The experience ofLOVE

begins from theexperience ofLONELINESS

( Man is naturally gifted with self-

consciousness that theres come a point in the stage

of his life that he comes to an awareness of his

unique self and the possibilities open to him. )

During CHILDHOOD

Things like toys and candies made up his world.

People were mere extensions of his ego, mere satisfactions of his

desires.

But as he becomes anADOLESCENT

He questions the things that were taught to him by his parents and

teachers.

He searches for his own identity.

Who am I? becomes a focus of his existence.

He feels misunderstood, unwanted, ALONE.

In effect

He seeks out his fellow adolescents for understanding and

acceptance. He groups himself with his barkadabecause they

happen to have the same likes and dislikes as he.

* However, LONELINESS is still possible even if one is

immersed in the crowd. In an attempt to conform to the group and

hide ones individuality, his loneliness eventually expresses itself as an

experience of BOREDOM.

And so, to overcome hisBOREDOM and LONELINESS

He many times resorts to any activities which provide him

heightened sensations (e.g. drinking and taking illegal drugs). These

offer him temporary escape from reality.

He keeps himself busy with creative activities which again

temporarily divert ones attention from oneself. However, he will just

tire himself out.

LOVEis the

ultimate answer

to LONELINESS

The answer to the problem of loneliness is the reaching out to the

other person as an other. Love is the answer to the problem of

loneliness because it is only in love that he finds at-onement and still

remain himself.

Love unites him with others, love makes him overcome the sense

of isolation and separateness, yet, it permits him to be himself, to

retain his integrity.

In love, two beings become ONE, and yet, remain TWO.
