“I enjoy cooking and I love good food, that’s why I have to say I watch Martin Yan’s Yan Can Cook and Martin Yan’s Chinatowns. It’s not just fun and entertaining to watch, but I have learned a lot from the show. Martin Yan has made me more creative and experimental every time I cook. My family now enjoys dinner time over good food.”

Craig WashofskyGroup Vice President, Servco Home and Appliance

“I have always been a fan of art, specifically theatre, having been the Chairman of Honolulu Academy of Arts for six years. To me, Masterpiece Mystery! is a wonderful program that pro-motes good values and superb performances. Personally, I have learned how to become a gentleman because of that show. That is why I recommend it to my sons as well.”

Sam CookeSenior Vice President, Morgan Stanley

““Believe it or not, my favorite is Clifford, The Big Red Dog. The show reminds me of the book I used to read when I was young. Now, I am a mom of seven and we all have such a good time watching Clifford. With PBS Kids, I am sure about the qual-ity and safety of the programs. The shows are clean, educa-tional and are very instrumental in bonding with my kids.”

Debbie MonmaneyProfessional Mom

“I like Long Story Short with Leslie Wilcox because it gives me the opportunity to meet the people I’ve always wanted to meet. Leslie brings out the real personalities behind the successes of the guests, mak-ing it easier for viewers to learn from their experiences and best practices. Leslie has such good people skills, I just can’t imag-ine the show without her.”

FAQ: Is there a long or short story behind the program’s name? LW: The show named itself. All we at PBS Hawaii had to do was listen to people telling stories. When someone says “long story short” in conversa-tion, they’re about to take an involved storyline and pull out

the key parts for you. FAQ: There’s been such a wide range of people interviewed on Long Story Short. How do you and your producer go about selecting the guests? LW: Show producer Wendy Suite maintains a long and growing list of people who’ve

been suggested by our viewers. The premise of the program is to reveal the person behind the public persona. So generally the guests have made a name for themselves. You think you know them. But do you really? We look for a record of achieve-ment, a compelling personal story, a history of interesting choices, engaging conversa-tion, and the willingness to be responsive and candid. We’re also interested in getting to know people from all islands, with a range of ages, life experi-ence and viewpoints. FAQ: How is the show different from a news interview?

LW: Well, I’m not looking for soundbites. I settle in and want to get to know the person across from me. I’m not out to “lead the witness.” My role is to draw out the guests and let them tell their stories in their own way. It takes longer but it’s often far more revealing. FAQ: Which guest’s story sur-prised you the most? LW: Without a doubt, the big-gest surprise came from uku-lele teacher Roy Sakuma. I’d researched him — talked with some of his friends and knew what he’d said in other inter-views and in his own biography.

ith text messaging and email playing such a big role in how we communicate, do you sometimes think good conversation is hard to come by? You will always have access to a “good talk” Tuesday nights on PBS Hawaii. As Long Story Short with Leslie Wilcox wraps up its first year, we thought it was a good time to have viewers’ most frequently asked questions answered by the program host and interviewer, Leslie Wilcox.

He had never said openly what he said on Long Story Short. He disclosed that he grew up in a home with serious untreated mental illness. He explained the ways in which his childhood was full of puzzlement and pain. Later, Roy (pictured above) said that he hadn’t planned to reveal what he did. He told me I didn’t seem to be caught off guard. But believe me, I was.

FAQ: What were some of the most memorable moments on the set of Long Story Short? LW: Minnijean Brown Trickey (pictured below right), one of nine African-American teenag-ers (the civil rights movement’s “Little Rock 9”) who integrated a previously all-white Arkansas high school in 1957, recalled plainly that her heart broke as she was “surrounded by hate.” Her story so affected our col-lege production students that they clapped at the end of the taping, stood in line to shake her hand, and hugged her. In Washington State to talk with retired news anchor Bob Sevey, we worked on location with an “ex-pat” production crew of former Hawaii residents. They told me they overcame their

awe of Sevey so they could do the job flawlessly — in tribute to him, the standards he set and the story he shared pub-licly for the first time about his reasons for leaving television news. FAQ: You’ve interviewed people you knew before and people you met for the first time. Does that distinction make a differ-ence? LW: Oddly enough, I may do a better job with people I don’t know very well. I’m a curious person and like to learn. A couple of times, with newsmak-ers I’d covered for many years as a journalist, I didn’t ask a question because I already knew the answer. Of course, I kicked myself later.

FAQ: Tell us about some of the PBS Hawaii staff members who work behind the scenes on Long Story Short. LW: The technical crew went through a learning curve on this show. Through our partnership with Sony Hawaii, this was the first Hawaii show to be shot, edited and broadcast in high-definition. HD, dense with data,

behaves differently than famil-iar standard-definition. Stylist Chris Jose experimented with new very sheer make-up. Pro-duction veterans Paul Hayas-hida, Glenn Yamamoto, and Terrence Quinsaat worked with college production students in putting new equipment to work, blocking shots differently, re-staging lighting, and mas-tering phases of production. Daryl Harada (pictured above)

has done a fine job editing the show. Wendy Suite, as producer, and Robert Pennybacker, the exec producer, are committed to the purity of this program that consists simply of rich conversation, TV without bells and whistles. FAQ: What’s new in year 2 for Long Story Short? LW: No end in sight of intrigu-ing people, sharing their sto-ries. I ran into a viewer who said he thinks of Long Story Short as Hawaii’s sitting room, where we all bond over familiar life experiences, the struggle over choices, and common values. Here’s to more of that.ꆱ

PBS Hawaii supporter Jessamy Maraden knows the value of a good television program. A native of Southern California, Jessamy has fond memories of watching Reading Rainbow in the fourth grade, and Masterpiece Classics with her mother.

“I still love watching the Masterpiece series. My mom used PBS as an instrument to educate and culture her children – she knew how important it was. And I watch PBS Hawaii today for the same reason.”

After receiving her Aloha Diner’s Club Card in the mail, Jessamy was quick to use the valuable discounts. “I graduated from the University of Hawaii, but then moved back to California for a few years. Now that I am back in Honolulu, I can use my Club Card at Planet Hollywood, one of my favorites back home. And Café Che Pasta...the Insalata Nicoise tastes simply divine.” Jessamy chooses to support PBS Hawaii because of how public television has supported her.

Shortly after, Simon King, who has filmed wild cheetahs for 20 years, became their new parent at the 50,000- acre Lewa wildlife conservancy in northern Kenya. From bottle-feeding to teaching them how to hunt as their mother would have, King hand-reared the brothers and became deeply attached to them in the process. Toki and Sambu’s life under King’s care, by turns idyllic and tragic, unfolds amid the stunning vistas of the Kenya savannah. of others? What gives a person the strength to endure unspeakable acts of torture without losing the will to carry on? Is every person, if put into the same situation, capable of such virtues? Can everyone be a hero? The film traces the history of the Medal of Honor, from a profile of Sgt. Paul Smith (pictured), the first soldier to receive a Medal of Honor in the Iraq War, back to its creation during the Civil War. Through intimate accounts of fear and the realities of surviving war, mov ingly told by living recipients, Medal of Honor explores these extraordinary, almost inconceivable, acts of heroism for which the medal has been awarded. Unique to North America, the bald eagle is the continent’s most recognizable aerial predator, with a shocking white head, electric yellow beak and penetrating eyes. Photographed by Emmy-winning

The latest in camera technologies will give viewers unprecedented high-defi- nition access into the nests – and into the skies – with these majestic birds. (e)(HD)

8:00 Masterpiece Contemporary Filth Julie Walters (Mamma Mia!, Harry Potter) stars as Mary Whitehouse in the true story of a moral watchdog barking at the heels of swinging England in the 1960s. Hugh Bonneville (Five Days , “Miss Austen Regrets”) co-stars as the prime object of Mary’s wrath: Hugh Greene, head of the BBC and a force for everything contemporary, witty and — in Mary’s

eyes — filthy. Alun Armstrong (“Bleak House”) plays Mary’s taciturn husband, Earnest, who toes his wife’s virtuous line while secretly longing to cross it. Forty- five years after Whitehead began her campaign, the question of what is and what is not acceptable for broadcast television remains a hot issue.9:30 Viewpoints ‘08-’09 DOE10:00 Austin City Limits Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings/Carolyn Wonderland (HD)11:00 History Detectives (e)(HD)Cable OnlyMidnight Earthshaker 12:30 The Journey to Palomar2:00 Monarchy: The Royal Family at Work The State Visit (Parts 1 & 2)

Few Americans then or now accept that a lone, inconsequential gunman could bring down a president and alter history. That event gave rise to a culture of conspiracy that points to

sinister forces at work in the shadows. This film features interviews with au thors Norman Mailer and Edward J. Epstein, politician Gary Hart, news anchor Dan Rather, activist Tom Hayden, attorney Mark Lane and others. Drawing upon these interviews and rarely seen archival footage, “Oswald’s Ghost” takes a fresh look at Kennedy’s assassination. 8:00 NOVA The Bible’s Buried Secrets NOVA’s comprehensive archeological and literary investigation traces the origins of the ancient Israelites, explores the evolution of their belief in one God and reveals how the manifestation of their faith, the He brew Bible, also known as the Old Testa- ment, was written. In-depth discussions with leading biblical scholars and archeologists were filmed with the remnants of ancient cities dating back three thousand years as a spectacu lar backdrop. As part of the project, NOVA commissioned a hand-crafted, il-

lustrated Bible — a bound collection of artwork featuring images of ancient frescoes, illuminated medieval manu- scripts and paintings by European mas- ters. These striking visuals evoke memo- rable scenes from biblical literature such as God speaking to Moses from the burning bush and David as he slays the giant Philistine warrior, Goliath. (HD)10:00 Independent Lens March Point This documnetary follows the journey of three teens from the Swinomish Tribe who have been asked to make a film about the threat their people face from two local oil refineries. In the late 1950s, two refiner- ies were built on March Point, an area that was once part of the Swinomish reserva- tion by treaty. This is the story of the boys’ awakening to the destruction these refineries have wrought in their communi- ties.11:00 Charlie RoseCable OnlyMidnight Savage Planet1:00 American Experience Oswald’s Ghost2:30 Remembered Earth: New Mexico’s High Desert

Directors Meg McLagan and Daria Sommers give viewers an intimate look at war through the eyes of the first women in U.S. history sent into direct ground combat, despite a policy that bans them from doing so. Through harrowing per- sonal stories, these women candidly share their experiences in Iraq as well as experi- ences from their lives back home to form a portrait of the emotional and psycho- logical effects of war.11:30 Charlie RoseCable Only12:30 Knee Deep1:00 Independent Lens March Point2:00 Nova The Bibles Burried Secrets

He went to kill a wolf. Not just any wolf, but an outlaw, the leader of a maraud- ing, cattle killing pack. But by the time

Ernest Thompson Seton finally met the renegade Lobo, the wolf had become a hero in his eyes. He would write a tale of that encounter that captured the essence of the vanishing wilderness and led both to the establishment of the national park system and the Boy Scout movement in America. In this vivid retelling of the story, the confrontation between Seton and Lobo comes alive, and viewers discover how, together, one man and one wolf set in motion a change in American hearts and minds that is still unfolding. destruction perpetrated by Germany’s Third Reich during World War II. For 12 years, the Nazis looted and destroyed art on a scale unprecedented in history, but heroic young art historians and curators from America and Europe fought to res- cue and return millions of lost, hidden and stolen treasures. The legacy of this tragic time in history continues to play out today as families recover looted works of art and nations fight over the ill- gotten spoils of war. Joan Allen narrates.
