New Safety Standards for Private Swimming Pools
December is an exciting time when many families and friends
gather to celebrate Christmas and the beginning of a new year.
Sadly, with this wonderful time comes many horrific stories of
children drowning.
The Standards Bureau is in the final stages of updating rules for private swimming
pools. According to the draft from the SABS every private swimming pool that can
hold at least 30cms of water should be surrounded by not only a kid-proof fence,
but should also be fitted with a safety net or cover.
Such a cover must be installed by an “accredited responsible
party” and will be disqualified should it allow rainwater to
pool for more than 5 minutes or if a child is able to unfasten it.
Stay safe and please remember to keep an eye on your little
ones this holiday season!

Somkhele 2018
Somkhele is situated 85kms northwest of Richards Bay in KwaZulu-Natal and is South Africa’s
largest producer of metallurgical anthracite.
The mine is operated by Petmin’s subsidiary, Tendele Coal Mining and Mpukunyoni Mining.
And was first acquired in 2005. Somkhele Mine as a whole employs over 950 people, 80% of
which are from the local community.
Somkhele’s product is currently sold to the ferrochrome and iron and steel industry. Future
potential markets include the ferromanganese industry and titanium smelters.
Q&A with Pieter Willemse, Plant Manager at Somkhele:
Q: How long have you been working for Mpukunyoni Mining?
A: 3 years.
Q: What are the main operations of the site you work on?
A: Somkhele is the biggest Anthracite mine in South Africa consisting of three process plants and
currently three mining areas (Area 1, 8 and 9).
Q: What is your role in the company?
A: Managing/controlling all engineering activities on the mining side of the site.
Q: What highs and lows do you experience day-today on site?
A: High - When all events on a day to day basis are streamlined and the availability target is met while
everybody is working together as one team, money made and expenses cut.
Low - When production damages my machines.
Q: Is there anything else you would like to share with our newsletter readers?
A: Always maintain a positive mind-set in the challenging and ever changing working environment
called ''mining'', take ownership, always remember, your focus determines your reality. Everyone
wants to live on top of the mountain, but all the happiness and growth occurs while you're climbing it.

Q&A with Corni van der Westhuizen, Site Administrator at Somkhele:
Q: How long have you been working for Mpukunyoni Mining?
A: 4.5 years.
Q: What is your role in the company?
A: Site Administrator.
Q: In a brief description, please explain a day in the life of your occupation
on your site:
A: It varies day to day but basically data capturing, assisting other
employees with correspondence on suppliers, assisting with
queries on site and from HO, backorders, warranty claims, outwork
queries, vehicle licenses - you have to be a 'Jack of all trades and a master of all!!'
Q: What highs and lows do you experience day-today on site?
A: Were working in the bush, therefore the low is constant but also variable, there are internet
problems (e.g.: Fish Eagle making a nest in the Radio satellite tower resulting in us having problems
for 3 days until technician came out from JHB to relocate the nest) and Eskom power dips. Then we
have rain that causes the roads and ramps to be very slippery resulting in safety issues.
Q: Is there anything else you would like to share with our newsletter readers?
A: Enjoy what you are doing - this makes a big difference in your attitude at work and home. Afterall,
we are here 10hrs of the day.
Corni van der Westhuizen
Congratulations!
Congratulations to Wonderkop’s JP
Pretorius who recently graduated from the
Management Advancement Programme through
Wits Business School.
Congratulations to Sean Tromp, two of his artworks have been used as book
covers for novels written by Ian Miller and published by Stone Table Books. The
artwork on the left, Arboretum was released on the 14th of March 2018 and the
one on the right, Serpent Bearer was released on the 18th of October 2018.
Congratulations to Jeandre Greyling (SPH) and his wife Vianca
who got married on the 17th of November 2018.
River Rafting 2018
On Saturday, the 3rd of November 2018 a large group of employees travelled to Earth
Adventures in Parys to take part in the exciting river rafting teambuilding event. Thank
you to all of the employees who took part. The day was thoroughly enjoyed by all who
attended and we look forward to hosting a similar event in 2019.
Telkom 94.7 Cycle Challenge
On the 11th of November Corrie Victor (SPH) and Hugo Conradie (SPH) took part in the Telkom 94.7 Mountain
Bike race in order to raise funds for the Smile Foundation. The event took place in
Fourways, Johannesburg and proved to be challenging in the 31 degree heat. Both of
our riders did extremely well, Corrie finished the race in a time of 3 hours and 1
minute, with Hugo just behind him completing the race in 3 hours and 33 minutes.
On the 18th of November, Corrie and Hugo took to the road again
in the 94.7 Cycle Challenge. Unfortunately, David Westraat was unable to participate this
year as planned as he came off of his bike a week earlier, breaking his collar bone.
Unfortunately due to the extreme heat, Hugo suffered from dehydration and was forced to
pull out of the race. Corrie Victor however managed to complete the race in an excellent
time of 4 hours and 4 minutes.
Well done to our riders and a big thank you to everyone who made donations towards the
Smile Foundation for their ride! This money has gone towards helping children in need born
with facial abnormalities such as cleft lip and cleft palate.
