I am really honoured to be the President of The London Hospital Dental Club for 2013-14 and to have the opportunity to organise the programme for

the Annual Clinical Meeting. I have tried to put together a programme that is not only interesting and entertaining but which also contains some element of core CPD to help with the eternal CPD quest.

As you will no doubt be aware, this is an eventful year in the life of the Dental School, as it sees the move into brand new premises situated within the Alexandra Wing of the old Royal London Hospital. The move from the old building may be tinged with sadness for those of a nostalgic nature but fear not, the facilities offered in the new school are state-of- the-art, and second to none in the UK. Also occurring at the same time is the introduction of the second year of the new 2012 curriculum based on the GDC’s ‘Preparing for Practice’ document. These factors should enable our students and staff to offer the highest standard of care to our patients in comfortable and contemporary surroundings, and should enable learning, training and assessment to take place using modern technology.

The one thing that we all have in common is our attendance at The London, The Royal London, Barts and The London – the same institution despite its numerous names over the

years – but it struck me that many may not know what students go through nowadays. There are mumblings about “dumbing down” in modern education and the constant feeling that “it wasn’t like that in my day.” With this in mind I have called upon some colleagues within the Dental School to start the Meeting with a couple of talks about the modern dental school. Professor Liz Davenport will talk about the new curriculum and the challenges experienced in delivering it, whilst Professor Kim Piper will talk about the admissions process that our students go through, to show how we are committed to getting the best from each and every graduate.

Staying on the work of the Dental School I have asked Dr Wendy Turner and Dr Jason Niggli to talk about their experiences organising and running the extremely busy dental clinic at the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, and the role played by the Dental School in delivering this highly successful venture.

I have then put together a clinical programme that is slightly biased towards oral surgery, my area of interest. Professor Tara Renton from King’s College London, formerly Senior Lecturer at Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry, will give a talk on the challenges for oral surgery in the next decade. Dr Jimmy Makdissi, our very own SL in Radiology, will give an update on CBCT and include, as a first, some elements of core CPD. Simon Holmes, Clinical Lead for OMFS, will talk about his work as an OMFS trauma surgeon. Simon is ideally placed to do this as he is trauma lead at Barts

Health, the only hospital in London with a helicopter emergency support service, hence ensuring a high volume of trauma flows through the department.

Staying on the trauma theme, I have asked Professor Ferranti Wong to give us an update on the modern management of dentoalveolar trauma. I have also revived an old tradition of including a talk on an aspect of medicine related to dentistry and for this have asked Dr Dan Hart, SL/Honorary Consultant in Haematology at the School of Medicine and Dentistry and Barts Health NHS Trust, to update us on aspects of bleeding and dentistry.

The social side of the programme will not be neglected. There will be a Trade Show during the refreshment breaks and on the Friday evening, after the Evelyn Sprawson Lecture, there will be a drinks reception followed by dinner at Le Café du Marché in the City. Lunch on Saturday will take place at Maedah Grill in Whitechapel. For those who are interested, we are also hoping to organise tours of the new Dental School in the afternoon after lunch (building works permitting).

I really hope you are able to come and support your alumni society in March and that you will find the Meeting stimulating and informative, as well as giving you the opportunity to reminisce with old colleagues.

The Annual Clinical Meeting in 2015 will be held on Friday 27 and Saturday 28 February. Your President for 2014-15 is Tim Fry (q BDS, The London, 1988).

Over 120 alumni, staff and current students attended the Annual Clinical Meeting last March. Following the theme of ‘Tomorrow’s World’, the programme was collated by the LHDC President for 2012-13, Dr Len D’Cruz (q BDS, The London, 1989) and took a look at future challenges in the dentistry field.

Highlights of the programme included a session by the psychologist, Dr Kate Hefferon, whose discussion ‘Is there a formula for happy dentists?’ was very well received, as well as talks by Old Londoners, Dr Paul Batchelor, Chris Emery, Dr Freddie Martin and Brian Westbury, who returned to the Dental School to share their expertise.

The Slack Medal was presented to Professor Paul Wright (q BDS, The London, 1969), Emeritus Professor in Prosthetic Dentistry, and the 2012 Evelyn Sprawson Lecture on ‘Renaissance teeth’, was given by Evelyn Welch, Professor of Renaissance Studies at King’s College London.

I am delighted to have been given the opportunity to contribute to the LHDC Newsletter in my first year as Dean of the Institute of Dentistry.

It has been an extraordinarily busy academic year for all staff and students of the School. Last term we hosted an inspection by the General Dental Council, part of a regular six year review of the

Professor Curtis is an internationally respected research scientist with a long history of service to Barts and The London, most recently as Director of the Blizard Institute and as Deputy Vice Principal (Health) since June 2012, a role he will continue.

Once again this required input from a large number of academic and administrative staff but we must wait until the end of 2014 to discover the outcome.

We have now focused on the next major challenge for this academic year, namely our move into the new Dental Hospital. I do hope that many of you will be able to take part in tours of these new facilities, either during the course of the Annual Clinical Meeting or at some point in the near future: they are truly transformational in terms of the environment for our clinical education, research and service activity.

Finally, I would like to thank all staff, past and present, who have given me such a warm welcome to the School. I look forward to working with all of you in the coming years to secure the reputation of Barts and The London as one of the leading dental schools in the UK.

In October, senior members of the Institute of Dentistry and the General Dental Council (GDC) were taken on a tour of the School’s new premises in the Alexandra Wing. In attendance were Elizabeth Davenport, Professor of Dental Education; Professor Mike Curtis, Dean for Dentistry; and Dr Alan Cruchley, Chair of the Dental Education Centre, as well as six members of the GDC, including the Chair, Alan Kershaw, and representatives from the Trust New Hospital Project Team.

The visit included a review of the

BDS course, which aims to ensure our educational programmes are delivering the appropriate learning outcomes and producing “safe beginners” on graduation. This really was a whole School team effort, involving the preparation of significant volumes of evidence prior to the inspection and the active participation of over 40 members of staff and 60 students during the two-day visit itself. Everyone played their part and the students, in particular, were tremendous ambassadors for the School. The process will conclude in May, when the inspection panel reconvenes to observe our finals examination processes.

In November, we completed our submission to the Research Excellence Framework (REF), another cyclical assessment process, this time designed to measure the quality and impact of our research and to rank us against other dental schools in the UK. A successful outcome in the REF is important not only for reputational reasons (the last time this exercise took place in 2007, we were joint

Future IT installations to the teaching labs, namely the Scotia Medical Observation and Training System (SMOTS) which will provide a means for state-of-the-art audio visual communications between tutors and students via microphones, speakers, CCTV cameras and desk or work station-mounted monitors, were discussed.

The Annual Business Meeting (ABM) for the Dental Club will take place in the Perrin Lecture Theatre on Friday 7 March at 12.45pm, immediately after the lecture. All alumni are welcome to attend.

Elections for the position of LHDC President for 2015-16 will take place during the ABM.

Dr Wendy Turner, Head of the Centre for Adult Oral Health and Honorary Consultant in Restorative Dentistry at the Institute of Dentistry, is looking for extracted teeth that can be used for teaching purposes. Wendy welcomes any teeth on offer, so long as they have not been allowed to dry out.

If you have any extracted teeth, for which you have written consent from the patient who agrees to their use for teaching purposes, please bring them with you to the Meeting.

Who, why, when and what does Implant Treatment involve?

The Malcolm Jenkins and John Richards Travelling Scholarships are presented annually to up to two dental students from the School. The 2012-13 recipients, Dr Katarina Stead and Dr Damaris Santander Soria, presented their papers to alumni at last year’s Meeting.

modality for restoring missing teeth in India was a dental implant. The implants and implant-supported prosthesis was therefore the focus of my elective as the university’s ‘Implant Centre’ offers different systems for the treatment of partially and complete edentulous patients.

I sought to investigate and observe the following questions: who can have implants, why have dental implants, when is an implant suitable/unsuitable, and what does implant treatment involve, with the latter involving a case review and observation study of an endosseous implant surgery. Implants are a very versatile form of treatment and are effective both on their own and as part of an extensive body of work. With rapid advancements in the science of dental

including puppet shows, videos and personalised talks on how to brush teeth and the importance of reducing the intake of sugary foods. As a result, when the children finally sit in the dental chair, there is already a good rapport between the patient and clinician, which in turn leads to more effective treatments and outcomes.

This experience very much enhanced my passion for improving paediatric oral health through prevention, and taught me various communication methods. It also gave me the opportunity to visit the breathtaking Iguaçu Falls and the Andes, both of which are must-see sights in the region.

I would like to express my gratitude to alumni for their generosity. This trip equipped me with a new set of skills and some great memories, which otherwise would not have been possible. Thank you!’

‘This award enabled me to spend my fourth year elective in the Prosthodontics department at the Government Dental College and Hospital in Mumbai. It also enabled me to visit a country with a contrasting dental system to the UK.

A survey carried out by the Indian Journal of Dental Research found that of the 63.6% answered questionnaires (1,500), the most preferred treatment

‘In recent years the UK has increasingly moved towards the prevention of oral disease, rather than focusing solely on restorative treatment. I was curious to learn whether this is the case elsewhere so I took the opportunity to travel to Argentina to visit the paediatric dentistry department of the Universidad Nacional de Córdoba.

My project sought to understand how undergraduates deal with prevention and the treatment of oral disease in their child patients. Whilst discussing patients with the students and their clinical tutors, I realised that

we face similar challenges. They have high rates of caries and the sugar content of food in general, not only that of sweets, is high. Most patients come from low socio-economic backgrounds which means that, in order to see any real improvement in a child’s oral health, the whole family has to be educated in the basics of general healthcare. Dentistry students therefore carry out introductory and motivational sessions before the children even set foot in the clinic,

implant treatment, they are fast becoming the most desired solution to replace missing teeth in patients of all ages.

This award helped to fund a memorable experience and enabled me to expand my knowledge, as well as use my time in India to soak up its historical legacies. Meeting staff, students and patients from a broad variety of social and ethnic backgrounds also furthered my understanding of others. Thank you for providing me with the financial support for this once-in-a-lifetime learning opportunity. This unforgettable experience will help me to become a successful and informed clinician, working to make people smile!’

‘My elective gave me the opportunity to travel to South America and spend two weeks comparing the differences in orthodontic referrals in the School of Dentistry at the University of São Paulo (USP), Brazil with those at The Royal London.

Our supervisor at USP arranged for us to observe a number of activities and we were fortunate to shadow clinicians in a variety of settings.

This included a specialist care centre (CAPE), where they treat numerous special care cases from infectious diseases to severe disabilities, and the Laser Laboratory (LELO), where they use high and low level lasers for a wide range of treatments. We were also able to learn about a project called ‘Envelhecer Sorrindo’ which aims to help the elderly. One thing that was really noticeable, when observing orthodontics, was the difference in patient attitudes towards dental care. Generally speaking, people in Brazil are very conscious of their appearance and patients prefer to have treatment which is based on current research. By contrast, treatment at The London is provided on a needs basis.

I learnt so much from the experience and I would like to thank the staff and consultants at USP for their kindness and hospitality. I would also like to thank alumni for their generous contribution towards my elective.’

2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games Medical Team wins Nursing Times ‘Team of the Year’

The pioneering Dental Hygiene/Therapy programme at the Institute of Dentistry celebrated its 30th anniversary in September 2013, making it the longest running programme in the UK.

Sarah Murray wins Gerald Leatherman Award

Sarah Murray (q Dip Dental Therapy, The London, 1990), Principal Dental Hygienist/Therapist Tutor in the Centre for Dental Care Professionals, won the Gerald Leatherman Award at the 2013 British Society of Dental Hygiene and Therapy (BSDHT) Oral Health Conference in November. This prestigious award is given to an individual, not necessarily a dental hygienist, who has shown consistent support to the profession or to the BSDHT. Staff, students and alumni from the

With teaching excellence leading to a pass rate of almost 100 per cent each year, over 260 students have qualified from the course to date. Alumni work both in the UK and overseas as hygienists, therapists and teachers in dental education, while others continue their studies to train as dentists.

Over the past 30 years, significant changes in dentistry have meant that the role of the dental hygienist/therapist has been developed to provide the general public with more opportunities to receive oral care. Staff within the Centre for Dental Care Professionals have been instrumental in facilitating these changes through their work with the General Dental Council and the Department of Health.

The London Organising Committee of the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, Medical Services, comprised of staff from Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry, was named Team of the Year at the 2013 Nursing Times Awards in October.

Staff from the Institute of Dentistry were essential to the Medical Team, leading dental services and providing care to over 3,000 athletes and team members during the Games.

Dentistry at Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry, Queen Mary University of London is ranked third in the UK in The Sunday Times Good University Guide 2014.

The 2013 National Student Survey (NSS), a nationwide poll of final-year undergraduates on various aspects of their student experience, ranked Dentistry joint 8th.

The Guardian University Guide, published last June, placed Dentistry 4th in the UK out of 15 institutions, a jump from 10th position in 2012.
