DAY N° 3 May, 17th SHAKESPEARE ‘S GLOBE THEATRE
The Globe
In the Elizabethan period, the theatre was a very popular entertainment. The poorer people stood in the central pit. Only the richer ones could sit in
the roofed galleries. The performance only took place during the summer, and in the daylight because there was no electricity to light the stage.
There were no microphones either, and as the spectators shouted ate and drank, it became very noisy. The actors had to repeat their lines in
different places on the stage to be heard by all the audience. You can now visit the Globe in London. It has been rebuilt exactly as it was in
Shakespeare’s time.
Why is Shakespeare famous? He is one of the
world's greatest
writers. He wrote plays for the theatre. He wrote poetry too.

The figures that you see in Madame Tussauds are known as ‘wax figures’ or
‘portraits’ because they are an exact likeness of a famous person. Their face, height,
body-shape, and even their hair are all copied exactly as they are in person.
Marie Grosholtz (later to become Madame Tussaud) was born in 1761 France, where
her mother took a job as a housekeeper for the successful wax sculptor Dr Curtius. It
was here that Marie learnt the art of wax sculpting from an early age. Demonstrating
a natural flair for sculpture, Marie was soon sculpting her own figures of prominent
people of the era.
