Recreation NewsBy Bree Nash

Happy fall! We’ll be conscious of the changing season and cooler temperatures as we plan outings and programs throughout the month of October. Please keep an eye on your weekly recreation schedule for musical performances, trips into the community, along with the weekly shopping trips. Sign-up sheets are posted promptly every Friday at 2:30 p.m.

HOLIDAY BAZAAR NEWS: Our first meeting is scheduled for Friday, October 11 at 2:15 p.m. in the Auditorium!

Who? We need YOUR help! Volunteers are needed before the event for sorting and pricing white elephant donations, for making craft items and baked goods to sell the day of, and of course we’ll need greeters and sales clerks the day of the event.

What? The Holiday Bazaar is a long-standing fundraiser for our Longview Community. The funds have been used to: upgrade the auditorium sound system, purchase a new resident computer for the game room, donations to Gadabout, money set aside for a grand piano for the auditorium, assisted in purchasing Longview’s van (and we’re saving again!), just to name a few!

When? Save the Date! Saturday, December 7 from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. Where? Throughout the 3rd Floor of Longview.

Please come to the first bazaar meeting if you’re interested in volunteering in some way. We need your help to make this year’s bazaar a success!

We’re inviting you to dress up for a Halloween Costume Party on Wednesday, November 1 at 3 p.m. We can’t wait to see what you come up with! Please see the Recreation Department if you need costume ideas; we’d be happy to help.

Just a reminder: if you’re planning on walking outside, please bring a friend or let someone know! The sidewalks may be slick in the shade and deceive your eager step! If you’re looking for sun without battling the elements, the greenhouse is a great place to visit.

Best,Bree, Sarah, Laurie, Soni and Cora

Ithaca College Lecture Series: “Physics & Climate Change” by Jerome FungWednesday, October 23, 7 p.m. LV AuditoriumClimate change is one of the most urgent issues facing humanity today. Yet, understanding the Earth’s climate and how humans interact with it remains a significant scientific chal-lenge. In this talk, Fung will discuss the basic physical principles underlying climate science, and how those principles can be applied to simple climate models. He’ll then briefly discuss some of the ways in which those simplified models can be refined to give a better under-standing of how and why the Earth’s climate is changing.

Thanks to all of you for your kind donations to make it possible to replace dead and dying orna-mental trees on the Longview grounds! We now have a contract with the Cayuga Landscape Com-pany to plant trees around the Longview property. They will be planting several dogwoods, crabap-ples, a lilac, a winter hawthorn, and a Cornelian cherry. Areas of the Patio Homes are included in the improvements. Late in October we will witness the planting, and we will all enjoy the benefits of this project next spring, and for years to come!

Happy fall, everyone! To everything there is a season, and we have entered the season of harvest, fruition, storing, and taking stock. It is the time for giving gratitude and for acknowledgement of the season of growth and expansion on one hand, and preparation for the season of rest, inward-dwelling, dor-mancy, hibernation and contraction on the other. Summer is well and truly over, and winter is coming. Meanwhile, it is fall – with its golden, shortening days of praise and thanksgiving. It strikes me that autumn has often offered rich symbolism for elderhood. We hear the later years of life referred to as

the ‘golden years,’ and the ‘autumn of life.’ The poetry and symbolism in these phrases provide rich ground for reflection and meaning. I invite everyone to join me in harvest-ing the gifts of autumn in all its symbolic layers of meaning, as we explore the Spiritual Gifts of Elderhood. Together, we will read an excerpt from the book Elderhood: Redefin-ing Aging, Transforming Medicine and Reimagining Life, by Harvard-trained geriatri-cian Louise Aronson. Please find excerpts of the book in the Recreation Department by Wednesday, October 2. Whether you have a chance to read it or not, come anyway for a lively discussion on Wednesday, October 23 in the Auditorium, at 1:45 to 2:30 p.m.

The following week, please join us as well for a Celebration of Life, honoring those be-loved friends and loved ones we have lost October 30, at 2 p.m. in the Auditorium.

This month begins and ends with ancient observances of this pivotal time between sum-mer and winter, and these holidays – Yom Kippur and Samhain – share intriguing simi-larities. Yom Kippur is Hebrew, meaning Day of Atonement, and is the holiest day of the year in Judaism. Its central theme is the active embodiment of repentance, with fasting and intensive prayer, so that one may enter the New Year having atoned for wrongdoing in the past year, and having sealed an active covenantal relationship with God. It begins at sundown on October 8, and ends at nightfall on October 9. Samhain, meanwhile, is a Gaelic New Year festival marking the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter or the “darker half” of the year. Traditionally, it is celebrated from October 31 to November 1, because the ancient Celtic day, like the ancient Jewish day, began and ended at sunset. It occurs about halfway between the autumnal equinox in September and the winter solstice in December. Samhain was seen as a liminal time, when the separation between the physical and the material realms is indistinct, and more gracefully negoti-ated. The holiday eventually came to be known as All Hallows Eve, better known as Halloween, as Western Christianity adopted the seasonal celebration into its liturgical calendar, and renamed November 1 All Saints Day, dedicated to remembering the dead, including those called saints – or hallows. Allhallowtide, as the liturgical celebration was called, also corresponds to the Day of the Dead celebrations which take place beginning the 31st, all over Mexico. That multi-day holiday involves family and friends gather-

ing to pray for and remember friends and family members who have died, and helping support their spiritual journey. So, as we walk through the liminal days of fall, a bridge between the summer and winter, let us remember that for thousands of years people from many traditions have found spiritual gifts to harvest from this time. May we find comfort in our belonging to this long line of human meaning-making, stretching back to the ancients. Fall blessings to all!

Ithacare is a 501c(3) nonprofit, charitable organization. In accordance with IRS regulations,

your contribution is fully tax deductible.

Thank you to all who have very generously contributed to the Longview Vehicle Fund! Below is a breakdown of donations received as of September 27, 2019. We are at 9.14% of our $56,000 goal.

Longview has a great many services for residents and tenants – including transpor-tation. Transportation is one of the many advantages of living at Longview. Longview offers rides to events, shuttles to Ithaca College, accompanied shopping trips, es-sential trips to the grocery store, and trips into the community to some of the follow-ing, Tompkins County Library, farmers markets, Community Choral Performance, Friends of the Library Book Sale, weekly summer picnics, area state parks, such as Taughannock, and performances at Cornell and IC.

Longview’s offering of transportation en-ables each resident/tenant to engage in cultural, spiritual, diversional, physical, political, social and intellectual programs within the community. Utilizing Longview’s transporta-tion allows tenants and residents the freedom to maintain an active and fulfilling lifestyle.

After 15 years of climbing the steep hills and winding roads, the bus has grown tired, it’s worn out and extremely costly to repair. Quality of life at Longview would be hindered if dependable transportation was no longer available.

Please consider helping your friends and neighbors by making a gift towards the purchase of a new vehicle. Thank you in advance for your consideration and a heartfelt thank you to all who have generously contributed to date!

Please submit to Sue Howe, in Administrative Office M-F from 8:30-5 p.m.
