Longboarding in Berkeley California Finding the ideal cafe from the Campanile Arash Malek . Jon Arcellana . Lindsay Tamura Introduction: Longboarding has become an increasingly popular sport among students at UC Berkeley. Longboards are efficient means of transportation, able to transfer one a reasonable distance to a desired location. Recently, a school club called the “Longboard Connection at Berkeley” has been formed to unite skaters and further spread the sport. Due to its popularity, the Longboard Connection club asked us to determine the best routes to the most popular cafés within a 1.5 mile radius of the UC Berkeley campus. Method: We first started by doing a general survey among Berkeley students and asked what their favorite local cafés were. Afterwards, we Googled information on those cafés and narrowed our list down to 5 popular cafés located around the UC Berkeley campus. We based the narrowing process on distance from the Campanile—this is a well known spot in UC Berkeley and we felt it was a suitable landmark. We digitized the points we acquired from google into arcmap and then we conducted a 1.5 mi radius buffer around the campanile. Several cafés fell within this radius so we used the information from Google to determine the top 5 highest rated cafés to conduct our research on. Conclusion: After looking at all three maps we concluded that the best cafe to study is Royal Ground cafe located on Shattuck Channing. Using the bike route to go down Channing it is a slight down slope. This street also contains no transit lines and is far enough away from the police stations to avoid the police giving out tickets. We found that the quickest pre set route by arcmap doesn’t fit our ideal route. Coming in a close second place is Elmwood cafe located on College avenue. Taking Bowditch and Hillegass to the cafe location is the most ideal route. Following the wide streets with bike lanes and no public transit, the user can get there fast and safe. The other three cafe locations did not make our list of ideal cafe’s based on our constraints. Introduction:Longboarding has become an increasingly popular sport among students at UC Berkeley. Longboards are ecient means of transportation, able to transfer one a reasonable distance to a desired location.

Method:We rst started by doing a general survey among Berkeley students and asked what their favorite local cafés were. Afterwards, we Googled information on those cafés and narrowed our list down to 5 popular cafés located around the UC Berkeley campus. We based the narrowing process on distance from the Campanile—this is a well known spot in UC Berkeley and we felt it was a suitable landmark. We digitized the points we acquired from google into arcmap and then we conducted a 1.5 mi radius buer around the campanile. Several cafés fell within this radius so we used the information from Google to determine the top 5 highest rated cafés to conduct our research on.

Conclusion:After looking at all three maps we concluded that the best cafe to study is Royal Ground cafe located on Shattuck Channing. Using the bike route to go down Channing it is a slight down slope. This street also contains no transit lines and is far enough away from the police stations to avoid the police giving out tickets. We found that the quickest pre set route by arcmap doesn’t t our ideal route.

Coming in a close second place is Elmwood cafe located onCollege avenue. Taking Bowditch and Hillegass to the cafelocation is the most ideal route. Following the wide streets with bike lanes and no public transit, the user can get there fast and safe.

The other three cafe locations did not make our list of ideal cafe’s based on our constraints.
