Sandra briefed the group on the Healthy Communities Funding Application. The Seeds
of Change Project seeks to engage communities in a dialogue and will address mental
health promotion and substance and/or alcohol misuse. The group decided to start the
process and engage communities both service providers and ethno-cultural groups in
two consultation meetings that will be held June.
Cultural sensitivity training:
The group did not meet due to challenges in their schedules. Materials shared at
today’s meeting as well as materials developed through the London Police will be
utilized to develop and or adapt for the purpose of using them for future training.

Central Council Update:
Corinne noted that the Central council engaged the Culver Group to review the
LMLIP structure and develop a governance model to enhance our work to meet
our objectives. The draft model will be presented to Council on September 26
meeting. She also noted that a community meeting will be scheduled in the fall
to share the learning from the Strategic Multimedia Communication Plan (SMCP)
and involve community partners in implementing the work plan of the SMCP.
Review of HWB Implementation Plan – Report back from working groups
Mental Health and Addiction group: Janet and Melanie reported that the
application for Seeds of Change project has been successful. Family Service
Thames Valley is the lead applicant and a number of services are supporting it.
The Steering Committee will be finalizing the job description for the project
coordinator. One consultation meeting with service providers was held early
this month and in July a consultation meeting will be held to engage the
immigrant communities in the discussion about mental health and addictions.
Cultural sensitivity training
Corinne noted that she along with Gisele and Huda met to map out a strategy
to implement this strategy. Health & Wellbeing Sub-council will collaborate with
Inclusion & Civic Engagement and Justice & Protection Services to gather
information on available resources; connect with service providers who
developed such training or materials and design 2-3 workshops that will be
shared in the fall with the Sub-council. Corinne will take the lead in designing
the workshops. The group will meet to develop a work plan and will report to
sub-council in September 2011
ACTION: Sheila Densham and Julia De Paz will join this working group.
Developing screening and assessment tools
No report from this group. It was noted that some existing assessment tools
may be adapted to reflect cultural sensitivity. The Sub-council members
recommended that the working group connect with the Learning Disability
Association to check their assessment tools and collaborate with them to adapt
them.
ACTION: Joan Kicks will join the working group
Providing support in holistic manner- increase immigrant awareness on
services /Create free accessible designed community space
These two strategies are intertwined. Nimmi reported that the brochures and
the translation of the Help Yourself booklet were action items of this group and
have been implemented. The work of these two groups aligns with the System
Reengineering committees i.e., the Common Experience and the
Neighbourhood Engagement & Development committees. Members were
requested to serve on these two committees.
ACTION: Tendayi will serve on the Common Experiences and Carol Carnegie
who already sits on the Neighbourhood Engagement & Development will also
represent the Health & Wellbeing.
Carol noted that apart from serving on these committees, this sub-council’s
working group needs to look into ways of facilitating access to immigrants of
all age demographics, since the System Reengineering committees are focused
on families with children under 12 years, to spaces in the city.
ACTION: Carol will lead this group and will connect with members who
expressed interest in joining the working group.
Other
Sheila shared the new initiative “Reaching Under/Never Screened (UNS) Ethno-
cultural Populations of South West Ontario” - using ethnic media and translated
advertising and editorials to increase cancer prevention and screening
awareness. South West Regional Cancer Program (SWRCP) received a grant in
the amount of $13,000 to support the development, testing, translation,
placement and evaluation of an UNS ethnic multi media advertising and
editorial campaign which will start in July 2011. Arabic and Spanish speaking
communities have been identified as the target audience for this project.
The SWRCP submitted another funding application in collaboration with
community partners to mobilize immigrants and newcomers to cancer
screening programs. Some of the components of this application align with the
Health & Wellbeing strategies.
ACTION: Establish a new working group with Sheila and Julia on board to
develop ways of engaging the immigrant communities on cultural sensitivity
approaches and strategies

the Child and Youth Network as our intentional voice to link and provide us with
