l National Volunteer’s WeekBeaudesert Hospital says thank you

Beaudesert Hospital’s much loved volunteers have celebrated their special week with a morning tea and patient thank you’s as far as the eye can see.

Lorna Doyle, a hospital volunteer for more than 10 years, was on hand to help cut the cake marking another year of the group’s hard work and dedication.

Lorna said she loved meeting people and helping out in the hospital’s canteen and got started when a friend asked if she would be interested in giving it a go.

“I have been able to get to know a lot of the staff and it is lovely being able to have a chat with patients.

“I would recommend volunteering to other people who are able to.

“It is lovely company and it makes a difference.”

Nursing and Midwifery Director Jacquie Smith said the work done by the volunteers to assist staff and patients and their continued commitment and dedication was appreciated by everyone across the facility.

Janelle Hunter from Shailer Park has been volunteering for Red Cross for 16 months and is pleased to be able to offer an ear to people who need someone to talk to.

“When I retired, I wanted to do something so I started knitting to stop being stressed from work. Red Cross was the first organisation I thought of in my quest to contribute and the placement just happened to be here in the mobility equipment hire unit at Logan Hospital,” Ms Hunter said.

“I love it because I love crocheting and knitting so it is wonderful to keep the craft table full for our sales and fundraising both here and at the Beenleigh office,” Janelle said.

“While I may not be off rebuilding lives in Haiti after a cyclone, the community we live in has lovely people with their own needs and it is wonderful to be here to help.”

Logan Hospital

applauds volunteer

contributionHave you ever wondered what is

the most common item lost by patients at Logan Hospital?

According to the St John Volunteers who manage the lost property on campus it is phone chargers.

“The most lost item changed from being bras and undies to phone chargers quite recently with the

advent of mobile phone dependence,” said Mr Foley who has been with St John at Logan Hospital

for 11 years.

He said the most rewarding part about managing the lost property was that if they actually have the lost item, giving it back is a pleasure because it is

important to them.

“I remember this example distinctly; we found a

battered old electric razor and this fellow came to us

and was absolutely delighted to have it back – it was no

prize piece but it was his brother’s and that’s all that

mattered,” said Mr Foley.

Community ViewsDid you know our facilities receive fantastic feedback each and every

week? Here is a recent example sent to Logan Hospital.I would like to pass on our family’s sincere appreciation for the wonderful care and compassion we experienced at Logan Hospital following my brothers recent sudden illness.

Our brother was admitted to emergency critically ill.

Our immediate family were called to the hospital due to the gravity of the illness. From the moment he was admitted we were cared for as much as our brother and that was no easy feat considering there were 16 of us.

The emergency staff and social worker were wonderful in keeping us informed and taking care of us in what was a very traumatic time.

He was then transferred to ICU where the wonderful care and service

continued. The staff in ICU also kept us informed and allowed us to spend time with him while they worked around us which was very much appreciated.

We made the heart breaking decision to cease treatment knowing what our brother’s wishes were and he passed away.

Again during this decision and time we were comforted above and beyond what I would call ‘their duty’. I wish I had thought to note names of staff that took such wonderful care of us but must admit I was not thinking very well at all.

I truly believe that this would have been a much more traumatic time for all of us if it wasn’t for the wonderful staff at your hospital.

Nurse Manager Emily Smith (Davis) and husband Brett have welcomed their beautiful new baby girl Zoe Julia Davis born at 1.45 on May 6 weighing 3.56kg, 51.5cm long.

“She’s just perfection,” said the proud new mum.

A big congratulations Emily and Brett from everyone at Logan and Beaudesert hospitals.
