Sunday’s Reflection
In the First Reading from the Book of Exodus,
God speaks to Moses. In the midst of revealing to
Moses what the Israelites have done and how they
have violated His trust in them, the Lord says, “I
see how stiff-necked this people is.” As is often the
case in Holy Scripture, the term “stiff-necked” has
a basis in agriculture, and one with which we may not
be familiar.
Farmers at that time used the term “stiff-
necked” to describe an ox or horse which did not
respond to directions. When an animal like that
would not move and resisted direction, the animal
tended to stiffen and freeze, thus the term “stiff-
necked” for one who is stubborn and uncooperative.
God may consider us to be stiff-necked at
times, might He not? In spite of the Lord’s appeals
to us to trust Him and to follow Him, we sometimes
stiffen and resist. Usually we do that because
following the Lord may prove uncomfortable for us.
God’s terms for us and His expectations of us may
sometimes seem unreasonable and even impossible.
Yet, that is the challenge of living stewardship
as a way of life. It is not always easy, and it may put
us in positions where we feel uncomfortable and
even vulnerable. Moses pleads the case for his
people to God and the Lord responds to Moses’ plea,
his prayer, and Scripture tells us “So the Lord
relented in the punishment.” We do need to trust
the Lord, and we do need to pray to Him, as He will
respond with love and mercy.
Pray For…

“…there will be rejoicing among the angels of God over one sinner who repents.”

the power of the Holy Spirit and the meaning of
your life in Christ. Some facts for you to consider:
A short Confirmation preparation is based on
your needs.
Confirmation is a requirement if you are invited
to serve as a godparent.

celebration of Adult Confirmation.
Contact Sister Carol to register for this
sacramental preparation.
Catechetical Sunday, September 18
Catechetical Sunday is celebrated once a year
on the third Sunday in September to recognize
those who teach our faith. At Mass on September
18, those whom the community has designated to
serve as catechists will be called forth to be
commissioned for their ministry. Catechetical
Sunday is a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the
role that each person plays, by virtue of Baptism, in
handing on the faith and being a witness to the
Gospel. Catechetical Sunday is an opportunity for all
to rededicate themselves to this mission as a
community of faith.

Repair & Maintenance Fund
Monthly, we have a second collection for the
“Repair and Maintenance Fund.” As explained in
prior months’ bulletins, these monies help the parish
defray the operating costs which exceed the
anticipated or budgeted operating costs.
We would like to keep you updated as best we
can on a monthly basis as to what expenses have
been incurred in the last few months which these
collections help address.
Most recently, in order to remain in compliance
with state law, we had to complete asbestos
abatement for some pipe insulation in the Church
Boiler Room. (There was no risk to anyone except
those who might come in direct contact with the
insulation). The cost of the abatement was $1,850.
In addition, in an effort to improve efficiency
and increase the lifespan of our new Chapel boiler,
we re-insulated the pipes in the Chapel boiler room
as was recommended by the Archdiocesan inspector.
This cost $4,190.
These second collections are critical to our
parish’s financial health and well-being. Without
your generosity, we simply could not keep up with
upkeep!
Make the Switch to Online Giving!
Many parishioners have already made the switch
to online giving for their weekly offertory. No more
searching for envelopes, or hassling with cash or
your checkbook each week. What’s more, online
giving helps the parish plan and maintain a steadier
income stream for our operating needs. It’s easy to
get started – go to our parish website,

Q and A … Becoming a Catholic Q. If I sign up for RCIA (Christian Initiation of
Adults), what happens?
A. You will be welcomed to discern
how God is directing you to learn about
the Catholic Faith. The RCIA Team will
explain the process and listen to your
needs and questions. There would be
no obligation to continue if you choose
to wait or to stop the process.
Q. How long does it take to become a Catholic?
A. Sessions normally are scheduled from
September to May on most Sundays at 10:15 AM. Each
person evaluates readiness and length of preparation
to receive the sacraments of Baptism, Eucharist, and
Confirmation. Validly baptized Christians are not
baptized again.
Q. What if I have been coming to Mass for
many years with my Catholic family?
A. Contact Sister Carol or a Team member at the
parish to discuss your readiness to become a Catholic.
Q. May someone accompany me to the RCIA
sessions?
A. Yes. In fact, we encourage you to name a
sponsor or godparent who would join you, if possible,
most of the Sundays. Spouses are also welcome to
gather with us.

A few reminders as we begin the year:
1) It is still not too late to register for faith
formation classes. If you have a child in preschool,
kindergarten, or grades 1 – 6 who would like to join a
class with children of their own age to learn about
their faith, please call 410-592-6206, Ext. 107.
2) On Sunday mornings, from 10:00 to 11:30 AM,
the area directly in front of the school building is

teacher or assistant(s) to arrive. At the end of class,
parents are to meet their child(ren) outside their

a classroom, or to navigate across the busy church
parking lot. Thank you for your assistance in keeping
our children safe.
Reconciliation If you have a second grader and were not able to
attend one of the parent orientation meetings that
were held on August 28 and 29, and do not have a

The character of St. Peter is both inspiring and confounding to many of
us. How could a stubborn and impulsive fisherman become the "rock"
upon which Jesus would build His Church? Bringing together biblical
accounts, historical evidence, Church teaching, classical art, and
personal insights, Dr. Tim Gray gives a fresh perspective on Simon Peter
that is immediately informative and relevant to our lives. After all, if
Jesus could bring out the very best in someone like Peter, then there is
hope for the rest of us!
