just that, by walking on fire!! The charity event will take place on Friday 26 April from 7pm at NPRFC, Beggars Brook, North Petherton.

Participants will attend a seminar on the art of firewalking and will learn some of the history and theories surrounding it. You will see the fire built and lit in preparation for the walk, and then be invited to take the challenge.

All participants must be aged 18 or over, be in good general

health and must pre-register. Call Mark on 07545499826 or email [email protected] for a full information pack.

There will also be a barbeque, bar and live music from The Thatchers from 9.30pm. All clubs/charities/groups and spectators welcome – free entry.

Malta Trip for ScoutsThirteen scouts - seven boys and six girls - from the 1st Bridgwater (St. George’s) Wembdon Scout Group are visiting Malta as part of the Twinning Association, and have been busy fundraising to help with the costs of the trip. Activities have included bag packing at local supermarkets, selling quiz sheets and collecting second-hand clothing which has then been sold on.

positive BirthThis group provides a supportive environment for women to discuss positive birth and share experiences, with the aim of normalising positive birth.

“Whatever you do, don’t wear new boots!”“I’ve got new boots!” fretted Cadet Lance Corporal

Charlie Fouracres, 14, from Glastonbury Platoon, Somerset Cadet Battalion (The Rifles) Army Cadet Force, as she prepared for the first day of Cosford/Nijmegen Training on Salisbury Plain.

For Army Cadets, Cosford and Nijmegen are considered synonymous with sore feet, blisters, exhaustion and pain! Road marching may sound easy but the old hands know that it is anything but. The RAFWARMA (Royal Air Force Walking And Road Marching Association) two day marches based at DCAE Cosford, and the Nijmegen four day marches held in the Netherlands, are, for cadets, considered the ultimate test of fitness, determination, courage, teamwork, mind over matter - and leadership.

For Recruits Victoria Lane, 13, and Nicola Parkins, 14, from Bridgwater Platoon, this was their first time on the Cosford event. When asked what prompted them to enter, Nicola said that she entered, “So that I can meet new people and make new friends.” Victoria said that she, “Wanted to prove that I can accomplish something hard, particularly as I’m quite small!” Five cadets from Bridgwater Platoon took part, making a good basis for a strong team. Under the steady hand of Captain Bruce Rodgers and the rest of the supervising team, the cadets benefitted fully from the training and are now keen to become involved in the main teams.

At the core of the training is the building of a strong team spirit; each team marches at the speed of the smallest, slowest team member. For all cadets, competing at Cosford is the first goal. Without completing the march within the stated time they will not be allowed to enter the Nijmegen Marches. Historically, Somerset's Army Cadets have always trained hard for the marches and as a result have always done exceptionally well. Somerset's Army Cadets regularly perform better than many teams drawn from the British, Dutch, German, American and Canadian regular forces! This is the eleventh year of their involvement in these events, and ‘Train Hard, Fight Easy’ is their motto.

The brand new swimming pool at Chilton Trinity was officially opened by Cllr Gill Slocombe, Chairman of Sedgemoor District Council (SDC) and Charlie Attwood, English 100m Breaststroke record holder (from Bridgwater), at an opening ceremony on the 1 March. Bridgwater Amateur Swimming Club and St. Mary’s Bridgwater Brownie group were also on-hand to be the first to test out the new facilities.

Cllr Gill Slocombe said: “I am so pleased that this great facility has a young and inspirational local swimmer involved in the opening ceremony. Sedgemoor District Council and our partners are proud of the investment made to secure a swimming provision within Bridgwater. We hope generations to come, from across Sedgemoor, enjoy using the facilities to have fun and take part in a healthy and active lifestyle.”

Bridgwater Swimming Club Chairman, Don Symes, said: “This is a tremendous day for the community in Bridgwater and a milestone for the swimming club. We are pleased to be working with 1610 and SDC to offer swimming development, and the opportunity for competitive swimming to the local community, from the new pool. This fantastic facility will enable the club to implement its plans to increase membership and return to top flight competitive swimming.”

SDC have invested £6.3million in the new pool and café project which includes a 25m 6-lane main pool and 13m by 7m learner/training pool. The café, with seating for around 80 customers,

includes American style booths, breakfast bar and traditional table seating.

The current timetable, available online at www.sedgemoor.gov.uk runs until the 14 April. The new pool timetable, from 15 April, will have some slight changes, so please remember to take a look nearer the time. Please contact Trinity Sports and Leisure direct on 01278 429119 in relation to customer feedback, the timetable, swimming lessons, and transport to and from the centre.

Church Street, Cannington, Somerset, Ta5 2Ha01278 655042

The Walled Gardens are situated in the village of Cannington and lie within the grounds of a medieval priory. The buildings and gardens have a long history and have always played an important part in the life of the local community.

First established in about 1138, by nearby Lords of Stogursey, the manor and church was later given by Robert De Courcey as the main endowment for a house of Benedictine nuns. It is said there is a network of tunnels leading from the Court to various spots in the village so that the nuns and nearby monks could meet in secret, and over the years many local stories have survived concerning ghostly visitations by nuns.

Since then, Cannington Court has been a Roman

Catholic industrial school for boys, Somerset Farm Institute, Cannington College and as it is now, part of Bridgwater College’s Cannington Centre. Since becoming part of Bridgwater College, there has been significant redevelopment of the Walled Gardens, and in 2009, they were officially opened by HRH the Earl of Wessex, Prince Edward.

The gardens have achieved the accreditation of Quality Assured Visitor Attraction from VisitEngland and are a beautiful treasure, with tea rooms, a plant shop and gift shop as well, (which you don’t need entry to the Gardens to visit). With many events throughout the year, the gardens are perfect for all age groups, and are not to be missed!

the children are our futureAs a parent and health and fitness professional, I am always alarmed by the shocking statistics of the growing levels of obesity in the UK. It is said that a staggering 25 per cent of boys and 33 per cent of girls between the ages of 2 – 19 years are overweight or obese, and there is little evidence that shows any decrease despite intervention.

It’s no surprise really that the nation’s children are becoming this way, when not only is junk food so readily available, but the majority of homes are so busy that convenience meals generally take precedence over cooking from scratch. The other big concern is that many parents do not themselves eat balanced meals, and do not understand the importance of good nutrition and acceptable portion sizes, or the recommended calorific intake of 1800 calories per day. The other major factor is of course the importance of physical activity; it is recommended that children do vigorous activity for at least an hour per day.

If you are concerned that your child is overweight, it is important that they do not feel they are to blame, or that they are naughty or bad; this could lead to eating disorders and have a detrimental effect on self-esteem and mental well-being. We should be educating them as much as ourselves, to understand what makes a healthy lifestyle, and that treats are completely acceptable in moderation.

Encourage your child to opt for healthy snacks, and take the lead from commercial media characters such as Sportacus, who refers to fruit as ‘sports candy’. If possible, eat meals together, prepare lunch boxes, and do the weekly food shop together; you can then educate your children on nutritional content, and making healthy choices. Try to encourage your child to be active, and make this part of your family life, by going on bike rides, walking, swimming or playing football and chasing games at the park, which can be a great way to increase physical activity.

If you need help or advice, contact your local leisure centre or health club, or visit the GP, who may be able to sign post you to government initiative schemes in your local area.

all going swimminglyBridgwater Swimming Club were finally in action for their first Cotswold League gala of 2013, and started strongly with great swims from Ella Nash, Scott Fletcher, Becka Locke and Sean Fletcher in the Individual Medley events. The first major breakthrough for the club came in the boys’ 13 and under 50m Breastroke; Alex Towells took the lead early in the race and held on all the way through despite a strong challenge from both Backwell and Cwmbran swimmers. Becka Locke then added to the win in the Ladies’ 100m Butterly.

‘Swimmer of the Meet Award’ went to Connor Bryant who swam in countless events in his own and upper age groups. Head Coach, Ricky Hayes said: “I was massively impressed with all the swims, the swimmers have come so far since my re-appointment and are improving on a weekly basis. We will soon be in the new pool at Trinity Sports and Leisure and this will only help to enhance the great work the swimmers are putting in. It was great to see so many new faces to the team, which bodes well for the continued improvement of the club.”

It’s hard to imagine anything more uplifting than the arrival of spring. Our mood brightens, and we can literally lighten our homes by letting the sunshine flood in from the outdoors to lift a room out of this winter gloom.

So if you want to update your home’s appearance but don’t

have the time or budget to redecorate completely, consider starting with your window treatments.

Every window should make a statement and Hillarys, the UK’s largest supplier of made to measure blinds and shutters, has really got its finger on the fashion pulse when it comes to what the nation’s best dressed windows should be wearing this season! From bold and bright to cool and contemporary, Hillarys has got it covered.

Sarah Quilliam, head of product design at Hillarys, is responsible for the introduction of all new collections in line with the latest interior trends and colours. She also researches innovative new window treatment ideas. Her in-depth knowledge

and experience means she can recommend a solution for almost any window problem.

coLour BLindSpring is the perfect time to introduce a fun upbeat pop of colour into your home. Use a vibrant splash to wake yourself up in the morning when you put a bright blind in the bathroom, bedroom or kitchen. Stimulating and energizing, orange is said to help promote creativity and many a good idea is said to start life as a shower moment!

sHeerBlinds or ‘half-up’ blinds in a sheer fabric are the perfect contemporary alternative to nets. They offer good levels of privacy during the day whilst still allowing in plenty of light.

nature traiLNothing shouts the onset of good weather better than the introduction of flora and fauna into your home. Botanical prints are blooming marvellous and give a lovely upbeat feel.

the great somerset walkTaking place on Sunday 12 May, this popular walk through some of Somerset's natural beauty, gives you the chance to admire our local scenery whilst raising money for St. Margaret’s Hospice. The walk is mainly along footpaths and bridleways, and is the longest organised walk in Somerset. Not only do you get the benefits of fun, fitness and a great day out - every pound you raise will help provide hospice care for thousands of patients and their families in Somerset.
