Meeting the visionWith the valued support o IOCPresident Jacques Rogge, theIOC Coordination Commission, under the leadership o itsChairman Denis Oswald, andthe wider IOC membershipand sta; the UK Government,Mayor o London, BritishOlympic Association, BritishParalympic Association and our

partners and sponsors, manythousands o pieces o detailedoperational planning to deliverthe vision and model or theLondon 2012 Games are nowin place, and have alreadytouched the lives o millionso people domesticallyand internationally.

London 2012 has beendistinctive and dierent rom theoutset. We have aimed to put ona Games that take into account

the changing circumstances othe world and the continuingand new challenges to theorganisation and delivery osport and sports participation, rom the global inancial crisis

and rise o social media toclimate change, poverty, livingwith scarce resources anddeclining levels o youthsport participation.

As the capital prepares tocreate Olympic history as theirst city to host the Games onthree occasions, London 2012also charts new ways orward

or uture Games: innovationssuch as shorter, sharpersport sessions, new ticketingallocation and in-venue seatingarrangements, and multi-mediasport presentation ormatsto ensure ull stadia andmemorable sporting occasions.

In addition, London 2012 hasintroduced a revolutionaryapproach to Gamessustainability. This includes settingnew standards across

key social, commercial andenvironmental sectors, includingsustainable construction andevent management; and lowcarbon, zero-waste Games thatconserve biodiversity and naturalresources and promote socialinclusion and healthy living.

This approach extends to theway we are using an innovaticombination o new, world-claOlympic Park stadia, existing, iconic venues and settingsoutside the Park and temporastructures where appropriate. We are only building what thcommunities o London can usand aord ater the Games. a strategy to deliver excellenc

A new part o London hasemerged rom this deprivedarea, including new, aordablehomes, schools, a communitymedical centre, better transportconnections and Europes largestretail development, all leading tomore jobs and other signiicantsocial and economic beneits.

More than 7 billion-worth oGames-related contracts havebeen awarded to hundreds ocompanies across the UK,helping to protect businessesand jobs during the worsteconomic downturn in decades.

Reaching out to young peopleStaging Games or everyone

must involve bringing sport andthe beneits o sport to some othe worlds most vulnerableyoung people. Our primarymission has been to use London2012 to reach young peopleall around the world andconnect them to sport, whichwe have already achievedthrough our InternationalInspiration programme.

More than 12 million youngpeople in 20 countries, rom

Azerbaijan to Zambia, haveexperienced sport throughthis irst-ever Olympic andParalympic Games Host Cityinternational sports developmentprogramme. The wide rangeo beneits include better schoolattendance and educationalperormance, and the

empowerment o girls anddisabled young people toparticipate in sport, accesseducation and developconidence and leadership skills.International Inspiration is alsosaving lives in many ways, including teaching children and

young people to swim in lood-prone areas o Bangladesh.

International Inspirationexempliies what London 2012stands or and the legacies itis delivering. In the UK, theseinclude more than 900 sport-speciic projects in communitiesacross every nation and regionto develop sports participationand physical activity schemesor people o all ages.

The vision and preparations orthe London 2012 Games have

made sports participation a highpriority. The UK Governmentannounced early in this Olympic

year a new 1 billion, ive-yearyouth and community strategy tourther broaden and develop the2012 Games promise to inspirea generation to get involvedin sport. This will involve thecreation o 4,000 school-basedcommunity sports clubs with linksto one or more nationalgoverning bodies o sport.

Inspiring valuesThis process o change andinspiration has been driven bythe timeless Olympic andParalympic values o respect, excellence, riendship, courage, determination, inspiration andequality. We have integratedthese values into our Get Set

education programme, and intosport, culture, art and communitysettings, events and programmesacross the UK and internationallyto help young people addressissues relevant to their lives, such as bullying, gangs, socialisolation, illegal drug use,and community participationand involvement.

While it would be olly to expectthe Games to solve all socialills or concerns o young people,London 2012 demonstrates thatGames-related programmesand values have an importantrole to play highlighted, orexample, by the universalsupport generated withinthe United Nations or theLondon 2012 Olympic TruceResolution. All 193 UN memberstates co-sponsored the

resolution, making it the mostsponsored resolution in UNhistory, relecting the importanceo the Olympic values as aworldwide source o hopein challenging times.

Magical LondonLondon will sparkle with a vibrantOlympic and Paralympic lookand eel or the Games. Thediversity o the capital, as hometo more than 200 communitiesand aith groups, will provide

a truly international settingor the Games, along with anunprecedented welcome orparticipants rom everycompeting nation.

Hyde Park, Wimbledon,Traalgar Square and someo the worlds leading theatres, arts centres, perormance hallsand museums will serve asunorgettable venues andbackdrops or sport andcultural events.

This, together with Londonspassion or sport and position asa global centre or youth culture, education, ashion, media andcommerce, will ensure theLondon 2012 Games havea truly international impactand relevance.

All this will create a magicalatmosphere, and an electriyingexperience or competitors andspectators. It will provide the

upliting spirit which distinguishesthe Olympic Games andParalympic Games rom othersports events, as we promisedin our bid.

This will urther increase theglobal appeal o the Games andensure they remain the premier

sports events or the worldsleading athletes, as well as thebest means or InternationalFederations to showcase andpromote their sports. We willensure the Games remain theevents that the worlds citiesmost want to host.

London helped to establish andglobalise the Games and sportin the last century. Now, theLondon 2012 Games modelheralds a new era an era thathighlights the impact o theOlympic and ParalympicMovements and values in widersociety, beyond the sportscompetition venues,as a hidden social worker, teacher, youth motivator, urbanplanner, economic player and

    quiet diplomat.

More than a century ater theLondon 1908 Games and morethan 60 years ater the 1948Games which took the world romwar to sport and were the catalystor the Paralympic Movement,London 2012 demonstrates how

the Games have grown arbeyond a sporting event andshows the important role sportcan play in modern society. The Games have created newstandards, new policies, new programmes and newopportunities, and have helped

to drive change in areas asdiverse as sport andemployment, culture, educationthe environment, accessibility, attitudes to disability and sociainclusion, and led toimprovements on what hadexisted beore our Games visiowas supported by the IOC inSingapore seven years ago.

Above all, London 2012 sendsa message to the youth o theworld that sport matters and

that the Games are or them. Wsincerely hope we have ulilledthe International OlympicCommittees and the InternationParalympic Committees highhopes or these Games, and thwe stage Games we can all beproud o.
