The Longview Progress Report 3

Dear Chamber Member,

As your chairman I’mvery proud to saythat YOUR Chamberis moving in theRIGHT direction! The LongviewChamber ofCommerce membersand staff can takegreat pride in thestrides made to fulfillits mission to be “the voice for business” inthe Longview community.

On September 30th the board hosted theirannual board retreat where we look atwhere we’ve been and build on oursuccesses to move our organization forward.A few of the 2010 hallmarks include thelaunch of Chamber Choice-a small businesshealth care plan with UnitedHealthcare, changing the name of the organization backto the Longview Chamber of Commerce, and bringing closure to the Market StreetStrategies report.

As you may remember, in 2009 ourorganization partnered with LEDCO tohire Market Street Strategies to take aholistic review of our organizations. Inlight of the challenging economic times, our board felt it was necessary to reviewour organization to ensure we were stayingabreast of best practices within theChamber and Economic Developmentindustry in order to move our communityforward. Outcomes from this studyincluded:

• provide stronger entrepreneurial basedprogramming (to date we have hosted 14

business development programs with 607participants),

• clarify who we are … the boardvoted to change the name back to theLongview Chamber of Commerce after78% of our members requested the namechange during a recent survey, and

• work more closely with LEDCO tobring jobs to Longview. Recently,LEDCO staff and two (2) of their boardmembers participated in the Chamber’sboard retreat in order to build a strongercollaborative effort.

Without question, 2010 has been aneventful year. The future belongs to thecourageous and your Chamber boardand staff will continue to take greatstrides towards becoming an even betterorganization and resource for thecommunity. Looking ahead, the Chamberwill need to continue to work onadvocating on behalf of our memberswhile building relevant and impactfulprograms and services to help ourmembers grow and prosper!

The future looks bright for Longview andI am proud to be part of an organizationthat strives to strengthen the localeconomy so that our city is a great placeto live, work and play.

It is truly an honor to serve as your 2010Chairman. I thank you for thatopportunity!

10 Reasons Why Members Renew

Yes, it’s easy for me to think, “We have so much tooffer—why wouldn’t a member renew?” I do think

we’re great and that our members value and appreciate allwe have to offer. After all, we advocate countless hours onYOUR behalf while you’re runningyour businesses and we workendlessly to provide a zillion programsevery month, right? When we considereverything we do, our members arejust paying a fraction of what it reallycosts for us to accomplish so much!

Just as beauty is in the eye of thebeholder, membership value is notdetermined by me or my staff but byYOU … our members. After years ofdesigning member feedback tools likesurveys, focus groups and interviews I can categorizerenewal reasons into 10 ‘buckets.’ Members renew theirinvestment in our organization for: • Civic Responsibility—Yes, just like chivalry still exists, there are still entities who support the “fair share” conceptand feel it’s their civic duty to be a member. Whether theyattend events or take advantage of what we offer, theycontinue to be “good civic citizens” and renew each year.Wish we had more of them! • Sense of Community—We do develop a rich andsupportive community and these members enjoy and reapthe benefits of being part of this community. There is a senseof inclusion that offers collaboration, support, and like-minded values and members feel a strong bond to othermembers. • Affiliation and Credibility—Members see us as thesphere of influence and feel that by being affiliated with usit gives them a strategic partnership and the “GoodHousekeeping seal of approval.” They want to leveragetheir membership to promote their brand, be included oninvitations and opportunities, and to increase their image inthe community. • Bridges and Connections—Members aren’t really seeking‘networking’ as much as they want to gain access to thosewho can help them achieve their goals. They benefit fromthe “6 degrees of separation” and can be connected withmentors, vendors, prospective customers, and keystakeholders they might not otherwise meet or interact within their own circles. We are the “LinkedIn” both virtuallyand in-person and help members build “social capital” inthe area. • Common Vision—Members love leaders who have agreat vision, purpose and significant goals. They believe inour strategic direction and initiatives, and want to dowhatever they can to ensure that we are successful. It’s notfor altruistic reasons to be members since they believe that

by ensuring our success they ensure their own. Memberswant to be part of the “big picture” and invest in resourcesfor long term sustainability. • Visibility—Members know that in this marketplace, it’simportant to have consistent visibility. Visibility promotestheir brands, let’s people know they’re still around, andkeeps them “top of mind” with those they want toinfluence. In a world where people are bombarded withmarketing, opinions and junk mail, it’s easy to be forgottenor passed by. Members have hundreds of opportunities tobe visible and be seen by a fast-paced, instant gratificationenvironment. • Representation—Members acknowledge that their voicescan’t always be heard above all the noise in decision-making circles and media venues. Partly it’s due to smallbusinesses being perceived as “small fish” or a fraction ofconstituents by decision makers, but it’s also due to a lack ofunderstanding how these systems work, accessibility tospecific decision makers, lack of credibility or perceivedpower, or just because most members are busy runningtheir own operations. We have the contacts, skills, and cloutto represent members’ concerns that allows them to focuson their strengths and achieve their goals. We’re there soour members don’t need to be. • Just-in-Time-Solutions—Members count on us and ourcommunity for educational opportunities, problem-solvingand access to best practices. Since most of our members aresmall, they appreciate that “we have people” who can offerwisdom, know-how, and help us over the constant hurdlesof running a profitable small business. • Cost-and-Time-Effective Benefits—Members are alwaystrying to find ways to save money and time on operationalneeds. Whether it’s savings for buying office supplies, insurance or shipping, they know they can save money andtime by accessing these benefits through our affinityprograms. • Leads Generation—Members expect that we’ll referothers to them and help promote their businesses. Althoughwe can’t guarantee leads or higher conversion rates, we doprovide countless opportunities for members to generateleads. From directory listings, sponsorships, leads groups, and networking and volunteer opportunities, we provideface-to-face and virtual interactions with hundreds or eventhousands of people every year. If prospects and customersare like cars, we give members access to the busiesthighways and parking lots in the area!

All of these reasons for renewal help to create loyalmembers and build a sustainable Chamber of Commerce forOUR community. We provide members with opportunities toshare why they joined and renewed, and allow them tocommunicate using their own language. Sometimes they say itso much better than we ever could.

Façade Grant Program Helps Improve Downtown

Three downtown buildings benefited from the OneHundred Acres of Heritage Main Street Façade Grant

Program this year. Façade grants are funded by the City ofLongview from CDBG funds through Longview’s MainStreet Program. The 2009-2010 funding cycle was 45,000.Application for funding is made through the Main StreetOffice. Longview Main Street is a part of the LongviewChamber of Commerce.

205-207 N. Center Street is the home of George PrestonAntiques and TCC PHOTO | GALLERY. The buildingrequired repair of the awning and refurbishing andpainting of the existing brick façade. This project receiveda grant of $4800 paid as reimbursement after the projectwas complete.

208 N. Fredonia Street is where Media Quest has theirvideo and website production company. The buildingrequired removal of old mortar and the application of anew stucco surface and paintings. New door and windowswere also installed. Final touch was a new black awning. With the completion of 208 N. Fredonia that half block hashad three buildings benefit from the façade grant program. This project received a grant of $10,000 paid asreimbursement after the project was complete.

At 215 E. Tyler Street is the Longview Museum of FineArts. Prior to the museum acquiring this property thebuilding was the home of a furniture store for many years.

In fact, LMFA is housed in what was once two buildings,JC Penney and another home furnishings store. When the

buildings werecombined the façadewas significantlymodified to look likeone building and thencovered with woodabove the windows. The projected requiredremoving the oldwood slats which hadnot protected thebuilding from the

outside elements. The building was sealed and newattractive awnings were installed in place of the oldwooden slats. At night the awnings can be lighted with awide assortment of colors. This project received two grants– one for each building – of $10,000 and $15,000 paid asreimbursement after the project was complete.
