Happy New Year to all of you at Lochdale. I hope everyone enjoyed the holidays with family and friends. Our return to school has been a good one as we already approach February. The girls’ and boys’ basketball teams have begun their games. Mr. Baldin, Ms. McNeilly and Ms. Wu are helping and our coaches, Adrian and Jeff have continued to do great work getting the students ready for their games and practices. I wish to thank them for the extra time they put in each week. Also, Mr.Baldin has been assisting me with grade 4/5 basketball which is new this year. Nice to see a good turnout by our students to these sessions. We have also been celebrating Literacy Week through guest readers from our school and teacher librarian, Ms. Yorke, has the room buzzing with reading activities. I also would like to say hello again to Ms. Grundy who is beginning her teaching at Lochdale once again. Mr. Baldin will be assisting her with Division 6. Welcome again Mr. Baldin. I would also like to thank Chris Stroppa, a Burnaby Firefighter, and organizer for the treats program that was dropped off early in January. It was greatly appreciated to our families and students. Helen Correia, our LCSA executive member, organized the annual bottle drive a few weeks back. Over $225 was raised. Thank you families for your contributions. We remember Ken Ryan, longstanding volunteer and helper in our school community, who passed away recently with A Celebration of Life that was held on Saturday, January 28th at Cliff Avenue United Church. If you wish to contribute to his legacy fund please see the community office or the GO FUND page online. Thank you. For most of the month of February, our gym will be closed as we are getting a brand new floor for gym use. P.E. classes will be outside if possible and all evening activities will not continue until after spring break. Thank you for understanding and we look forward to a great new floor for students/parents to use for various activities. Our Pink Shirt Day will be on Wednesday, February 22nd. Thank you Helen for organizing the selling of t-shirts last week. Lastly, our District Professional Development day is on February 17th. Staff will be throughout the district working on various initiatives including the redesigned curriculum. As always thank you for your support and encouragement as we continue to learn, play and grow as a school community. Sincerely, Mr. D.
