Investigation was made and the man was found to be Peter Loftus of Trinidad. It seems that Loftus and a companion had started the afternoon before

for Smith's Canon, in search of employment. When near Sopris, their

buggy broke down, and they decided to spend the night there. At bed

time they laid down on top of one of the coke ovens and went to sleep.
