Preparing for final

grading assessments

(prelims) 2021

Subject grading

statements &

exam topics

INTRODUCTION

Preparing for the Final Grading Assessments (Prelims)

✓ There will be a range of papers for the prelims, depending on the subjects you study at A level

✓ Some vocational subjects do not have formal written examinations as they are coursework based, e.g.

Performing Arts

✓ The prelims will only contain questions on topics within the specifications that you have been taught (either

face-to-face or remotely)

✓ Topics for each subject, or links to in-depth guidance, are all contained within this booklet

✓ Your teachers will help you structure your revision and will support you in lessons to focus on key topic

areas.

REVISION

You have had an ‘Elevate’ session earlier on in the year and your tutors and Miss Keith have talked to you about

revision. If you are still struggling to revise effectively, ask for support!

✓ Organise your notes and revision material

- Declutter and organise a work space – lying on your bed is not conducive to revising effectively.

- Get all revision materials in one place.

✓ Create a revision timetable and stick to it!

- ‘Little and often’ – think about sessions of 30 minutes at a time.

- Take breaks and get fresh air.

- Plan for all your subjects; it’s very easy to focus on the ones you’re good at and that you like, don’t!

Make sure you plan for each subject and each topic.

- Be realistic! You can’t revise for 12 hours so don’t plan for that as you’ll fail day one.

✓ Do ‘active’ revision

- Reading notes and making notes over and over isn’t revising! Think about using:

- Flash cards – get a family member involved to ask you questions

- Mind maps – your brain remembers in colours, you learn whilst you draw them and you learn by

looking at them and creating stories (remember your ‘Elevate’ session.)

✓ Turn technology off! Have a ‘technology blackout.’ The most successful 6th formers do this every year and

your Instagram account isn’t going to lose 1000s of followers just because you don’t update your story for a

few hours.

Best of luck!

Please arrive in good time for your examinations.

Please wait in the canteen area until you are called up to the exam hall.

Please note:

• You may be asked to resit papers where authenticity is not guaranteed, e.g. where you completed papers

at home and they are required to form part of your grade. These will be new papers written to include the

same topic lists but with completely new questions.

• Any proven malpractice will result in a ‘U’ grade for that examination and you will not be given an

opportunity to resit that paper. An investigation will occur and you may receive a U grade in your suite of

examinations for entire examination period.

Awarding A level/ Level 3 grades at Longdean School in 2021

We will be following the guidance set out by the Ofqual for determining grading:

✓ Assess students’ performance, only on what content has been delivered to them by their teachers, to

determine the grade each student should receive.

✓ Use evidence of a student’s performance from throughout the course to inform the judgement.

✓ Determine the grades as late in the academic year as is practicable to enable teaching to continue for as

long as possible.

✓ Use a broad range of evidence across the taught content to determine the grades before submitting the

grades to the exam boards

Explanation of evidence

✓ Each department has set out the evidence they will be using to award a Teacher Assessed Grade (TAG) at

the top of each subject section. These are sub-titled ‘Grading Statements’ and fall into two categories:

- Preliminary evidence – key evidence they will be using to establish a grade

- Subsidiary evidence – additional evidence that can be used to establish a grade

Note: In exceptional circumstances and under special consideration, other forms of evidence may

need to be used – each student where this applies will need to be assessed for ‘special arrangements’

and paperwork completed to explain the rationale required.

These will then be moderated internally and externally (for core subjects + some others) and the Centre

Assessed Grade (CAG) will be confirmed.

✓ We have been at pains to use evidence which has been supervised, unseen and undertaken in conditions

that were intended to secure that work was the students’ own work. These include:

- appropriate invigilation

- no access to materials or resources that would not be permitted in exams

- no possibility of corrections or revisions.

Prelim Results

✓ Marks for all prelims will be shared with students but no grades

✓ Grades will be moderated by departments and across the school cooperative

Results Day

✓ Tuesday, 10th August at 9 a.m.
