1.4 Field of Application (Intended Usage)

The Syringe Dispense System 98021 provides a semi-automatic dispensing process utilizingadhesive product packaged in 10 or 30 ml syringes. It is intended for either dot-per-part, bead orfill applications.

Syringe dispensing offers many benefits including quick and easy set-up and clean-up resulting inminimal down time. Use of Loctite® pre-filled syringes offers additional on-line production easeand convenience.

2 Description

2.1 Theory of Operation

The system is a pressure-time-vacuum dispensing system. It consists of a plastic disposablesyringe that is filled with Loctite® product, an air regulator and pressure gauge to control thepressure and an electrical timing circuit to control the dispense cycle. The vacuum suck-backfeature allows the operator to control product stringing, dripping or drooling between dispensecycles.

When the dispense cycle is initiated by pressing the foot switch, a pulse of air, either timed ormanually controlled, is transmitted to the top of the syringe barrel. This pushes a metered amountof product out of the dispense tip attached to the syringe.

When actuation ceases, whether a timed cycle or manually controlled cycle, the pressurized air isexhausted and an amount of vacuum is drawn on the product to hold it suspended in the syringebarrel and needle.

The amount of product dispensed is controlled by the amount of pressure applied to the product, the length of the dispense cycle time and the size of the dispense tip orifice. Higher pressure, longer time and larger tip orifice result in greater amounts of product being dispensed. Lowerpressure, shorter time and smaller tip orifice result in smaller amounts of product beingdispensed.

A convenient grounding point is provided on the front of unit. This ground is routed through a 10meg ohm resistor for controlled dissipation of static discharge and to prevent operator injury.

4.2 Connecting the Unit

Refer to numbered items in Figure 1.

Place syringe dispenser level with or raised above (never below) the work area. Placing the unitbelow work area may allow product to flow back into the pneumatic circuit of the unit.

1. Connect 100 psi max dry, filtered air supply to air supply quick connect fitting 11.

A 5-micron air filter/regulator (PN 985397) is offered as a recommended option to ensureproper air filtration.

2. Install the cord lock 13 to the cord lock mount with the slot at the bottom.

3. Lift the cord lock 13 and connect the foot switch plug 14 to the foot switch receptacle 12.

4. Fit the cord lock 13 over the foot switch cord 14.

5. Plug the syringe barrel adapter hose assembly (ordered separately) 16 into the airline adapterconnector 7 on the front of the unit. Twist the connector clockwise to lock in place.

6. Insure that the power switch is in the “OFF” position. Connect the power cord 9 to agrounded 120V AC outlet.

5.4 Shut down

Refer to numbered items in Figure 1.

1. During idle time*, the dispensing needle 20 on the syringe 19 should be removed andreplaced with a barrel tip cap 21. Remove syringe from the barrel adapter 16 and replacesyringe barrel cap 17.

*Idle time is defined by the type of adhesive product in use. For moisture sensitive productssuch as cyanoacrylates, some urethanes and some silicones, the syringe should be capped offfor even short breaks due to moisture present in the environment. Products which have a lightcuring mechanism should also be capped off even for short breaks due to the possibility ofcuring in the dispense tip. Other adhesives including anaerobic and acrylic adhesives do notneed to be capped unless being left for overnight or longer.

2. Turn off the unit by switching the power switch 1 to the “Off” position.

6 Care and Maintenance

To assure trouble free operation, the following recommendations should be followed:

1. Routinely check air supply hose and power cord for damage or cracks.2. Drain air supply filter/regulator. Replace if necessary. (Filter cartidge only is SMC
