London

Hello and welcome to our optional booklet for 2018.

We have created individual books for all of our regions, so if you are studying in England, Scotland, Vancouver, Toron-to, San Diego or New York, you will find a much greater selection of entrances suggested to enhance your time with Oxford International.

As well as new attractions, we have expanded those that are able to offer that little something extra for students, whether through workshops, private collections or alter-native tours. Each page contains an overview of the desti-nation, what the students will see and do, and what they get for their money. On most attractions they can benefit from our trade rate discounts! Please take the time to have a good read of this information and contact us with any questions.

It is very helpful for us if you book these optional excur-sions ahead of your trip. However, it is of course possible for your group leaders to book them from their Activity Manager when they arrive at their centres. Please note that this list is by no means exhaustive. If there is some-where not listed here that your groups really want to see, please contact us and we will gladly price the excursion for you. We look forward to meeting you all soon and here’s to a successful and enjoyable stay with Oxford International!

Buckingham PalaceThe most famous palace in the world and home to Her Majesty the Queen and the Royal Family. With changing exhibitions, stunning surroundings and the chance to view state rooms (21st July - 30th September only), this is a truly wonderful attraction.

Exhibitions 2018 : Splendours of the Subcontinent: A Prince's Tour of India 1875–6

In October 1875, the Prince of Wales set off on a four-month tour of the Indian Subcontinent, visiting over 21 localities that today encompass India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Nepal. The exhibition tells the story of this grand tour through the jewellery, gold and silverware and ceremonial arms presented to the future King Edward VII by local rulers as part of the traditional exchange of gifts.

Cost: £16.50

Houses of ParliamentTake a tour of the Houses of Parliament, the world’s most iconic building, for a unique combination of one thousand years of history, modern day politics and stunning architecture. This attraction is very popular, and has restricted availability when Parliament is in session, so we highly recommend enquiring about this as soon as possible.

Special Exhibition 2018:Throughout 2018 the Houses of Parliament will be celebrating 100 years of women’s suffrage in the UK. A summer exhibition covering women’s attempts to influence Parliament, the campaign for votes for women, and the representation of women in the Commons and the Lords will be held in Westminster Hall.

LDN like a Local Hang out with hipsters, see the pop-ups and markets, spot the street art and smell the street food. This is Shoreditch, once one of London’s most deprived areas that has reinvented itself as one of its most vibrant quarters, buzzing with new creative businesses. And we’ll show it to you like a local. London is, after all, so much more than red buses, black cabs and fish ‘n’ chips, come with us to find out!

COST: £10.50

King's Cross Tour Only 20 years ago the area behind King’s Cross station was a symbol of urban decay, a dead (and dangerous) soot-covered industrial wasteland. Then at the turn of the new millennium a visionary group of organisations formed a plan to transform it into one of London’s most dynamic new districts – “The Knowledge Quarter”. Now home to some of the world’s leading online, media, entertainment, education and research brands and a vibrant restaurant, bar and café culture, join us to witness the remarkable scale and ambition of this transformation that involved the creation of 2,000 new homes, 50 new buildings, 20 new streets, 10 new public squares and one new London postcode.

4

Camden Rocks The vibrant streets of Camden Town have always been a magnet to some of the biggest names in music. Join us to discover the local haunts linked to a list of artists that reads like a “who’s who” of the British music scene. We’ll take you from the Arctic Monkeys to Led Zeppelin via - to name but a few - Ed Sheeran’s first London gig, Adele’s favourite clothes shop, Lady Gaga’s rehearsal studio, the memorial to Amy Winehouse and where the likes of Harry Styles, Bruno Mars and Skepta like to party.
