lochgilphead joint ampus newsletter€¦ · start the new session in august with a full complement...
TRANSCRIPT
I hope that you had a lovely Easter weekend and that you are looking forward to the
forthcoming holiday. It has been an exceptionally demanding term, with teachers and pupils
working hard towards SQA deadlines, preparing coursework submissions and completing the
paperwork required for moderation visits from SQA verifiers. Many departments have also been
offering supported study classes at lunchtimes or
after school to help pupils complete practical work
and consolidate classwork. Now in the lead up to
the final stages of the national qualifications, it is
important that the students in the senior phase
maintain momentum in order to achieve to their
full potential.
Our new Principal Teacher of Learning Support,
Stephen Raikes, has now joined us and we have
appointed a teacher of Chemistry, Ms Elizabeth
McCarron, who will take up her post in May. We
are currently advertising for a teacher of English
and a teacher of Business Studies and hope to
start the new session in August with a full
complement of staff. Mrs Lena Carter will be returning from her secondment at the end of May,
bringing the Secondary Leadership Team back up to full capacity. We are also delighted to
welcome back Ms Lucille Kelly, who will resume full time work in the weeks following the Easter
break.
Although very busy with the core business of teaching and learning, there has still been time for
lots of other activities across the campus. The annual Fun Run was supported enthusiastically by
pupils, staff and the wider community, raising £1305.77 for Sports Relief, and the Mid Argyll
Music Festival attracted entrants of all ages, providing a fantastic showcase for a range of
talents. Details of the winners can be found inside.
On a more sombre note, the recent terrorist activity in Brussels led us to consider the risks
associated with the proposed trip to the World War 1 battlefields and, regrettably, the decision
was taken that the trip should be cancelled. We are grateful to the pupils, parents and staff
involved for their understanding and support.
Finally, on behalf of all of the staff on the campus, I would like to wish you a happy and relaxing
Easter break .

Annual Sport Relief Fun Run
Pupils in the Primary School had a successful time at the Mid Argyll Music Festival with
Kirstin Blair and Alice Adair (pictured left) winning the duet competition and Jilly
Lefebvre and Myrtle Turnbull coming 2nd. The Vocal Ensemble
Group 2 also came 2nd in their class.
Well done also to the Primary Pipe Band who were 2nd in the
instrumental ensemble competition with 86 points. The
adjudicator said they were an impressive young band and
their performance had style and presence.
Two children were placed in the verse speaking competitions,
with Myrtle Turnbull and Jorja MacDonald both being
awarded 3rd place in their class.
Well done everyone - a great result!
The annual Lochgilphead Fun Run for Sports Relief was held at the Joint Campus today, with over 500 of the students and staff
from the nursery, primary and secondary taking part in different routes,
buddying and Marshalling. The day was a
great success raising over £1250 for Sport
Relief. Thanks to all pupils and staff who
made it possible, to Bill MacCallum for
doing the timing, to Colin MacFarlane and
the Round Table, and Raymond Flanagan
of the Youth Services Team who helped us
cover our costs.

Skiers from Lochgilphead High School took part in this year’s SSSA Alpine Championships on Thursday 25th February - two
teams took part in the qualifying event at Glencoe.
After a delay in the results due to a software glitch, news came through that
the team had qualified second behind Williamwood High School and would
now contest the novice category against 10 other
schools across Scotland. The finals on Thursday 3rd
March were held in glorious Alpine conditions of
soft powder snow, light winds and sunshine! Each
team member had two timed runs and the best 3
were combined to give the overall team time.
At the end of a great day’s skiing the results were
announced with:
1st Aboyne Academy - 8.34s
2nd Perth High School - 92.03s
3rd Lochgilphead High School - 94.14s
The team edged out Williamwood by only 0.78s, who were 1st qualifiers at Glencoe. The school has qualified for the finals
twice and on both occasions have come away with precious metal. Perhaps next year’s team can reach the top step of the
podium ?
