Have May flowers sent the signal that it’s growing season for your business garden?

What are you doing to till the soil of your account list? Are you mixing additives into the soil like a new web page or phone book ad? Planting any new business contact bulbs this year? How about joining the local gardening club by way of your local Chamber of Commerce? Maybe some new tools like a nice shiny LSA class? Any plans for the tool shed; new tires, or maybe new signage?

This is fun, the gardening metaphor applies well.

You can review your books and prune away the dead or struggling accounts. And, ward off the bump key beetle with high security hardware. OK, that’s enough.

Friends, the increases in the price of gas, the merchandise we sell, and pretty much everything else, will take a major bite out of our revenues. This is a crucial time to reevaluate your pricing, advertising, service’s offered, and customer base, then, make adjustments.

It is true that our customers are getting squeezed too, and if you raise your prices you will lose a few jobs. But, if you have differentiated yourself as a skilled professional to your good custom-ers, they will accept price increases. Staying busy is fine, but, staying profitable keeps you in business. May I restate that: Staying busy is not the same as being profitable!

From the desk of the Education Chairman: Great! Fantastic! Excellent! Highly Informative! Super! Really In-depth! These are some of the comments LSA has received from students who have attended classes offered by the LSA. It reflects highly on the quality of the class and dedication of the individual instructors who spend so much time putting together the course work.

John Paull, CRL has scheduled an Automotive Class for September 15th. I know this will be another class that can only make you work smarter, not harder. If you do auto work or are just curious, call John Paull at 586-776-6291 and make your reservation.

A special note to all the fine speakers we have invited into the LSA meetings: “Thank you for your time and efforts bringing the LSA the latest updated products and informa-tion regarding our ever changing industry!” I am not going to name individuals because I don’t want to slight anybody but let it be sufficient to say that the support given to the LSA by Manufacturers, Distributors and Factory Representatives is ongoing and most appreciated by the Officers and Members of LSA.

Every month I leave an LSA meeting saving the value of my annual membership at least once during the month, either in product, time, or resource. Much learning goes on beyond the program. If you haven't come to a meeting in a long time try “the challenge”. Enter

the meeting and ask ANYONE what they learned last month that paid off. You will be amazed at what you will hear! And, we will make you feel welcomed as well

I have the pleasure of reporting on not one, but two L.S.A. members this time. We have two couples who are members. One of these couples, Dan and Jackie Meggison, have been married for over a quarter of a century. Their story begins and ends in Ypsilanti, MI, but in 1981 they moved to a town in California near the John Wayne Airport hoping to find better jobs. After only a short time at the first job, Dan was unemployed because of layoffs. He took part time job with a local locksmith and saw an ad for a Foley Belsaw correspondence class. He enhanced his skills through this class, tutoring from his locksmith friend and attending Southwest Locksmith School locally. A short time later he enrolled in the New York Locksmith Institute correspon-dence class. During the three year California stay, Jackie was busy raising a family.

Dan then worked for another locksmith shop. But feeling shaky about what he did not know, the family packed up and headed back to Ypsilanti. In 1984 Dan found a job with Westland Lock and Key. After one week he was employed by Ann Arbor Door Closer where he stayed for ten years. He decided to do mobile locks on his own while Jackie took a job at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Ann Arbor, but with four daughters to raise, Dan needed a job with paid benefits, so in 1994 he found employment with Bell and Howell in Ann Arbor. In 2000 he was laid off due to multiple surgeries and because his sick days had expired. After almost two years of recovery, Dan renewed his mobile business. At this time Jackie began helping with pinning, installing, and book keeping. They were help by son-in-law, Kenny Schweitzer. (Kenny and his wife Janice are the other duo in LS.A.)

Personal and family health issues took its toll on this couple and they could only attend one or two meetings the past two years. Dan credits Clear Star, L,S.A. classes, and the L.S.A. website as his motivations for staying with the trade. Dan stated, “My greatest assets are Maurice Horne and John Hubel. Without their valuable expert advice and physical help, I would not be able to continue in my business.”

Dan and Jackie's most memorable job happened at the Willow Run Airport. Two years ago they got a call to open a luggage compartment of a private plane two professors from University of Michigan were flying. Dan did not have a replacement lock for the one he drilled, but the compartment could be locked and unlocked with a large screw driver. That evening they heard of a plane crash near Eaton Rapids, MI. which killed all three passengers. Dan called the authorities in the area who confirmed this was the plane he worked on, BUT the compartment did not fail. This, of course, was a huge relief for them.

Dan and Jackie find joy in being with each other, raising their daughters and having 14 grandchildren. Please keep this couple in your prayers and think of Dan who is struggling in his business.

SCHLAGE PRIMUS FSIC—Schlage has chosen to term their large format core as “Full Size,” as opposed to “large format”. It operates and is serviced in similar fashion to the Schlage Classic full-size interchange-able core. One must be careful to consider, however, the Pri-mus finger pins & springs. This core is not top-loadable, so combinating takes place via plug removal.

WHAT ARE YOU WEARING?

If you are proudly displaying the recent tour of your favorite rock group on the back of your shirt you are not only missing out of an opportunity, but alienating a portion of your existing customer base.

Regardless of what you think of that wonderful group, there will be some of your customers who do not share your thoughts. Is it worth the loss to your company for whatever dollar you spent on the shirt???

They also say when you remove something, physics says it must be re-placed with something. How about your company name on that shirt. It’s a small price to pay not to lose a customer

Editor’s Note—DUES

Now, it just so happens, our esteemed LSA is holding a seminar June 9th on how to value your time. Mark Dearing CRL, (remember him; the guy from Flint) has arranged this very timely class. Say thank you by signing up.

Yes indeed, the sweet spring air gets the juices flowing. I think I’ll go clean out my van…I mean shed.

On an even more serious note: You may recall that the LSA sent a card extending the best wishes of our members to IDN’s Mike McConnell and family. His sister Marcy McCon-nell and friends Brian Kaczor, Erin Pravato and Charley Kaier were involved in a serious automobile accident on April 14th when a drunk driver crossed the center line. While all survived significant life threatening injury they will need quite some time to recover. Please keep them in you thoughts.

A special note to each individual member: Be you a long time member or just entering the trade, your input at the meetings (as tricks of the trade or a ques-tion about a product or procedure) reinforces the value and need of this fine association! You the member are the purpose and strength of the LSA.

This news letter is my last as Education Chairman of LSA. I thank you all for your support and encouragement while I tried to bring education back to the forefront of LSA. During my term as President, getting classes to you became my priority. Your patience saw us thru and I like to think we were able to pre-sent classes that are both welcome and beneficial.

Please accept my personal thank you for your support during my tenure as President and Education Chairman.

At this time I am positioning myself for semi-retirement and I am adjusting my work hours and responsibilities appropriately. Therefore I am giving up the po-sition of Education Chairman. I will still be active in the LSA…just with a lighter load. Thank you again for your support. See you in class…

If you’re tired of working too long for too little, you must check this out. No one else cares if you sink or swim in this business. The sooner your company makes some serious money, the sooner you will retire. Then again, maybe

not!!! Bring a calculator, pencil and eraser, and a willingness to make money!

From this presentation you will:

Learn how much to charge to cover all your needs Learn to do this in 40 hours per week Overtime when and only if you want it Not care what the other guy(s) charge Recognize the per-hour cost to provide your perquisites Know your profits for the coming year by halftime of the Rose Bowl Know when to change selling prices and how much Devise a strategy ensuring you continued cost-free attendance at the

annual ALOA Educational Conference/Security Exposition (or any other desire of your heart)

• Do you need to be available 24/7? • Which is better: a refund of an overpayment to my supplier or a credit to my next

order? • Check our sample company’s operation enabling you to pay yourself first, second
