LAMBING FUN DAYSunday 3 March, 11am – 4pmRodway Farm, Cannington

The twentieth of March is officially the beginning of Spring, but for many people, the brighter weather, lighter evenings, glimpse of a snowdrop or two and new-born lambs springing around the local fields is often the first sign of the season.

For Bridgwater College, lambs are in abundance at this time of year, with lambing season in full swing. If you haven’t been to Bridgwater College’s Lambing Fun Day event before, then put the date in your diary for a real treat! As the name suggests, it really is a great day out for all the family, and takes place this year on Sunday 3 March.

Even with last year’s dismal weather, the number of visitors was at a record high, and with more to see and do than ever before, this year’s event is real value for money. Tickets can be bought on the day, or if bought in advance, there is a 20% discount.

There are lots of activities lined up for the day, with sheep dog demonstrations, sheep shearing, milking demonstrations, ferret racing, tractor trailer rides, bouncy castle, face painting,

trader stalls, and of course a chance to see and hold the ever-so-cute new-born lambs.

Jeremy Kerswell, Head of Land-based Studies at the College says: “Despite the weather last year, we were delighted so many people put on their wellies and decided to join us for the day. The tractor trailer rides and sheep shearing were especially popular with the children, and everyone seemed to enjoy browsing around the product stalls of homemade jams, chutneys and cheeses.

“As well as all that, we saw more than eight lambs born during the day, including a set of triplets and twins, and it is a wonderful opportunity for visitors to see the new-borns and enjoy a cuddle with some of the more confident lambs. The feedback from the public last year was fantastic, and we are looking forward to this year’s event and meeting many new visitors to Rodway Farm.”

As this magazine goes to print, the Bridgwater Pantomime Society will be getting ready to tred the boards in the Town Hall with this year’s pantomime ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’. The pantomime was written by Keith and Margaret Robinson, who along with Richard J. Porter also produced and directed the fun-filled family show. They also took part in the production, with Keith playing Dame Stoneybroke, Margaret as the Leader of the Guardians of the Clouds, and Richard as Barrington Black, the Giant’s

henchman. It was a real family show

this year, with sisters Kim and Zoe Pike playing Principal Boy

and Girl, Jack and Jill, and mother and daughter Nicky and Georgia Case playing Daisy the Cow.

Behind the scenes, choreographer Jo Elson

produced some wonderful dance routines, and making a welcomed return to the Society was Ros Dolding, who

conducted the orchestra as Musical Director.

Did you know that the Society was established in 1957 by a small group of individuals who felt that the children of Bridgwater and the surrounding areas were missing out on a show just for them? As well as the outstanding performance the society puts on every year, they also have a huge selection

of costumes and props for hire to aid their fundraising - both individual costumes and full sets – and can be contacted on 01823 690156 for more information.

The planned reopening of the museum in February has been postponed due to extra work needed, and will now reopen in April. However, each second Tuesday of the month they have a talk at the museum - 7.30pm start, £3 for non-members, free for members, and on the last Thursday morning of each month they have a coffee morning - 10.30am - 12.00pm. These events are currently running, and the talk on 12 February will be by Ian Harris - RAF Westonzoyland 1920 – 1958.

Situated in Blake House (the reputed birthplace of Robert Blake), the museum is also the town’s heritage centre, and run entirely by volunteers who carry out a range of duties,

from staffing the reception and shop to cataloguing and research.

The Friends of Blake Museum (FOBM) is a registered charity whose prime role is to help raise funds for the running of the museum, and new volunteers are always welcome. If you have a keen interest in history and are able to spare a few hours a week, they would be pleased to hear from you. For an informal chat call 01278 456127.

Local rivals meet their matchJanuary saw local rivals North Petherton RFC and Bridgwater and Albion RFC face each other in an action-packed match.

A packed Beggars Brook witnessed a solid performance from Petherton, who played

a smart game in the first half, and tries from Gavin Hancock and Oscar Treganna pushed Petherton in to a 17-0 half time lead. Bridgwater tackled well in set plays, but from broken field positions Petherton moved the ball swiftly and adventurously around the field. The best try belonged to back row Matt Brown, which involved nine passes and covered the length of the pitch. Tackles throughout the game were destructive, and entertained the 750 adults and numerous youngsters in attendance.

Final score: North Petherton 48 Bridgwater and Albion 0

A wood-burning stove is a heating appliance capable of burning wood fuel and wood-derived biomass fuel, such as wood pellets. Generally the appliance consists of a solid metal (usually cast iron or steel) closed fire chamber, a fire brick base and an adjustable air control.

The appliance will be connected by ventilating stove pipes to a suitable chimney or flue,

which will fill with hot combustion gases once the fuel is ignited. The chimney or flue gases must be hotter than the outside temperature to ensure combustion gases are drawn out of the fire chamber and up the chimney.

Many wood-burning stoves are engineered such that they can be converted to multi-fuel stoves with the addition of a grate.

The Volunteer Centre Mendip & Sedgemoor is celebrating after receiving national recognition for its work. It has been awarded Volunteer Centre Quality Accreditation (VCQA) by the national volunteering umbrella body, Volunteering England.

The VCQA measures and tests a Volunteer Centre’s ability to deliver high quality services and create an environment in which volunteering can flourish at a local level.

Denise Timmins, Volunteer Centre Development Worker, said: “It’s great that we can demonstrate to the community, funders, supporters and stakeholders that we are committed to quality and that we’ve been nationally recognised for the work that we do.

“Now we can build on this good work, providing a comprehensive service to both individuals and local organisations that need volunteers.

“We all lead busy lives and it can be hard to find time to volunteer but the benefits of volunteering can be enormous to you, your family, and your community. Volunteering can help you learn new skills and give you new experiences which can help you stand out from the crowd when applying for jobs. Sharing your time and talents with others can build your confidence, help you make new friends and research shows that it can

protect and improve your mental and physical health. Why not make a New Year’s resolution to give it a try yourself?”

Tony Shepherd, Manager of Mendip Community Support which hosts the Volunteer Centre said: “Anyone interested in volunteering or in recruiting suitable volunteers for their organisation through our Volunteer Centre should phone 01278 457685 or email: [email protected]

As well as Sunday services, baptisms, weddings and funerals, Saint Mary’s is used by an increasing number of community organisations, including Bridgwater College concerts and its annual Awards Presentation Evening, and Active Living for its monthly meeting.

Members of the church would like more community groups to use their facilities for a range of activities and meetings, and can offer the Podger Room for meetings of up to 30 people, and the Swan Transept within he church itself for larger social gatherings.

st. mary’s church regular groups & meetings at st. mary’s: A fundraising coffee morning is held on the first Saturday of each month from 10.30am. Fom my experience the coffee is much cheaper than anywhere else in the town withheavenly home-made cakes.

The Women's Fellowship meets twice a month on Thursdays, in the Podger Room at 2.30pm. They offer a warm welcome, companionship and friendship

Active Living is held in St. Mary's each month on the first Tuesday from 10.30am - 12pm. This group is aimed primarily at those who are 50+ and offers a variety of activities: speakers, chair-based exercises, outings, an internet café, computer lessons, and much more. No need to book – just go along!

Thursday lunches are held almost every week of the year, in the Swan Transept of St. Mary's, starting at 11.30am. They offer soup and rolls, delicious cakes, and tea & coffee at reasonable prices. All proceeds are sent to Christian Aid.

B.A.S.H (Bridgwater Advice Support and Help) are in church every Wednesday from 10am -2pm for anyone who is feeling lonely, need to talk to someone, or for those with mental health problems. If you don’t want to visit in person, you can phone Cherrill on 07530 382862.

The British Flag Carnival Club first appeared under this name in 1965. They have achieved a number of successes, and despite a bit of a drought in the

trophy cabinet in the last few years, remain one of Bridgwater's premier clubs!

Raising monies in support of the carnival club, they will be

holding a quiz night on Saturday 23 February at 7.30pm at North Petherton Bowling Club. £1.50 per person and teams of five. There will also be a bar and raffle
